For me, what made the nuke scene was the haunting silence. It had such a buildup in the score and then just gone. You could feel everyone's relief and simultaneously, their horror.
Especially when you consider that throughout the film we kept getting loud explosions and noises at random dialogue moments. When it finally came time for the explosion... epic nothingness
The face I had as I watched all those people celebrating the success of the atomic bomb, it was horrifying. My face still felt so shocked at what was about to come afterwards.
the scene with the crowd on the bleachers with the cheers mixed with the screams of horror, the clapping with the sobbing, the explosion that rocks ur chest to set that whirlwind of emotion into Oppenheimer.. that scene was absolute perfection and in my opinion the best scene I have witnessed in quite a long while. Probably Nolans best dramatic scene.
i feel like that scene is what really sold the bomb's effect to me. like yeah seeing the practical explosion was cool but that hot white lighting on people's faces is a new fear i never had. and the sounds of people laughing and crying. absolutely haunting.

Strauss spends the entire movie wondering what Oppenheimer could possibly have said to Einstein to make the latter completely ignore him, like it was a big conspiracy. Turns out the two didn't even talk about him and instead wondered about the significance of what had been created.

Nolan is one of those last few directors that when he makes a film it often gets treated like a holiday is coming like Christmas came early..... each film he makes is a gift to movie lovers.
I really liked how the movie wasn’t just about the bomb and appreciate the fact of not showing a recreation of the live effects in Hiroshima but how it made him feel inside. I also really enjoy how they wrapped it up at the end especially with the JFK reference.
I actually regret it because it was my expectation to see a movie about how dramatically devastating it was to decide to built and to use the nuclear bomb
Happy for people who enjoyed it despite the lack of showing the bomb used in anger. In my own personal taste, I felt it was a lost opportunity as it didn't help visualise how bad/dangerous/powerful the bomb was. In other words, without proprely demonstrating how significant the creation was, it limits why any of Oppehnihemer's story mattered. It's like watchin the HBO series Chernobyl but never visually understanding the scale of the disaster. Perhaps the inclusion of the bomb would have taken away from the focus of the charcter and his story, making it a catch-22
Just walked out of the theater an hour ago. I can’t. It’s so good. Go watch it. As fast as you can, avoid the spoilers. It’s so so so so good, everything about it. Sound, cinema, character, dialogue, it is almost flawless. It flys by. It is so gripping in all the right ways.
Completely agree. I think this might be Nolan's best film even tho The Dark Knight will always be my favourite. My whole theatre was stunned at the end and there was absolute silence as we were all leaving. I saw it yesterday and I'm still thinking about it, haven't had a movie impact me like Oppenheimer in a VERY long time.

But it by no means has the same effect that, say a black hole or the waves in interstellar have on you the audience. It's a very forgettable scene. And then it all just turns into a trial/hearing against Oppenheimer due to communism suspicions (which he's not) The most action/impactful scenes in this movie is Florence Pugh's titties. 2x he had to put them in the movie... It was needless, but they were nice I guess. That's the most "action" this movie has
I remember in history class in high school doing a report on Oppenheimer and thinking "God, this could make an awesome movie..." It's been almost 15 years and I'm so stoked that it's not only a reality, but a great film at that
I quit watching nolan movies after I almost walked out of dark knight rises. That movie was godawful.The editing and audio is terrible. Oh I saw a part of interstellar and it was bad too so I gave up.
Just saw Oppenheimer and I think it’s absolutely incredible. The visuals, dialogue scripting, music tension, performances, everything blew me away. The way everything kept building so many times with this loud, intense music/sound astonished me. And the nuke moment itself is surreal. Movie is really awesome, yes it’s better than Barbie, yes you should see it in a theatre instead of at home. There are plenty of moments in the film that simply pay off better in a theatre than they will at home, especially the nuke scene.

It felt more like the 60's than the 40's. Florence Pugh tits on IMAX was really the only highlight of the movie.

I’m so happy to Cillian Murphy getting the recognition he so richly deserves. RDJ has always been a gifted actor. I hope Oscar nods are given to both Murphy and Downey Jr. I think Nolan is going to be the golden boy this awards season and he deserves it.
Until Hollywood and activists say there’s not enough diversity/inclusion or it’s offensive to Japan. So this great movie won’t get the deserving award.
When you see films in this day and age with practical effects instead of cgi and how difficult it is to pull off, it makes you appreciate films like ‘2001: A space Odyssey’
It makes you appreciate most films back in the day; Titanic, Alien, Jurassic Park....Sure some of them had SOME CGI, but it wasnt like the main point of the film. The CGI complemented the practical effects. Which is how it honestly should be. It shouldn't be a crutch. _Titanic_ would NOT look as good as it does now because it would all be CGI. But because Cameron literally BUILT to near scale models of the ship to break in half, he built hallways, he built the stern end of the ship on a rotating table in order to get that shot where it bobs like a cork in the water, it FEELS REAL. You'd never know what shots were CGI unless you knew the behind the scenes of the film, which is how it SHOULD be for film.
In the nuke scene, the tension build-up was top notch! I could see people start to lean forward. More than the visual, the sound of the explosion was what stuck with me. IMAX really enhanced that!
Just came out of a Barbenheimer double feature, and the fact that Oppenheimer and Barbie felt like they were the same length is a testiment to how well Nolan handled this film. I would absolutely recommend seeing this film in theaters for the sound design alone, but the fantastic performances and cinematography are just a bonus.

Sadly Christopher Nolan suffers Stanley Kubrick Syndrome when it comes to Oscars. Shunned by Hollywood because they don't understand film making excellence and there's that saying The House Always Wins. Oppenheimer seems like a direct attempt to win an Oscar with a perfect hand of cards. Nothing more, nothing less. If this is shunned at the Oscars it's going to reveal the system is rigged. Even without having seen the movie, I am so, so happy for Cillian Murphy. It's about damn time he had the lead in a movie like this. I am super-stoked to go see it. Love Christopher Nolan. Love this whole cast. I am so glad to hear from many sources that this movie is f*cking awesome. (And people forget, or never knew, that more people died in the fire-bombing of Tokyo than in both of the nuclear bomb attacks. It was just that the nukes did it in 1.3 seconds.) And real effects always trump CGI. Always.

