in very low amounts like in toothpaste, it is okay. but in products like drain cleaner where it is a 20%+ solution, it is dangerous. it can cause blindness if it touches the eyeball, it can cause necrosis and chemical burns when you drink it or if it touches your skin.
Don't forget to tell your plumber if you've used it when they come to unblock a drain. Nobody got time for piranha fluid under the sink or up in the air.
Thanks for the interesting video. Would that make sense to dissolve hair and produce plant fertilizer (provided KOH is used instead of NaOH to avoid sodicity in the soil, and the overall pH is finally neutral)? I havent found much info on that topic. Thanks again
I honestly wouldn't know. However there's a shorter route there. Hair is completely compostable and has a similar composition to bone meal. It counts as greens in the greens/browns balance.
I've got a basement room that has black mold and I've got a kilogram of Sodium Hydroxide powder left from when I was making soap (sealed air tight). Would I be able to kill the mold with a 10-20% solution? ? ?
Here I am studying ways to dispose of bodies for a book I'm writing, and I find out, sodium hydroxide, a chemical labs use to dissolve bodies is casually ised as a drain cleaner.
Is it really good for clearing off oil from pipes or sinks though? Although changing it into a huge chunk of soap helps dissolves it in water over time, you would literally need to keep your water running constantly for a long period of time since soap doesn't really dissolve by just sitting in stagnant water.
@@CosmoDad I get that about redoing the entire video. I don't know how youtube works so don't know if text overlay could be added at this point. Don't. Honestly. Nare and other depilatory creams are made with a mixture of sodium hydroxide and ammonium thioglycolate. It's fairly unique because it mostly dissolves only hair proteins. If slowing or even shutting down the follicle is your goal Laser is the way to go

I'm convinced sodium hydroxide is the main active ingredient in Head &Shoulders, the original version. The modern version doesn't seem nearly as effective. I recall getting a burning sensation if I left in on too long, but the dandruff what greatly reduced. A friend of mine mentioned they don't use it because it burns their scalp. A supermarket brought out their own version which was very effective but also gave that burning sensation. People must have complained because it disappeared a few months later. I'm tempted to buy some regular shampoo and add some in, though I wouldn't know how much. I bet it will work. I think the zinc just acts as a preventative/fungal growth inhibitor.

Sodium hydroxide is not in soap. It reacts with a fatty acid to create soap in a reaction called saponification
generally for soap making you want to have more fats than hydroxide, AKA overfatting, this way you're sure your soap won't have hydroxide left.
