    1. trackpoint - present
    2. dock - get usb-c dock/hub
    3. repairability - last thinkpad with dual battery (external one is hotswappable I think?), RAM not soldered
    4. livestream - it has 8-gen intel cpu (4 cores) might be enough? dunno

T480 user here, yes the external battery is hotswappable.
The keyboard is trivial to replace too, I think you can even find a custom one with the classic style.
The downsides of this Thinkpad is that the USB-C ports are soldered on the motherboard (even Macbooks have replaceable USB type C ports) and the fact that there's no coreboot for them yet.

@@itsnothimorisit Absolutely, was a bit of a switch from the 7- to the 6 row keyboard, but sadly there is no external 7 row anymore. And I, including many users, like to have the same keyboard layout between docked and undocked, plus you can also use it with a more powerful desktop aswell.
Only downside is, coreboot will never happen and the aspect ratio is still 16:9. I mean, doesnt have to be 4:3, but 16:10 is a good compromise, even those dorks at apple got that.

Sorry Luke, but your options are very severely limited by the Trackpoint requirement. I ran into this problem myself and had to end up compromising with my current computer (System76 Lemur Pro). I believe the Trackpoint is patented and so Lenovo is the only company that has them other than Dell's knock-off (which they seem to have killed off recently).
If you're ok with buying a questionably sourced chinese hack-thinkpad, I would look into XYTech and his X2100 and X330 models. They're both based off of the X2xx series of thinkpads, but with modified 3k x 2k screen resolution, and a custom-built motherboard running a modern processer in the X2100s case and a re-soldered upgraded sandy bridge processer in the X330s. He also offers Coreboot on the X330, and last I talked to him (over a year ago now) was trying to port Coreboot to the X2100s motherboard.
    Good Luck with your search!

This problem reminds me of a solution: distributed computing. Back in the day, computing centers had "big irons", and the workstations were just a graphical terminal, and when more power was needed, the big iron would get upgraded (storage, CPU, RAM, ecc) and the workstation continued to work.
This was the idea behind Plan 9, and the forerunner UNIX v8 + Blit predated this, influencing also commercial UNIXes and their window systems (X11, NeWS).

I would personally recommend a Dell Precision 3510 for your use case. It has a trackpoint, support for a normal docking station (none of that USB C nonsense that replaced them, although it does have a thunderbolt 3 port so they work if you want it), plenty of power - 6th gen quad core i5/i7/Xeon E3 and a AMD FirePro W5130M GPU (if you choose to get the one with the dGPU). There is an option for a 1920x1080 display, do get that one as it will have significantly better colour accuracy. This machine doesn't have mSATA but you do get a 2280 NVMe slot and a 2.5 inch drive bay so that more than makes up for it. The microphone and webcam should be fine too. Streaming shouldn't be an issue at all given how powerful the specs are. These laptops shouldn't be too expensive these days with them being a little older, parts are readily available for them and they're pretty damn powerful especially considering how thin it is.
I wish I had gotten a 3510 over a 3520 when I chose my new laptop, unfortunately it dropped the traditional docking station and if you go with the bigger battery (like I did) you also lose the 2.5 inch drive bay. Otherwise, the laptops are very similar.

“1. The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. They have greatly increased the life expectancy of those of us who live in “advanced” countries, but they have destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and have inflicted severe damage on the natural world. The continued development of technology will worsen the situation. It will certainly subject human being to greater indignities and inflict greater damage on the natural world, it will probably lead to greater social disruption and psychological suffering, and it may lead to increased physical suffering even in “advanced” countries.”

Hey Luke, I don't want to be an a*hole, but I think your requirements for a machine are kind of complicated to have on a single finished hardware (repairability and trackpoint alone would be rare on laptops). If you already have equipment for the usability you want perhaps a mix of local-level virtualization and external access would be more interesting.
    My tips:
    - Good streaming to current standards may require some very specific GPU and Internet adapter (not expensive or rare, just not any kind of component), you can keep modifying thinkpads (or any other laptops) but sooner or later you will hit a performance limit for this.
    - If you want repairability and performance I highly recommend a desktop computer, and if you want decent audio any chinese bluetoth lapel mic (like the e60) will beat your onboard mic.
    - If i had your hardware i would test everything to see what can i still use (like hard disks), buy a used hardware close to a 4460 Kit with RX550, install Proxmox and just connect to the environment with the hardware i already have.
    - Docks for specific hardware are rare, USB-C hubs aren't.
    - 1080P Monitors are cheaper and better than laptops with 1080P screens.
    - Your laptops can be as fast as your virtual machine image.
I could say to buy the T480 but sooner or later you will have the same problems.
    Good luck

Don't know if you're still reading these, but a Thinkpad T430 sounds like it would be perfect, specifically the version with the Nvidia NVS 5400m graphics card. You can buy a dock for it, it has better specs, and its even more upgradeable than the x220 (you can even change the cpu out to a quad core one, and if you dont like the keyboard you can change it to the older style one they discontinued in 2011)

Newer processor plus better graphics. Lower power consumption.
    Works with docks.
    16 gigs of ram.
You can put in 3 drives.

