The Evo Speedgoat as to be the best ever shoe Hoka have done. I still have one pair and everytime I run in them is like I'm getting one step closer to their end 😢
I just found a new pair of EVO’s on poshmark and have run in them twice, really weird how Hoka didn’t want to keep making that shoe and improving on it.
Same here - they were the best. SG5 upper sucked and I was hoping they fixed this but sad to see that the midsole changed for the worse. I have 2 pairs of Mafate 4, they are good shoes and don't have the problems SG5 had.
Totally agree on the midsole. It’s like cardboard compared to previous models. I’ve had multiple pairs of SG 2,3,4 and 5’s and irrespective of other issues - especially with the uppers, they’ve always had an all-day, plush ride that set them apart from other trail shoes. Now it’s gone, so has their differentiation and relevance. Super disappointing as it feels like the upper is going to work better on this model. Having to rethink what to wear on long days now.
Thanks a million and I shared your same feelings. I only put 2 rounds of trail run into it, and the stuffness and deadness of the midsole were too much to bear I'd see if it would need a bit more mileage to break in, but it seems not quite possible 😹
Super honest and within just 5 minutes got the complete pros&cons. Thanks for the review. That midsole is a game loser, Hoka's main strength seems to be completely diminished, that posh ride... What a wrong design change descision...
Great review! I recently purchased SG5 and really like them for daily trail runs. Don’t have experience with other SG but do have MS4 and love them. I would never purchase NORDA or SPEEDLAND because of ridiculous price! Yes I can get them but I would feel stupid to. Like cycling equipment, prices vary because of brands which I don’t get out of principle. A set of MAAP kit can cost about $600, no problem and thanks
I've only put 20km into my SG6 and for me the midsole is very very stiff. I think the shape and vibe of the shoe has moved back towards the SG4 but let's see if the midsole softens at all.
@@swiftcolin I'm honestly really struggling to find the right shoe this season. Right now the best I have are the Mafate 4 but I can't fit my insoles in there and they are a bit thin width ways. I have 1 SG4 left unused still. Any recommendations? I just want a wideish cushioned grippy rockered trail shoe that can take technical terrain?
Bummer about the midsole. New upper with the SG4 midsole for the 7. Gonna have to find a new shoe now. The 5 midsole sucked compared to the 4. Hoka people want soft cush! By mile 13 in the Imogene pass run the bottom of my feet were killing me in the 5's.
I value your reviews. So disappointed to hear this about the SG6… the SG5 for rolling carriage trail was fine but the midsole seems to go flat after 75miles. Can’t get the SG4 anymore. The Mafate 4 has been great for me on technical trails. What do you turn to for a cushioned every day non technical trainer?
Right now I’m using my last two pairs of SG4’s, so I’m on the search for a new one. I just got the Brooks Caldera 7 but having to send them back because they run a little short, 10.5 usually fits me in every brand, but might try an 11 in the Caldera 7.
Hello, I’ve had like 7 pairs of Hoka Clifton and looking for a cushy alternative for trail running. So you guys don’t recommend 6th but 5th version of SG when I like cushing? Or are you satisfied with other alternatives, such as Saucony Xodus, Terrex Agravic, etc.? Thank you! 🙏
SG6 is definitely more dense underfoot, SG5 is definitely softer underfoot. I just ran 100k in the new Hoka torrent 4, they were also nice if you have a narrow foot.
Same here. Loved the 2,3,4. Was disappointed with upper and grip on the 5. Will skip the 6 also. Too bad, SG was the absolute go to trail shoe for so many!
