i don’t think benny and nina were together before. i think that conversation was about a breakup between benny and another girl (now ex-girlfriend) because she went away for college, which would then introduce doubt about whether benny and nina could manage to make an LDR work. that’s why nina says “who broke up with who?”
The moment Sonny is revealed to be undocumented hearts immediately makes me cry. Even just the little clip here. Often people the way people talk about undocumented people it seems like they forget these are human beings we're talking about. When you see Sonny's face you have to see the humanity in the situation.
IKR i was talking with this girl and we were talking abt immigration and refugees and she said “well i feel bad for them but ‘illegal’ immigrants ruin the economy! errr 😠😠” and i was like OkkKAYyy
Me too! My boyfriend and I went to see In The Heights together. He cried when abuela died. He thought I was heartless for not (I don't typically cry during movies). But when Sonnys background became clear, my heart wretched. My boyfriend didn't understand why it's such a powerful moment because he came from a Colorado suburb, but I grew up on the border and lots of my friends were undocumented. In one moment, I was unexpectedly facing the reality of so many of my friends and loved one. Shit hurt
Same, when his dad asked Usnavi why he paid him with cash I suspected something was up, like why make it a big deal he doesn't get pay in checks or something?
i HATE when people say Vanessa is the female lead. they took so much away from Nina to give to Vanessa in this movie, but the plot revolves around Nina in the whole musical
I agree they took a lot from Nina but I think the point was to try and make the movie more balanced than the musical. They upped Vanessa's story and Sunny's by a significant amount to show that different members of the community are chasing after different things. College, legalization, and even moving to a better neighborhood are common goals for minority groups and I think they tried to showcase that more than just the college dream
@@lisaemely1014 i agree Vanessa needed something more than she had in the musical, but what they did give her felt empty and didn’t being the same punch or sense of necessity as nina’s storyline did
@@nolynnoel1032 I think that's the point though? Vanessa's dream is more humble than the other's. She wants to move into a better neighborhood and work her dream job. Just because it doesn't hold the same emotional weight as Nina's doesn't make it any less important. It's a smaller dream (un sueñito) but it still matters as much as the others do
@@lisaemely1014 no no no, i like that she has a plan on what she wants and is acting towards it. it’s a great dream. by oomph i mean it just didn’t seem like... idk real enough? maybe it was the actress or the writing but i just didn’t believe it yn?
As someone who's never seen the original show on Broadway and didn't have an emotional background going into the movie, I loved it. However, I can understand how people who went into it wanting to see it just like on Broadway would be upset with the changes. As a stand alone movie, it's fantastic.
Broadway lover here. It's like my favourite show. I have to say they did much better than many other adaptations. I miss what was cut, but appreciate that most of the changes were just artistic liberties. Still a great show with the same general themes.
I know that Corey Hawkins and Leslie Grace would have nailed Sunrise. They have amazing chemistry. I wish they gave me more of Benny and Nina. I absolutely love their story in the musical.
Yeahhh, exactly. their love story so great that they made Vanessa and Usnavi's story uninteresting and pointless. and sad to say, Usnavi was the main character here, so the movie gave justice to his life and love story more. A solo benny and Nina film would be great!
and she played abuela in the revival that anthony did with vanessa hudgens playing vanessa!! She has played that role in every major production and reproduction of this musical- its amazing
They should've kept the racism from Kevin to Benny in the musical, in the film. As a black woman, I know firsthand that sometimes members of the Latin community are racist towards dark skinned people. It would've been more impactful. Colorism shows that the darker you are, the more you're seen as less than. I'm really curious as to why they changed this very important part of the plot.
ONE reason I can think of is the fact that Camila Rosario, Nina’s mother, is cut from the film so there is no one to confront Nina and Kevin about their respective issues in the musical. Any other reasons, I’m not sure.
@@RagamuffinBabyDoll yes, there seems to be overall less of a focus on Kevin, given there was no Camilla to balance him out. He's much more accepting and rational from the start.
@Kiss The Ring One of the reasona why In The Heights flopped was because of its colorism issue. There were no dark-skinned Afro-Latinx folks in the cast (unless you count the dancers shown practically to the back of the scenes) What everyone needs to understand is that the colorism issue hits all minority groups across the globe and board: Black, Asian, Indian, Latin, etc. The fairer your skin tone is, the more appealing and attractive you appear to others. The director John Chu keeps fucking up in this matter (a.k.a. Crazy Rich Asians and Jem). He says he promises to do better every time, but never does. Lin-Manual Miranda SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER. We can't keep blaming Hollywood for the colorism issue when the POC who are part of the creative process don't step up and tell Hollywood that the colorism they perpetuates will no longer be tolerated.