The silence of the bomb really made it palpable. You really FEEL the amazing horror that they witnessed. You feel the shift from “we did it!” To “dear God this is going to destroy the world.” Man it was such a great movie.

I studied Mathematics and Astrophysics in college. Learned about the theory of relativity. Calculated probabilities using the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Had an internship at Fermilab, named after Enrico Fermi. I was SO excited to see this movie because of the physics, the history, and it’s significance. . . What I did NOT expect was how emotional I would get seeing these scientists recreated on film. The people I would imagine meeting day after day in class. Who I’ve read books on countless times. . . My grandfather was a flamethrower in the three Japanese islands, and was part of the first group sent in after Hiroshima to assess what happened and to help where he could. He always told me that, of all the horrors that war showed him, that Hiroshima trumped all of it. It’s what kept him up at night. What he almost never talked about. . . Nolan did a fantastic job at balancing the awe-inspiring physics and genius that it took to create such a thing, while also making sure to not shy away from the glaringly obvious horrors and nightmares that ensued after it’s creation. Brilliant. Simply brilliant.
Someone said it best, it's like Avengers for Science Graduates lol. I am not a science grad since I did my Degree and Masters in Business but I am always fascinated by history. Seeing the movie namedrop and show people like Bohr, Heisenberg, Einstein, Szilard, Fermi, Teller, even Feynman and his Bongos lol. I geeked out so hard and kept whispering to my friend next to me who have absolutely no idea who these people are lol. That Truman-Oppenheimer meeting broke my heart tho and it probably being real is such a sad tale.

The final scene with Oppenheimer and Einstein, the pure agony of both characters at that moment recognizing the sheer horror that was created. And RDJ's character being a giant ass assuming it was all about him. I've never seen an anti-war film so carefully and beautiful;y wrapped in the theme of patriotism with such impact.
Iron man did a lot to bring RDJ out of obscurity since his drug phase but it also overshadowed so much of his other work. Heart and Souls, and Chaplin come to mind.
I'm old enough to remember him from 80s movies such as The Pick-Up Artist (I worked in a VHS factory). I remember thinking even then that he was the only good thing in some pretty awful fare.
Just saw it...chills. repeatedly. That first atom bomb explosion had me completely out of breath and the way he broke the silence with "I am become death" before the blast hit. God im in awe
This feels like an incredibly important film, not just because it’s awesometacular but because it is an important insight into the way our world is today and the weight of the power we possess. Feels like a required watch to me.

I really appreciated the amount of speed we went through in the last hour because it didn’t FEEL like the world revolves around Oppenhiemer anymore. Oppenheimer had (or is told in the movie to have) a lot of leverage and power during the Los Alamos Lab, and the moment he completed his work is the moment the United States stepped in and uprooted his position. Oppenheimer got his consolation prize as the “Father of the Atom Bomb” but what Oppenheimer really wanted was to show the world that he made a terrible mistake and no one else should ever repeat that (the H Bomb) again.
The entire build up of Trinity Test and then the execution alongside a phenomenal acting and background score, has to be ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC and BEST moments of Cinema, in years to come!! 👏 Bravo!! What an experience.
A movie for cinephiles is a perfect way to describe it. I loved this movie and will see at least 2 more times in theaters. But there aren’t to many friends I can recommend it to, because I know they would get bored within the first 20mins let alone 3 hours😂

Nolan is the Kubrick of our time. That movie was absolutely brilliant. I didn't feel the length at all. The message about cancelling somebody out of envy, spitefulness and perceived slight rings incredibly true today. Just look at Hollywood, social media or politics. The ending between Einstein and Oppenheimer (With the award ceremonies and especially Oppenheimer parable/callback about incinerating the atmosphere) was so well deserved and chilling at the same time. A movie that demands your attention throughout and makes you think about it long past the credits, how rare an occurrence these days.

This was one of the best movies I’ve seen in such a long time. Christopher Nolan killed this movie and it shook me to my core. Acting was inthralling. I saw it in 70mm IMAX the tall cinematic shots were a marvel. It was the best movie experience I’ve had.

Just watched it today and would highly recommend! Nolan does a great job of making you feel immersed not only in the physical world, but in the mentality of the characters. The scene that really stood out to me was when Oppenheimer was giving his speech to the cheering crowd after the bombs were dropped in Japan. The way the cheering of the crowd blended into the screams of terror depicted in Oppenheimer’s mind was truly something else. I will definitely be watching this again when it becomes available on streaming platforms.

Once again, just an amazing work of art. Nolan decides to make a film and actors dont even read the script before agreeing to be a part of it. When you have that level of respect and belief out of the top performers in a field, you know youre one of the greatest to ever do it. I always go back to how many interviews ive seen where actors say it feels like theyre working on a small, independent production when its a Nolan film. Crazy to hear as films like Dark Knight, Inception and Interstellar feel like some of the most open world, gigantic films i have ever viewed. He breaks it down and really puts them through the ringer to give us admirers the product which we long for. Ive never seen him miss. Even Tenet (which some arent too fond of) i loved. It had its flaws but his aspirations and willingness to push the boundary just draw you in as a viewer. Im just glad to be alive in a time where such art is being created, regardless of all the negative in this world, he will always give you a little reprieve and a new perspective on what is and what possibilities lurk just outside of our perceived reality .
Loved this movie. I think the main storyline of this movie isn't an "origins" story of how Oppenheimer built The Bomb, but how he got screwed over afterwards by jealous peers and vindictive superiors. Really drove home the adage that "no good deeds go unpunished", because Oppie really got punished many times over for his monumental success.
Honestly, one of my favourite things about this is that it's an ensemble movie that's giving an opportunity to so many industry mainstays. Yeah, you've got someone like Florence Pugh who is the new it girl in absolutely everything without fail, but then you've got Dane Dehaan, Gustaf Skarsgård, Michael Angarano, Matthew Modine, Jason Clarke, Kenneth Branagh and so many more, filling out the roster.
It released early here in the Philippines and I just wanna say that I'm glad to watch it on the first day of its release. And yes, I have to say this is indeed one of Christopher Nolan's best works yet.

