it's been almost a year
i've been staring at this thumbnail bitterly for almost a year
because his banner came and went, and nothing
I couldn't pull Merlin, not me. not the budget player.
merlin wasn't FOR me. waver wasn't FOR me. i had to power through the story on the backs of Hans, Georgios, Asterios, and whatever 4-/5-star the gacha saw fit to grace me with
but now, almost a year later
despite my budget
with the one roll i allowed myself to splurge on
it all changed

Seriously, I field this comp every day and it never fails that one guy will random crit my DPS and there goes my strategy. Or one time I had the enemy triple crit Merlin. I stared at my phone in shock and rage. Turn fucking 3 and Merlin eats like 15k damage all at once. I wanted to throw up and quit.
@@Nekufan1000000 You could put a backup support merlin in the back as well as a backup attacker. Plus use Mash's taunt in case you're ever worried and do your best to spam her NP as well
@Nekufan1000000 The problem with using both Mash and Merlin together is that you need to get both of their NPs off quickly. Mash has bad NP gen outside of her taunt, and with only two Arts cards, it's impossible to Arts chain with a Buster deck DPS. To fix this, use Raiko or another class-advantaged Servant with at least two Arts cards and a Buster NP.

Burn is currently also stackable in NA. I know this because I have a level 100 Caster Cu.

Jokes aside, it's clear why this guy is so darn OP any time you use him. Invincibility, star gen, heals, buster buffs, etc. The guy has just about every buff imaginable. I'm half surprised they didn't make his buster buff work like a targetable projection. The nice thing is...there is no real need to pull for him for most people. Similar to Waver you will never struggle to find a Merlin support. There is a fair argument that in getting Merlin you can then get support attackers. But it's easy to find/pull competent attackers of any rarity than a purely broken support.
The good thing is that regardless of Merlin being broken the game can be beaten without him. It's a game that doesn't have any direct pvp so you aren't punished by not having him. It's just a clear bonus if you do.

Got Merlin. Got him to 90. Ran out of pages and only have him at 4/4/4. Put him in the back for Bond farming as soon as Barbatos went down. None of the other Demon God Pillars fights really need him anyway.

Gotta love how Merlin was released nearly 5 years ago now and he's still broken but people want him to get a buff. FGO players are built different.

A Double Merlin just sounds so dirty.
Asterios is my fave servant next to Merlin and Hans, so I can vouch for the amazingness that is Asterios+Merlin (and you can add a Waver if you want to be even more gross.)
The only real hard part is getting Asterios's NP Gauge filled to 100% on the first turn. From then on, you can spam it every turn to not only negate all Damage during the upcoming enemy's turn, but also deal good damage with Defense down debuff.
But that's not all, once Garden of Avalon has been set up, and you start getting stars galore, with the attack buff, Buster up, and CRT Up on Merlin, coupled with Asterios Attack Buff, Buster UP, and Crt Star Absorption (and if you've got a Waver in there, geez), not to mention the crippling Defense down on the enemy,
Asterios will deal roughly 150K on his Buster Cards should they crit. Asterios is a lovely boy and he deserves all the love and at least two other high rarity versions of himself.
If the Holy Grail was real I'd wish for the ability to grail my fluffy boi past level 100.

On a serious note, I agree with the sentiment of "roll for Merlin so you're not eternally chained to a friend Merlin". That being said, I kind of wish DW would make more events like Setsubun where you have to have a wide variety of Servants available.

Imagine if someone started telling people that years down the line Merlin would get a buff. They'd be called mad and yet, here we are.
Isn't Merlin the first Servant who WAS nerfed? In Babylonia, his NP gave an additional burst heal on use. But when he became summonable, that was removed.
It's a meager nerf in the grand scheme. Lowering Hero Creation's Buster Up to 30% and Crit damage to 60% would've been better from a balance standpoint.
Merlin still has Heal on his NP. His Np level in babylonia is high, so his heal is higher
@@hans9503 IIRC he had two heals in Babylonia, one when you use the NP, and a heal-per-turn. Now he only has the per-turn heal.