Fun Fact: In the book In The Heights: Finding Home, the screenwriter Quiara Alegria Hudes said that another reason they made Daniela and Carla a couple was because since Nina's mother was not a present character in the movie, they lost that relationship of a married couple, so they created a functional and happy married couple with Daniela and Carla. I love that they did that so so much. The movie was PHENOMENAL, even with the inevitable changes from the musical.
I love both versions, though honestly I love *most* of the movie & *all* of the stage show. My biggest issue was how diminished Abuela felt. The gut punch from Atencion is gone, replaced with the long walk of Pacencia y Fe (which, don't get me wrong, Olga does *brilliantly* and I agree she needs an Oscar for this role); Everything I Know is gone, and the biggest heartbreak for me is the mural and Usnavi's motivation change. I love Vanessa and the expansion of her role is great... until the end. In the play, Abuela is the main push for Usnavi to go back to the DR - he has no experience or memories from there, but she does, and they plan to go back together. Once she passes, Usnavi continues to follow that plan for her sake, in honor of her memory. But the mural of Abuela on the Bodega makes him realize that her family and his, their memories, their hearts, and their dreams, are all right where he is - in the Heights. He lets go of the past and someone else's dream, and gives her a much better memorial - doing what she would do, keeping the heart of the neighborhood beating and the wisdom from the past remembered.
Wow, this is a perfect explanation of what I've been thinking!! It was a great movie, but some of the soul was gone in this version for me because of that pull away from Abuela. What was Usnavi really leaving or staying for, deep down, without the connection to Abuela and found family?
@@viam14 So glad you like it! I was a little nervous to post it, thinking I might be the only one who felt this way. But yeah, it made so many moments feel... thinner? for me, or sometimes even selfish. Thanks for the response! 🥰
@@viam14 Abuela is the heart of In the Heights truly. The biggest storylines are Nina and Usnavi, both resolved by their connection to Abuela. By putting pacencia y fe so late in the show we only kinda bond with her *after* she is gone.
I always related strongly to Nina. I was the first of my cousins to go go college and was always considered the one who would “make it” in my family. But sometimes that pressure is just too much. I really related to her just having more on her plate than she could handle. Changing it to racism seemed heavy handed to me. Racism will certainly an obstacle for us but regular issues like pressure and fear is just as relevant to any of us.
I have a love/hate relationship with the changes. Some are really cool and interesting, like the use of Future Usnavi as a framing device for the story, which makes the bursting into song feel more realistic. Some, like the reason Nina left Stanford and the removal of her mother as a character make no sense to me. Also, the racism of Nina's father towards Benny and how that is resolved is something I would have liked to see the story address. I LOVED the extra plotline for Sonny.
@@onetallpheeeshthe movie is a complete piece of art as it stands. And it's a satisfying piece of art. I'm just pointing out things the staged version brought to the table that I felt the loss of. But both are clearly products of their times. I'm gonna stay salty about Nina's dead mom though. That wasn't necessary.
I think the reasons for why Nina left Stanford made a lot of sense. The issue of money along with the way she was treated there due to being latina caused a lot of stress to her.
I'm not sure if it's racism, I would say it's mostly xenophobic, correct me if I'm wrong but I think in the play the reason Kevin didn't want nina to be with Benny was because he wasn't latino, not because of his skin color
I saw a behind the scenes where they said they cut it cause you can see nina’s realising where she needs to be without the song and I was sat there like but the song isn’t just about Nina items about aubela
Exactly! I'm going to "Alabanza" for this quick argument. Althoughout "Alabanza" everybody is singing together beautifully the very VERY end of "Alabanza" you hear a single, alone, "Alabanza" from Usnavi. THAT "Alabanza" is supposed to symbolize that Usnavi is greiveing separately, on his own. And "Everything I Know" is the exact same situation but for Nina. "Everything I Know" is supposed to show that NINA is also grieving separately, on her own. "EIK" isn't just about Nina finding where she's supposed to be, it's mostly about how she's grieving over Abuela in her own way that nobody else is. That's one major reason of why "Everything I Know" shouldn't have been cut.