I used to be big into using trackpoints with my older Thinkpads, but after upgrading from an X220T and W701 to a X270 and P71 I've found myself using the trackpad more often instead, the trackpads are horrific on the older thinkpads so you're pretty much forced to use the trackpoint.
The trackpoint is still very useful on the newer thinkpads and something i would choose to keep but i could live without them

As others have said the t480 thinker would be a good choice. HOWEVER, I'd argue that the one of the desktop replacements like the P50 might fit your needs better.
1: Has wonderful trackpoint (as all thinkpads should), it also has emergency physical middle mouse button.
2: Has a dock with every port you could imagine
3: Very reparable, it has 4 ram slots, two are exposed to the underside door while the others are hidden under the fairly easily removed keyboard
4: Beefy quadro GPU perfect for encoding streams, however, it is nvidia, perhaps it would be better to look at an all AMD thinkpad, I haven't had much of an issue playing around with display drivers though.
5: 1080p is no problem, could get the option for 4k but you take a hit to the already slim battery (as a side note, I can get about 6-8 hours when I don't activate the quadro)
6: unfortunately no coreboot at this time..
7: the p50 actually has 2 msata bays (though you need a small adapter) and there's even an spot for an SSD too
8: I have not personally tested the camera and mic..
See Louis Rossmann's video review if you want to be further red pilled on the desktop replacement side of things th-cam.com/video/ig3xI8dUdm0/w-d-xo.html

The X270 seems to hit all those conditions you require.
I own alot of laptops, the best and most practical one i own is definitely the Thinkpad X270, it is the last generation to still have a docking connector, upgradable RAM and a removable hot swap-able battery, but is also the first generation to have NVMe support and USB-C, you can also charge it through the USB-C port meaning you only need one charger for all your devices. 8 screws will completely remove the bottom cover giving you access to all the important stuff, has one DDR4 ram slot that is upgradable to 16Gig, You have the option of using a 2.5 inch HDD or SSD or a NVMe drive if you have the correct caddy for it. It also comes in 1080p if you can find it and has 4G LTE as an option.
The biggest downside is that it doesn't have the old style keyboard, but the Thinkpad Retro 25 is the same generation as the X270 so it may be possible to hack that keyboard onto the X270, I've yet to see someone try though.
Another downside is that although it can be docked to a standard docking station i am not aware of docks like the ultradock that the X220 has for the X270, i believe it just shares the same dock with the T470.
It's from 2017 so parts are cheap and still readily available, shares alot of parts with the X260 and X250.

Hi luke, please consider the **dell precision M6800.**
    It has a trackpoint,
is extensibility upgradeable, has tones of ports and a bottom connection for a dock or a slice battery (I think you won't need it because it comes with so much ports (it comes with dvi hdmi out ect already) it's gpu is upgradable and honestly, it comes with top of the line CPU support (for it's time) 4 cores 8 thread i7s from around 2013~ and a MXM gpu slot, which means you can put some crazy modern GPUs in there and turn it into a mobile workstation that's still up to date to this day. Since i am cheap I'm running a precision M4600 that came with an i7 2820QM. + a Quadro GPU (it's a old shitter one but you can upgrade it to something decent ) I don't recommend my cheapo option tho.
Did i mention even the 2010 model had a 1080 display?
and the Precision M6800 can be modded to have a 4k display?
Basically TLDR Good specs, Has a trackpoint, Amazing Cooling Repairbility and Upgrade path, it has everything you want except corebooot. You will only need this computer luke if you upgrade it. It also has bluetooth and other extra features (I think it might even have a simcard slot too.) it's top of the line and probably better than any thinkpad that tries to "challenge" it.
Please luke, don't fall for the /g/ thinkpad meme, this even has extensible storage, even being able to swap the DVD drive easily into large storage.
thank you if you read this.

The only problem i got with the dell though is that they're heavy as fuck and the battery life is kinda shit. Also that hardware is a good bit outdated. I wouldn't be too surprised if it'd start chugging on any modern website within 5 years.

I know it's outdated yes, bit i estimate a minimum it has a good 8 years left of being relevant in it. for him he could upgrade his GPU along the way to make streaming or rendering videos more bearable. I can completely agree with you Luke. However, the only modular laptop I've seen that comes close to the early IBM ThinkPad designs is the new Framework laptop which exceeds modularity of the ThinkPads of old. Sadly, it lacks a Trackpoint. Trackpads have greatly improved but "I get it" and you are not alone. You might have to forego the Trackpoint when mobile. Or settle for a newer mostly non-upgradable ThinkPad. There are no more traditional docking stations, they have been replaced with USB-C port replicators. You might wish to consider a small NAS appliance or home cobbled one that can run Linux LXD containers or FreeBSD Jails and ZFS. Sync your laptop data, websites and git repos to the NAS. SSH to the NAS containers. Or connect external drives to the port replicator.

