- I wanted to get in to the mountains and get up high to enjoy some landscape photography, so there was nothing for it, I jumped in the camper van, stayed over and set off early to hike in the dark. I hoped for a cloud inversion and I was not disappointed.

Mr. Heaton - in his little and nice spaceship. Exploring and seeking for unique scenes which where not seen before ... that's so nice. That's the story telling we like from you. All your tools and the comfort in your campervan. BBQing some salmon by the lake, listening to the raindrops on the roof - what can be even better than this! :) Great episode, great hike!
Amen to that!
I really liked how you blended your classic elements of being alone in nature and talking one-on-one about your mood and composition with the new elements of van life. Another fantastic episode in the photographic journey of Thomas Heaton. Thanks so much for taking us along!
So good to think of Thomas Heaton living his dream. I think you help the rest of us accept that we can do the same. Your marvelous eyes and soft communication are a sign of the good in the world. Thank you for this.
Heartland Light What a nice comment, thank you.
This is a classic Thomas Heaton video at its best! Both shots turned out great. The first is moody and mysterious, and the second is very open and airy. It just goes to show what you can capture if you put in the effort, and keep an open mind for the conditions all around you.
Cant beat getting up early and climbing up for a cloud inversion. Have summit camped a few times and woke up to a sea of clouds. It is an amazing thing to witness that I wish everyone could experience once in there lives.
I truly love your videos Tom, as a landscape photographer myself you are the only person who seems to understand it's not just about the photos, but about getting outside, in touch with nature, those early morning starts to make your way to enjoy a sunrise, to take in the beauty of it all, I could watch your videos all day, wrapped in a blanket, cup of tea/coffee and just relax. You have such a serenity about the way you edit and make your videos, it's so calming. You're an inspiration to me to get out there and just have a go at it. I'm not professional, I'm an amateur at best but to me it isn't about taking amazing imagery, it's just the fact of enjoying the craft. Keep up the amazing work!
I read once that a creation becomes true art when the emotions shared are likewise felt by the person receiving it. That last paragraph of this video was rather a poem to my ears, made me vibe to remind me that photograph is rather the excuse and the medium to let yourself drive into those amazing experiences waiting in the outdoors. Thank you Sir. I really appreciate what you are expressing here!
I'm a man of Christian faith. For me when I am out in the early hours. There is no greater feeling then when your on a solo photo excursion in the silence. I see God so clearly from my eyes. In the video I hear that same silence you get out in nature . I recently was at the Mesquite dunes in Death Valley. When the sun rose, when the sun, washed over the landscape. It was such an amazing experiance. I appreciate MR Heaton. His videos for me brings those moments to me, again and again. What a great talent to the photography community.
Admire the effort you put into every single video, its really stunning! We don’t notice the work that it is involved and plus that... you’re taking AMAZING photographs. Wow!
You have helped me feel a lot better when I go out hiking to get photographs and don't even get one. You're right. The experience/journey is just as important and just as much of a pleasure of being out adventuring.
The best part about starting a new week?
A new Thomas Heaton video to really fill me up with inspiration!
Another cracking video as always!
My sense is this camper van is your place of zen... and the modern day 'dark room'... a place to check out and create! Love it!
Classic Heaton video from a classic location. Loved it. Every trip out with the camera is effort well spent. I got up at 4:45am this morning to photograph dawn. The conditions didn't pan out as I hoped and I only took a couple of frames. However, as I stood on top of that hill in Dorset watching the day start I knew that how lucky I was watching the dawn of a new day. Sometimes the photograph is just a bonus.
the reason why I just love your videos is that there is just no doubt about it that you love photography, as you said in another video "living your dream".
thanks for all your effort Thomas, you're doing so well captureing your surroundings with B-roll and still manage to find time to photograph in the right moment and hike around mountains. I think at some time I would just be too exhausted to do any more vlogging, but you instead keep on nailing it. I can not thank you enough for all your videos, please never leave TH-cam, you're such an inspiration! :D
Your last comments of two photographs after the long hike, and you are right the experience that went with it is a life time event that would last for years to come. I agree that the experience a person builds is not to be overlooked as that is a lasting memory.
