Omg yessss, I used SendmyBag when I studied in London! Sent a huge suitcase for about $100. Soooo easy, and I will def use them again this fall when I start at LSE.
I’m about to be a Junior in college and I’ve been looking into studying for my Masters in London. You’re vlogs have really been inspiring and helpful ❤️
Send My Bag is great! I used it when I moved back from Barcelona to London, I sent 2x suitcases and a small IKEA sofa ( back in its box obv). Also, DHL who i think do the actual shipping bit, they accidentally sent my stuff express even though I only paid for standard shipping, so my stuff actually beat me home even though we both left the same day.
Paige - thank you so much! This is incredibly useful ... I am planning my London move from Canada, and you have saved my Mum and I so much because of your candour and generosity! Thank you!
Love your videos girl! I'm applying to UK Phd programs (I'm American) in the Fall for 2021/2022 and your videos have helped me through my decision!!! Btw when my mum ships things to Jamaica, she ships them in a barrel not a box! The barrels don't get damaged!
I used to work for a moving and storage company in Massachusetts 25-30 years ago. I would help people ship their personal effects in and out of different countries going from Massachusetts to Europe coming from Africa into Massachusetts Etc the cheapest way at the time was to put somebody's personal effects on a container ship that's crossing the ocean back and forth all the time. It would have been better for you to just buy new clothes in the UK. Think of this as a price of a good education and you are letting others know this! Let's say whenever you want to move out of the country you can take a car with you pretty easy grom the USA but if you want to move BACK to the USA and you wanted to bring a car back, this country makes it really hard bc they want you to go out and BUY a new car here! The UK would rather you buy new merchandise in their country that's why their prices are so high for Customs, shipping,Etc. Same with the US...but there are bargains out there! If you can get your stuff on a container that's not full, has extra room on it, you can cut costs with the owners of the container and the shipping company does all the work for you. Sorry you guys had to spend so much money! My mom would have done the same thing. But you know what you're saving so many people a lot of money by having them watch your video about it!⚘💲⚘💲⚘💲
Wow your mom is truly the ONE for not even hesitating to send you your stuff lol - my mom would’ve walked out and left my packages behind like NOPE lmao. So sorry to hear you went through all of this but GIRL thank you for posting!!!!!!! I had no idea that would’ve been the case by just using our regular services state side. When do you plan on making a video about your visa application process though? I’m super duper curious to hear about that.
So sorry you went through this. In the future if you are flying back to the UK from US look into how many cases you are allowed from economy class to premium economy class flights. Sometimes if you get a good rate premium economy isn't much more but you get 3 cases versus 2 which may be less expensive than shipping. At least that was the way it was a couple years ago. You might know this already but I thought I would mention it since you are going back for the wedding. Have fun in Dublin! :)
Lol...for a second when u saw the title, I thought you were going to state that you regret coming to London to study. I feel bad for your mum that she had to go through that stress to send your stuff. Such a loving mother. My mum would’ve done the same thing. Glad you finally sorted it out.
Thank you so much for sharing! We all make mistakes, especially financially. Stress is real and our research for a company has been real. Sending you blessings! - Shana
and guys! also online shopping, be wary of thinking you might be saving costs because an item is cheaper in the US. Next thing you know, you get one of these customs letters and it amounts to being more than what you would have paid over here in the UK. Bought some postpartum things from the US from Etsy. Had to just not pay the customs in the end just like Paige. The seller didn’t normally ship to the UK, she did it as a favour for me. So in the end, didn’t even ask for the money back, she was so nice, felt bad to approach her again. Moral of the story, only ship/order things under the customs thresholds. Or at least do your due diligence so you know upfront what the cost will be.
I knew shipping anything outside from England (Canada included too) is super expensive! Omg I never knew the process would be that difficult. I just learnt something new from your channel again
I’m so glad you decided to have your boxes returned to sender. That was way too much money for customs. I get my mail via the USPS on the military base in Kuwait, so I don’t have to pay the surcharges normally applied to international postage. After hearing your experience, I will stop complaining of the postal fees I pay. I’m so sorry you and your mom had to go through that, but thanks for sharing to the rest of us!
Hi! I just found your channel and can i just say... its like im having flashbacks. I moved from The US to london in september 2017 to attend university full time here in central london! Watching all these videos are so amazing to see because i wish i had my channel going when i first moved here to document and share my experiences with friends and family back home. so thank you for these videos!! Also shipping is horribly expensive.... i have to get some medicine sent here every few months and its so expenisve for just the smallest boxes its horrrrible. anyways thank you
Yes that's true. Us in the Caribbean receive stuff from overseas in barrels. It's pretty affordable. Well only Christmas time when local shipping lines charge more
omg Im moving to London from LA in a couple of months and this video just saved me so much stress and hassle! I was absolutely planning to use USPS lol. Thank you so much for sharing your experience! Cant wait to watch more of your videos.
