Among President Sirleaf's many commendable accomplishments, her pioneering leadership as the first elected female head of state in Africa; her commitment to peace and democratic governance and her work toward reconciliation in war-torn Liberia; and her economic and social reforms that led to recovery in Liberia, are just a few of the reasons she was selected as this year's recipient for the Award for Outstanding Leadership in International Development.