The blue hour... I’m never going to sleep again... love learning something new!
That cloud inversion shot gave me goosebumps. "Absolutely gorgeous".
The mountain top that image is just fantastic. I cant wait to see and capture a moment like that. The blue hour calming , all the tones just great. And showing you have to be able to improvise, plans don't always plan out. Great vlog
Stunning! Final sentiments eloquently say it all. I'm lucky to live less than an hour from that car-park. As you say "you need to be in it to win it!" I should heed your words!
I’m still going through all of your videos one by one, chronologically of course. :) It’s neat to see how your interests and priorities have shifted around and back. But I LOVE that you’re still true to your core value of “even if you don’t get an image, getting up and out is worth the experience.” Agree 100%.
I've followed your videos for years, Thomas, and have always given you "Likes". I'm happy that you have such an all-purpose photo van with the comforts of home, but I was more impressed back years ago when you carried your tent to the mountain tops and woke up with the cloud inversion all around you. Keep giving us the swell videos.
beautiful storytelling .. really a life video ... if you think about all the components in this ... story .... stills .... video .... music .... Mr. Heaton is a masterful storyteller/filmmaker ... this is how it's to be done ... thank you Thomas for sharing your adventures
So inspiring seeing you bubble of energy! You are a truly inspiration to us all, who like Photography. Those 2 images... just beautiful Thomas!!
Such a great video Thomas and such an effort and dedication you put into getting your beautiful photographs. I love the bit from the car because it really shows that photography is just as much about waiting and planning than it is about pressing the shutter. A big thank you from Denmark. All the best, Morten
Yes the blue hour can be just as dramatic as the golden hour very beautiful photographs love your work
A classic episode Thomas, with the update of the campervan now part of the experience. Loved the images and the drone footage as well.
Cooking Show ;-) Fish in an enclosed van... Brave. Long walk for one photo, but I agree, the experience. Beautiful scenery Tom.
Oh so simple mountain/hilltop through the clouds, well worth the hike.
Normally I don't comment on videos, but the voice over at the end hits the nail on the head! Most people now days don't like putting in work to get to places to get to see breathtaking views, and they question those that do. Keep up the good work!
Such an enjoyable video Thomas. Totally agree about just enjoying the experience. There’s definitely a wonderful feeling about waking up early and hiking in hopes of getting an image. I think the sun can really energize a person. Really enjoyed this. Thanks for sharing.
Watching Grand Tour while resting in his van before an awesome photography hike. Man, you live the life I want to live...
Your videos are so well put together Thomas. Such a pleasant experience watching your adventures. Thank you for letting us have a glimpse at how you create your art. Keep up the good work!
What a great way to take my mind of my master's thesis, before I start my "night shift". Thanks for taking me with you. I cannot wait to taste freedom again in a couple of weeks and venture out myself!
I love the first image you got! It's so simple and as you said the trees add to the area of interest :)
Great at 9:12 with the overlay of the map and the view of the lake. I can’t wait to see your first feature movie.
Fresno1199 Thanks. Glad you liked it 👍
Enjoying the music selections and the aesthetics of the videos in addition to your photos.
Lovely view, nice mood, 2 beautiful pictures worth more than 100 bad ones. For sure it was worth to get out, have a good hike and enjoy the snowy peaks and lakes views. Nice pics and nice video so indeed, the rewards were waiting ^^. Cheers Thomas
You should install a vent fan above that stove to take away the steam and prevent damage to the cabinets. If they're a press board of some sort they will suck up the moisture like a sponge.
Such beautiful scenery! There's simply nothing like that around where I live I'd have to drive for hundreds of miles to find it. Outstanding video!
Amazing!!!! Just absolutly amazing!!! Thomas your videos never fail me. Your images are just stunning.. Yet again thumbs up and a damn good job. Keep up the good work
The drone B-roll of you walking at 12:15ish was a lovely touch.
Both images are stunning.. but my favourite was the first one...just beautiful light.
