    It's like watching liquid mathematics creating musical ecospheres (casually for a laugh) I don't understand how they do that - but it's completely just awesome.

      I don't aim to fix what they do as science, and I'm not the most knowledgeable person there ever was. But I think John laid a hint in the "Lounge Lizard Alone" documentary. Therein, he says the ensemble will start writing off a riff, but they won't meter it, they'll just sort of play "around" it. I think that's probably part of the secret, being attentive to the melody or the groove, not being shy about doing whatever it suggests, without choking it to death with meters and grids as soon as it's born. How's that sound?

    I got drawn into the lounge lizzards because of a David Lynch movie I saw at one point in the early to mid 90's. It was a complete departure from listening to Joy Division, Yazoo, Squirel Nut Zippers (although that band is a little closer to the mark). I was 19 at the time.

    THIS IS FANTASTIC! BUT I'M HERE CUZ OF DOUGIE BOWNE GREAT DRUMMER, COLLABORATOR WITH IGGY POP DURING HIS FINEST GOLDEN AGE YEARS! A YEAR BEFORE THIS, IN 1981, THEY RECORDED "PARTY", AND DONE SOME KILLER TOURING, WITH MOST EXPLOSIVE VERSIONS OF IGGY'S SOLO STUFF, AND STOOGES CLASSICS!

    I saw them in Munich twice. I think this was the first time. But then, they had to give 3 encores that seem to be missing from this footage? And the announcement by John Lurie having to end it, before this turned into a dance party (too late by then;-) I am glad that I finally found this! Was looking for it forever. Thanks!

    Five Star Musicians from the word go. I visualize how many hours of practice and listening to other great jazz players. Here the Lizards really really impress me and other musicians who respect and honor the highest standard in jazz music More from the Lizards if possible??? thank you

      Lurie doesn't know what jazz is - he tries to imitate it without actually studying and learning it.

    I gotta say....there's definitely something missing here. Can't put my finger on it. They know how to play their respective instruments but it seems Ike they decided that afternoon to try out some "jazz jams" but there's something missing big time. Swing? I don't know but something missing

    • @mwhite6522
      @mwhite6522 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@randywest1185 What else is it? They don't swing. At all. I don't think this music has aged well at all. It sounds like appropriation of Black music, pushed through the memory of someone who never bothered to learn anything about the jazz language in the first place. I guess you could also call it jazz for people who hate jazz.

    • @randywest1185
      @randywest1185 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@mwhite6522 That seems a bit harsh. Jazz is always about experimentation. His music is in no way traditional of course, but that's good. He's aiming in the same direction that Mingus was - eclectic, free-form. To get a sense of what might have been had not that damned tick brought his musical career down, listen to the Berlin 1991 concert. Far more sophisticated and subtle than this here. A lot of growth is evident. Jazz needs a lot more John Luries, not fewer.

    • @mwhite6522
      @mwhite6522 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@randywest1185 This music has nothing to do with Mingus or any pioneers of post-bop and free jazz -- it's a bad imitation of it. The harmonic language used by this group in this video is at about a college freshmen level, and to any serious student or player of jazz, it's clear that Lurie spent zero time actually listening to jazz and learning what jazz is, and it also sounds like he wouldn't be able to improvise over the changes of any basic standard. His tone is weak and saccharine. This is a very poor imitation of Mingus's 1960s work, if that's what he's even going for. This band is out-and-out cultural appropriation combined with expensive attire and a hipster attitude. Not much else. It's more about appearances than what they're actually playing. It sounds to me like Lurie heard jazz one day and decided "Oh, I can do that," but he never bothered to study or learn the musical language -- it's an imitation.

    • @randywest1185
      @randywest1185 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@mwhite6522 It's clear you're passionate about your jazz. Cool. But Lurie's music, whatever you might call it, works for me. I can hear where he was going and I understand what he was trying to say.
