Sarah and Kevin, the best part of this video today was seeing how refreshed you both look ! Sarah had a fresh, cheerful smile and she just looks fantastic! I think alot of folks are just negative and make comments out of pure jealousy. You two have worked hard to get to where you are and probably the smartest part of your jounery started in Arizon with the Dave Ramsey plan. Compared to the old videos of Sarah trying out "natural " hair dye to now watching her teach women (and men) the art of canning and preserving is a testament to your growth, maturity and drive! I so agree with that comment... I rent... I have no garden... I will never have a Homestead... but this channel is my favorite... out of all the many out there for homesteading they really know how to do it right... they are organized,they are efficient, they are smart, they are practical and it's just a joy to watch them. Everything prospers at their hands because they also have a lot of wisdom. And they inspire, at whatever lifestyle you live.

When you first got the big new green house, I thought you were going commercial farming and not much homestead. As you have revealed your plans, I believe you have made good choices to insure your future. As you grow and harvest your goods, keep in mind that perhaps your biggest harvest is the inspiration you give others to provide for themselves and their families.

Cindy Clark- I am a New Hampshire farm wife, who teaches sustainability when time allows. I try to impress upon my students, that it is not an All or NOTHING endeavor. You can jump in on many levels. Most of my workshops were organic gardening and food preservation, followed by back yard chickens and rabbits, followed by living off grid. We had the opportunity to build our farm cottage to be both on of off grid and can switch back and forth, mostly in stormy/snowy weather. Kevin and Sarah are taking their farm forward in stages. We tried the fabric for weeds and it has saved us a lot of work! We have a small green house. Start small and see what works for you ~ Diane

Great use of your greenhouse. I don’t know why but it drives me crazy when people question another persons financial investments. Income and investments were always considered personal growing up and only shared if that person offered to. Please don’t feel you need to justify your investments to anyone unless you decide too. As always, looking forward to the next video. Hope it don’t cost to much 😂
I totally agree with you it is nobody's business what our individual financial standing is and what we do with our money. People are so rude these days to think that You Tuber creators owe an explanation for every step they take and spend money on. Well they bloody don't (excuse the french). It makes me so mad to think creators need to answer to their subscribers of things that have nothing to do with their content but is very personal. Kevin and Sarah please don't ever feel that you have owe us an explanation of your financial dealings. It is your business and your business only. I just love watching the content. Michelle
@@bohemiangypsy99 While I agree, basically, with the position you are taking, I have a slightly different view. I think that Kevin was TEACHING as he explained the financial and planning parts. While I agree that Kevin should not feel compelled to explain what, why, how they do what they do, I believe he is WISE (and that's much better than just SMART) enough to realize that there are probably some followers--among the thousands who watch their videos--who would benefit greatly from hearing Kevin talk about WHY they do some of the things they do. Notice that he didn't give dollar amounts today. Rather, he gave a comparative analysis of why they switched their soil for the pots, for example.
If I were a young person desiring to start homesteading, I would have gained a tremendous positive benefit from Kevin's "mini workshop" he presented today. Kevin and Sarah are just such nice souls that they put it all off as though they're trying to justify what they're doing. But, I'll bet that, deep inside, they know they are really being great teachers to the masses who watch their channel.

I obtained some buckets similar to yours. I drilled holes in the rim and added rope handles. It makes moving pots soooooo easy!!! I can easily move them completely full and fully grown by myself. Just an upgrade idea for you 😜❤️

There’s a spot on the South side of the garage where the previous owners had an above ground pool. My goal is to put a small greenhouse and path that links the orchard, greenhouse, chickens and garden.

Kevin, I saw you chomping on the vegy as you picked it at the throw away garden! Best food ever! Fresh off the vine. You two are blessed. You do the work and are answered with a bounty. And don't forget to buy and start your lemon tree in the new greenhouse Kevin! Remember that the best time to plant a tree is 10 years ago, and the second best time is today! Go for it!
That is a great yield for a small family with not a lot of growing space! It can be even 'shorter' than 50 ft to satisfy a small group with fresh veggies. I think that one field could be the Winter canning or frozen stored sauces, paste and pickling (saw Jalepenos) for a small family (or one person) too. Great idea!

I have raised beds, so it’s kinda similar to your pots. I started adding construction sand. The sand allows the plants to push through and helps the water go through the pot. My garlic is so much bigger when I started this. Also, all my other plants do much better with the sand mixed in.
What kind of ratio do you use?

You two are fun to watch. I canned for years and my husband grew the garden! If we were in the garden together we butted heads! He helped with the canning. He passed 5 1/2 years ago! Lots of great memories and enjoyable times in 53 years married!

Bags are handy and what I did this year for my garden beds. I added more vermiculite and fertiliser. I also mix it with cheaper compost/soil for volume. Love the excess harvest from the farm garden

KEVIN, put up a mailbox at your gardens like I do. Nope, there's no mail delivery there, they hold my extra items such as seed packets, labeling sticks, wire ties, string and so forth but the most important item is the ever ready SALT SHAKER!

