  • Putting the "bones" together of a strecher bar framework is relatively easy, BUT keeping it square and true while stretching the canvas over it can be challenging. Professional artist, Steve Henderson, shares a few tips that will help you achieve professional results. This video follows Stretching Canvas: An Overview of Materials and Process.

So helpful! I struggle with getting it square every time, and it takes so long to get it right. But now I realize what I was doing wrong: when A is out of square, I shouldn't try to adjust A, I should adjust (tap) the two adjacent corners. Also I only was using an L brace to check it for gaps; now I know to measure the diagonals. The cardboard corners was another great tip: I confess, I was using wood glue - after all that work, I wasn't taking chances. Thank you so much for making this vid!

So what does the "skeletal structure" of a canvas- or linen-stretched painting look like? Whether you're a DIY artist or a collector who wants to know more about what makes a painting, this video shows the process of creating the stretcher bar frame that forms the support structure of many paintings.
