My nana is a real odd one. She is vaguely racist, judges almost entirely on appearances and is very two faced. I was terrified to come out as bi to her. Imagine my surprise when she looks at me confused and said "everyone is like that?" And then proceeded to tell me about her whirlwind romance with a female friend in Germany while her cheating and abusive husband was stationed there. Turns out the issues she had with my mother becoming a lesbian wasn't about her being gay, it was about her "sloppy fashion sense that couldn't attract a mirror, let alone human being" . Big surprise

Years ago, a coworker of mine told me about his mom putting an LGBTQ flag sticker on her car. She liked rainbows, so she bought it and stuck it on her car. He told her what it was and she said, "maybe that explains why some young people honked and gave me a thumbs up at a stoplight." But, she wasn't homophobic though.

I remember explaining transgender people to my grandmother (as i had a crush on a trans man at the time). I told her that the individual is born the wrong physical gender (using words she would understand best) and its like they're stuck in a body that doesn't match their mind. I remember her turning to me with this really sad face and saying "that sounds awful". I was kind of taken aback and thought she might have been messing with me. This was in 2019 and I figured everyone had their own ideas on how they thought it worked. She was really struck in that moment and it was interesting to see such a genuine reaction when she understood.

my grandma was the same way. When I came out to her she was cool! She was born in the 1920s, and her upbringing taught her that that kind of stuff is sick, not OK. But she was old enough to be over all that, and she listen to her heart. I actually came out to her because my girlfriend was getting evicted from her apartment, and I was really worried about her and didn’t know what to do, so I confided in my grandma. “Why doesn’t she stay with us while she looks for a new place?” was her response.
I miss my grandma so much.

I think the common reason for it is, "people will be more careful around the vehicle", but nobody, ever, is going to follow the idea: "Oh, yeah, I was definitely going to intentionally crash into you and run you off the road prior to learning that there was a baby in your vehicle."

With other languages, it's much harder to properly use gender-neutral language.
I.e. in german, the available options mostly include special characters, are barely pronounceable, or imported wholesale from another language (as far as I'm aware). It's probably worse with romantic languages were everything is gendered.

Many years ago I was sent to pick up this guy from the airport so I could bring him to our armored unit.
I find him and his stereotypical Colonel father at the airport, his father is just harping at him going "Look, I know you didn't want to do any of this military stuff but your mom and I are fed up with you being such a girl. You're a man. You can't be having these thoughts and wants of other men" and all these other things I can hear as I am approaching because this dude is just being all military ham loud. And he gets to the end of his rant/speach going "So this is for your own good, a tank unit will be what makes you a REAL man."
And it was at this point I knew why I was specifically chosen to pick this guy up from the airport. I adjust my uniform, an put on the best bounce skip I have had an go right up to the guy an go roughly "Hey there new bestie, you ready to go start your career locked away in a big ol' tank with three other sweaty men for months on end with no other contact but their sweaty bodies in such a confined locked place?" Put my arm around his hips, put my hand into his back pocket, wink at his Colonel father. An proceed to push him along with me in my skip making him have to skip with me.
Slowly the words I say to him dawn upon him an his face just lights up in the biggest brightest smile. While the words also dawn on his machoman father and his face just sinks into the deepest frown of shock I ever seen on a person. The guy met his future husband on a deployment and are still together.

You know, for the people saying being gay or trans is 'against nature' I love how nature itself debunks their claim, like:
There's plenty of examples of animals being gay and bisexual (mostly bi but you get the point), animals like Koalas, lions, elephants, sheep/rams, ect.
And then trans, like, clownfish. Clownfish have a dominant female and smaller male, if the female dies the male puts on weight and transitions into a female.
And I'm just- There's nothing more natural than animals, they are the natural world so like ???
Their statement is actually factually false.

And the whole "You're born as either male or female" thing is clearly false as well. A friend of my mom's was born intersex and has been asexual all their life. It's not even that uncommon. How can anything that happens in nature at a statistically significant rate be "unnatural"? It's just that these troglodytes live such insular lives that anything that happens outside their tiny data set is unthinkable to them. They make up fake rules in their head to keep a complex world that scares and confuses them more easily understandable.