We need an interlude for Merlin
Your team 2 comp with Saberlot is missing one possibility: Rather than running double Merlin, Merlin and Tamamo play off of each other stupid well with this particular comp. Between Merlin's constant NP gen buffs from his NP, crit star boosts from said NP, Tamamo's arts buff and her CDR and NP charge from her NP, you can easily have Saberlot's crits come up just when you need it. Hell, if you're degenerate enough, it can almost come up on demand.
The only issue with that particular comp is that you don't make a whole lot of use out of Merlin's Hero Creation beyond the crit boost, thus I'd like to offer another possibility that may seem a bit insane, but stay with me on this one. Swap out Saberlot for Drake. Where the only possible problem with this particular comp may be that you're mixing cavalry classes, it's not nearly as big of a deal as it seems on the surface. See, Pioneer of the Stars may not *seem* like too big of a deal...until you have the capacity to use it damn near on demand. Combine that with your crit star gain from Merlin's NP and the burst stars from Drake's NP and you've got all crits all the time and I don't think I need to tell anyone how nasty those crits can be on things like an amped arts card from Tamamo's third skill.

I got Tamamo so I don't need Memerlin..... *Sweats*
I run mainly arts teams, but Merlin still makes himself useful alongside Tamamo. Strangely, the two have some insane synergy between each other. See, in both cases, you don't really want to hold onto their NPs for any real reason other than possibly an NP chain in the case of Tamamo. Merlin's only real weakness, if it can even be called that, is the fact that his party invul is a little long on the CD for perfect coverage. Tamamo fixes this with her CDR, but there's a sinister bit that isn't quite shown on paper at first glance.
See, Garden of Avalon and bushy tail's NP work wonders together. Both are NP charge NPs with Tamamo's coupling with a CDR. Merlin's healing helps with this case, but that's not why he's there in this team. He's there to make sure that your attacker (probably someone with a qaabb deck) has his damage buffs constantly. Thing is that, with these two supporting each other, you can spam their NP every other turn if you really want to without too much trouble. Garden of Avalon starts stacking, you get better NP charge for everyone AND better crit star gen. Tamamo's NP gets spammed, everyone gets burst charge and CDR. With these two working together, you could pick almost literally anyone to work in that third slot and they'll do fine. Servants like Saberlot, Surfer Mo and Drake get special mention, though. Saberlot for his NP spamming potential with those damned arts crits of his, Surfer Mo for a similar reason (read, Surfer Mo's NP loops), and Drake for burst stars to help with NP gen for everyone in general and to make better use out of Hero Creation. Special mention for this team to Prisma Cosmos on Merlin. Toss that shit on him and he'll passively gain 12% meter per turn with an NP that stacks additional meter per turn on a team that's built around NP spam and stupid crits.

Just put him with Tamamo, and any arts/buster dps, then spam the fricc out of the support nps, and use his invuln to block aoes. You can consistently block even 3 gauge nps, and heal the trivial damage the enemy will deal. This strategy helped me beat some of the harder battles.
I like this guide. Quick and straight to the point. Nothing excessive.

I managed to get him with one final desperation single (4 bucks) one hour before his banner disappeared, after spending a fair amount for nothing during and after the Solomon singularity. I plan on going virtually F2P this year (minus guarantees and Ereshkigal) so a huge reason I wanted him was because of his reputation as the most busted servant mechanically in the game, as he'd make my life much easier even if I get very little in the coming months. Initially, I didn't plan to roll much for him anyway since I put story and waifus first, but he was a pretty interesting character in Babylonia as well, so I figured why not, since even narratively he seemed somewhat worth it. Going off this video it definitely seems worth it, he's gonna be incredible. I finally managed to get Waver too on the guaranteed, so I am basically set for supports forever (though I still want Skadi more than anyone once she comes).
So you were pretty comprehensive in your analysis and mapping out the future use of Merlin in the video, but I do want to just clarify one thing: Does Garden of Avalon's star gen stack with itself? I know it stacks between two Merlins, but with just one, if I use his NP with an overcharge of 300% for 15 stars in 5 turns, and then manage to use it again with the same Merlin two turns later, is that 20 stars generated for three turns from just that one Merlin? The same query applies for the healing, I guess.

Berserker Nobunaga is my bae, but she also comes with two abilities that play well with Merlin in particular:
* Atsumori Beat is basically a weaker version of Garden of Babylon, but as a skill. Because what we need in life is more health, NP, and stars. The stars bit is important though, because it then ties into:
* Demon King on the Beach increases her star weight and adds Sure Hit. Sure hit is nice, but it's the star weight increase that's important. Combine this with her triple buster deck, attack bonus as a berserker, and type advantage against most things (See: Berserker), and she'll shred Most Things once Merlin slaps Hero Creation on her. Just. So much death.