Another awesome vlog, I agree with your comments about 'sometimes you just have to be there' but somehow you always (well nearly always) come away with a glorious image. Great stuff thank you.
Absolutely stunning!! Cit. Thomas Heaton 🔝👏❤
Another great video, thanks Thomas!
I couldn't agree more about the experience being more important than the photo. It's the reflection on what you see and feel that shows through and turns a snapshot into a great image.
I don't care if I spend a whole day shooting without a single image to show for it, the experience is why I shoot.
Hello Thomas, The extra level/detail sound that you now have is brilliant, it really adds to the atmosphere. Two exquisite shots today, the "is it worth it question"...I don't understand how anyone can contemplate asking that but then I also love being up early and roaming the hills, getting a good photo is a bonus so by my scoring system 2 bonus points to you!
While the peak image was stunning by its general conditions, that blue hour photo blew me away, what a stately mood. Great work as always
Classic TH in the lake district. Wonderful.
Sometimes keeping it simple as you have on that mountain top floating in the mist is all that is needed. It appears you exposed correctly to the right using the histogram, knowing in advance what you will do in post, very well done Tom...
Shooting over weather inversions is so cool, not to mention fun!
Back here in the states, in my small part of the world, I live 1840 feet above sea level and I have a valley below me that has this weather phenomenon take place 3 or 4 times a year. No two are ever exactly alike. Sometimes I get multiple islands ( hill tops ) floating on top of the clouds...
Bill Farr... :-)
When dark room's were the norm, they were calming and such a wonderful place to create. The camper seems like that, a dark room on wheels.
What a great comparison
These videos are my dark room
Love your philosophy that it’s not always about the image but the experience is important too. On a trip to Japan a few years ago I was obsessed with photographing EVERYTHING and saw most of Japan through my camera lens and probably missed out on some great experiences. So, on my last trip back to Japan I made a point of being more selective with what I photographed, put the camera down, enjoyed where I was and interacted with the locals more. I found that once I got home and went through my images they were much more personal and really meant something as I could recall the memory that went with them - some even made on the wall in my house! Really recommend Japan, particularly the Japan Alps. Cherry blossom season is good too!
Looks like we'd all better follow you for cloud inversions! Death Valley and now the Lake District. Another wonderfully atmospheric video and I so agree with you about just enjoying the whole experience in a place like that.
That looks so nice sitting in the van with the rain trickling down having a cuppa! You definitely have set yourself up very nicely with that van, that tap being able to move up like that is very handy too, attention to detail on that one.
Cloud inversion shot is 🔥
The Indie Projects Cheers. Hope you guys are feeling better.
What a place! I like so much hiking and taking (photohiking??? 😉) pictures and, of course, I cannot resist to take a shot every step so at the end of the day I got hundreds of pictures...every single details I love, every tree or a flower, how could you resist? Also in the winter when everything is covered by the snow or it is too “brown”, I love it, I love to stay in contact with nature probably!
Thank you!
There's nothing quite like a crisp refreshed sky after a rain. 👌
The cloud inversion is my favourite image I just love the simplicity of your images. Well done another great video.
You always make my day :)
I came back to Spain after 3 years living in The West Midlands. Every time I could, I took my 6D with all my lenses and visited Northumberland, Peak District, Wales, Cornwall... many places. However, my favourite was The Lake District!
I fully agree with you, even if you do not get a picture just to be there is a joy for the Soul.
Thanks for the videos!!
Absolutely stunning. Another brilliant video Tom and the words towards the end about how important the experience is sum up so beautifully your approach - love it!
Love the cloud inversion shot. Time very well spent! Best, Bob
Wow, wow, wow! first time I heard the term Blue Hour... epic video Thomas, one of your best!
I don't know what's more brave. Getting up super early to hike or cooking fish in the van. But hey, a photographer's gotta do what a photographer's gotta do!
Thank you, Tom. It's always such a pleasure to watch your videos. Great work!
Couple of bangers there. Beautiful. Another great video.
