Korean: Listening Practice (Level 1, Dialogues 1 - 12)

  • If you want to practice your Korean Listening skills, watch this video.
    While learning a language, it is very important to practice your listening skills regularly. Otherwise, you will be like a "walking textbook" who can neither speak nor understand the speech you hear, even though you know all the grammar and words.
    If you don't practice listening skills you will understand the language only on paper.
    In this video you will listen to 12 dialogues. All the grammar that is used in these dialogues, I explained in the previous lessons, as well as 90% of the words used in the dialogues you should also know.
    You can check out Listening playlist for more: • Korean Listening Practice
    You will listen to each dialogue 4 times.
    1. Just audio without text
    Try not to panic, concentrate and just listen and understand what is being said.
    2. Audio + text
    Listen to audio and look at text in Korean.
    Look at the text and check if you understood the speech correctly when you listened to it for the first time.
    Also, if you are in doubt whether you have read or heard the audio correctly, you can check it in the Latin text on the right side.
    (I am not using the standard romanization rules because instead of making it easier to learn and understand Korean, they are rather confusing.)
    3. Audio + text in Korean + text in English
    Here you can check if you understood correctly what it is about.
    4. Audio without text
    Listen to the text again, don't look anywhere, concentrate. The audio speed is slightly faster here.
    It would be more efficient to review all the grammar and vocabulary from the previous lessons before listening to the video.
    If you liked this video, tell me in the comments, and I will try to make more such videos.
    Also, if there is something I can improve, I would be glad if you share your thoughts.
    Good luck! :)

    I have been trying to find Korean dialogue to practice listening and speaking, but it was hard to find videos that are not too difficult. But this one is perfect!
    My Korean is not great. I am still a beginner. But I was so happy to find that I could understand around 90% of this. This really encouraged me to keep going. Please continue to make more videos

    This is very smart , first audio didn't understand much then i realized once I read the written dialogue as I listen along to audio then the audio without dialogue is perfectly understandable. And I also realize as much as I thought I wasn't making progress in past 5 months I have actually acquired quite a lot of vocabulary . I'm saving this video and hope i find more like it .

    • @ray.a124
      @ray.a124 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jamica7245 as a beginner after learning hangul, i focused more on building my vocabulary and learning grammar basics and for those I used Ankidroid app and TTMIK website respectively, then I started to practice listening and reading and that's through some TH-cam channels like this one, after learning enough vocabulary and grammar I plan to start reading webtoon in Korean, "lingodeer" is also a great app for beginners, it teachs hangul in a simple way, and can take u from 0 to an intermediate level.. I find the best way to learn is to find a basic source for learning through which u can check your progress, in the same time look for many other sources to practice and support what you've learnt, and of course making a good structured plan, following a schedule and being consistent ..

    I was definitely discouraged because I noticed that I know the language better on paper (like your description mentioned), but have great difficulty recognizing the grammar & words I learn once they're spoken.
    This first video has been sooooo helpful & has given me SO much encouragement & comfort! Even if I didn't understand something at first, I knew enough to pick up context clues to understand! Then it would all come together!

Than you can switch to lingodeer for example:) and the second thing is, if you learn to read korean words with romanization you get to used to it and it will be hard to learn later the correct pronouncation:)

    I've taken 4 Korean classes at my college now so it's not surprising that I understood all of this (except a couple words that just weren't in my vocab yet). But that's all they offer, so I have to study on my own and this is the first time I've studied in like two months so I'm glad I still remember this much at least. On to the next video! I need to see what I still need to work on. I am going to study abroad so I have to really study and practice! This was a really helpful refresher and hopefully the next ones in this playlist will refresh more and be more challenging.

