  • This is my reaction to Homem na Estrada by Racionais MCs. Of course this Brazilian song from the 90s is familiar. Ex convicts are treated with the same neglect and disdain within the U.S.

At the end of the song, you can hear the news in the radio that says "Mulatto male appearing between twenty-five and thirty
Years is found dead on the M'Boi Mirim road without number
Everything indicates that it was a settlement of scores between rival gangs
According to the police, the victim had a "vast criminal record"

Heyyy BR English teacher here wanted to make some considerations about the translation you had access to, man, 'cause this is one of my favorites.
So, something very present in the spoken text and not in the written part are interjections, which are used a lot for rhyming in this song. Things like "sim", "então", "não" they make the flow go smooth but also convey emphasis which is sometimes absent from the text. There are also many small mistakes students commonly make, but it would be very difficult to just rewrite the whole thing and you're gonna have to live with most of them. Some passages, however, where you looked kinda confused and that I'd definitely rephrase differently are below:
6:53 - Balancing on a ravine, a badly-finished and dirty room / his only home, though, his property and refuge
7:05 - from above or from below, if it rains it will be deadly
7:19 - somebody found a girl, dead and raped / (her killer) must have been very angry / dude, so many hits! / she was unrecognizable, her face disfigured
7:42 - I want my son to not even remember this place / for him to have a safe life / I don't want him to grow up...
12:40 - with his head full, he goes out for a walk / does not believe what he sees, not like that / kids, cats and dogs competing nose by nose / for breakfast outside the open air market
13:11 - he was gunned down at close range at school / fueling bougie kids with coke
13:30 - a week later, crack cocaine arrived / rich people behind it, a corporate board
13:43 - their customers have money and buy well / they're at home, with somebody influent as a partner / bougie kids drugged up to their bones / to sell drugs over here? Great deal
16:26 - some robberies around rose up suspicions / so, they said it was the slum, as usual
16:50 - as if it were an incurable disease: a tattoo on his arm (DVC) and a robbery charge
    THAT IT. Peeeeeeeeeeace

Hey man, I’m Brazilian, white, and signed up your channel recently. Though I always knew the importance of Racionais MC’s, I had never stopped to listen to their music carefully (I don’t dislike hip hop, but it’s not the musical rhythm I use to listen to frequently - though I love other black music styles like samba, soul, blues, jazz, R&B). I discovered your channel cause I started recently to watch some videos of “gringos reacting” to Brazilian music, and I just got stuck here watching your videos and I’m just mesmerized listening to Racionais MC’s (and your comments). I’m telling this just to let you know that, thanks to you, now I, a Brazilian citizen, discovered why Racionais are so important and legendary. They’re really a phenomenon of talent and doubtfully deserve their place in Brazilian music Olympus - beside their social importance. Great job.
And don’t feel pressured to respond all the requests made by Brazilians, it’s your channel and you of course you do what you want, in your time. It’s just that we Brazilians feel praised when our culture is appreciated by foreigners and have this habit of demanding recognition of them.
So thanks for spreading our music and culture in US and the world (and even to Brazilians, like me) and congratulations for your música sensibility and your activist work for the cause of black people and culture, it’s really super important.
    Shout out to you! 🖤

I had to introduce my background so you know which side I've always been on.
For being born in a miserable place. Racionais was the soundtrack of the rascals of the time and it also matched our reality. In 1990 they had a weekend in the park, which told about what it was like at that time, as well as music a man on the road, there were 3 cores in macro mode Miserable lower class, middle class and upper class, the middle class was the one who dictated what it was relevant or not, and many wanted to be like them, but for being unique and with violence slamming the door. I start a movement to hate both rich and middle class. So much so that the bandits had an honor code of not stealing in the favela. And helping many who lived there with them, I didn't make an alliance with anyone, I knew that my family, however humble, was still more structured than many at the time.

Racionais, he was probably the first type of poor, but with the talent for reporting everyday life, his rhythm was sonorous and contagious, I remember that my father repressed us not to listen to these bandit songs. But my neighbors listened to it every single day, at that time there were no cell phones or video games at the most super Nintendo that only a few more fortunate ones had. Therefore, our childhood was well controlled, as the most famous games were flying a kite, playing ball or marbles. Badly we could play in the street because in my neighborhood banditry dominated, it was not difficult to have to run home, as there was intense exchange of fire.
As much as I don't know what being a bandit and having a short life, I know how the innocent people had to adapt to the oppression that violence generated at that time.
Disclame wanted to send you an email so the comments would not be open to the public.

This song hits different for me now. I lost my cousin last year to the police. He was an ex con. He was in jail a few times for petty crimes and being involved with the wrong people, he never even shot a gun or robbed anyone, but he got in debt with people from inside that would give him cigs and other things, so he had to do some slinging business outside when he got out to pay the debts, and he kept coming back to jail. Also the cops would demand my uncle to give em money every month in exchange for my cousin's safety on the inside.
Until one day he was released and my uncle finally took him to a small rural town where he got a job in a farm. For a whole year he was free of anything and working a honest job, but the cops tracked him down and tried to force him to snitch his old friends, but he didn't budge. And then one night they just kicked his door down and shot him cowardly to death. They searched his house and didn't find anything illegal. They tried to blame some things on him and their final statement was that he was killed by his old friends. He was only 26 and had 2 daughters.
Cops in Brazil are way more crooks than some actual gang members. In any poor area here if you ask people of any color they'd say they trust the police less than actual thugs, and rightfully so. Cops don't offer any safety to anyone in poor neighborhoods.

it would be cool to react to "charlie brown jr-o preço" alright it's rock, but Chorão always preached respect and passed on a cool message to young people, rap, rock and hiphop united, without discrimination, Brazil has a lot of history in the matter of music, a lot of diversity. Great content, it's good to see that all this cultural baggage is understood by the gringa.

    you should react to:
Facção Central - Eu não pedi pra nascer | I did not ask to be born | English lyrics
it is a very hard to hear song that talks about the brutality around the child abuse and exploration that happens in brazil.
its quite sad, but i think you would have a good take on that. it really fits the music genre aswell.
great job man, keep up the work!

Like most families in Brazil in the 80's, my parents came from the countryside and from a poor place and settled in a big city.
It wasn't difficult to go to school and deal with the bodies of bandits along the way.
At that time there were two types of poor.
    1. Miserables who come from zero and who had nothing but their own lives, therefore, followed the path of crime.
    2. People who also had nothing and weren't criminals, lived in search of the American dream, own house, family and a car. I was born into this environment.
My father is an orphan and was very hostile as a child, our upbringing was always very strict, but the values of honesty, dignity and intelligence were not neglected. We never had luxury or branded clothes but we didn't go hungry or cold either. He is my inspiration because he raised 4 children who were not corrupted by the system. However humble they are today, they are citizens and contribute to society.

Man, you give many brazilians a good perspective on reality, due the fact that inner critical analysis aren't too seriously taken among us. Some of my fellowcitizens bring up the "slumdog syndrome", in which people think foreigner realities are always better, and brazilians are lesser. I guess this deep, despite casual experience of learning is a remarkable asset your channel has and one of the main reasons why your audience turned so brazilian... (also, we're NOW in a very ugly shape politcal-wise).