@@foxtatertot we can see how claudia affects the hood and the lives there in the movie, with a line here and there and her actions, those songs, while beautiful, slowed things down, when things needed to be speeded up. They had to expand Vanessa's role, we needed to know and like her. In the stage show, not so much.
Nina and Benny had a lot more of a strained relationship in the play because of their different races. Ninas father didn’t approve of him because he wasn’t Latino and Benny blamed Nina when her father decided to sell the business making him lose his job
I love both versions of Paciencia y Fe. The number in the movie was beautiful but for me the stage version hit harder. Abuela Claudia revealing she has the winning ticket during the song is perfect. Getting to hear/see life through her eyes and the obstacles she and her mother had to overcome and then out of nowhere is the big reveal. She then continues her day like normal. Everyone else on the block had all these fantasies and dreams they wanted to chase but abuela literally just goes about her day. Then you’re left crying happy and sad tears because of the rollercoaster ride you just got off of. There’s also something about finding out she won the lottery before all the other characters that makes it brilliant too.
@@cryspbacon actually there's a Broadway kids program that made In The Heights and the kid I saw playing Nina was wonderful too, I don't remember her name though
Right?! I was obsessed w Bennys voice, but honestly kinda disappointed as soon as I heard both Vanessa and Nina sing, like they’re good, but I still prefer the og
I will never forgive them for cutting 70% of Benny and Ninas story, not to mention killing off Ninas mom. I mean I understand why but man it was pretty disappointing.
It really gutted some major plot points when they removed those details. I’m amazed and baffled at a lot of the creative decisions, because it just makes me realize how much better the stage show is
@@JustinZarian Seriously, why change the plot so drastically? It didn't really add anything to me and in most cases it took away by changing the order of the songs. I loved the pacencia y fe sequence but getting to know Abuela after she is gone changes the impact she has. Also cutting Everything I Know. I think the original order of music is just a more compelling story, a more heartbreaking story.
I was ok with nina’s mom not being present actually. It kinda put more emphasis on abuela’s maternal relationship to Nina. This would’ve been more strongly emphasized in everything I know, but unfortunately it got cut
I really missed the song inútil, sang by Kevin in the stage play. I thought it added a lot of weight and depth to his character and why it was so hard for him that Nina dropped out. He felt useless like his father did before him. It makes his relationship with Nina that much sweeter in the end, when she decides to go back. But I LOVE both adaptations! ❤️
I feel like revealing abuela Claudia won the lottery was more emotional than after she died because she decided what to do with the money they discussed it and Usnavi Sonny and Abuela had plans that they're dreams were literally about to come true but they all just vanished just like that because she died. It would've been heartbreaking if that happened in real life. I feel like the movie version with revealing it after and cutting Hundreds of stories just lessens abuelas character.
As a person who has only ever seen the movie, the reveal felt like Abuela knew exactly what she was doing all along and made sure Usnavi would get the ticket in order to fulfill his dream. She was still helping him from beyond the grave while showing how selfless she was. This is even more emotional after her death scene in Paciencia y Fe, in which we see how much she has struggled throughout her life and how she would've had every reason to enjoy this amount of money for herself.
gooood, that was the one i missed sooooo bad. idk, the feeling of this, kinda, other mathriarc in the community? like the community after abuela still had women taking charge. also it felt like a really iconic latino thing, mami taking the reigns of a fucking clusterfuck with a simple "Enough! I AM talking now, not you." and mediating in this caring but stern way. when listening to the movie soundtrack i always at some point go to the original just to listen to "enough" a couple times before moving on jsjfj
My main complaint is the way they changed blackout. It was supposed to be about Benny and Nina’s climax, Sonny and Pete protecting the bodega, the closely knit harmonies. They kept some of the things I liked but I didn’t like the replacement of Benny and Nina with Usnavi and Vanessa
Benny and Nina/ the relationship between Benny and Nina's father was also a factor that was different in the film versus the stage play. Like in blackout, Nina and Benny are fighting due to her father closing the shop so she can have enough money for school. They getting this huge fight which was revamped in the film as Vanessa's and Usnavi fight. I thought I was going to feel some type of way about it but to be honest I love the new lyrics in Black out ❤️
I still don't really understand why Vanessa and Usnavi acted like they did on their date. Why does she almost immediately go off and dance with other guys? Why does he immediately decide to flirt with someone else? Is she showing she's afraid of commitment, because she knows she really does love Usnavi?
