I knew her, her husband Henry and people from their circle as a young man. She was a lady, but somehow profoundly fierce. You read her poems well. It was good to feel them in my ears. They reached my heart again. Thank you.
I can only echo Idlinfarm's comments. Your site is a real education. I am so glad you are choosing less obvious choices of poet to read. I really appreciate that.
Thank-you so much for this! So pleased to find this - after a friend recently reminded me that I have failed to explore Gwendolyn Brooks's work... I felt compelled to share the anecdote quote above :) This sort of fell out of me after hearing these poems ... I swear the laughter leaps at the slope of your skin on bone your high, diffident shoulders merry brooks of giggling children the world shrinks not in a foreboding way on your kindness not shrinking but expanding wondrously
I'm glad to know of these wonderful poems and to hear your fine reading of them. How clearly and purely she writes! I'm sorry she didn't live to see our president elected but I feel she possibly had something to do with it in that perhaps her consciousness moved our times along.
Thanks very much for your kind words. I'm pleased you are liking these readings, and I think you are right about Gwendolyn Brooks's influence on our times.
@LuizPagan I am very honored by your comment. Gwendolyn Brooks certainly seems like she was a remarkable woman. Do you have any anecdotes about her you'd like to share for others who see this video and hear her poems? Thank you very much for listening, watching and commenting.
her poems make me emotional, her poems make me write, dream, and find courage in the very movements of my pen.

way beyond Maya Angelou
Just a different "voice". Theres alot of shock, rebellion, an contradiction in her style, compared to Maya's.