Shortly after my grandmother died, I came out as bisexual. I hated to think about what she would have thought of me, as we were very close. When telling this to my mother, she told me a story she had heard from a staff member at my grandmother's old age home. The staff member's son was getting married to another man, and their entire family cut them off. Because she worked in a home full of old people, she was scared to say anything. Cautiously, she mentioned it to my grandmother. A day after her son got married, my grandmother came to her late at night saying: "Well? I'm waiting, show me pictures of the wedding!" My grandmother was 80, and this came as an extremely pleasant surprise. R.I.P, Granny💜

I have an elderly relative who is extremely homophobic - I’m pansexual myself, and my husband is very much an ally to the LBGTQ+ community, so there’s been a few ugly arguments through the years. Several years back this person put a rainbow sticker on the back hatch of her car - nobody said a word, and it became the behind the scenes family joke between all of us. Then one day while I was dropping off some groceries for her, and found her out in the garage, furiously attempting to remove the bumper sticker…when I asked her why, she snapped “Oh as if you didn’t know!” at me and went on one of her well-worn tirades about homosexuality being disgusting, blah blah blah, and then complained bitterly that she couldn’t get the sticker off.
So I told her that I’d heard that Coke (the soda, not the other thing, lol) worked really well to remove glue and that she should liberally apply it to both the sticker and the surrounding area and leave it to soak for at least 24 hours and left.
    Ps:
Hey - I wasn’t lying…it DID remove the sticker & residue (along with the paint in that entire area 😇).

There is also ones that a neuter but use masculine form [this can lead to some confusion in some cases] (he, man, guys...). And there are words for things that cannot have gender (it... that is all I can think of at the moment); this is reserved for objects and a few other things like rocks and trees. Sarcasm is to use something in a manner that it doesn't fit. Like I will sometimes feign protest to not do what I was asked but saying, "You're not my real [insert opposite gender parental title here]." I do this to everyone, including parents. E.G. My dad asks me to do something and I respond, "I don't have to listen to you. You're not my real mom."

    If you're wondering,
"Where the hell is my Straight Pride month?!" "Where is my straight rights march or parade?"
Just be thankful that you are not subject to the hate, fear, violence and discrimination that necessitates a straight pride month, march or parade.
We're not doing it to be "in your face" We're doing it to let the bigots and haters know that we are who we are. And that no amount of their hate or more appropriately their fear, (because that is ultimately where it begins) will make us go away.
We're here. We're among you. Most of you see us every day. You interact with us, ride the bus or maybe even carpool with us. You live next door and never even realize it. We're real. We're not ashamed. We love who we love, and are who we are. We live our lives. We do this in the face of violence, hate bigotry, and discrimination. We go on even when some of us are KILLED for being who we are. We feel. We cry. We remember. We honor. We carry on. We pull together. We love. We laugh. We smile. We care. We try. We do. We just are. And we always will, because we will not be forced to live a life that is not ours to live. We are proud of that! THAT is what Pride means to me.
Some still judge others by the amount of melanin in their skin. Society at large has rejected such bias and discrimination.
Yet people like myself are largely judged by something equally as uncontrollable as skin tone. Our identities.
If somebody is not harming you, creeping on you, messing with kids, or doing other harm by living their lives, then LET THEM BE!
There are bad apples in every bunch. Just like society rejects a killer or r@pist, we too, reject the monsters among humanity. Regardless of their preference or identities.
Look, I don't want some big LGBT++ superiority thing. We're not superior. We're not inferior either. WE ARE ALL HUMAN! We just want to live our lives as we see fit, in peace.
I don't want to be in your face. I just want to be.

I once had a panic attack in class because my teacher yelled at me no proper reason. Two weeks prior she told us to prepare a presentation about something, I don't even remember my topic... Anyways, she also told us that in case we had the next wednesday free we didn't have to do it. We had the wednesday off. So of course I did not do the presentation. Half of the class didn't. But. She decided to scold my friend and straight up yell at me. Because of that I started to panic. As I was full on crying she thought that it would be a great idea to misgender me together with the transphobic kids. Later another girl noticed that I wasn't just crying. I was allowed to go outside and stayed away from class for half an hour.
Half a year later I work in a flower shop. My Co-workers respect my pronouns and call me by my name. Not my Deadname. I feel so much more respected there. Plus I am like a learning experience for everyone else because I am the first trans male. I get respected by my family and finally (after a year of coming out) get into trans therapy.
I am pretty happy now. But I still hate this lady. She obviously didn't like me and I know it wasn't only because I was trans. I did some pretty respect less things. But still it wasn't necessary for her to tell me "I would never be a boy.".

