The Magic Flute Ballet 1983

This is a comic romantic ballet restaged and choreographed by Peter Martins. It was originally choreographed by Lev Ivanov to music by Riccardo Drigo in 1893. It was broadcast in 1983 with an introduction by Peter Martins.
The story revolves around Lise, a farmer’s daughter, and Luke, a peasant, who are in love. The marriage is opposed by her parents and they try to get her to marry an elderly nobleman. Oberon gives Luke a magic flute that makes people dance against their will. With the aid of the flute, and Oberon’s intervention, all ends well.

The original video copy had an obtrusive moving herringbone pattern during about half of the time. They were removed using a fast Fourier filter. The filter left some ghosting artifacts. Some frame editing removed video interference and hand editing removed some audible pops.

Actually the ballet was indeed written down back in Imperial Russia and was documented in Stepanov Notation. It is part of the “Sergeyev Collection” housed in Harvard.

I adore this ballet. Have music on CD.. love the cute funny fairy tale story and a happy ending. Mother reminds me of Widow Simone from La File Mal Gardee and both daughters have the same name Lisa, in another version mother was danced by a man like Widow Simone..