I can honestly call myself a cinemaniac. This movie shook me to my core. When it ended, I stood up, gave it its well-deserved ovations, and left the theater without saying a word. I have never had such a reaction before. I guess this is what happens when you watch a masterpiece.
I just watched Oppenheimer and its a 10/10. I loved how Oppenheimer was portrayed as a flawed human being despite being genius which made him very relatable. Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr both gave flawless acting performances. This might be Christopher Nolan's best movie and I would be shocked if he doesn't get nominated for Best Director by the Oscars

had the pleasure of seeing Oppenheimer at the 70mm IMAX in Providence RI this afternoon. Totally engrossing film (didn't see or hear any phones either) where just about every Nolan actor has their moment. Cillian Murphy- I mean what do you say about his performance other than this is the role and performance all us Nolan fans have been waiting for and hoping for CM ; RDJ totally kills it in the last 1/3 of the movie and it reminds you how awesome of an actor he is; Jason Clark and Gary Oldman really put on masterclasses of their own with Clark having a ton of dialogue and Oldman a few memorable lines. And the Ludwig Göransson soundtrack is fantastic with the "Trinity" track putting everyone on edge in the moments leading up to the bomb test. How this film was edited, too - just magnificent
Although the performances in this film were excellent, the way Nolan chose to tell what should have been an interesting story fell very flat. There were too many things going on, bouncing from one scene to the next with little connection between them. The congressional hearing and the appeal for Ope’s security clearance were exhaustive to the point it felt like watching CSPAN with overly intense music playing in the background. That could have been condensed way down and saved about an hour of nonsense. All the hype for watching this movie on imax was not necessary either. Save 3 hours of your life and leave the sheets out to dry on this one.
I’m just glad Chris Nolan finally gave Cillian Murphy a leading role for once. He’s a very talented character actor but I’ve always been hoping that he’d finally take center stage for his own movie with Chris. And now he finally had.
Kind of interesting that one of the few other films where Cillian is the main character is Danny Boyle's Sunshine, where he also plays a physicist who detonates an explosive of near incomprehensible magnitude.

From the previous couple of Nolan movies, I was most worried about the volume of the nuke being realistic, because Nolan wanted the audience to leave with bleeding ears.
Just one of the heart breaking parts of the movie where oppy would say to his 1st student at Berkeley "youre gonna be okay" by the end, that guy was laying train rails in the desert. Just like 3 scenes the guy would appear and it was tragic as hell because you could see the decline in the side characters life by working for Oppenheimer.
This was one of the best movies I have ever seen. There were some historical inaccuracies but they don’t deter from this movie’s awesomeness. I am so happy that someone from Hollywood finally made a movie for adults again. I hope they continue to realize that their is still in audience that likes these kind of movies.

You almost knew from the beginning of the year that if there would be one movie worthy of an Awesometacular it would probably be this one. Really glad it didn't disappoint as most movies so far have been kinda okay to more or less meh. Was already excited for this one thinking it'll be amazing and visually heavy given the context but had no idea a movie like Oppenheimer could be done without any additional CGI effects and that is amazing in itself given how CGI heavy Nolan films can be. Definitely one of the best directors working now.
Funny, Stuckmann saw this in Imax and complained about the audio mixture for the dialogue, Jeremy saw this on 70mm film and thought the sound mixture was spot on. This makes me thing that this might be a formatting issue and will be interesting to see how many other reviewers for the imax version complain about the mix.
Struckman’s complaints are as meaningless as his praises. He’s as pathetic a schill for Hollywood as Jon Campea. He probably loves the fact that Barbie is a man hating hit piece, because he’s not a man
I thought the way they layered this film was incredible. The small metaphors and little ques were so subtle and SO LOUD. the undertone had this impending feeling of dread , because you understand history and the consequences of what the severity of this invention does to the world.

The build up to the nuke scene and the nuke scene itself gave me goosebumps. Once the bomb was detonated, I swear that silence was louder than the delayed sound wave that followed after.

I agree with most of what you said. Except during my experience the music was WAY too overpowering. It was really difficult to hear the dialogue in parts where there was so much exposition. I was thinking, “Aw man, another Nolan film..” Unfortunately he’s becoming known for this issue more and more

This was honestly, off a first watch, a top 30 movie of all time for me. I'm a history geek and love these types of movies, and Nolan hit it out of the goddamn park with this film. This will be one of the few movies that I will buy merch for, buy the blu-ray, set as my wallpaper, I'm obsessed. I obviously love Nolan, but his movies are sometimes misses for me. But this movie, this movie is nearly perfect in every way. The cast was amazing, both in terms of their performance and just the cast in general, not a single b-list actor in the whole thing. This isn't a movie I would sit down and watch with friends(excluding the first viewing in a theater of course), but I can see myself watching this at least half a dozen more times before the year is over. I loved RDJ and Cillian Murphy. RDJ did such a standout job that he feels like he takes up more runtime than Cillian himself, yet I don't think he has more than 20 minutes of on screen time. And the scene in the court when RDJ's character, Strauss, is finally called out. OMG that scene was beautiful. Just the whole dynamic of RDJ in general was amazing in the whole movie.I knew this movie would be great, but what I didn't expect was a homerun 10/10 film.
Nolan making an epic biopic kind of seemed destined from the time he came onto the scene as a director. He was supposed to make "The Aviator" that Scorsese ended up making, but all roads led to Oppenheimer and I'm so excited to see this film Thursday night.
This movie blew me away. Haven’t felt this from a theatre experience ever, and it feels like even longer since I’ve seen a film of this quality in general. Perfection.
I left the movie theater in shock. From the detonation of the bomb, the scene of celebration mixed with absolute desolation to the coda and the final scene with Einstein and the terror in Oppenhaimer's eyes as he realizes the consequences of his work. And the soundtrack was absolutely epic.
I was not bored once through this film. Such amazing casting. Intense dialogue. Everyone was on their A game. I drove over an hour to see it in IMAX and it was so worth it.
I've watched a lot of documentaries about the Manhattan Project, I like that they also heavily included Edward Teller in this and his ideas for a hydrogen fusion bomb, and how much that also became a heavy part of the plot, and the discussion of whether a super bomb like that should even exist or not as well as Oppenheimers views on it. I feel like Teller is really the true genius behind the atomic bomb program, but it couldn't have happened without Oppenheimer and they had to learn how to walk first before they could run, meaning before they could achieve fusion they had to figure out fission.
I agree he does "deserve" an Oscar, but each film should be judged equally against films that released that year. Best Director or Best Film isn't meant to be a lifetime achievement award