@@mstie3252 OMG yes. I was confused myself. Even watching both the stage play and the film I was always confused it was like well what was the problem. Like she said that he left her in the middle of the blackout but it was a crowd so you could have easily got lost. And yeah she was dancing with almost every guy and they barely even dance with each other. What I wasnt convinced both actually wanted that date 😭😂
@@mstie3252 It was a lack of communication and acting on their true feelings. Vanessa initially only wanted to dance with him on their date, so when he said it was fine for her to dance with the guys inviting her (because he was trying hard to play it cool), and when he kept going to try to get them drinks instead of actually dancing with her (because of Usnavi being too nervous for it- precisely because of how much he liked her), it made her feel like he didn’t want her the way he actually did. Hence the line “she’s trying to make you jealous.” Usnavi does get jealous and tries to get Vanessa jealous by dancing with another woman. These roundabout games came about because their genuine feelings weren’t being relayed to each other. At least, that’s how I read it.
true but i don't think Jimmy Smits could have handled it vocally and carried a solo performance, he said he worked so hard on perfecting one line in the opening number and the choreo bc it's not natural to him
SOMEONE FINALLY SAID IT!!! Honestly that was probably my favorite song from the musical, which is a little silly but I just love it, and I was so sad that it was cut!! Same with Enough
Anything remotely negative was cut. I think some should have stated specifically the bar fight at leas to have blackout make more sense. The vandals in blackout were missing. Kevin and Benny's relationship also. Blackout was one of my favorite songs originally but they modified it too much imo but I understand why.
I saw this gorgeous film a couple days ago. There were about fifteen of us in the movie theatre screen all dotted around. My heart broke for Sonny and I sobbed It hurt worse because he's a child. There was nothing he could do
cuca was a very unnecessary character. she literally added nothing. she was just there just to be there. most of the time she was just being a third wheel to daniela and carla. and she barely had any lines
I think her character was added as a tribute. Cuca was the nickname of the actress Doreen Montalvo who was the bolero singer in the original In The Heights musical and was supposed to reprise her role in the movie, but she passed away in 2020. She was beloved by a lot of the cast and was an iconic Broadway star.
In a sense some of the changes actually made the movie a bit better like the lottery ticket reveal and Abuela Claudia death happening during the blackout made it feel more emotional
I like how in the musical, the only reason he can leave is because abuela won the lottery. It gives the money more significance and makes the choice harder. Still a great movie regardless.
That's really too bad they didn't keep Nina's storyline, about her juggling multiple classes and it becoming too overwhelming, and then losing her scholarship. It would've made a larger, emotional impact. Sure, the racism idea is common among university because we have to "work harder" to get the appreciation, recognition and respect that we deserve, but to be honest, this film was already dealing with the storyline of the DREAMers and immigration. The film piled too many social justice points in here where it almost felt forced. The stage production was quite subtle in the way the Latino community was portrayed and pushing racism down our throats didn't help. Yes, it happens, unfortunately, I've experienced it, but Nina's original reason why she left university would've shown a different perspective. We already have enough films and TV shows dealing and discussing race. This movie didn't need to become one too.
I just don't think someone would leave college due to racism unless it was really really bad. Minorities deal with soo much bullshit all the time, and I won't act like every school I've been to hasn't been racist in one way or another, but that's not a reason to leave. It seemed whiney compared to her original character who really resonated with a first gen american like me. There is so much sacrifice and all the pressure in the world to succeed because everyone's hopes and dreams are on your shoulders. "I couldn't hack it and I couldn't succeed like I thought I would" is so different from "I know you want me to succeed but people don't treat me well there." Seriously? Your parents took so much racism and classism and all types of crap to get you where you are and you can't even handle a year of it?
I have to say as someone who got in top university for law school and had to deal with classism, micro aggressions and felt alienated to the point i had to leave, I related so much to Nina. It's overwhelming and it's such an important story, most poor talented kids like me who get into top colleges just don't have the support their classmates have, and it's a real issue ppl don't want to address still...