Yes, Postal Service is a headache for International Shipping. A much better option for International shipping is DHL, UPS, or FEDEX, because they usually handle all the International clearing with customs and most issues that may arise with your International Shipment. Personally, I had packages shipped from a business vendor in Poland through the Postal Service to the United States several months ago, and it was a horrible customer service experience getting my package. And, it was my FIRST and LAST TIME ever doing business with that vendor again, especially after spending about $1200 with this particular Polish vendor through the Etsy website. NO MORE international vendor business for me, and I strictly deal within the good ole U.S of A .
I just wanted to say, right when you said why would I send my clothes when I could just buy new clothes at Primark, we said it at the same time. I'm glad you did this video though so that people can see how complicated this process is.
My mother done exactly the same thing when I was abroad in Japan! She didn't check with me either! I was furious too, as I told her what the expected price should be. If you don't know what's up these international shipping packages it can bleed you dry.
As someone in the uk I can say uk customs is awful They charge hundreds sometimes just to ship over clothes orders from America so I stopped even bothering to order from the USA I just buy stuff when I’m in New York and being it back
I’m giving you a huge thumbs up because that was amazing having to deal with all that. We think so much alike when we make huge mistakes and know that we could have done things different and better. I’m so glad you pulled yourself together and put on your thinking cap and worked everything out. I’m proud of you though, because you are a very intelligent young lady and I just know that you are capable of making good and rational decisions. So I’m so happy you worked everything out and then on top of that, you reached out to help others and that’s what it’s all about. God bless you. Have a wonderful day. Jean from Arizona 😊🦎🌵🌴🦂🏜☀️
Awwww I'm sorry that was such a crazy experience!! I studied abroad in South Korea last year and my dad sent me a tiny box for $80!! My reaction was almost the same as yours. But when I left South Korea I shipped two large boxes back home using the school's post office via "surface mail" and it only cost about 120,000 won which is $105! It took a lil over a month to get home but it was worth it because they actually arrived back in the US before I did haha
Don't ship goods to the UK or ant country. We have shops, thrift shops (charity shops) and markets. Buy your American treats from Amazon.co.uk. No import tax or shipping and next day delivery. Overseas students, stop throwing away your money. Preach Paige - fantastic advice.
I want to thank you for your London Vlogs. I live in Chicago and was thinking of going to school in London. For now, though I'm hoping to go for my 36th Birthday around November. Also, have you tried Borough Market? It's a big cooked food market. Like street food.
Thank you for sharing this valuable information. I am glad that you posted this information so that others will not have to pay the high cost of shipping. You are a remarkable young lady and I wish you all the best. Glad everything worked out in your favor.
One thing Paige also that people don't realise, USE PLAIN BOXES if possible. I myself shipped from the UK in some old used Amazon Boxes to South America & at the other end they just assumed it was new Amazon.com items and charged import duties appropriately instead of for gift items that were inside.
Damn that sounds like a terrifying ordeal. I woulda freaked out too! Good thing you got it sorted out in the end. My mom sends packages to her relatives in Japan frequently and we learned early on how crazy customs can be 🙄🙄
I'm so lucky when I shipped my stuff from Japan to the UK they didn't put custom charges on my boxes. I would have been livid as I wasn't returning to Japan! I would have been forced to pay it. I valued my boxes as 2000yen each, roughly £20.
Hello, just wanted to know where you got your custom necklace from with the year on it? I've ordered a custom name before but it tarnished, yours looks great. Thanks in advance & keep up the vids & good advice (I'll live thru your experience in the UK lol) love & light
Here in the UK if you mail something internationally they ask you not just what the value of the items are but also what the items actually are (not just internationally but internal mail too, I think under anti-terrorism legislation). It sounds to me as if maybe that doesn't happen in the US? I mean if your mother had been asked to declare what the items were and said "old clothes" then the post office worker would have surely questioned the high values she'd stated? Oh well, glad you got your stuff but what a horrible learning curve! :(
We shipped a package to my son last year during his study abroad in Germany and it took months ---then ended up circling all the way back to us! What a nightmare.
I can't believe your mum paid so much. I run a small business and regularly ship items to the USA. When you go home, send your stuff back by One World Express ( you can access them through the Parcels2go website). I pay around £40 for parcels weighing up to (9.9kilos - just over 20 pounds weight) It works out cheaper with any international delivery service if you split 50 pounds of stuff into 3 boxes of 20 pounds or less. This is because the fees really jump up (practically double, or even triple) for parcels weighing 10 kilos or over. They also sort the customs out for you depending on what you are sending. You shouldn't have to pay anything on personal effects by the way.
Man!! Shipping ain't no joke. Mom was not knowing. I ship packages to my subscribers and I have to space packages out. This past holiday season I spent over $150 in postage 😩 That was the first thing I thought of (Return to sender). So glad you were able to research a much better solution. TFS 💜 👍 #7
Oh my God! I don't know how we missed this video. How crazy! 400 pounds?!?! Yeah. Nope. Don't blame you. We'll definitely have to check out sendmybag.com! haha

International shipping and released through customs is not a joke o $$$$!
That shipping ap still uses USPS for shipping. They probably are given a huge discount which they pass on to the customer. Good job.
They used DHL. I don’t think that’s the same as USPS
