Just about anywhere. I have the Chameleon F-Loop 2.0 and it's used daily here in the shack. SWR reading are never over 1.5:1 covering 80-10m. As you mentioned, the nulls are a Godsend for knocking down noise levels. When the weather isn't killer (SE Texas, at a highly humid 90-100 degrees) I'll take it down to the front yard or driveway, in the back. I've never officially done POTA, but I've taken my IC-705 + loop to some local parks which provide excellent shade. Hamfest setups in the tailgate section brings a lot of attention to my table as well.The great part of a mag loop is that you're no longer in need of ground radials, poles, stakes, or trees ('cept for shade), and because you are actually tuning the variable capacitor there is no need to drag along an AT. I use a tiny A/B coaxial switch box that's used at home or elsewhere. Position "A" takes the antenna straight to the rig, while Position "B" diverts it to one of those very lightweight Rig Expert analyzer sticks. I in find it pretty easy to tune the antenna until the stick tells me "It's go time", switch to "A" and then - on the way to making contacts. For most occasions, 5-10 watts is all I need to have fun, indoors or outside. Enjoyed your video - Thanks! 👍
I picked up a OM0ET MC-20 MLA back in Aug, and used it extensively until I was able to get my EFHW higher than 10ft...indoors even (I was able to WAC on 40M in my living room). Now, I tend to use my EFHW at my QTH and use the MLA for POTA activations, where it works great for digital work. Setup is a piece of cake...no need to hunt for trees, except for shade...no radials to run. Just mount it to a tripod, hook it up to the radio, and I'm ready to rock and roll. Plus, it plays well in areas/parks that are prone to having lots of noise, stores nicely into a 17" laptop bag (making it easy to transport), and only has around a 3ft footprint (tends to keep other park goers from walking into it).
Anywhere... to get away from the plasma TV and other QRM that surrounds my house ! 😃 I've just started building a mag-loop, still waiting for a few more parts, but it's already under construction... Will be for 10 and 15 meters, made with scrap piece of 7/8 inch Heliax and a Vacuum Variable capacitor. I'll set it up to be motor tuned, but on the tripod, I should be able to tune it manually for portable operation. Looking forward to trying it out!
I have an AlexLoop mag loop set up by my second desk in the shack. My main rig is an IC7300 with an end fed wire. The second rig is the AlexLoop with my Xiegu G90. I hunt POTA at 5 to 20 watts with the mag loop and it works great. Another big benefit of the mag loop set up indoors is that you can operate during storms without worry of lightning strikes. When I go portable, I just put the loop fully assembled in the back of my van, toss in a tripod, and there's no delay when I get there. Set up and running in just a few minutes. This was a really great video for several reasons. Does a great job showing operating Too many videos skip setup though, they assume you wouldn't care, but newer hams certainly would want to see more actual station setups
I have the F-loop with the additional "power compensator" capacitor puck to increase the power-handling capability, up to 60W on SSB or 25W full-duty-cycle on CW or digital modes. I have tested this as a receive-only antenna so far, and was able to pick up very many FT8 signals on 20 metres. If you are going to operate on this antenna while sitting right next to it, you must sit in the nulls to avoid excessive RF exposure.
Tried a mag loop (the very one you're using here). Didn't impress me, TBH. Performance not even close to an EF random wire. Returned it after several weeks of testing. Glad to see it's working for you!

I have a mfj telescopic whip out to around 102 inches leaning on a plant sticking out of my 2nd floor balcony at an angle in So Cal. Yaesu 991A 95 watts been hitting Japan on 10 no problem.
I have the older version of the Chameleon F Loop. Love it! Good for my hoa situation and very easy to set up portable. It's a nice easy day compared to putting up a wire. I use an antenna switcher and an antenna analyzer to tune. Even easier!
As much fun as it sounds like your having, you may like the next upgrade coming for the FLOOP series, almost an automatic tuning feature ! Video to come