The opening scene with him thinking with the visuals and the soundtrack was the MOST amazing feeling I've had in a cinema ever.. The goosebumps I got were rushing through my body like never before
One of the very best movies that I have seen for a long long time. Beautifully directed and what a cast of actors who superbly portray their characters (often flawed). This is really a thought provoking movie and that's a rarity these days. Well done to all concerned in its making.
I really liked the movie but would have liked more time given to the scientists/engineers and the process behind the construction of the bomb, i wanted to see more planning around, figuring stuff out, stuff like that. Also the Trinity Test build up was amazing but the explosion was kinda disappointing, i feel he should have used the footage at 4:14 to properly depict the scale of the explosion. He used too many zoomed in shots of what looked like just fire, nukes look more like the Sun on earth like what 4:14 looks like. I expected more shots to establish the magnitude of the size of the fireball, something you can clearly see on the real footage of the test.
Weren't they talking about in the movie about having a bomber fly overhead to simulate safe flying distance? Maybe they could have shown it from that perspective somehow.
I love anything Nolan and couldn’t wait for this movie. Maybe it’s the first viewing but this was so different for me. Other Nolan films made me think the entire movie such as Tenet and Inception. But this movie I felt like just a spectator and a story line.
Oppenheimer - My immediate thoughts NON-Spoiler: *How it feels:* Absolute powerhouse of a movie. Everyone that will watch this movie, will feel a lasting impact on them. There are scenes, that you can't describe in words. You just have to see them. You have to feel them. And you have to feel, how those scenes make you feel. *Who it isn't for:* This film absolutely isn't for everyone. And i'd argue there is a really huge percentage of people that will have no enjoyment with this movie. Broken down without any regard on the subject matter and how it is presented on the simplest level the movie consists to 99% of people talking with each other. And even more so, often talking to each other about things many people have no interest, knowledge or understanding of, but that is okay, because even if you can't understand everything people say to each other and what it means, you can still absolutely feel what was said from the reaction of everyone in the scenes. In my viewing there was a row of about 10 teenagers, roughly 14 years old i'd guess, that all left after 30 minutes, and i can't say it was a bad decision for them, because they likely just don't have the patience and the attention span for this. *Actors:* If you've seen any movie of the last 20 years you will probably see a familiar face in here. If you've seen many movies, you will be blown away by how many powerhouses of actors you will find in this movie. Even in roles that are so small that you barely see them. In fact there are so many i'm certain i haven't even recognized half of the ones i should have. I have to give very special praises to the performances of Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon and especially Robert Downey Jr. I could list many more, of which not a single one would be undeserved, but this list would find no end, so more on some specific actors in the spoiler section. *Soundtrack/Music:* As i'm really used to by this point, it was no surprised to be blown away by Ludwig Göransson's work here. It might not have the most recognizable tracks that I'll listen to over and over again like for Tenet (Göransson and Nolan's last movie together) but the use of music and sound in this movie, makes you feel the impact of everything that happens so much more. Without it some scenes wouldn't even make sense, but with it, those scenes are some of the most powerful ones i've ever felt. *Length:* With a runtime of almost exactly 3 hours, this is one of the longest films that get released these days. Not everyone will like to sit there for such a long time, especially how i said earlier, people that can easily get bored by "people just talking". For me, i was completely glued to the screen the whole time. Whenever something happened in the cinema around me that i had to pay attention to like people leaving to go to the toilet, it felt like i got grabbed right out of the movie and lost so much, even if they only exchanged a word, since i was hooked on every single word said. I'm probably an outlier when it comes to managing with longer movies, often times i wish a movie would have kept going when others say it was already way too long, but again with this one, when it was over i didn't expect 3 hours to be over already, i could have easily sat there another hour. That is not to say they needed another hour though, everything the movie wanted to tell was completely explored. *The Nolan touch:* I'm a huge fan of everything Christopher Nolan touches. I strongly believe this movie only works because of his vision. It is not a subject i myself am super familiar with, nor is it one i find the biggest interest in, yet it was as captivating as this movie could have been, and i strongly believe it was perfectly executed and i wouldn't change a thing about it. *My personal - genre rating:* As the kind of movie, as a movie about Oppenheimer, this movie can get nothing else then a 10/10. There is not a single flaw i can say, i was hooked from start to finish and i have experienced things i never felt before in my life, and this movie will stay with me for a long time. This movie left me with an impact, only this kind of movie can. And i couldn't imagine any other movie doing this impact any better. *My really personal - overall rating:* Having to compare this to all of Nolan's other work, wait a second and hear me out please, it will probably end up being my lowest rated Nolan movie. The only reason it is that way though, is that Nolan in my opinion has only ever made masterpieces. Most of his movies are my absolute favorite movies i've ever seen. And Oppenheimer is no exception to that, the only thing holding it back, has nothing to do with the movie itself, but with me. My personal interests just align way more with everything else Nolan has done in the past, so while even for my very stupid personal rating i will probably only give this a 9/10 or 9.5/10 that is purely because it never had a chance to speak to me how many of his other films can in the first place. *Last NON-Spoiler words:* While i strongly believe that many people won't have the patience or any interest in this movie and subject, the ones that do give it a chance will get an experience in the cinema they haven't felt before, i certainly did. You don't need to know anything about Oppenheimer going in to this, while the movie is long, it is moving very fast and shining light on all of it's players and often times when referencing a character that hasn't had a major role in the movie even shortly flashes back to them to remind everyone who the discussion currently went to. If you are considering if you want to go to the cinema or if you want to wait till it comes out digitally i will HIGHLY recommend going to the cinema. I of course haven't seen it at home, but there were dozens of scenes i can't imagine having nearly the same impact that i felt in the cinema.
VERY detailed post and i agree. I didn't hate this film. But i admit i think the first hour kinda drags. And the whole vibe of them marketing to see this in Imax. Exactly at the 2 hour mark we see the explosion and i don't feel like that's worthy of an Imax ticket for a single scene It is a powerful movie, but 100% not made for everyone. I saw Mi7 twice so far in Imax and THAT'S a film i recommend I think Nolan also shouldn't have made this an R film. Pg13 would have been better i feel because literally one sex scene with a top less woman, could have easily shot around that. While not a bad film by any means, i feel for a lot of people this should be a matinee movie and im gonna make a video on it
I don’t think it should have not not been an R-film. This is how Christopher Nolan envisioned it and it shouldn’t have to change for a rating. In the Netherlands it’s 12 years and older and I am sure many countries have that, so I don’t think for many countries it should change the income based on that.