    According to the Korean Pronouncing Dictionary, many Korean words are pronounced in a way that deviates from the hangeul rules. Strangely enough, most textbooks and dictionaries for foreigners are lacking information about this. A positive exception is the Language PLUS, 6000 Korean words dictionary of Lee Jae-wook, that mentions consistently all irregularities, although here too notifications about vowel length and syllable stress are regrettably missing. These can only be found in Korean-for-Koreans dictionaries, as they do not fit smoothly into the cheerful proclamation to foreign students of the national Hangeul Gospel, with its Celebration Day on September 9th.
    Pronouncing irregularities in the following words with initial g- (ㄱ) are not covered by textbook hangeul rules (except sometimes 감다 [감따]):
    Hollym's Korean Conversation Dictionary for Foreigners, English-Korean (2010), contains hundreds of misleading pronunciation entries. That is because the official romanizations are printed between square brackets, so they look like pronouncing tools - which they are not. This way there exist two sorts of Korean: Korean as it is spoken by Koreans, besides a kind of a hangeul dialect, without stress or vowel length distinctions, and with oddly pronounced consonants, as it is taught to foreigners. Another feature of this is the verb ending -요, that foreigners are supposed to pronounce as [-요], whereas Koreans themselves pronounce this as [-여] - except of course at moments when they are teaching Korean to foreigners.
    This is because Koreans are very proud of their "scientific" hangeul alphabet. In Korea, as well as at universities where Korean is taught, in deference to King Sejong, foreigners' speech should serve spelling, while that obligation does not apply to Koreans. That's typical for Korea, I think. Try this for English, pronouncing all the words according to the International Phonetic Alphabet, in honor of Shakespeare! For foreigners who seriously try to learn to speak normal Korean this is quite an annoying situation, made even worse by Hollym's "conversation"(?!) dictionary. For dedicated language teachers all this must create a rather frustrating working environment.
    Happily enough though ... Google saves, by showing little respect to good old King Sejong. Foreign students can better check and correct their Korean pronunciation by entering words in Google Translate and using the pronunciation function. Then they hear the words being pronounced according to the phonetic notation as used by the KBS standard Korean Pronouncing Dictionary, 한국어 발음 사전. This is how civilized Koreans normally speak, as long as they are not teaching Korean to foreigners.

    • @user-qd2oc2tr7m
      @user-qd2oc2tr7m ปีที่แล้ว

      I didnt know this situation as Korean… yes sometimes foreigners pronounce 해요우 instead of 해여 😂

    • @derkboonstra5637
      @derkboonstra5637 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@user-qd2oc2tr7m Yes, that is the problem. As foreigners we learn to pronounce many Korean words wrongly, because the teachers apply hypercorrection, pronouncing the words according to what I call "patriotic hangeul ideology" (whereby an English or Dutch native speaker easily changes [-요] into [-요우]).
      Once I asked a Korean professor at Leiden University, Netherlands, why she pronounced [해요], in instead of [해여] like Koreans do. I suppose, when speaking Korean outside the classroom she normally pronounces [해여]. The professor bluntly denied. She claimed that, maybe there are five or six exceptions, but Koreans pronounce the words exactly according to the hangeul rules. How short-sighted that professor was, or rather pretended to be! She could easily check that in at least 500 common Korean words, notably all two-syllable nouns (not verbs) that contain ㄹㄷ ([ㄹㄸ]), ㄹㅅ([ㄹㅆ]) or ㄹㅈ([ㄹㅉ]), the pronunciation deviates from the hangeul rules - not even counting all the words ending in seong, like 가능성 [가능썽], as well as hundreds, if not thousands of compound nouns.
      It seems that professors of Korean, in Korea and abroad, are told by the Ministry of Education to teach Korean pronunciation exactly according to the hangeul rules - which in many cases actually means wrongly - because they have to respect the national ideology of hangeul being a "scientific spelling".
      Not only stress and vowel lengths markings are missing in Hollym's English-Korean dictionary, but even notifications for consonant reinforcement, that were present in earlier releases, have now been skipped. This way there is even less hope for the foreseeable future that Korean textbooks and video courses will meet modern standards. Writing "[cheoldo]" while pronouncing [cheolto], that makes no sense for a dictionary. Korean linguists need to learn from their Japanese colleagues.
