    For me, I would have used the flat table surface and the flat metal box as the ball separator. Kind of like Jenga mechanics...you could easily determine which balls were thicker or thinner by sandwiching multiple balls between the 2 surfaces to see which battles were slightly smaller in diameter.

    Neat trick. If you line up ball bearings between two flat surfaces, only the larger ones have pressure applied to them. With three sizes you'd have to cull the largest first, but it's helpful for sorting and bearing design. No need for a cage if a 1mm smaller ball can act as a spacer.

    • @johnstedman4075
      @johnstedman4075 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think the overall depth of the part of the cap that fits into the hole in the box may be slightly less than the thickness of the top aluminium plate, thus giving the large ball bearing more "headroom", but the tolerances are obviously very precise throughout the engineering of this puzzle!

    As soon as you said they were different sizes and 1 of them was biggest, all I could think of was a nest.

  • @smokeandkippers
    @smokeandkippers 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’ve just solved this .. I could see one ball was slightly bigger so I weighed them all and then discovered there are actually three different sizes of ball .. only then I realised the balls have to be staggered to fit .. took me a few attempts to realise the largest ball goes on the top row furthest from the opening or it will not let you completely close the lid .. mr puzzle you just need to change the large ball and the top will fit flush 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
    To be perfectly honest I don’t know how I feel about this puzzle. If I didn’t have a set of scales then I wouldn’t be able to solve it as it’s impossible to see that the balls are different as there’s only 0.4g between the small and medium sized balls.
    If a puzzle says “no external tools are allowed” then you shouldn’t need a micrometer or set of scales to solve it!
    If you can’t weigh or measure the balls it is IMPOSSIBLE to solve!
    I’m disappointed 😞

    • @Aviertje
      @Aviertje 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think he solved it without using those tools; he just took them out as a confirmation for youtube purposes. Maybe the big ball was in the incorrect spot, but I think that was simply him thinking it was a very snug fit and flat enough to match the victory condition.