For me, what made the nuke scene was the haunting silence. It had such a buildup in the score and then just gone. You could feel everyone's relief and simultaneously, their horror.
Especially when you consider that throughout the film we kept getting loud explosions and noises at random dialogue moments.

The face I had as I watched all those people celebrating the success of the atomic bomb, it was horrifying. My face still felt so shocked at what was about to come afterwards.

the scene with the crowd on the bleachers with the cheers mixed with the screams of horror, the clapping with the sobbing, the explosion that rocks ur chest to set that whirlwind of emotion into Oppenheimer.. that scene was absolute perfection and in my opinion the best scene I have witnessed in quite a long while. Probably Nolans best dramatic scene.
i feel like that scene is what really sold the bomb's effect to me. like yeah seeing the practical explosion was cool but that hot white lighting on people's faces is a new fear i never had. and the sounds of people laughing and crying. absolutely haunting.

I really liked how the movie wasn’t just about the bomb and appreciate the fact of not showing a recreation of the live effects in Hiroshima but how it made him feel inside. I also really enjoy how they wrapped it up at the end especially with the JFK reference.

Happy for people who enjoyed it despite the lack of showing the bomb used in anger. In my own personal taste, I felt it was a lost opportunity as it didn't help visualise how bad/dangerous/powerful the bomb was. In other words, without proprely demonstrating how significant the creation was, it limits why any of Oppehnihemer's story mattered.
It's like watchin the HBO series Chernobyl but never visually understanding the scale of the disaster. Perhaps the inclusion of the bomb would have taken away from the focus of the charcter and his story, making it a catch-22

Completely agree. I think this might be Nolan's best film even tho The Dark Knight will always be my favourite. My whole theatre was stunned at the end and there was absolute silence as we were all leaving. I saw it yesterday and I'm still thinking about it, haven't had a movie impact me like Oppenheimer in a VERY long time.

Just saw Oppenheimer and I think it’s absolutely incredible. The visuals, dialogue scripting, music tension, performances, everything blew me away. The way everything kept building so many times with this loud, intense music/sound astonished me. And the nuke moment itself is surreal.
Movie is really awesome, yes it’s better than Barbie, yes you should see it in a theatre instead of at home. There are plenty of moments in the film that simply pay off better in a theatre than they will at home, especially the nuke scene.

It felt more like the 60's than the 40's. Florence Pugh tits on IMAX was really the only highlight of the movie.

When you see films in this day and age with practical effects instead of cgi and how difficult it is to pull off, it makes you appreciate films like ‘2001: A space Odyssey’
It makes you appreciate most films back in the day; Titanic, Alien, Jurassic Park....Sure some of them had SOME CGI, but it wasnt like the main point of the film. The CGI complemented the practical effects. Which is how it honestly should be. It shouldn't be a crutch. _Titanic_ would NOT look as good as it does now because it would all be CGI. But because Cameron literally BUILT to near scale models of the ship to break in half, he built hallways, he built the stern end of the ship on a rotating table in order to get that shot where it bobs like a cork in the water, it FEELS REAL. You'd never know what shots were CGI unless you knew the behind the scenes of the film, which is how it SHOULD be for film.
I can't even imagine seeing such a visually impressive movie in 1968, even nowadays in 2023 it's breathtaking
Even Blade Runner's effects aged relatively well. Even the cinematography looks far ahead of it's time.

Just came out of a Barbenheimer double feature, and the fact that Oppenheimer and Barbie felt like they were the same length is a testiment to how well Nolan handled this film. I would absolutely recommend seeing this film in theaters for the sound design alone, but the fantastic performances and cinematography are just a bonus.

Sadly Christopher Nolan suffers Stanley Kubrick Syndrome when it comes to Oscars. Shunned by Hollywood because they don't understand film making excellence and there's that saying The House Always Wins. Oppenheimer seems like a direct attempt to win an Oscar with a perfect hand of cards. Nothing more, nothing less. If this is shunned at the Oscars it's going to reveal the system is rigged. But what award system isn't ?

Even without having seen the movie, I am so, so happy for Cillian Murphy. It's about damn time he had the lead in a movie like this. I am super-stoked to go see it. Love Christopher Nolan. Love this whole cast. I am so glad to hear from many sources that this movie is f*cking awesome. (And people forget, or never knew, that more people died in the fire-bombing of Tokyo than in both of the nuclear bomb attacks. It was just that the nukes did it in 1.3 seconds.) And real effects always trump CGI. Always.

There's only ONE scene of the explosion, which is the initial test, not the actual bombings, and even then you can tell that - by his means of using practical effects instead of CGI - it was a very small explosion just zoomed in and focusing on different angles of a fire/smoke cloud. But it by no means has the same effect that, say a black hole or the waves in interstellar have on you the audience. It's a very forgettable scene. And then it all just turns into a trial/hearing against Oppenheimer due to communism suspicions (which he's not)

The silence of the bomb really made it palpable. You really FEEL the amazing horror that they witnessed. You feel the shift from “we did it!” To “dear God this is going to destroy the world.” Man it was such a great movie.