I'm so jealous of those gorgeous peppers! Our tomatoes did great this year but I can't grow a pepper to save my life! We are going to try buckets next year as we have pretty poor soil here and a very shady yard for a designated garden space. Buckets would be perfect...put one here, put one there, where ever they can get the most sunshine! Love you guys!
You might want to check out Jess at Roots and Refuge farms. She had her best pepper year last year and figured out the reason she hadn't been successful before. I think it was not putting out the peppers until they were very developed AND also making sure the overall temperature outside was warm enough both day and night. Best to find her pepper video for the complete details as I'm just paraphrasing. :)

I must have gotten a bad batch of Kellogg's raised bed and potting soil this year, as it was lifeless and mostly dried out and blew away in between waterings, leaving just wood chips. I could not get one carrot to grow taller than 1 inch in a pot of it. I had to really fertilize to get anything to grow. After top-dressing with some pricey compost my plants look way better, and don't appear to need much more. It's a good product and most people have better luck with it, so who knows? Good luck! Y’all, Constance over at A Good Life Farm (Cosmopolitan Cornbread) had major problems with the Kelloggs soil you purchased. She even had a soil test done and contacted the company over the results. It might be a good idea to reach out to her before using it 😣

Just wanted to let you know that we filled our raised beds with that potting mix. It was super alkaline. Our ph meter topped out, at 9 with it. We had to do a lot of amending to try to get the soil right. I just wanted you to know so that you don’t run into the same issues. You might want to do some soil testing on it. After we found out we started checking online and a lot of other people had the same issues.
I used Kellogg's this year in my grow bags and after putting a lot of Tricare mix, calcium and epsom salt, my plants are finally producing. Thank you for the information. This makes sense to me and why my plants suffered for most of the summer. I will never, ever purchase Kellogg's again.
Infrastructure, although costly, can usually be leveraged over many years. In the long run it becomes cost effective though! Love seeing all of your progress! Take care and best wishes.

I have to be honest when I say, your Homestead channel is the best! I DO NOT GET STRESSED watching you do your chores, or milking your cows, feeding your chickens and harvesting stuff. Your homestead looks neat and clean and even the animals look clean and happy! You guys make sure to not only take care of yourselves but also all your animals. Kevin does not abuse his body by pulling or pushing heavy stuff. Your cows look very calm and so with the pigs. Your homesteading is so natural, that everything just comes out very productive. You are both blessed and so are your children, You will always have food on your table because of your hard work. One year while I was a single parent of 3, and really struggling, the kids wanted to grow watermelons. I had no time for a garden...but there was a strip parallel to my driveway that someone had made with brick edges. It was kind of a mess, some flowers, had some weeds and was shaded by a big tree. I told the kids we'd plant, but the shade was a problem, and tree roots were all over...we just planted in the ground, watered as needed, and grew a nice crop of small watermelons! Gardens do surprise you!
I try and remember to think “how can i do this rather than why I cannot do this”

Such a fun video. We also had an “extras” garden that we planted after we had seen yours actually. 😃. Anyway, it was growing well until we had 10 days of rain. Hahahaha. We got a little bit from the few tomato plants, but nothing to write home about. It was still fun to do. 😃💕

I used to judge livestock and your herd is healthy and happy and Beautiful! Wow what an accomplishment!
Just relating my experience with that exact potting mix: everything I put in it died. Twice. And a friend who used the product in her garden lost a lot of plants, others survived but were stunted. Others produced but were much delayed. If you haven't used that particular mix before, you might want to try it out on a small scale first. Like I said, just my experience.
mine didn't do well either until I added compost and a lot of fertilizer. Can't wait to see how theirs does though so I can fix mine correctly. These two teach me so much!!
Lots of awful reviews on this product.
I read through Home Depot reviews and people reported with photos of wood chips, painted wood, plastic, glass, shredded plastic, shredded rubber, etc. Makes me wonder where and how they make this stuff. I'll stick to making my own from leaves. The problem with mine is when it's ready it's filled with hundreds of those nasty plant eating sow bug roly-polys and I don't know how to remove them. They ate half of my pole beans soon after they sprouted.
yes I had tried it 2 yrs ago in a couple raised beds, to improve existing soil, and got invasive nutsedge in just those beds, plus the product had a ton of bark & twigs. Perhaps I got a bad batch? But I wouldn't buy it again.

