We were fortunate enough to interview Sam Gooden last year for our “Big 9” and “The Impressions: Chattanooga to the World Stage” exhibits. Sam and the Impressions’ meteoric rise to fame paralleled the civil rights movement and their songs “Keep on Pushing” and “People Get Ready” became the movement’s unofficial anthems. They left an indelible mark on music- writing iconic anthems, winning awards (inductees into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame), and playing sold-out shows. Their songs gave people hope, when hope was hard to come by. Sam passed away last week and he will be greatly missed. We wanted to share a clip from our “Big 9” documentary to honor his amazing life.