As a straight man of color it's so painful hearing stories of trans people who have to endure this shit from hateful cisgender people.
I know two personally. They are human, looking for acceptance in an unaccepting world. One of them said I was the first person to acknowledge his preferred pronouns (transitioned to male). The others in his own family don't, mostly because his mom won't let them.
I love these two people to death, they're the best humans I've ever known, so when others don't acknowledge their preferred pronouns, they're both extremely hurt. Those who aren't part of the LGBT community can't fully understand how painful it is, not even me.
EDIT Monday February 21, 2022 - I've since come out as nonbinary. I don't like the stigma of being a man, all the macho expectations that society creates for men, or knowing that I've contributed to the suffering of women.

Back in middle school I had just discovered that I was asexual, and I sat next to a kid who always went “THAT’S GAY” whenever his friends said anything. One day they were talking about who they thought were hot, and I was somehow pulled into the conversation. When I told them I was ace, I was genuinely expecting that kid to blow up into a flurry of “OH MY GOD UR GAY!”. But instead, he asked what that was, asked me some inoffensive, non-intrusive questions, and then went, “Oh ok” and immediately went back to talking with his friends and saying “THATS GAAY”. Me&my friends joked that if he saw his friends walking close to each other, he’d be like “THATS GAY YOURE GAY OMG” but if he saw an actual homosexual couple he would be perfectly okay with that.

A few things came to mind while watching this video.
    1. The Japanese language has pronouns but people seldom use them and many words which have gender pairs in English I have simply one form in Japanese. For example, “自の” can mean “his” or “her.” Looking at Japanese literature, it seems that there is a general uncertainty about gender in the culture as well. That is, young men are uncertain about what it means to be a man. This was played on in the manga/anime “ Ramana 1/2“ in which a teenage boy could be transformed into a girl if splashed with cold water. This manga/anime is very popular in Japan.
    2. About 50 years ago I read a very interesting paper describing the fact that approximately one or two babies per 10,000 births are sexually indeterminate at birth. Back then, doctors would either flip a coin or ask the parents whether they wanted a boy or a girl and then make a surgical “adjustment”. So, I wondered how many of that generation were actually of one gender and were surgically altered to appear to be of another. Life would have been much simpler if people had just waited until puberty. At the very least, life would be easier if one could state TBD, instead of being forced to designate either M or F on a birth certificate. I noticed that a lot of people use the term, “designated at birth.“ I wonder how many of them actually know what that means.
    3. Of course transgender issues involve the individual psyche, as well as any physical attributes, and are much more complicated than a visual inspection at birth. Perhaps, we should adopt the German convention of referring to children as neuter and not identify them sexually until they have completed puberty.
    4. Some straight women cannot conceive children, either. It’s not like transgender is creating a new problem.
Disclaimer. These are all personal observations and not based on any qualifications I have. Please feel free to ignore them completely.

A world where kids are quite literally genderless until puberty, where they naturally start to steer towards one of the two gender identities. And if you're wondering about how sexuality comes into play, don't worry, they get existential with that later on.

@Richdragon To be fair, children are pretty scary.

@@fluffysprout so blue and red are on opposite sides of the color spectrum. Our eyes cannot actually see beyond both colors so our brains create a new color to fill in the gap.

@@fluffysprout look up magenta on scishow. They explain it quite well. Basically, purple and magenta are a mixture of blue and red light, but the wavelengths between blue and red are green and yellow. The cones in our eyes (we have 3 red, blue, and green) fire whenever we see colors, but when we see purple and magenta, only the red and blue fire. The brain goes "oh my god red and blue fired but not green??? But green is between red and blue??? Wellp, better make up a colour I guess, since it's clearly not green..." So purple and magenta don't actually have a wavelengths on the visible spectrum, but we can see them anyways

I remember a story from school "The story of X" by Lois Gould, It's a short read but it was about a kid raised without gender stereotyping, and how adults would be annoyed by the mere idea of a baby which is neither male nor female to the public, however once X got to school the kids had no trouble with it. It was an odd story, but one of the few from school I really do remember
