Dr. J doesn't get a lot of credit for keeping the ABA and NBA afloat during the seventies and early eighties and certainly doesn't get a lot credit for being one the old time greats, but those who grew up watching him know how great he was.

There have been a few truly spectacular players going to the hoop in the history of basketball but none were smoother and more dominant than Dr J. His ability to soar, improvise, power dunk, and simply lay the ball in at impossible angles was second to none. I first saw Dr J when he was in the ABA on a UHF channel in the ABA playoffs and I was mesmerized by how he could finish at the rim above players much taller, it was incredible. The world finally saw Dr J on full display against the Blazers and Bill Walton in the NBA finals and his power aerial act was amazing. MJ and Dominique were awesome but they were not better than a prime Doc finishing in the paint.

Your comment has my unadulterated unmitigated full and complete support.
Sadly, I didn't get to see Dr. J until the NBA swallowed the ABA whole.
I drew the low card and grew up on the west ocean. For 5 years Dr. J was only a rumor.
But I did see his last 11 seasons with the 76ers.

I saw him play in Nassau Coliseum as a kid. It was the most amazing thing I have ever seen. He just floated in the air. In one dunk he didn’t come up or down but was suspended in the air for what seemed like several seconds. Dr. J will always be the greatest basketball player in my book. If he took 30 shots a game who would have the same stats as Jordan but he shared the ball. An amazingly humble man and a living icon. Also a believer in Christ Jesus. To God be the Glory.

NOBODY can do today the things Dr J did. He dunked over 7 footers ( the good ones of the past, not the nobody's of today) MORE times than any other player! It is obvious that most of the people in these threads have never even seen a 7'2" guy, more so to do a lay up in front of him! Westbrook or Lebron are superb but Dr J did all his staff against a packed defense were everyone was waiting to stop him! He was smooth and could really fly in the air having complete control of his body and aware of the defense. Most of his moves were his own and now every body can copy them. He made dunking an offensive weapon and mastered it like no one else. Todays NBA is very weak. I am European and former bball player and we lough when we see clowns from Europe playing in the NBA. Some of them don't even make minor teams in Europe! Dr J , Wilt, Kareem, Hakeem, Russell and others would have a field day playing against them! Derrick Rose played 3 years ago with team USA in the Fiba World Championship in Turkey. See the videos of his performance! He was blocked and made more turnovers than my grandmother. If he is the leagues top guard then something is wrong in the magic world of the NBA!

  • @ShangoDC

Dr. J coming into the NBA with 76er's gave up a lot of his one-on-one game to blend in the team. I sometime wish the Net's hadn't had to trade him to come into the league. We would have seen even more than what we saw.

In 1976 when the NBA & ABA merged I was in 8th or 9th grade and getting the opportunity to finally to see the Dr. J was something of legend. He almost by himself saved the image and brought new life into the NBA. I don't care who is supposed to be better than who, because Doc was the standard bearer for the modern high flying era players that followed. He truly revoutionized the game in so many ways and that's his greatest contribution. I've still not seen some of things he did duplicated.

Sure, he's good; but Dr. Chapstick was probably better, or at least equally as good. Their styles are extremely similar, and J stole a lot of Chapstick's innovations.

  • @WobblinGoblin1
    @WobblinGoblin1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Julius Erving started out his ABA career as a tidal wave: brute force imposing its sheer will on anything in front of it, especially during his years with the Nets. Like a wave, he wasn't particularly refined, just fast and powerful and no obstacle could slow his onslaught.
By the late '70s (and a year or two after being traded to the '76ers) however, he morphed into a magician. Sure, there were still elements of power in his game, but his new refined style was so visually appealing, so smooth, so unique in basketball history, that you almost didn't notice the strength.
While he and Michael Jordan are often times compared to one another, it's often for the wrong reasons. The similarity between the two comes from Jordan's two acts, just as Dr. J had two. Jordan started out looking like Erving's magic act, with acrobatics and highlight reel moves. Since he played during the tail end of Dr. J's career, the basketball universe naturally established a link between the two, a passing of the torch between the two players. As he grew and aged, Jordan also morphed his game. Interestingly, his metamorphosis was almost the exact opposite of Erving's: he went from an on the court magician to an unstoppable force. Sure, there were still cool moves to his game, but it wasn't about acrobatics anymore, it was about imposing his will to win.

When he was on the Nets in the ABA he was devastating. Only person similar before him was Connie Hawkins.

you do realize that this man was the Michael Jordan of his time. The man scored over 30,000 points and led his team to a championship and was a perinial all star. That my friend is not being overrated. In fact, all of Michael jordans moves came from dr j. you my friend don't know shit about basketball. you probably think that a free throw is something you win in a ticket drawing

A 30,000+ career point scorer and 3x champion is less skilled than an 8 pt/gm player for 6 teams as a 10-day contract/waiver-wire nomad . . . halfway through restating your argument I've already given ample proof of its silliness. If perceptive, you would see non-fast-breaking examples here and use common sense to figure 30,000 probably involved a couple moves to the basket. Sorry you can't tell the difference between TH-cam clips & reality. Hey, your waste of time prediction was right, though.

Dr. J embodied grace and style on and off the court. He invented the 'posterization'! I am an NBA fan because of him, I still have news clippings and magazines from the 70s and 80s. I think the reason I am such a Kobe fan is because he has that refined game that makes the most routine jumpshot or layup a thing of beauty. Jordan with all his athleticism had more of 'nasty' game. The players I always liked the most were smooth: Kareem, Gervin, Olajuwon, English, Magic, The Doc and KB.

I see TOTALLY where Jordan got his moves from. Funny how it becomes a full circle and evolution of the style they played. DR. J, then Jordan, Then Kobe, and now LeBron. Jordan of course.....mastered it.

In my life time the first "leaping" NBA player was the great Bill Russell. But Dr. J was the first player I recall to achieve serious hang time. I was in college watching with friends the famous jump across the lane shot from behind the board. It was mind blowing at the time. We truly had never seen anything like that. Still my favorite basketball memory.

Sad thing is the NBA never got to see "THE REAL DR. J". Doc admitted that his best days were behind him when he entered the NBA as far as grabbing a rebound and going the length of the court for a dunk..His knees weren't what they once were...Scary thought.

@187murder1000 i agree. i was blessed to be able to watch the dr as a teenager back in the late 70s early 80s. he did things players today can't do, not blake griffin, lebron or d wade. nobody was smoother or cooler on the court than the good dr.

I would put Dr. J in the top 10 because what we see today is built on his creations. Much of his court magic was never documented in film.