I once did the math on these. Basically, what I remember is that you get 10% or less efficiency on 40m, about 20% on 20m, and 50% or maybe a bit more on 10m. You get about 2-3 db of gain in the plain. I’ve had success with them. At the last solar maximum, I made a contact in turkey. You’re probably radiating 5w on 20m. Not horrible. Is it worth $300? Probably not.
I have the Alex Loop and just ordered the Cha Loop 3.0. I love loop antennas and have had some amazing DX contacts on 10 meters with the Alex Loop. I am very interested in how the two will compare from the same location and height. When the weather is rough, I set up my Alex Loop in my 2nd story shack (by a window) and it still gets out. The real test for us will be when the solar cycle is low and the bands are more challenging. Thanks for the video, you talked me into taking the plunge on this loop (I got the TOTAL package). KD2ZTA

Thanks for the video. The coax loop worked great. I can't wait for you to compare the aluminum to the coax. My loop is sitting by my feet in my shack in the bag it came in. Chameleon came out with a remote tuner servo for this 3.0 loop and later the 2.0 loop. It must be really slow turning. But there is no servo for direction. I think they are missing out on that feature. Someday I will have to try contact you on HF. I am done harvesting so I will have to get back on the radio and hunt POTA. Thanks Kevin KA0KAE
I have a number of loops, some homebrewed to varying degrees. MFJ make a few loop tuner boxes for example, MFJ-933C as well as variants of similar design that will handle 100+ watts. I have had good luck operating 40m, 20m and to a lesser extent 80m on portable loops and up to 100 watts from an FT-891. I have worked a number of Dx stations in Europe on phone and also on digital modes with loops. The best way to tune them is with a NanoVNA or some other antenna analyzer. Tuning for maximum noise only gets you to close to resonance. Loops are very high Q especially at lower frequencies relative to loop sizes. The useable bandwidth is a few KHz at any given setting. Loop tuning is also very to temperature, humidity and the local environment.

I have the FT-891 also, if you might not already know then this might be of use to you. how I send a carrier is I press PTT and Up button on the mic and it sends a carrier and changes the meter from power to SWR, very convenient and it works great with the MFG-939Y auto tuner, saves having to go into menus and change the meter from power to SWR and from SSB to AM and Back. You just have to go to the menu and set the AM power level to 5 Watts. Check out my channel, I have the MFJ-935C and have had good success with it, made a couple of videos today.
That's a great set-up and thanks for sharing; with that said i'd be concerned transmitting too close from a loop, imo i'd stay at least 7 ft from it at 20W and at least 15 ft at 100W, what do you think about that?

Bob, good question! I have had this in my Mini van, my Jeep and the back seat of the pickup.IT all vits into a small duffel bag, Except for the aluminum loop and even that is not very big. I can not believe I did not show that setup, Thanks for the reminder. I will add that next time i make a loop video.

@@BobGarrett66 if it will help, my OM0ET MC-20 MLA will fit in a 17" laptop bag. If I didn't have my X6100 and battery pack in their own cases, I could fit everything but the tripod in it. As I like to keep them encased ;), I can fit everything in the laptop bag and a single strap tactical pack w/ the tripod in the "drink pocket" on the pack, easily transportable in a passenger seat and into the field.

I'm strongly consodering picking up one of these style antennas, as someone who travels for work to hotels and apartments and also does a lot of POTA. I have an 891 and an 817, and I've also been really wanting to get my hands on a KX2 so I've been really enjoying your videos. As far as tuning the mag loop...I see you mention sending a carrier. I'm still fuzzy on sending carriers. So I set the radio to low power (5 watts) and then just pick a random mode like cw or digital and just key down? Is that really all? As far as using a QRP rig like the 817, still set it to low power? Not sure what low power on the 817/Kx2 even amounts to wattage wise...Just want to make sure I know what I'm doing and do it correctly so that I don't damage anything. Thank you again.
Kody, thanks for being part of the channel, yes once you know how to turn the power down on your radio to lets say 5 watts. You would then select Digital or AM and push the ptt. you should at that point see the SWR reading ( if your menu is turned on) you will need to consult your manual for that part. ** on Yaesu, it will be the display that shows SWR /PWR. This will NOT tune your antenna, it just lets you know how far off or how close you have your antenna tuned. Feel free to email me if you have additional questions. Do any issues arise if inner loop isn't in relatively perfect alignment with outer loop? Does the distance of inner loop top to outer loop matter much? Just curious about how finicky they may or may not be.
I wondered the same thing, with this loop at least, the way you put it together it is in the same position each time you use it. And that makes this loop fun to use.