Damn:/ was looking forward to the 6s. I’ve used the same pair of the 5s for 3 50ks, many miles on trials and they have been great. I’ll be picking up another pair of the 5s while they’re still in stock and on sale 😂
@swiftcolin so had my first run in the SG6 today and WoW, I flew. I did 12miles in my 5's then jumped in my 6's for the last 6miles...they were like the lighter, race version 🫶👌🫶
Your point about wondering if you received a dud based on the midsole comments might be worth bringing to Hoka’s attention. Maybe send the shoe back for them to inspect? Based on your comments I’m not buying it despite being a huge speedgoat fan
I swore by the SG 2’s and 4’s for anything trail, 5 was a big disappointment all around and looks like the 6 is no better so I won’t even waste my time on them. Oddly the Zegama 2 seems to have swooped in to fill that void for me - really liking that one so far.

I’d go with that last pair of SG4 for sure, I’ve also heard great things about the Nike Zegama 2 so far, just wish they were a little less expensive or I would try them.
@@chris.schmied Thanks for the recommendation. I've tried them on at the store and the stack height is pretty huge so I'm worried about technical alpine terrain in them.
@@Rainyfeels I will do a review on them soon. I use them for technical runs here in the alps. I find them very stable. But that’s for my style of running. The Speedgoat 5 was terrible for me on technical terrain.
@@chris.schmied Interesting, maybe I'll give it a try then? Any other favourites? I have fairly wide feet and have struggled a bunch - don't want 0 drops Altra etc.
Agree, the midsole is trash. Super firm, definitely not that marshmallow feel that Hoka is known for. The tongue is still not long enough or padded enough. I did 30 miles on them and then returned them. I am now in the Mafate Speed 4. I have been wearing Speedgoats since version 1. The best versions were the 2, 3 and the Evo. Maybe Hoka will get it right on the 7.
I noticed this and recently tried them on at the shop. The wide fit me perfect and the grip on them seems nice and soft, perfect for slick rock. I will probably gamble with these for the more technical mountain trails.
I ran in SG 3 and 4 and swore I would run in Speedgoat forever. Then version 5 came out and Hoka ruined the cushion. It sounds as if version 6 is not even worth a try so have moved onto an entirely different brand. Hoka- bring back the cushions of Speedgoat 3 or 4 and I will come back in a heartbeat!
@runwithorses1 what do you run with now? Im feeling the same as you. Thinking of going Mafate 4. Bought the SG6s today but definitely going to return them after seeing all these reviews. SG4s were my fav!
@@jakevs6271I am running in Nike Zygama. The foot bed is not my favorite but I am doing fine in them. I also fairly like the Saucony Trabuco max except I can feel the ground a bit much. Tried the Hoka Mofate and was disappointed as they lacked the cushion and bounce of SG 4.
@@jakevs6271 I now am running in Nike Zygama and they are fine. The foot bed is not the best shape for me but they are working well. I also have a pair of Saucony Trabuco Max 2 that feel good except I get too much ground feel while running on gravel roads and the Zygamas have more cushion/bounce. I bought the Hoka Mofate 4 and was disappointed in the lack of bounce and firmer cushion so they are retired with low miles as walking shoes. Some say they like the Mofate as well as the older SG versions but I don't see it. Never thought I could like a pair of Nikes, but they are my SG replacement shoe for now. I also have a pair of New Balance Fresh Foams which are super cushioned but I accidentally bought them a size too small. I think they are worth another try in the correct size. I think the cushion may have been enough to slow my pace a little, but for training I am more concerned about keeping my aging joints happy. For now, it is Nike Zygama.
The Speedgoat line is dead for me after the 5. I loved the 2 and the EVO, the 5 was an attempt to cheaply lowball the EVO, and was a miserable failure.
I am no longer a hoka customer. After 10 years of competitive running, and probably over 20+ pairs of specifically hoka shoes, they ruined their line up with the Challengers 7s being like rounded hard sketchers and the speedgoat 6s were an epic failure from wearing the lugs out in one backyard ultra and feeling sloppy almost immediately from the backs of the shoe being mis shaped, whyyyyy did they make this silly heel resting pop up area??? It looks like a reverse elf shoe.
Just got a pair but just walking around my house I can tell what he is saying is true. May return today. Like others, I’m struggling to get a good trail shoe.
