    I still have a 2008 Mac that works, iLife was amazing! iMovie and GarageBand were lightyears ahead of Windows at the time, I'd bet Apple is largely responsible for a lot of creators beginnings. Love your channel!

      yeah, i downloaded it recently from apple's website, where they still host downloads for it for whatever reason. however, it asked for a serial number, but i couldn't find any online.

    It's worth mentioning that iWork itself also grew out of ClarisWorks/AppleWorks, which was a similar suite of applications for classic macOS (which in turn were based on AppleWorks from the Apple II series). Numbers actually still feels a lot like I remember the AppleWorks spreadsheet working.

    There was a tool called Front Row. It featured a shared gui for both audio and video and was bundled with a remote control and some devices (Mac mini) so could have a media player and Apple TV without sitting at a desk. Gone several years ago.

    I remember (and had) both disc versions of iLife and iWork on a 2010 Macbook Pro. Never saw much utility in iLife, but both Pages and Keynote let you create much more beautiful documents and presentations than anything Microsoft was offering at the time.

    I remember iLife very well. I got my first Mac in 2008. I want a Mac since I was about 12...finally got it at age 37.
    That white plastic MacBook was amazing and I even blogged to iWeb. Not only did OS X set Apple apart from Windows but the iLife Suite and Mobile Me (along with iPhone 3G) just added even more value on top. It was a glorious tool set that let you do so much and make the Mac a home productivity machine like no other.

    My first own computer was Apple Powerbook G4 and later I got iLife 'O5 for it. Garageband was really fun software and iMovie HD was a really easy-to-use video editor. My later computers have been Linux or Windows PCs so I have tried to find a good alternative to iMovie but all other video editors have been very annoying to use even though they have had tons of more features than iMovie HD had.

    This brings a smile to my face! I remember all of those things. Actually, that's how I remember Mac, since I was one of those who grew up with it and then "switched" the other way, in 2011. Well, I had to go back to my Mac for certain stuff for a couple more years, because I was so well-versed with the software. I particularly remember how they butchered iMovie in one of the releases, making the timeline non-linear. That's when I stepped up to Final Cut Express.
    Came to think of AppleWorks as well, so I went to see if I could find footage of it. You don't happen to have made a vid on it many years ago? Because it sounded so much like you, haha. Cheers!

    Thank you, for this excellent "Blast from the Past" video. However, as an Apple computer user since 1996, I still live and operate mostly in the past, when it comes to mac desktop and laptop systems. All computers in my collection able to run a version of OS X, each have an installed copy of both iLife '09 and iWorks '09. What, I enjoy the most about the '09 software versions is that they work perfectly well on both Apple G4 and G5 Power systems and on Apple Intel systems (smile...smile). If you have not done one already, please do a look back at my favorite Apple photo editing software called Aperture (smile...smile).

    I HATE iCloud & Apple's constant nagging for me to buy more storage & that my iMac stores every video on my hard drive or now where ever it stores in on my Silicon M1 Mac mini.
    Applecare & I spent 4 hours trying to find just WHERE my videos were being saved on my 2010 iMac so I could deter them as all the extra videos were filling up my hard drive.
    I cannot get my Mac mini to recognize my external hard drive to move photos and video to them yet it knows if I disconnect them which is nuts.

    That bit with Steve Jobs doing a post-mortem of the suboptimal MobileMe release is really interesting, that kind of self-reflection sounds like it played an important role in how they constantly evolved. I wonder if Apple still has that kind of culture today.

    • @drygnfyre
      @drygnfyre 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In 2012 (after Jobs died), Tim Cook fired Scott Forstall due to the Maps fiasco. They did a similar thing where they basically put out a PR statement about how it wasn't up to their standards. And while Jony Ive did voluntarily leave Apple, there's rumors that the infamous butterfly keyboards might have played a role in that decision. So Apple does seem to still admit defeat on occasion.

    Back in the day, getting the iLife apps was a great deal. Garageband and iMovie were especially cool and were instrumental in the early days of web content creation back when most people on TH-cam were just teens playing around on the family computer. Without free and easy to use tools like that, making videos online would have been much less accessible.