Someone said it best, it's like Avengers for Science Graduates lol. I am not a science grad since I did my Degree and Masters in Business but I am always fascinated by history. Seeing the movie namedrop and show people like Bohr, Heisenberg, Einstein, Szilard, Fermi, Teller, even Feynman and his Bongos lol. I geeked out so hard and kept whispering to my friend next to me who have absolutely no idea who these people are lol. Just saw it...chills. repeatedly. That first atom bomb explosion had me completely out of breath and the way he broke the silence with "I am become death" before the blast hit. God im in awe
This feels like an incredibly important film, not just because it’s awesometacular but because it is an important insight into the way our world is today and the weight of the power we possess. Feels like a required watch to me.
The first season of Peaky Blinders made me a huge fan of Cillian. He is an extremely talented actor. Glad people are seeing that now.

I really appreciated the amount of speed we went through in the last hour because it didn’t FEEL like the world revolves around Oppenhiemer anymore. Oppenheimer had (or is told in the movie to have) a lot of leverage and power during the Los Alamos Lab, and the moment he completed his work is the moment the United States stepped in and uprooted his position. Oppenheimer got his consolation prize as the “Father of the Atom Bomb” but what Oppenheimer really wanted was to show the world that he made a terrible mistake and no one else should ever repeat that (the H Bomb) again.
The entire build up of Trinity Test and then the execution alongside a phenomenal acting and background score, has to be ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC and BEST moments of Cinema, in years to come!! 👏 Bravo!! What an experience.
A movie for cinephiles is a perfect way to describe it. I loved this movie and will see at least 2 more times in theaters. But there aren’t to many friends I can recommend it to, because I know they would get bored within the first 20mins let alone 3 hours😂

I didn't feel the length at all. The message about cancelling somebody out of envy, spitefulness and perceived slight rings incredibly true today. Just look at Hollywood, social media or politics.
The ending between Einstein and Oppenheimer (With the award ceremonies and especially Oppenheimer parable/callback about incinerating the atmosphere) was so well deserved and chilling at the same time.

Cillian Murphy has been amazing since Batman Begins. I remember thinking "Who is this guy?" He acted the hell out of Scarecrow.

Just watched it today and would highly recommend! Nolan does a great job of making you feel immersed not only in the physical world, but in the mentality of the characters. The scene that really stood out to me was when Oppenheimer was giving his speech to the cheering crowd after the bombs were dropped in Japan. The way the cheering of the crowd blended into the screams of terror depicted in Oppenheimer’s mind was truly something else. I will definitely be watching this again when it becomes available on streaming platforms.

Once again, just an amazing work of art.
Nolan decides to make a film and actors dont even read the script before agreeing to be a part of it. When you have that level of respect and belief out of the top performers in a field, you know youre one of the greatest to ever do it. I always go back to how many interviews ive seen where actors say it feels like theyre working on a small, independent production when its a Nolan film. Crazy to hear as films like Dark Knight, Inception and Interstellar feel like some of the most open world, gigantic films i have ever viewed. He breaks it down and really puts them through the ringer to give us admirers the product which we long for. Ive never seen him miss. Even Tenet (which some arent too fond of) i loved. It had its flaws but his aspirations and willingness to push the boundary just draw you in as a viewer. Im just glad to be alive in a time where such art is being created, regardless of all the negative in this world, he will always give you a little reprieve and a new perspective on what is and what possibilities lurk just outside of our perceived reality .
Loved this movie. I think the main storyline of this movie isn't an "origins" story of how Oppenheimer built The Bomb, but how he got screwed over afterwards by jealous peers and vindictive superiors. Really drove home the adage that "no good deeds go unpunished", because Oppie really got punished many times over for his monumental success.
Honestly, one of my favourite things about this is that it's an ensemble movie that's giving an opportunity to so many industry mainstays. Yeah, you've got someone like Florence Pugh who is the new it girl in absolutely everything without fail, but then you've got Dane Dehaan, Gustaf Skarsgård, Michael Angarano, Matthew Modine, Jason Clarke, Kenneth Branagh and so many more, filling out the roster.
It released early here in the Philippines and I just wanna say that I'm glad to watch it on the first day of its release. And yes, I have to say this is indeed one of Christopher Nolan's best works yet.

I just watched Oppenheimer and its a 10/10. I loved how Oppenheimer was portrayed as a flawed human being despite being genius which made him very relatable. Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr both gave flawless acting performances. This might be Christopher Nolan's best movie and I would be shocked if he doesn't get nominated for Best Director by the Oscars

had the pleasure of seeing Oppenheimer at the 70mm IMAX in Providence RI this afternoon. Totally engrossing film (didn't see or hear any phones either) where just about every Nolan actor has their moment. Cillian Murphy- I mean what do you say about his performance other than this is the role and performance all us Nolan fans have been waiting for and hoping for CM ; RDJ totally kills it in the last 1/3 of the movie and it reminds you how awesome of an actor he is; Jason Clark and Gary Oldman really put on masterclasses of their own with Clark having a ton of dialogue and Oldman a few memorable lines. And the Ludwig Göransson soundtrack is fantastic with the "Trinity" track putting everyone on edge in the moments leading up to the bomb test. How this film was edited, too - just magnificent
Although the performances in this film were excellent, the way Nolan chose to tell what should have been an interesting story fell very flat. There were too many things going on, bouncing from one scene to the next with little connection between them. The congressional hearing and the appeal for Ope’s security clearance were exhaustive to the point it felt like watching CSPAN with overly intense music playing in the background. That could have been condensed way down and saved about an hour of nonsense. All the hype for watching this movie on imax was not necessary either. Save 3 hours of your life and leave the sheets out to dry on this one.
I’m just glad Chris Nolan finally gave Cillian Murphy a leading role for once. He’s a very talented character actor but I’ve always been hoping that he’d finally take center stage for his own movie with Chris.

Kind of interesting that one of the few other films where Cillian is the main character is Danny Boyle's Sunshine, where he also plays a physicist who detonates an explosive of near incomprehensible magnitude.

