- In the middle of the Croatian countryside, nestled in a wooded valley lies a freaky and spooky ancient ABANDONED medieval style village … but one of the houses freaked me out! Does someone still live here ALONE in the forest?

Quick guide to historic Yugoslavian house building. No planning permission - people decide to build where they find somewhere to build. First person builds two rooms - no stairs. They then move in. One kitchen/living room, one workshop. They then build stairs up and a second floor (and maybe subsequently third floor. They then move upstairs. Person two moves in downstairs and starts building nearby.....two rooms. They then build steps and a second floor (and maybe a subsequent floor). They then move upstairs. Two houses, so two more builders move into the two ground floor rooms.....and they both start building two rooms each nearby..........it's a clever bit of communistic house building. Soon they have a village.

You mentioned the bricks in each room?
When I was a teen many years ago, my mom and I went to tour a home that was built in the 1800’s.
There were bricks just like that in each room upstairs.
Mom said they were used as bed warmers!
They would heat them near the fire, and then out them in the bed so it would be nice and toasty all night.

This is just about THE creepiest place that you have ever visited ! That village after dark is like something out of a Hammer horror movie !

Really enjoyed that! I looked that village up....400 years old! You're really putting your all into this channel and it's so appreciated. My mums been in hospital for months now and I'm so tense at the end of the day so i watch your behind the scenes videos while everyone in the house is sleeping. Although it would be fun to live in a spanking village (as long as you are the one who does spanking 😂), all those boards are actually cutting boards for vegetables and such... A bit of a weird habit in Croatia to put kitchen utensils up on the walls, especially back in the old days at these old villages. Thanks Matt for the great content and take care!

What a video! Such history just in stone. Amazing. There might not have been much in way of photos or knowing the people but the few items that were there shows how far away from everything these people were living. Just amazing. Well done Matt on making it out alive from the the weird little steps and thorny bushed. You have the scars to proof it.

Great video again , Slovenia is the biggest corn producers in Europe, and about the corn cobs, they use them as a energy source in the chimney... A now a Slovenian Operational Group is exploring options to use the corn cob as an new energy source on farms. The big logs haning outside the houses are to hang corn to dry, they braids it in long lines.... about the language, Russia and Slovenia alphabet is both Cyrillic, so it look similar.......I have to ask, are you in Slapnik, its difficult to see in the dark outside, it's an interesting place ❤ probably the entire family lived in these small farm houses, parent's there children and grand children and grandparents, on each floor, it was very normal, slovenian ( then Yugoslavia) people was very poor...Next on u wishlist must be a machete 😅

Great explore, although the houses didn't seem to be that functional and silly question, but where were the toilets 🚽 in or out? I don't know how you do it finding your way in the dark. I would have been so turned around, lost bound. Keep well, and God bless. ❤
The one house that looked too newish was too clean. I truly believe that someone is still residing there. I saw a new purple lantern hanging and used tea candles. Plus, I didn't see mouse droppings. 🤔❤

Hi Matt. The beastie you saw & didn't like the look of ( long spidery thing ) was probably a Scutigera ( house centipead ) Very freaky looking things.
Not sure if this is the abandoned Popovici village but if it is…google says that the village was founded by Bosnian refugees in 1689 which is why the houses architecture was different to other regional houses. Really interesting explore!
Ah Matt, the little jokes you crack in these videos never fail to make me laugh! Great explore location too! Very rustic. Not sure if you could maybe take photos of some of the letters and then translate later at your leisure if you have the time?
Also, with dodgy stairs a trick I learned from firefighters is to go down them backwards, keep your weight on the step above and slide your foot across the step below to test for weaknesses.

awe I miss being in Croatia. I think you would have enjoyed some of my relatives houses Matt. They made their own wine and bread, had super nice ovens outside for the bread, tended chickens and had cows :D I loved being there as a kid. They had those huge jugs as well 😅 They lived a very simple life but were happy. even after the war. It's not as old as the village you are in but all the stuff they had like old plows and old kitchens and oll of that. And they all had a well on the property ah I loved it SO much
Ah, this sounds fantastic. Sometimes I think we live to complicated. You say your relatives had a simple life BUT they would have had a very “rich” life, not financially maybe, but in culture- I would love to live like that, and as you say , for a child it would be idilic ❤
Just done a quick google search and it looks like that military box could have had mortar shells and looks to be from Yugoslavia, 120mm is the calibre

I have that same square flashlight, but mine wasn't as cheap as yours was. Its rechargable with a USB mine is. I don't use it much, only if I need to pick up my granddoggers' pooh at night lol, but I've never had to charge it and I've had it for ages.

The sink type of thing in the wall , most likely is exactly that, we stayed in a old house in southern France and although not in use there was something similar and the owner said that water would be brought in by bucket and the dirty water would drain to the outside.

Jokes aside, another great vid. I have the same thing as you where I love picturing the lives of people - even "boring" objects can have such a connection to the past, and the individuals life.
I found this explore fascinating, such a very different way of life was lived there, very basic & probably very poor, it was a very interesting investigation into how others lived in a very different country to our own.

the stone square is a beer square, its a very old fashioned way of making beer, we still have i t in the uk in one brewery called Samuel smiths, but they call them Yorkshire squares here, but in olden days you would ferment beer in a square and that is a stone square.we took the idea from europe, as they made beer before britain did