Okay I’m gonna be honest. I loved the movie so much. I cried a good 4 times. I do wish sunrise was in the movie, but I still loved it so much. I was mostly glad Vanessa was expanded in the movie, I felt like I could relate to the song “It won’t be long now” because I want to go places when I finish school and chase my dreams, but there are things stopping it. But overall, really good movie, amazing songs, amazing choreography, amazing acting. If you’re going to disagree PLEASE be respectful.
Overall, I liked the changes. New Sonny`s plotline (my poor boy, I teared up when he said he can`t go to college!) was great, Vanessa`s dream about being the designer gave her more depth, revealing about the ticket made me cry for the secong time. I was happy to see new Blackout. I love the drama happening between Nina and Benny in the original musical, but let`s be honest: Benny was unpleasantly rude to her. So I`m glad he is a very decent guy in this version. I also liked how they changed Kevin`s attitude, tho original version again has more drama, which is also interesting and good. Only thing I DO really miss is Camila`s character, especially when they added two new characters. Okay, the scene with Sonny`s father was great, one little conversation hit SO hard. But Cuca... Why she`s even there? They may give that little screen time to Camila and even that would make more sense, imo.
They simply could not include everything from the stage musical. I felt they really had to use the advantages that the new medium (film) offered. Dramatic elements had to be heightened. Social issues of interest had to be given more focus. More time and character development had to be given to ones that were closest to the main protagonist. I was bummed out about the missing elements too but I get it, and I enjoyed the film tremendously.
They actually could’ve, the movie is longer than the play. None of the changes really had anything to do with the medium of film besides the visuals of certain songs like Benny and Nina on the side of the building
The changes were alright (of course I missed the original) but the line "I heard what you did for me" was so weak, because all Usnavi did was get Carla to sign off on the lease.
The film is good on its own to a person who’s never seen the musical, but as a person who loved the musical and saw it live this film just is okay. Putting Marc Anthony in there was a complete waste of time, they could’ve given us one song instead of that scene that was completely unnecessary.
honestly, gotta admit that in the first shot, the one in which they (carla and dani) wake up in bed together and carla gives her a cheek kiss, i thought that it was a moment of "its common in less favored families that siblings sleep on the same bed cause there is no fucking space, even when they are grown". picked it up pretty quickly tho, as a lesbian watching it with my ex gf, we just side eyed each other and whispered "...gay" a whole lot until we realized it was text, not just subtext. but yeah, one of my close friends in highschool shared a bed with her sister, and the room with her sister and momma. another friend's place had a room in which all the women slept. her, her two cousins, her mom, and aunt. her brother slept in the same room as her grandparents. and we were all around 17-18 at that point, with 20-21 year old siblings. so i thought that at first fjsfj
@@ulkaalcachofajorquera5756 Same here! That's exactly what I thought in the beginning, I think that just because of how visually, they appeared to have an age gap that's what made me conclude that they were mother and daughter but now ik that's not the case lol
so many of the changes to the movie really infuriated me. i wish they hadn't changed the lyrics of blackout. it feels so choppy and out of place the way that they did it, as much as i liked benny not blaming nina for what kevin did

It's been updated. I love the lyric changes especially in 96,000. the singing is great. I do wish it was closer to the stage musical at times. Abuela's death crushed me in the film. In the musical, you don't see her death. Both are heartbreaking.
I thought they were just close friends. I didn't even pick up on anything romantic. 😂 When she kissed her cheek I thought it was in a caring way like you'd kiss your mother.
More of Vanessa was really good, and I agree strongly with #6. Taking advantage of the cinematic platform was such a key thing. But #3 was a really bad change. The original is what happens to so many students it was much more relatable, imo. The difference in the film could have worked if it was something more serious, but the story she tells is like, really? Welcome to having roommates.
In my opinion I think it's a pretty good reason since in a way it's meant to tell the audience that she feels very uncomfortable for being judged for her appearance
@@richardperaza5083 yeah. And we can infer it wasn't JUST that. She stuck around for a semester. Sure, one xenophobic/racist incident might be able to be looked past, but feeling that every single day? That's hard. And it makes sense why she wants to go back to her comfort. Additionally, we know that it is economically strained still, that doesn't change.
@@beatm6948 It's hard but it's also standard? Graffiti Pete's line from 96,000 was changed from "I got more hoes than a phone book in Tokyo!" to "I got more flows than Obi-Wan Kenobio". It's very corny, but significantly better than the original line, which managed to be both sexually & racially offensive.
it’s a joke that few people get. it’s supposed to be blatantly racist and also incorrect. lmm knows that “ho” is not a japanese name. it’s supposed to show that graffiti pete can’t rap. they’re making fun of his attempt to rap.