From the previous couple of Nolan movies, I was most worried about the volume of the nuke being realistic, because Nolan wanted the audience to leave with bleeding ears.
Just one of the heart breaking parts of the movie where oppy would say to his 1st student at Berkeley "youre gonna be okay" by the end, that guy was laying train rails in the desert.
Just like 3 scenes the guy would appear and it was tragic as hell because you could see the decline in the side characters life by working for Oppenheimer.
This was one of the best movies I have ever seen. There were some historical inaccuracies but they don’t deter from this movie’s awesomeness. I am so happy that someone from Hollywood finally made a movie for adults again. I hope they continue to realize that their is still in audience that likes these kind of movies.

You almost knew from the beginning of the year that if there would be one movie worthy of an Awesometacular it would probably be this one. Really glad it didn't disappoint as most movies so far have been kinda okay to more or less meh. Was already excited for this one thinking it'll be amazing and visually heavy given the context but had no idea a movie like Oppenheimer could be done without any additional CGI effects and that is amazing in itself given how CGI heavy Nolan films can be. Definitely one of the best directors working now.
Funny, Stuckmann saw this in Imax and complained about the audio mixture for the dialogue, Jeremy saw this on 70mm film and thought the sound mixture was spot on. This makes me thing that this might be a formatting issue and will be interesting to see how many other reviewers for the imax version complain about the mix.

For the record, saw it on 70mm IMAX. Got a spot right in the middle. Absolutely no issues understanding dialogue throughout the whole run time.
Gary Oldman's Truman was the highlight of the movie for me. He is such a genius chameleon, no one has ever been better at that.
I thought the way they layered this film was incredible. The small metaphors and little ques were so subtle and SO LOUD. the undertone had this impending feeling of dread , because you understand history and the consequences of what the severity of this invention does to the world.
I would absolutely watch a 5 hours director’s edition of this absolute master peace.

The build up to the nuke scene and the nuke scene itself gave me goosebumps. Once the bomb was detonated, I swear that silence was louder than the delayed sound wave that followed after.
It's one of the best casts ever assembled in a movie.

I was watching the nuke scene hoping it wouldn't work 😅 watched Cillian portray Oppenheimer grasping the reality of what they'd done. This was so well done!

Saw it in IMAX. The sound was amazing. Picture was amazing. Nolan gets Director nom for sure. Would love to see Murphy get Best Actor nom and RDJ get Best Supporting Actor nom.

I agree with most of what you said. Except during my experience the music was WAY too overpowering. It was really difficult to hear the dialogue in parts where there was so much exposition. I was thinking, “Aw man, another Nolan film..” Unfortunately he’s becoming known for this issue more and more

Really glad Cillian Murphy got his time to shine with his lead role in this film! Been a fan of him for a long time. Really looking forward to seeing this in IMAX. Glad this film doesn't have the sound issue like some of Nolan's previous films though.

This was honestly, off a first watch, a top 30 movie of all time for me. I'm a history geek and love these types of movies, and Nolan hit it out of the goddamn park with this film. This will be one of the few movies that I will buy merch for, buy the blu-ray, set as my wallpaper, I'm obsessed. I obviously love Nolan, but his movies are sometimes misses for me. But this movie, this movie is nearly perfect in every way. The cast was amazing, both in terms of their performance and just the cast in general, not a single b-list actor in the whole thing. This isn't a movie I would sit down and watch with friends(excluding the first viewing in a theater of course), but I can see myself watching this at least half a dozen more times before the year is over. I loved RDJ and Cillian Murphy. RDJ did such a standout job that he feels like he takes up more runtime than Cillian himself, yet I don't think he has more than 20 minutes of on screen time. And the scene in the court when RDJ's character, Strauss, is finally called out. OMG that scene was beautiful. Just the whole dynamic of RDJ in general was amazing in the whole movie.I knew this movie would be great, but what I didn't expect was a homerun 10/10 film.

Nolan making an epic biopic kind of seemed destined from the time he came onto the scene as a director. He was supposed to make "The Aviator" that Scorsese ended up making, but all roads led to Oppenheimer and I'm so excited to see this film Thursday night.

This movie blew me away. Haven’t felt this from a theatre experience ever, and it feels like even longer since I’ve seen a film of this quality in general. Perfection.
I left the movie theater in shock. From the detonation of the bomb, the scene of celebration mixed with absolute desolation to the coda and the final scene with Einstein and the terror in Oppenhaimer's eyes as he realizes the consequences of his work. And the soundtrack was absolutely epic.

I was not bored once through this film. Such amazing casting. Intense dialogue. Everyone was on their A game. I drove over an hour to see it in IMAX and it was so worth it.
I've watched a lot of documentaries about the Manhattan Project, I like that they also heavily included Edward Teller in this and his ideas for a hydrogen fusion bomb, and how much that also became a heavy part of the plot, and the discussion of whether a super bomb like that should even exist or not as well as Oppenheimers views on it. I feel like Teller is really the true genius behind the atomic bomb program, but it couldn't have happened without Oppenheimer and they had to learn how to walk first before they could run, meaning before they could achieve fusion they had to figure out fission.
Nolan always delivers a cinematic spectacle to behold.
It is time for Nolan to win his first Oscar. He has deserved it for years now.
I agree he does "deserve" an Oscar, but each film should be judged equally against films that released that year. Best Director or Best Film isn't meant to be a lifetime achievement award
It’s criminal that he hasn’t gotten one yet, but this is the year. Hollywood is a garbage heap, and this movie stands so much taller than any other.

The opening scene with him thinking with the visuals and the soundtrack was the MOST amazing feeling I've had in a cinema ever.. The goosebumps I got were rushing through my body like never before
One of the very best movies that I have seen for a long long time. Beautifully directed and what a cast of actors who superbly portray their characters (often flawed). This is really a thought provoking movie and that's a rarity these days. Well done to all concerned in its making.