Tbh Merlin is pretty amazing, but Waver and Gale are enough for me atm. I'd kinda prefer to try and get Musashi or MHXA over Merlin. Since I don't really need him as much. If I do get him though, I could give Waver his much deserved rest. Great video.

i actually got merlin by accident, i'd been going for gorgon and got the monthly summon tickets and didn't know that his banner was the first one to show up, and blew out all my luck before noticing
Mash, Merlin, waver is my go to stall team. Np spam, tonnes of soft defence, fantastic hard defense and with all the crit buffs, stars and charisma; it does more damage than you'd expect.
I did one roll on his banner just for fun to see what I'd get and lol and behold I got merlin in that single roll even though I didn't really want to get him...... oh well at least I got him now ^^; great video by the way ^^

Wasn't it servants like Kintoki that caused the break bar mechanic to be created? Pretty sure if you buff stacked him and he being a berserker (effective to everything in the game at that point) was the major force driving this design choice.
Maybe, but I one turn killed Dantes in the even rerun this week with a Lu Bu. His attack buff, all of Merlin's buffs, attack buff from Mystic Code, NP buster chain, NP 100%, 50% on both Busters, he did like 600k because of Merlin. I can't imagine what that would have been like if it had been my Beowulf, who hits harder than Bu on average, instead.
@@Nekufan1000000 there are plenty of buff servants before Merlin left his tower. Waver and Drake to name a couple. However you DID point out exactly why break bars exist, most of us are just one rounding bosses via roid raging a berserker or two, making "challenge" quests relatively easy.

Also, if you don't strictly need Stars, Prisma Cosmos can work pretty well. 13-15% NP charge for him off the bat is pretty neat.

I'm going be part of the meme degenerates with a Jalter/Raikou + Double Merlin + Weaver comp.
Im an animal. I use Arjuna alter, double merlin and waver in the back. I hit 311k damage on a single target with his np.
I, myself, have had Merlin Grailed since the month he was released on JP.
I quickly realized how utterly monstrous Merlin, Jalter, and Merlin and Merlin, Enkidu, and Gilgamesh were.
So I swiftly Grailed him, and I've spent something like 3000 hours with him in the field on JP.
Why so many? It's been five years, and I work from home, so I play FGO for about 5 hours a day at minimum.
Also, his rather playful and energetic attitude is just a blast, like...

I was a bit behind on the story so when he came out, I grinded all the way from American through Camelot and finally ended up getting him with a login summon ticket.
Now, I WASN'T going to roll for this guy, I had 800 quartz saved for Abby and 82 tickets but you convinced me. When the first ticket shone gold I was like "HELL YEAH", but it turn out to be a salter. 5 tickets later it shone again, but it was Lalter. And in the 8th ticket I got this boy.
While I'm obviously happy because He's powerful and I got buster servants (which I didn't before, because my whole account is an Arts meme, ask the gods why), I'm more happy to the fact that I now have a 5* caster and It didn't depleted my savings for my foreigner girls.
So yeah... it was a win-win situation.

I went all for Merlin to the point I'm out of funds and were I didn't purchase any SQ for the rest of that year and didn't get Merlin. It's not like that for my other servants that I rolled for.

So: I’ve been playing since launch, and have got the worst luck. I literally had gotten 1 5* throughout my entire time. And even that was from a guaranteed banner. Then, yesterday, on Christmas, I used 3 SQ and yelled “ITS A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE” and obtained the futamancer. I’m still kinda in denial. :3
Used 6 tickets from the Solomon Raids and got him on my last ticket. That makes it 3 SSRs this month. The other two isEnkidu and Quetz. RNGesus has been good to me.
Im fairly new and tried to pull Merlin with so little i collected. As suspected didnt pull him and got Beowulf and Rama instead(which is cool). Even better news is most my friends got him and i must say he's my auto pick on any content im doing right now. He makes my level 60 Heracles feel like level 100. Lol Kinda the same goes with Beowulf and Jekel(i like berserkers).

I'm starting to feel guilty. I got him on a recent rate up in NA. I make a habit of just throwing 30 quarts on every banner that comes up, if I have the quarts, and he fell into my lap. I rushed him to 100 and am now bringing him to max. That was before I got to camelot. That guy breaks the game.
