    The UK gained a bad rep for food during WWII when Hitler was sinking supply boats and the UK had rationing. Traditionally the UK has the best desserts in the world though. The sticky toffee puddings, rhubarb/apple/blackberry and pear crumbles, Eton mess, jam roly-poly and many others beat most of the anaemic desserts in continental Europe. British food is hearty and that is necessary for the climate. The desserts are world-class though and probably only seriously rivalled by Germany's Black Forest Gateaux. I prefer the Mediterranean diet for my starters and main course but for dessert give me a British pudding always.

    How many of those artefacts that are in the British museum that were found years ago when most of the country’s that they came from had no interest whatsoever in them would no longer exist had they not ended up in the British museum ,I wonder.

    • @jonathanbowen3640
      @jonathanbowen3640 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The thing is with the British museum is its great because each artifact gets viewed by essentially millions of people. depending which year its about Six million visitors a year. If all the stuff was returned to the origin they would almost certainly get viewed by less people. Chinese museums get nothing like the same attendance figures. Only the US and France have similar attendances.
      They shouldn't give a single thing back IMO.

      It's in the most touristy part of London. I hate to think what the restaurant's monthly rent is, but probably about 90% of the cost charged to the customer. Cost of ingredients £1, wages and fuel, £1, rent £11.
      I used to work in that part of London, so I knew places where you could eat for about 20% of that price, with better food.

    Elgin paid the legal owners of the marbles [the Ottoman Empire], 35 thousand quid for them. They still have the receipt. No one "took" or "stole" anything. And as for "the Greeks" wanting them back, the people who now occupy that country have virtually no genetic connection the the people who carved them.

  • @biancalawrence3178
    @biancalawrence3178 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes, many things in the British Museum are stolen, however they were one of the few civilisations that had the money and expertise to catalogue, study and look after the artefacts. Now that some of those other countries have the facilities to store and maintain the items, they want them back. There are a few countries that don't have those facilities and just want some of the jewels and things back because they are valuable and they can resell them and make money. The most important thing is that the artefact can be cared for and used for the furtherment of science, history and education.

    If those exhibits didn't get put into the British museum, Would they openly exist today for you to look at. Thinking back to other country's may have sold , Or the leaders may have secretly kept them for themselves. I would give it all back to all of them. Because i know it would eventually all disappear and we would no longer have these things to enjoy, Or see the History in them. Because we know corruption and greed doesn't exist in the world, Right..

    What I can’t understand about sausage and mash (no one I know calls it bangers and mash - that’s rather old fashioned) in all these London vlogs is they seem to only give you sausages, potatoes and gravy. If you order it elsewhere in the country, you get loads of vegetables too. It seems in London, you pay 3x the price for sun-par meals.

    • @JohnSmith-ki2eq
      @JohnSmith-ki2eq ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's all according to where you go in London, go to the tourist places or the poncy places and you'll get a sub-par experience, what you really want to do is find out where all the local tradesmen and council workers go for their breakfast/lunch, that place will always be banging!

    • @faithpearlgenied-a5517
      @faithpearlgenied-a5517 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because they mostly go to tourist traps lol. Obviously. Simplest foods for extortionate rates. Bangers and Mash depends where you're from, almost everyone I know says bangers and mash, regardless of age.

    • @nealgrimes4382
      @nealgrimes4382 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never call them Bangers because it implies cheap and nasty sausages as the name comes from sausages with a high water content so they would spit a lot in the pan, i remember them before they upped the minimum meat content for sausages.

      And Jesus - the PRICES in that chippy FFS?!?! 😱😱

    • @charlesunderwood6334
      @charlesunderwood6334 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fish and chips varies within town and areas- traditionally better near the sea, most cod is now sourced from Norway so that is irrelevant. As a decent cod fillet costs £5 retail, be very wary of fish and chips that is too cheap; some chippies use poor quality fish and often catfish imported from the Far East. Add the cost of staff and property, especially in cities, and it is an expensive dish.

    • @jonathanbowen3640
      @jonathanbowen3640 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm from up north. The fish and chips are no difference to what I can find in London. In fact the best fish and chips i have had have been in London and I've been to pretty much every coast in England.
      Too many British people think their local chippy and its mass catering products (sourced from coscto, makro etc) are somehow the best or authentic. No, be real. The food capital of the nation is going to have pretty damn good examples of one of the main national dishes. To believe otherwise is delusional. Particularly has London has great markets and access to products from around the country including some of the best fish in the world for some of the best restaurants in the world. This infrastructure and expertise simply does not exist up north. And I'm from the north.

      It's probably fine, like any large city there are good and bad parts.

      London is quite safe, 99% of visits have no issues. Like most cities there’s bad parts but you’ll have to go out of your way to get to them, far away from tourists areas.

    London prices are extortionate, pie and mash and sausage and mash are 6 quid in the north