I really liked the movie but would have liked more time given to the scientists/engineers and the process behind the construction of the bomb, i wanted to see more planning around, figuring stuff out, stuff like that. Also the Trinity Test build up was amazing but the explosion was kinda disappointing, i feel he should have used the footage at 4:14 to properly depict the scale of the explosion. He used too many zoomed in shots of what looked like just fire, nukes look more like the Sun on earth like what 4:14 looks like. I expected more shots to establish the magnitude of the size of the fireball, something you can clearly see on the real footage of the test.
Weren't they talking about in the movie about having a bomber fly overhead to simulate safe flying distance? Maybe they could have shown it from that perspective somehow.
I love anything Nolan and couldn’t wait for this movie. Maybe it’s the first viewing but this was so different for me. Other Nolan films made me think the entire movie such as Tenet and Inception. But this movie I felt like just a spectator and a story line.
Oppenheimer - My immediate thoughts NON-Spoiler:
*How it feels:*
Absolute powerhouse of a movie. Everyone that will watch this movie, will feel a lasting impact on them. There are scenes, that you can't describe in words. You just have to see them. You have to feel them. And you have to feel, how those scenes make you feel.
*Who it isn't for:*
This film absolutely isn't for everyone. And i'd argue there is a really huge percentage of people that will have no enjoyment with this movie. Broken down without any regard on the subject matter and how it is presented on the simplest level the movie consists to 99% of people talking with each other. And even more so, often talking to each other about things many people have no interest, knowledge or understanding of, but that is okay, because even if you can't understand everything people say to each other and what it means, you can still absolutely feel what was said from the reaction of everyone in the scenes. In my viewing there was a row of about 10 teenagers, roughly 14 years old i'd guess, that all left after 30 minutes, and i can't say it was a bad decision for them, because they likely just don't have the patience and the attention span for this.
*Actors:*
If you've seen any movie of the last 20 years you will probably see a familiar face in here. If you've seen many movies, you will be blown away by how many powerhouses of actors you will find in this movie. Even in roles that are so small that you barely see them. In fact there are so many i'm certain i haven't even recognized half of the ones i should have. I have to give very special praises to the performances of Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon and especially Robert Downey Jr.
I could list many more, of which not a single one would be undeserved, but this list would find no end, so more on some specific actors in the spoiler section.
*Soundtrack/Music:*
As i'm really used to by this point, it was no surprised to be blown away by Ludwig Göransson's work here. It might not have the most recognizable tracks that I'll listen to over and over again like for Tenet (Göransson and Nolan's last movie together) but the use of music and sound in this movie, makes you feel the impact of everything that happens so much more. Without it some scenes wouldn't even make sense, but with it, those scenes are some of the most powerful ones i've ever felt.
*Length:*
With a runtime of almost exactly 3 hours, this is one of the longest films that get released these days. Not everyone will like to sit there for such a long time, especially how i said earlier, people that can easily get bored by "people just talking". For me, i was completely glued to the screen the whole time. Whenever something happened in the cinema around me that i had to pay attention to like people leaving to go to the toilet, it felt like i got grabbed right out of the movie and lost so much, even if they only exchanged a word, since i was hooked on every single word said. I'm probably an outlier when it comes to managing with longer movies, often times i wish a movie would have kept going when others say it was already way too long, but again with this one, when it was over i didn't expect 3 hours to be over already, i could have easily sat there another hour. That is not to say they needed another hour though, everything the movie wanted to tell was completely explored.
*The Nolan touch:*
I'm a huge fan of everything Christopher Nolan touches. I strongly believe this movie only works because of his vision. It is not a subject i myself am super familiar with, nor is it one i find the biggest interest in, yet it was as captivating as this movie could have been, and i strongly believe it was perfectly executed and i wouldn't change a thing about it.
*My personal - genre rating:*
As the kind of movie, as a movie about Oppenheimer, this movie can get nothing else then a 10/10. There is not a single flaw i can say, i was hooked from start to finish and i have experienced things i never felt before in my life, and this movie will stay with me for a long time. This movie left me with an impact, only this kind of movie can. And i couldn't imagine any other movie doing this impact any better.
*My really personal - overall rating:*
Having to compare this to all of Nolan's other work, wait a second and hear me out please, it will probably end up being my lowest rated Nolan movie. The only reason it is that way though, is that Nolan in my opinion has only ever made masterpieces. Most of his movies are my absolute favorite movies i've ever seen. And Oppenheimer is no exception to that, the only thing holding it back, has nothing to do with the movie itself, but with me. My personal interests just align way more with everything else Nolan has done in the past, so while even for my very stupid personal rating i will probably only give this a 9/10 or 9.5/10 that is purely because it never had a chance to speak to me how many of his other films can in the first place.
*Last NON-Spoiler words:*
While i strongly believe that many people won't have the patience or any interest in this movie and subject, the ones that do give it a chance will get an experience in the cinema they haven't felt before, i certainly did. You don't need to know anything about Oppenheimer going in to this, while the movie is long, it is moving very fast and shining light on all of it's players and often times when referencing a character that hasn't had a major role in the movie even shortly flashes back to them to remind everyone who the discussion currently went to.
If you are considering if you want to go to the cinema or if you want to wait till it comes out digitally i will HIGHLY recommend going to the cinema. I of course haven't seen it at home, but there were dozens of scenes i can't imagine having nearly the same impact that i felt in the cinema.

I didn't hate this film. But i admit i think the first hour kinda drags. And the whole vibe of them marketing to see this in Imax.
Exactly at the 2 hour mark we see the explosion and i don't feel like that's worthy of an Imax ticket for a single scene
It is a powerful movie, but 100% not made for everyone. I saw Mi7 twice so far in Imax and THAT'S a film i recommend
I think Nolan also shouldn't have made this an R film. Pg13 would have been better i feel because literally one sex scene with a top less woman, could have easily shot around that.

I don’t think it should have not not been an R-film. This is how Christopher Nolan envisioned it and it shouldn’t have to change for a rating. In the Netherlands it’s 12 years and older and I am sure many countries have that, so I don’t think for many countries it should change the income based on that.
TLDR: yeah I mostly agree with this, BUT it's officially my 2nd favorite Nolan film