if you make tomato row in greenhouse and use the string from above rafters hang down and twist around vines . at the top make a string hang on each side of tomato rows can hang row cover material to help keep the heat in around tomato when gets later in season to keep growing. also a idea is to make two sided gutters with ends and place above the planter tubs to grown lettuce kind of items at a slight angle to add water at one end and drain at the other with a hole there.,, no slugs, bugs, pest or no snakes to hide . if the tubs were closer to each side of gh. could park the tractor or other equipment down the middle of the gh. use for something as a playpen style cages down the center to start chicks and plant starts with heaters, lights, water to do at the same time.
I’m amazed how well your gardens are doing. I tried a small one this year but the only thing that did well is the cucumbers. Oh well there is always next year. Hopefully I can build a few raised beds this fall.
My cucumber plants tanked this year. My peppers are the only redeeming crop in my garden.
I had the same experience this year. It was my first garden and I was so excited when things started growing and then the growth stunted and a lot of my plants turned yellow and nothing but the cucumbers and a few zuchiniever really got going. I did a lot of research and found out the problem was with the soil and lack of nitrogen. Found a great soil recipe from Bumblebee Junction here on YT. I will be trying that in our raised beds next spring. Many people who commented on that video said they had tried the recipe they gave and they had their best production their garden had ever done. I had orginally wanted to go with the Kellog's but after reading really bad reviews I have decided to go with trying to build my own growing medium. I hope Sarah and Kevin have success with this product from Kellog but I'm not risking it.
Awesome video guys, just a heads up on Kelloggs soil, we use it to refill our raised beds and almost regret it. Soil is extremely woodchip or wood heavy. It actually took good year or two to compost down into good soil.
yes this is my experience too, plus I got nutsedge (invasive perennial weed, very hard to get rid)
I'm glad someone is mentioning that Kellog soil may not be the best choice. I've seen and read many people commenting that their soil (full of wood chips) actually killed their plants within weeks of planting and others saying their plants just weren't thriving. I also read a comment saying the place where the soil is produced in California is right next to a sweage plant. Not sure if that is the reason why but others commented that their soil smelled like human waste...soooo...
I love watching you guys. I had a beautiful little 4 -acre farm and adored every minute of it. I loved the hard work, the pleasure of my gardens, my animals, raised for meat except for my chickens. I did all my own canning from my gardens, fruit trees, and berry bushes. Unfortunately I lost my partner and had to return back to Houston because of a serious health issue. I miss my little piece of heaven but get so much joy looking in on you guys every day. It truly helps to bring me joy again so thank you.

I order several places online. When I see one that makes me laugh I buy it. Gotta have a good laugh sometimes!
I would line up all of the bags in front of the buckets. Then slowly fill the buckets. Get them in there now. It will give you something to do when it's raining outside.

Literally the chicken crossing the road (driveway). Loved it. Beautiful green house and great idea for growing. That truly was quite the harvest from left over plants.
God is most certainly blessing you each and every day. Your video reminds me in some ways of my early days on the farm and how we had a large garden that was used to feed the whole family all summer and winter. If it ever failed, we when hungry. So it was very important that we all dig in and work from sunup to sundown. It was hard work, but the reward was in all the filled canning jars - we had no freezer back in those days.

Do you not need a second pair of 60 buckets, when you exchange to spring; and something out of the box.....to get more effencincy into the greenhouse set the buckets in work height on a self build pallet (for the siderows a double pallet and for the inner rows a foursized pallet) so you don´t have to bend to the ground, and when exchange time comes, you can use the tractor and move them effortless around.
Someone mentioned before that it's not good to run a tractor on the woven weave fabric. Can puncture/tear it. But having them raised and easier to slide off onto a cart or dolly would be nice.
Good choice of Organic Raised Bed Soil! I used it this year in my Fabric Bags on my Patio and my plants and Flowers are doing great! Excited to see all the food your going to raise year round in your new Amazing Green House!

That loose chicken is eating the best of all of them. Plenty if bugs out of the cow patties and plenty if grain from the cows. She's loving life.
I love the big greenhouse. If you leave soil in the pots and keep it moist they act as a heat sink and radiate at night. If empty line them with plastic and fill with water. They would be under the tables you bring in in the late fall or winter.
Adding some clay loam to the soil helps with the cation exchange capacity of the potting mix because of the tiny clay platelets. The finer particles of vermiculite in that potting mix can play a similar role.

We had a farm in PA with cattle, pigs, meat chickens and layers, plus a greenhouse and big garden. My favorite saying was, “ how do you make a million dollars farming? Start with two million!” It was a satisfying lifestyle that dollars couldn’t measure, though.

Kevin is COMPLETELY correct when he talks about expenses when starting out, it's actually true for any endeavor.
In college I was taught that you can expect to have to put money into a project for 2 to 5 years before you actually see any type of a financial gain.
Even after you start making money you have to remember you're always going to have operating expenses like items to restock your supply, feeding the animals, purchasing seeds, dirt etc.
Sometimes, like with the potting soil, you really do have to take into consideration the value of your time.
I'm sure some people are going to jump in and say you gave up or are lazy for opting to get bags, I say you did right for your needs and put value on your time and effort in growing items.
