How Good is the DeWalt® DCV581H Cordless/Corded Vac?

  • Having a powerful yet portable cordless vac is handy! We like to keep our vehicles vacuumed without having to plug in a vacuum and fit it in our too-small garage. This was a logical choice since we have several of DeWalt’s 20V tools, chargers, and batteries. Was it a good choice?

We’ve had success with DeWalt® 20v cordless tools. We chose to add a cordless/corded compact wet-dry vacuum to the gear in our garage to assist in keeping our cars tidy. Since we have several chargers and batteries, we chose the DeWalt® DCV581H.
    The DCV581H is a 2-gallon (7.5 L) 20V cordless or 120V AC corded compact wet-dry vacuum with a washable/reusable HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filter. The unit includes a 5’ (1.5 m) by 1-¼” (32 mm) crush-resistant hose with an angled tip on the end.
Besides the onboard hose, the vacuum includes the power cord (it stows nicely around the base of the top handle), two attachments (a crevice tool and a “gulper”), and accessory storage, along with two attachments - a crevice tool and “Gulper.”
Removal of the vacuum top to allow emptying of the unit is very simple with 2 snap clasps. The bottom can be easily dumped or rinsed out. Access to the filter is easy two, and replacement filters are available and cost about $x.
When the filter is removed, the float valve is revealed. This stops the unit from running when the bin fills up with liquid.
The hose can be connected to the exhaust side so you can use it as a blower. This is handy, especially if you get a few 1-¼” (32 mm) accessories. You could inflate mattresses, rafts, kayaks, and the like, as well as clean out crevices. That’s a handy feature!
There were a couple of things that we weren’t crazy about, but not enough to think it was a poor choice. First, it is heavier than it looks like it would be. The tool is just over 9 Lbs (about 4 kg) without a battery. Second, it’s not balanced well. It is much heavier on the battery end. Third, according to the label, the vacuum is made in Vietnam. We wish more of these tools were made in the country where the company headquarters are located!
We will do a full review after we’ve used it for a year, but our initial impressions are very favorable. The product ships well and arrives in about a week. The unit is compact and intuitive. It works well.

At the time of filming, the unit was offered for $139, as a bare tool (without battery or charger).
DeWalt® doesn't make a designated accessory kit for this unit, but there are aftermarket offerings, such as this one:

Try this - DeWalt doesn't make a designated kit for that unit, but there are offerings like this one: www.amazon.com/5140128-68-Replacement-Assembly-Attachment-Compatible/dp/B0CKSRSD41/