    New 6 row keyboard

  • @speedyfox9080
    @speedyfox9080 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The T440p seems pretty ok for your use case. It is one of the last thinkpads that is repairable.
    1. TrackPoint: yes
    2. It has a dock
    3. Repairable: Yes, it is one of the last ones that is repairable you can even change the processor
    4. I haven't tested but probably you can do a live with OBS or ffmpeg
    5. 1080p is an option
    6. Coreboot/OSBoot
    7. Has MSata
    8. Mic/Webcam is decent IMO
Extra: Has a CD/DVD drive so you can change it for a drive caddy and have all your data in there.
    That's my recommendation.
I heard people talking about the T480. It is also good, but doesn't support coreboot and is pretty bad in terms of construction and repairability.
EDIT: If you want a computer to compile gentoo on, meaning something powerfull, maybe get an HP Dev One? It seems to also be pretty ok.

  • @Kyuunex
    @Kyuunex 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I recommend Lenovo ThinkPad T480. I have this laptop, therefore my recommendation comes from my personal experience.
    1. It has TrackPoint, yes.
    2. It is dockable, but with USB-C port this time. Lenovo got rid of the old docking connector, but USB-C is still fine.
    3. As it's a business class laptop, it is repairable. You can find almost every part on Lenovo's website and order it.
RAM is not soldered. Modern CPUs in laptops are unfortunately soldered to the board.
Unfortunately, there is no way around this unless you want to settle for an older laptop with an older CPU that barely lasts 2 hours on a battery.
    4. Livestreaming requires either a good CPU or the one that can do hardware acceleration with it's iGPU.
T480 has an option for both. While I recommend getting a model with the highest end CPU, if you can't, you could settle for hardware accelerated encoding.
    5. It can come with either, 768p TN, 1080p IPS or 1440p something screen. Mine came with 768p and I replaced it to 1080p.
    6. If you want coreboot, you either settle for an older, and slower laptop, like T440p, or find a manufacturer who manufactures and sells laptops with it like System76.
Unfortunately I have yet to find a System76 laptop with TrackPoint like input device.
That being said, you can still mod the T480 UEFI firmware, disable Intel Management Engine, remove WWAN whitelist, unlock advanced menus and etc.
    7. T480 has an extra M.2 slot that can take in a WWAN card. This allows you to put an LTE or 5G modem in it, if it does not come with it already.
That being said, if you do that, you'll also need to route antennas to the screen chassis and either get the Lenovo branded Fibocom L850-GL modem,
or mod the UEFI firmware to remove the whitelist and put (almost) any WWAN inside. For hassle free experience, get the one that comes with a WWAN card.
Some people also managed to put an SSD in it's place, but I am not planning to.
    8. T480 has the *best battery life possible in a laptop*, assuming you are using the biggest battery available for it, 72Wh.
It also has a hybrid battery system, which allows you to hotswap batteries on the go,
so you can keep multiple fully charged batteries in your bag and swap them as you need them without having to shut down or hibernate.
    9. There is an option for a backlit keyboard. Also, the keyboard has liquid drain holes in case you accidentally spill something in it, it has good chance of surviving.
    10. The webcam and microphone are fine, not amazing, as expected for a laptop.
    11. It takes in power through USB-C, which is somewhat universal, so you can borrow someone else's charger (if it's powerful enough) if you forget yours.
If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.

This isn't an answer to the computer question, but to the file sync question.
For years, I've had a desktop setup at home that has 6TB of storage. When I needed a laptop for personal use as I was travelling a lot, I didn't like the price point surrounding models that could house 6TB and I didn't want to buy another drive anyway if I didn't have to.
My solution was to write a script that automounts my desktop at home's Documents directory to a local directory using sshfs. Everything is setup with shared keys, so this appears seamless to the end user. You just open your machine from anywhere with an internet connection and your files are just there.
There are some quirks, such as, if you want to watch a movie on your laptop, you have to rsync it to your local machine first. The buffering over an ssh connection is terrible, but for most things I do, this has been fantastic. All of my machines now share the same Documenta directory that gets updated in real time.

Think pads are well designed. I have quite big hand and i can use right thumb to navigate pointer without moving my hands of keyboards, and left thumb to press big buttony "left click" on top of trackpad. Therefore I don't need trackpoint. Have you tried it?