Sunrise, Hundreds of Stories, and Everything I Know deserved SO MUCH MORE, they were some of my favorite songs from the original. I love the movie so much but I don't care if it had to be 3 hours to fit all of the songs, gimme gimme
The change of placing for pasencia y fe changed how i felt about that song, i always akipped it but now i feel like i need to, its also my grandmas story and my grandpas and so many others
I kinda wish they kept the reason why Nina quit school. I think there were great moments to show the racism and it’s complexities the latino community experiences. That being said, I get it. Those experiences are real and aren’t unrealistic.
I’m so glad they made Daniela and Carla a couple. I think it’s a amazing step in the right direction and to have lgbtq+ representation in such a big movie is amazing to see
FYI - Sunrise IS in the movie version, but it’s merged as an instrumental in the Nina/Benny dance scene on the fire escape! Lin-Manuel talked about it in a few interviews. 😉
i think cutting out Nina’s mom was absolutely unnecessary. they had to change so much just so that they could change it to “she died” when one of my favorite things in the musical is that relationship between Mr. and Mrs. Rosario which then leads to the amazing “Enough”
exactly!! that was also a huge part of nina and benny's relationship, and that was a real and authentic part of the musical that i'm really sad they took out
@Kiss The Ring lol how about you stfu. Your two cents is completely irrelevant here. In the stage version of ITH, Kevin not approving of Benny is a huge part of the storyline. It adds so much to the story, to those two characters and even to the character of Nina.
I still can't decide if I like Nina's new reasons for dropping out honestly. Like that kind of isolation and the effects on mental health through a particular traumatic experience (being searched) are fully valid but I also kind of liked that Nina's reasoning was more socioeconomic originally. People are cruel and that's harder to change but I feel like the original shines a light on a genuine problem we could be trying to fix.
I really felt like the movie did the musical a disservice with most of these changes. They removed stuff that took out the heart and bite of the musical to make it more corny and saccharine. A lot of the stuff they added was purely cosmetic or lateral changes rather than adding anything of substance. And honestly, while I normally like the actors, they don’t have the charisma range of the original cast and having Lin Manuel steal the show in his minor role only underlined that point. Which is weird because Anthony Ramos was Sonny in the original production but I feel like he was better suited for that than as Usnavi, while the kid playing Sonny was very amateurish. Really bummed that I didn’t care for the movie more than I did, because I love the stage play.

1:42 I’m not sure if the “dorky” 96,000 tweak referenced in LMM’s tweet is the “Tiger Woods” change, which I believe had become canon even before the movie came out. Seems more likely that this tweet is referring to the “more flows than Obi-Wan Kenobi-yo” lyric change.

Agreed!!
I liked them more than the main couple 🤣
Yeahhh, exactly. their love story so great that they made Vanessa and Usnavi's story uninteresting and pointless. and sad to say, Usnavi was the main character here, so the movie gave justice to his life and love story more. A solo benny and Nina film would be great!

It was lack luster, I totally didn't feel the panic and Benny going for the dispatch instead of getting with Nina was a weird choice
@@nigerianprincess101 yessss! That was so weird! Didn’t make any sense leaving Nina alone
It would have been a 3 hour movie if they kept a lot of the stuff in unfortunately 😫😫 I get why they cut stuff but ugh I agree.
@Kiss The Ring One of the reasona why In The Heights flopped was because of its colorism issue. There were no dark-skinned Afro-Latinx folks in the cast (unless you count the dancers shown practically to the back of the scenes)
What everyone needs to understand is that the colorism issue hits all minority groups across the globe and board: Black, Asian, Indian, Latin, etc.
@@DeniseFaraday Thank you! 👏🏿👏🏿
Abuela doesn't have memories of DR either. She's Cuban in the play too.
@@jlmurph2 Thank you! You're absolutely right, that was a space-out on my part, thanks for setting me straight!
@@viam14 Abuela is the heart of In the Heights truly. The biggest storylines are Nina and Usnavi, both resolved by their connection to Abuela. By putting pacencia y fe so late in the show we only kinda bond with her *after* she is gone.

She was alright. There was enough of her
I always related strongly to Nina.
Agree with ALL of this!
