Additionally, for those that are looking for specifics - Isabelle will tell you what you need more of if you ask her for the current rating, but you need 250-300 fences and 150-200 pieces of furniture. Make sure to have a decent amount of crafted furniture as well as purchased furniture from Nook's shop and from the Nook Miles catalog. From what I understand, flowers generally aren't specifically mentioned, but I can't imagine that they're completely unnecessary, just like trees, so keep a decent amount of them around your island for sure. Good luck getting your own 5 star island!
I was told by Isabelle to get flowers, and she made me spend 9,600 bells on them.

The nice thing about flowers is that you will never be penalized for having too many. You have to meet specific requirements in order to be eligible for 5 stars at all, but flowers are useful for boosting your hidden point rating.
I love how the first guy just went for a natural setting instead of going insane with terraforming and putting lots in!

After seeing this I have no idea how my island isn’t 5* I’ve pretty much covered the place head to toe
If you cram a bunch of the same items in a 15x15 space (from what I've heard) it will be considered overbarren
I have a 4 star island i am almost to a full on 5 star island i just need to add more fencing and mor DIY items and nook miles items also.
Check if you have items dropped, since that lowers island perfomance. Make sure to also install more bridges and inclines.

Villagers always visit the campsite by random, doesn't matter how many stars you have. The cards are just an option if you don't get the villager you want.

Not everyone is going to have a beautifully terraformed island with everything looking neat and organised in such a short amount of time, it takes time to get the right items that’ll make your island look great
This just shows that “5 star” is meaningless. His island is just random crap thrown everywhere and my island has specific areas with themes that are actually built but apparently it’s “cluttered” (too many items in one square apparently)
I think that means there's dropped items on the ground, and not places items.

I accidentally got a 5 star rating while trying to move all my rocks to a specific area, so my island is literally COVERED in mannequins right now. I mean I have a lot of flowers and fences as well but I only ever had four stars. One day I just discovered a jacobs ladder

I discovered one, too (they call it lily of the valley in NH) but am still at 4 stars. So I'm confused. Isabelle said we had too much stuff on the ground; I found *one* twig. I also have one thing of turnips in a garden. So idk what Isabelle's problem is. One twig!

Me had a two star island
In my opinion it is way too easy to get a 5 star island in this game. I’ve been playing since GameCube so maybe I’m biased to veteran players but I would have liked to have had some sort of challenge.
