  • Here I go through some pros and cons of the Gree Flexx unit and explain why I do not like installing them. I do not think they are a bad system overall and if they worked through the two issues I go over here then I think that it would be an awesome system.

    So I do want to say I acknowledge that there is a chance, although in my estimation rather low, of user error on the subject of the leaking joint. For what it's worth we do TONS of mini splits of all sizes and I cannot recall the last time we had a leak on anything other than 1/4" pipe. These are known to be tricky to torque right but we still get them first time usually as well. The orientation of the service port is in my mind a major design flaw that they need to fix. If they brought it out about an inch then that would solve the whole problem. The issue I have is that if there are problems this obvious with equipment then I lose confidence in it. And if it does have issues down the road then how difficult are they going to be to solve. I do not want to install equipment that will need repairs in the near future.
    I do not intend on not using this system at all as there are certain applications where it is a very good fit.

      what's a better alternative, which has at least as many of the good features (efficiency, quiet, 4-5 tons, not too different price point)?

      @@ntm787 I prefer Bosch personally. This unit is better for applications where width is an issue though. Bosch 4-5 ton is 29 inches so not that big

    nice job!
    so far we never had a single leak but we use prefab flex copper connectors.
    some tips: you do want to install j-u trap on roof condensers installed above indoor units to prevent all the oil backflow into indoor coil where its going to stay forever.
    you do want to seal atleast with pest foam the hole where copper lines come in to the outdoor unit or HELLO birds, mice, geckos etc.

    I am trying to replace my AC unit upstairs 98% of the use case is for cooling in summers. My options are Lennox single stage Compressor or Gree Flexx heat pump. For winter, I turn on the heat on my second unit downstairs only which make it warm upstairs.faced with this dilemma. General concern is the can I bet against the longevity of Lennox compressor with Glee heat pump considering my usecase. The variable stage is tempting but is it going to make any difference in the cooling efficiency only when compared with Lennox? Both are rated SEER2 at 17.

    • @SurfBrosHVAC
      @SurfBrosHVAC  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Depending on climate there is no reason to not go with a heat pump. I have never had a client be upset after switching to an inverter system. They are super quiet and usually perform above the rated efficiency

      Thanks for the response. As I am planning to use this unit only for cooling, I was more concerned about long term reliability and durability of the Gree Flexx when compared with Lenox compressor which has a strong history. Weather is definitely moderate except for a couple of weeks of extreme heat. I have good warranty in both cases, but the Chinese brand and unknown durability is what is making me nervous.

      I worked for a company that installed Lennox,Gree, and Goodman. Same installers so you can imagine similar install practices were used while installing all brands. Only compressors I saw failing were Lennox ones. Take that how you will

      We used it for the first time and it did hold pressure with the flex copper line. It also made it easier to pull the service valve out due to not being rigid pipe. I still think it is a design flaw but this product made the install more bearable. Thanks for letting me know this product exists

      @@SurfBrosHVACGlad to hear that. Yeah, it's definitely a difficult design. The flex line kit adds to the cost but, seems worth it.

    Could it be that your torque wrench is off? If not how many pounds higher did you have to increase it?

    • @SurfBrosHVAC
      @SurfBrosHVAC  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We tried a second torque wrench and it was the same. We went by the higher end of Mitsubishi torque specs and it held fine. Don’t remember exactly what the value was

    • @SurfBrosHVAC
      @SurfBrosHVAC  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Actually I remember. The manual called for 70-75 N/m. We torqued it to 85 and it held. This is in range for Mitsubishi but I don’t remember the exact range for Mitsubishi

      I would say it's not a bad unit as far as bang for your buck, but there are systems I like more out there. I would get this over a single stage unit any day. If you have different estimates from contractors you could tell me what your options are and I'll tell you what I think

      @@SurfBrosHVAC I'm actually installing this unit myself . I'm a HVAC tech myself (Las Vegas ) but never installed these units before .I'm buying one out the door for $2325 . I've seen inverter unit going for as much as 5K so yes this a good option .The price per KW is expected to go up 10 percent this year .So anything to save on energy that not bullshit solar .So I'm only installing the condenser and leaving the existing gas furnace / air handler in place.From you're experience ? is this possible or do I need to install a matching air handler with ECM motor?

    • @SurfBrosHVAC
      @SurfBrosHVAC  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you have a square Carrier unit then I would consider Bosch. If you have a slimline Carrier unit I would definitely go with this unit. Neither of these units really have to be matched. Most of the times when we've done them it's been with soffit mount air handlers so they are unmatched and have always worked great.
      The Bosch units have a little more control via settings at the outdoor board. They are also easier to install. They are a little more expensive but not too much.
      If you have any other questions feel free to ask. We've installed ~5 of these units and ~10 Bosch units. Both are fine honestly.

    I aGREE. All the same unit. I did one per customer request. Put a healthy dose of nylog on the flare face, and on back of the flare. I too unbolted the service valves to put core removers on…stupid design. They need to lower those connections 2-3” and it would be worlds better. Quiet and efficient unit with great heating performance. It’s definitely not as good of an Air conditioner as a true communicating unit like some of its competitors in the humid Midwest. True communicating Variable speed units like the XV are far better at humidity control. That said out of the 24V control units this one is better than the Midea made Bosch in performance IMO.