It would have been over 3 hours long if they kept everything
Ok but why on earth would you remove "Everything I know", it was crucial in showing abuela's relationship with nina and rest of the block.
I saw a behind the scenes where they said they cut it cause you can see nina’s realising where she needs to be without the song and I was sat there like but the song isn’t just about Nina items about aubela
That’s Exactly what I said!!
I actually like that they took it out. Alabanza had me in tearsssss. If everything I know was kept in I think it would have been overkill
I preffer the new Benny tho, he was always there for Nina. Blaming Nina was something I never really liked about the Chris Benny.

@@the-ma-an literally what I was thinking, when the sun goes down doesn’t make a lot of sense without sunrise in my eyes
Also, I'm used to Nina having a powerhouse voice (though Leslie has a sweet voice and is also really talented).

ikr! Enough was such a good song and Camila balanced out Nina and Kevin so well. I guess it would've been hard to replace Priscilla Lopez

Exactly
They cut off the vandalism part because "NOOO we can't show any Latino as a bad person"
As a person who didn't have the opportunity to watch the musical i really appreciate this 😍
Benny and Nina/ the relationship between Benny and Nina's father was also a factor that was different in the film versus the stage play.
They made Vanessa seem so stuck up in the movie. Still loved it because In the Heights is my fave musical!
I've never seen the musical, so what makes you think so?
Still mad that they cut Inútil, it would've had to much more impact in the movie now that Kevin was a single parent!
true but i don't think Jimmy Smits could have handled it vocally and carried a solo performance, he said he worked so hard on perfecting one line in the opening number and the choreo bc it's not natural to him
SOMEONE FINALLY SAID IT!!!
Don't forget that they cut Usnavi and Pete's original relationship.

She's a perfect example of being given nothing to work with and doing a lot. She was very charismatic.
I agree with you: she was an unnecessary character.
She looked Great
I noticed all these differences and was honestly surprised and confused. I don't think the changes were necessary, but it didn't bother me much.
I think it was partially because of time constraints.
In a sense some of the changes actually made the movie a bit better like the lottery ticket reveal and Abuela Claudia death happening during the blackout made it feel more emotional
@@richardperaza5083 I couldn’t agree more with you.
The line “Manny Ramirez is in town this weekend” is switched to “Big Papi is in town this weekend” in Benny’s Dispatch
I like how in the musical, the only reason he can leave is because abuela won the lottery. It gives the money more significance and makes the choice harder. Still a great movie regardless.
I didn’t even notice the relationship between Carla and Daniela but I love it
That's really too bad they didn't keep Nina's storyline, about her juggling multiple classes and it becoming too overwhelming, and then losing her scholarship.
I didn't notice Sonny was undocumented till the end of the movie or that Carla & Daneila were a couple in the movie till she mentioned it.

Whaaaat? I love Cuca!
This is a really great take!!
Thank you!! I wish more people had this perspective
They actually could’ve, the movie is longer than the play. None of the changes really had anything to do with the medium of film besides the visuals of certain songs like Benny and Nina on the side of the building
The changes were alright (of course I missed the original) but the line "I heard what you did for me" was so weak, because all Usnavi did was get Carla to sign off on the lease.

honestly, gotta admit that in the first shot, the one in which they (carla and dani) wake up in bed together and carla gives her a cheek kiss, i thought that it was a moment of "its common in less favored families that siblings sleep on the same bed cause there is no fucking space, even when they are grown". picked it up pretty quickly tho, as a lesbian watching it with my ex gf, we just side eyed each other and whispered "...gay" a whole lot until we realized it was text, not just subtext.
but yeah, one of my close friends in highschool shared a bed with her sister, and the room with her sister and momma. another friend's place had a room in which all the women slept. her, her two cousins, her mom, and aunt. her brother slept in the same room as her grandparents. and we were all around 17-18 at that point, with 20-21 year old siblings. so i thought that at first fjsfj

At least part of congratulations is in The Reynolds Pamphlet. Sunrise just gets some notes played in a scene with Usnavi and the lawyer.
