They are fantastic bells and it gives me great pleasure to hear them on the occasions when I'm visiting York and they're ringing. I think their tonal quality is partly down to them being Taylor's bells and partly due to them being cast as a ring of twelve.
Many thanks, yes, I think I chose a couple of slightly different filming positions to most (so the tenor ringers weren't so visible, lol) and that worked. :-) Ringing here was by far and away the highlight of the 3 days I spent in York. Going up to see the bells especially was phenomenal, nothing more and nothing less, and the camera did well up there :-)
They are truly top-class - Taylor's showpiece ring, and rightly so - and it was a great pleasure to ring here and participate in - and listen to - some really high quality stuff. I just loved Stedman Cinques on these. Just heavenly!!
Thanks Steve. Whitechapel can cast some good stuff - Bow for instance, and Liverpool Cath are lovely but the acoustics are not - but these are just top drawer. They are superb. To hear them, especially the slightly-dominating back 4, in the ringing room being rung to Bristol Max like they were here was just a privelege to listen to. And it is phenomenal in the belfry, nothing less!!
Thanks Simon, excellent video indeed. Some one once asked if Yorkminster would sound as good if cast by Whitechapel a company I have a HUGE heart for. The answer in my opinion is NO. Taylor tenors are simply the best and York Tenor is unique, I don't even think any other Taylor tenor comes close to it. Yorkminster is the finest ring in the world. A heavenly warm sound, they glow and have so much depth to them. And to hear them rung by experts is simply BEAUTIFUL.
@@FranzFerdinandVIII Gillet and Johnston were very very good, though I think they were better at smaller rings (up to about 20cwt). I don't think they would've gotten close had they cast a ring similar to York Minster.
Simon your correct Whitechapel do have some nice rings but as my Dad ex bell hanger for whitechapel said, Taylors for tenors and whitechapel for trebles, I think he was right. Also the fact is that bells are as only as good as the tower and the surrounds and York is brilliant. You know it would be interesting if Liverpool Cathedral bells were in the other tower what they would sound like. If only they could spend the money on Liverpool for better accoustics they would sound amazing I think
Awesome 😮 the bells sound absolutely amazing, I so want to ring there one day.
Glorious, majestic sound! I love it.
Love hearing the bells
I love hearing this sound!
it's bells like this that make want to go and ring on any day of the week. They are definitely on the list

Great video and great ringing. Nice one.
Love this video - great overall aspect of the ringing room - perhaps the best I have seen on a youtube clip of York
Many thanks. I have a Nikon Coolpix S9200 and yes, it did a magnificent job in the belfry :)
Many thanks. Was really great, and I picked a good evening to go (not too many people there) so got a fair ring too :-)
Lovely set of bells, well rung :)
I too am non-religious but the bells are just stunning!!

As for me, Gillett & Johnston is my favorite bell foundry because of Riverside Church NYC, but I do NOT want to offend others

I Love Great Peter Is It Ring ing?
I like the model in the middle where do you get it from
I have no idea - but it looks to me like that was custom-made!
How... How can they have perfect cordination?
Years and years of practice and attention to detail!
Now they all got the tin tack.
a new head bell ringer to be employed
Hope he is not from Notre Dame with a hunch back and deaf
I've heard it's not so impossible to get a ring here anymore.