Another great journey with you on your adventures Tom, thanks for that and great images, breathtaking.
Great video Thomas. I woke up earlier than normal today, so rather than rushing off to my office job like I normally do, I was able to enjoy a nice breakfast while watching this video. I found it so relaxing and inspiring...a great way to start the week. So thank you for the work you put into your videos and I’m looking forward to the next one. - Chris
Cooking with Thomas! Camper van life seems a blast :) For me this was a extremely well done video. The build up, pay off and wrap up all worked seamlessly. Sprinkle two images on top and you got yourself a great one. Thanks for all the work mate!
What a great vlog Tom & what a superb adventure. So interesting & fascinating to watch . Everything about it - van life, hiking, filming & photography! Reality is truly living the dream :) Wonderful images, really love them both- blue hour is amazing & then your image of the mountain peak through the clouds is just pure heaven :) So looking forward to your talks at the Photography Show on Saturday & hoping to get the chance to say hello & shake your hand for all the joy you bring!
So good, i think ill watch it again...... and again.... and again.... i also enjoy the voice over alot!
Love hearing your perspective at the end so eloquently said. Thank you!!!
I do love having a morning coffee and watching your latest upload. Keep up the fantastic work!!
Both images are beautiful. This video is some of your best work. Not just because of the photographs, but also because of the journey. You “get it.”
One of your best episodes.
Loved this vlog know the area well you certainly did it justice. Keep up the good work. This is your best vlog for ages. You are back to your best.
The Grand Tour 😍 Great choice! I don’t know much about cars, but I love the show 🙂
Those shots of you going through the gate at the end were STUNNING.
WoW!!! Great looking dinner now I see why you got the camper van, no more dry food packs..
Gotta love 'The Grand Tour'. Cheers from Canada
Another perfect Heaton life video amazing. I am now more interested in how these videos are put together you make it like a movie so engaging and fun to watch a real pleasure I have so much to learn and remember on the day you get so much footage and audio in such a small amount of time hhmmm master class
Your video production is on point in this video! 👌 great image capture too! Loved the one on the summit! Looking forward to the presentation this weekend!
Wow... that was just lovely to watch! Love your selection of music and sounds too. It must be especially nice to watch for people who used to hike, but for whatever reason... no longer can. Someday, you must show us the process of you filming yourself... walking into the scene... walking out of the scene, and the technicalities of making the video content. Love your work!
Absolutely stunning
Ian Fox That's "stunnin."
Another wonderful video Thomas. I love watching your videos on a Sunday evening. They take me away from thinking about the trials and tribulations of what awaits me in work on Monday morning. Thank you. Jamie.
You always take me to a different world. Another amazing video! Oh, and your van looks cozy; you're living the life!
just stunning, beautiful image, great statement oh and that salmon looked good, now off to the fridge
I have that same Krueger Park mug!! Man Krueger Park is without a doubt the coolest place I have ever been to!! It is so incredible!!
Once again this is great.Thank you Thomas !
Two stunning photos! Both images are truly works of art. You have an exceptional talent. While I don't post often, I am an avid fan and always look forward to seeing your latest content and breathtaking photographs. I have learned a lot about landscape photography from you, and you continue to inspire me. Thank you.
This picture seems to be a dream, amazing !
Those drone shots are amazing. I loved your behind the scenes stuff. Makes me appreciate what you do so much more!
love me that food sliding action!
Finally! "Stunnin'" is back! Great trip Thomas.
Cheers
Always enjoy watching your vids Tom, great to see you back in the Lakes in this one.
Great video and good response to 'is it worth it?'. To me, a morning out chasing light at sunrise beats being a heck of a lot of other places!
Breathtakingly beautiful shots 😍 The aerial view was a pleasure to the eye❤
Wonderful video.
You really are living your dream. Congratulations. Looking forward to more.
Absolutely gorgeous video! Such a wonderful journey and beautiful images!!
Love, love, love this video. Very inspirational, thank you!
Totally living the dream!
Another fantastic video, thanks Thomas! Loving the new camper van, looks amazing!
