Amazing stuff! When I was growing up I loved St. Elsewhere and saw this new show that I loved called Homicide and eventually I saw Tom Fontana's name in both of the credits. Then I saw Homicide was based on a book and I read the book and eventually I saw David Simon's name as a writer in the credits for the show. Meanwhile I saw Fontana's name on Oz which I also loved. Then the only preview on HBO for The Wire I saw was a brief graphic showing a bunch of multi-colored wires. But thankfully I worked nights and programmed my VCR 5 minutes before and after the hour to make sure I didn't miss anything and so one Sunday I taped something (probably The Sopranos) and also caught the pilot episode of The Wire and the sad story of Snot Boogie. Then I saw a Baltimore cop car and noticed David Simon's name in the credits and I was off to the races. I could feel in my bones there was some real connective tissue between these shows I love, so thank you so much for sharing these stories!