An IC-2300 is an FM radio. If you want long distance on 2M, you need to be using an SSB/CW radio with a long horizontal yagi antenna for weak signal work.
No, it doesn't really work like that. Plus, each radio is just a little different, so the sensitivity will be off . And leaving your coax connected and turning it this way, really is not that hard. You might be surprised. 73
@@hamradiowithkevin You’re probably right. I tried it again with a NanoVNA, but couldn’t get anything other than infinite SWR. I’m hoping that putting it on the radio and just listening will work, though I’m not confident I can do it well.
Attaching to a tripod is easy with the 1/4 20 camera thread on the base of the tuning unit of this loop. I use only a 1/4-20 thumb screw and hand tighten. Super fast and simple.
@@stargazer7644 An EFHW is a monopole. A dipole, regardless of wavelengths, is a double pole. A dipole can be fed anywhere within the wire such as an off center fed dipole. If it is fed on the end it is a monopole or more known as end fed.

Using the Floop on high power, I would get the "remote tuner " option . It is safer and easier to tune.
A mag loop always gives me a nausea when sitting near to it and transmitting in just a few minutes.
I like mine. I bought it on a whim but it’s a solid performer.

20 meters is a breeze with these. I regularly make contacts with my G90 from the kitchen/dining area.

yes, RF exposure is a concern, you should definitely be aware of your limits. 90% of the time I use 10 watts or less.
i bolted a 10kv 500pf doorknob cap onto my cha-3 and can use 50W

Yes, mag loops have very narrow bandwidth, you have to tune them every time you change frequencies.

I have the FT-891, amazing radio for the money and one of the most underrated radios in Ham Radio!
Anyway, how I send a carrier is I press PTT and Up button on the mic and it sends a carrier and changes the meter from power to SWR, very convenient and it works great with the MFG-939Y auto tuner, saves having to go into menus and change the meter from power to SWR and from SSB to AM and Back.
You just have to go to the menu and set the AM power level to 5 Watts.

Do any issues arise if inner loop isn't in relatively perfect alignment with outer loop? Does the distance of inner loop top to outer loop matter much? Just curious about how finicky they may or may not be.
I wondered the same thing, with this loop at least, the way you put it together it is in the same position each time you use it. And that makes this loop fun to use.
What tripod are you using? I'm running an F-Loop 2.0 on an Amazon Basics and am nervous that the plastic will break soon.

No that will not work. HF only
An IC-2300 is an FM radio. If you want long distance on 2M, you need to be using an SSB/CW radio with a long horizontal yagi antenna for weak signal work.

No, it doesn't really work like that. Plus, each radio is just a little different, so the sensitivity will be off . And leaving your coax connected and turning it this way, really is not that hard. You might be surprised. 73
@@hamradiowithkevin You’re probably right. I tried it again with a NanoVNA, but couldn’t get anything other than infinite SWR. I’m hoping that putting it on the radio and just listening will work, though I’m not confident I can do it well.

What mount is used on the tripod to attach mag loop?
Attaching to a tripod is easy with the 1/4 20 camera thread on the base of the tuning unit of this loop. I use only a 1/4-20 thumb screw and hand tighten. Super fast and simple.

What is an EFHW dipole? 9:48 Dipoles are center fed, EFHW is, well, end fed.
An EFHW antenna is also a half wave dipole. It is just fed from the end instead of the center.
@@stargazer7644 An EFHW is a monopole. A dipole, regardless of wavelengths, is a double pole. A dipole can be fed anywhere within the wire such as an off center fed dipole. If it is fed on the end it is a monopole or more known as end fed.