Sunrise, Hundreds of Stories, and Everything I Know deserved SO MUCH MORE, they were some of my favorite songs from the original. I love the movie so much but I don't care if it had to be 3 hours to fit all of the songs, gimme gimme
The movie is actually longer than the musical. If they literally just followed the play exactly it would’ve been shorter
The change of placing for pasencia y fe changed how i felt about that song, i always akipped it but now i feel like i need to, its also my grandmas story and my grandpas and so many others
Damn, it kind of gives you an idea on what could happen with a "Hamilton" adaptation
It really bothers me that they fit in prigua and and the reprise but cut everything I know.
they planned to cut prigua but lin was strongly against it and said hed play the guy if they kept the song, and repise was kept for the credits
I definitely adore those songs but I wished they kept “Everything I Know” more so than piragua 😭
i think cutting out Nina’s mom was absolutely unnecessary. they had to change so much just so that they could change it to “she died” when one of my favorite things in the musical is that relationship between Mr. and Mrs. Rosario which then leads to the amazing “Enough”
Enough is my favorite song in the whole musical. Fuck me I guess
Honestly nothing beats the classic but the new one just as good, I personally just like musicals better than movies
Yes more In the heights content love it 😍
So you’re just gonna ignore that they cut out the racism from Kevin to Benny and the fact that kevin didn’t approve of Benny In the play lol
Exactly! 👏🏿👏🏿
Fr!
@Kiss The Ring you just gonna comment this on every comment bringing up racism in the Latino community
exactly!! that was also a huge part of nina and benny's relationship, and that was a real and authentic part of the musical that i'm really sad they took out
@Kiss The Ring lol how about you stfu. Your two cents is completely irrelevant here. In the stage version of ITH, Kevin not approving of Benny is a huge part of the storyline. It adds so much to the story, to those two characters and even to the character of Nina.
And the blackout thing where it goes “don’t make me laugh I’ve been trying all night” Benny says that but in the movie it was usnavi
Sunrise deserves justice 😭
Y’all better get over the complaining and anger. This movie is fantastic! Lin improved on the musical and made things current.
Where did you get “…15 years since the show first opened”? ITH premiered on Broadway in 2008, which was 13 years ago.
13:25
the first show of in the highest was shown at eugene o'neill theater center on july 23 2005
math hard
@@jimbo9208 if you’re counting off-Broadway, then yes, 15 years.
@@skewdtchr85 and that what they did
Actually first showing ever was in 2000 when Lin was actually in school and his school put it on
I didn't even notice they were a couple. Thats cool though
Where can i see the musical with the original cast
This brilliant film should at least be nominated for Oscars
I don’t think I can watch it without sunrise in it…
I felt the same way but it is worth it
@@kak5268 yeah I wasn’t a fan of it sadly they changed a lot and it wasn’t as entertaining since political messages where all over it I wanna watch stuff just for entertainment not for politics
You missed: In the musical, it felt like Benny and Nina were the main couple. In the movie, it felt like Usnavi and Vanessa were. (I love both btw)
Sonny and Benny definitely stole the show
Either In the heights, 96000 or tell me something i dont know should get oscar nomination
If I am being honest , the reason why Nina leaves stanford is better in the stage version , at least in my opinion because the movie version felt a like a little too much …. Not saying it doesn’t happen because it does we get stupid comments from people all the time but idk I guess I just relate to the stage version Nina more ….
Wait. Is that Corbin Bleu on Broadway? at timestamp 11:37?
yes
I’ve seen both the stage show when it was in the U.K. and the movie and honestly I live both for separate reasons, the movie is good and they were always going to have to change things for the movie to work
when they changed abuela's story during pacienca y fe for the cinematic effect, i couldnt stop crying. it wasnt a bad touch at all i was just so sad that abuela had to go T^T the only other sad thing due to this change was not getting to hear Hundreds of Stories.. i LOVE that song so much
idky i was screaming when sonny was rapping 🤩🤩🤩.
I love them both. This movie is AMAZING! 😍😍😍
i’m so salty about blackout that’s the best part of the whole things is everyone singing over each other and looking for each other
Quiara Alegria Hudges is the one who did that changes from her original stage book along with LMM
1:42 I’m not sure if the “dorky” 96,000 tweak referenced in LMM’s tweet is the “Tiger Woods” change, which I believe had become canon even before the movie came out. Seems more likely that this tweet is referring to the “more flows than Obi-Wan Kenobi-yo” lyric change.
very very great epic list I like it a lot very great job mis mojo one of my very favorite list ever ❤
i'm not surprised with the song order, West Side Story did the same thing, officer Krupke was supposed to be after the rumble.
