For those who don't understand how loud those snares really are. The bass drum keeps everyone on beat, and is basically the most important part of the band. The bass drum is LOUD. Bagpipes are also VERY LOUD. The bagpipes sound quiet in this video, and you can hardly hear the tenor or bass drums. The snares however are loud and clear. That's how loud the snares are.
In fairness, the mic I was using for this recording is highly directional, so the snares sound relatively louder than they are, but as a drummer myself, I can confirm they are a loud instrument. The bass drum in pipe bands is however more subtle than in most other marching bands. It's not quiet, but not such a "thud" as you would hear in disciplines where a hard mallet is used.
I don't think I've ever heard this Strathspey delivered more perfectly..and I doubt I ever will. Taking this group to this level of performance is the stuff of dreams and, seven years after the event, I'm still in awe!
Can anyone tell me what the leading drummers sash is symbolic of. Is it just to denote the leading drummer and if so, why isn't he wearing it in any competition recordings?
Those tenor drums certainly bring an amazing extra dimension. Both musically and visually
Bass drummer s not bad, either!
