  • Karl, or in his Korean name, 권민규, started learning Korean with Talk To Me In Korean back in 2014. After about 2 years of self-studying and 9 months of studying abroad in Seoul, he is very fluent in Korean now. So we sat down with him to ask him some questions about how he studied. That is some amazing diligence and passion.
I did it a lot slower
(10 months) but did not only limit myself to TTMIK (even at the start).

I think the biggest problem with non-native English speakers who are learning Korean is that most apps or books etc. are all in English which makes it hard to then translate it to your own language. especially grammatical English words. Most of the time I have to look those up which can be frustrating and times and makes learning go way slower..

Thank you TTMIK for conducting this interview of 민규! It is very inspiring. I have been learning Korean for two years now and have made very little progress because I am also working on getting 2 bachelor degrees and working. Now that my university career is winding down and I will be graduating soon I will have more time to dedicate to learning Korean before I move to Korea in August to teach English. I discovered your books and lessons only a month ago and have learned so much more through the first few lessons of level one than any other resources I have tried. 민규 has inspired me to try harder to make time for language learning! I also watch 런닝맨 to listen to how words are naturally pronounced! Thank you guys for offering easy to understand, and quite affordable, books and workbooks to those of us studying on my own. I have recommended your lessons to a friend who just started learning Korean and she loves them!

I just started using the ttmik lesson books and workbooks. I think they're great and so far Korean has been a lot easier than Spanish (which I took for about 5 years in school but didn't really retain much). But it seems Korean vocab and grammar just stick in my mind without much effort so I'm liking it lol

This is great. Just a reminder that we all learn in different ways and absorb information differently...some might be quicker, some others slow..as we say in the UK slowly but surely the goal comes nearer. Thank you

Really appreciate this video. I've been studying off and on for at least 2 years and I have yet to even build a complete paragraph. I just started TTMIK a few months ago and I'm loving the books. And I listen to the lessons on sound cloud every morning on the way to work.

Late to the party here but my name is also Karl, and I started studying Korean with TTMIK two weeks ago today, which is September 23, 2020. 9/9/2020 would be my start date and my 한글 master book (along with the 500 Korean verbs book) arrived just today. Looking forward to really digging in to learning Korean!!

우와. 정말 잘하시네요 ! 저도 아마 2013년 부터 TTMIK으로 한국어 공부 시작 했는데 아직도 조금 밖에 못해요 ㅠ 2일 전에 Hellotalk 처음 해봤어요. ㅎ 민규씨처럼 한국어를 잘하기 위해 더 열심히 해야돼겠어요. 모두 TTMIK으로 공부 하는 사람들 파이팅!

It’s been about a year for me, I started TTMIK maybe half a year ago and I’m at level 8 now! It’s so easy to listen to while I’m walking or doing chores or traveling. I’m doing a lot of the same things as Karl (kpop, dramas, variety shows, HelloTalk, trying to find exchange friends, etc - also I like listening to Korean radio shows on the TuneIn app). But smoothly thinking on the spot while talking is still very hard, 여러분 화이팅! Good job 민규씨, an inspiration for all!