    Thinkpad p52 is pretty good.
    1. It has a trackpoint
    2. It's a tradeoff, but you can get USB-C docks.
    3. It is better than other modern laptops. I've had it for three years and it runs fine with linux. You can change:
    - the battery
    - the drives (sata 3 and/or m.2, depending on the exact config)
    - the memory
It still holds up well mechanically after carrying it everyday in public transports for three years.
    4. You can livestream on it
I think the p50 still had the dock port, if that's important to you. The p52s is the slimmer version and probably has soldered RAM, so stay away from it. I think the p53 is pretty similar to the p52, but I don't know if the RAM is soldered or not.

I wanted to recommend the Framwork laptop due to repairability, but no trackpoint, so: No.
The other option would be the HP Dev One, which has a Trackpoint, but I am not 100% sure about the repairability points. It looked to be pretty easily serviceable for the most common parts.
With both you have USB-C and can use USB-C docks.

Since ThinkPads are now indistinguishable from other laptops, I moved from an X201 to a cheap used HP EliteBook 835 G7. I fully expected it would be a glued POS but was pleasantly convinced otherwise when I took it apart. Downside: no integrated Ethernet (yeah...), no more "real" dock, I now use their external G5 dock. I didn't intend for it to replace my desktop but I liked the experience and used it that way, with an external monitor for a while. I moved back to desktop for sit-down use, because I have better graphics on that, but for the kind of things you do it wouldn't make a difference. Get one of the models with a trackpoint if you prefer that, I did too but I ended up not missing it on mine due to the nice glass trackpad. I don't like the models which have rows of keys to the right of the return key, either get the one with no numeric or full numeric keypad.

I have my Linux OS installed on an 1TB portable SSD. I can just plug in the SSD to any machine (e.g., two machines in my home, one laptop in my dormitory at school, one desktop in my lab), and boot into my only OS. It works perfect for me. No need to sync anything. (Btw, you can also install a Windows into portable drive using WinToUSB)

You have no idea how bad things really are to expect even 1-2 of your requirements to be met by anything made after the x230. The T480 or workstation thinkpads are the only things remotely close to meeting yoir requirements, but modern thinkpads are soy.

Lenovo T440p. It has a docking station available, it has the trackpoint, you can repair it as in you can upgrade or buy the same parts as in:
    - Screen
    - keyboard
    - trackpad
    - ram
    - Storage
    - CPU
    - battery can be easily removed and changed
    - wifi card
    - 2.5" ssd or hdd
    - DVD drive
All of these parts are pretty easy to change. You need to remove the battery and then remove 4 screws and slide open the bottom case to access everything.
Even the motherboards are available on ebay same with cases. I am 100% sure that it can handle your livestreams too.
Now let's go through the "Dream" parts:
    - the screen is either 1336x768, 1600x900 or 1920x1080 and all of them can be changed to 1080p screen.
    - Coreboot is available
    - The webcam and mic are servicable and decent
    I Hope this helps.

Soldered RAM when the SSD (NVMe) is replaceable makes no sense with modern notebook computers. Both of my current notebooks have soldered RAM; it makes no sense and only contributes to e-waste if the RAM modules go bad.

If you need something - do it yourself.
Take Thinkpad T420 and coreboot it and install intel 3rd gen into it - something like i7-3740QM and install 16GB ram into it. Do not forger 90W power adapter.
Additional notes. T420 have FullHD matrix modification - you can intall 1080p matrix into it.
    Also it has msata.
This thing will have all what you described in you requirements list and will be more powerful than your x220.

i use multiple computers constantly at school (i have a quick setup script that installs git-bash and some tools). i have bash aliases to help with sync'ing:
gpa: finds all recently modified directories, adds, commits, and pushes
gua: git pull on all repos
this doesn't solve the "one computer to rule them all problem", but this minimizes the pain of sync'ing, and makes your data more robust.

    soo many things
    1. there's a ton of laptops that are repairable and have a trackpoint. they're usually business laptops. dell, hp, thinkpad. not a hard ask.
    2. any basic modern laptop will have the horses to stream, and will have a workable webcam / mic. not a hard ask.
    3. any modern laptop will have a usb c port, which means you can attach a 'dock'. not a hard ask.
    3. good luck with coreboot lol
    4. I never got used to trackpoints, but I use a qmk keyboard, and have a layer which turns the vim keys into mouse movements. its not amazing to me, but maybe give that idea a shot.
if I were to actually recommend laptops, it would be:
    1. a modern business laptop from dell/hp/thinkpad.
    2. an eluktronics/system76/chinese clone laptop, if you want horses.
    3. mnt reform if your hacker is bigger than your common sense.
    4. frameworks laptop if you like usb-c
honestly though, if I read between the lines, it seems like what you really want is a laptop that has a repair ecosystem that'll last 20 years, is built like a tank, has (more) modern hardware, and a trackpoint.
... sounds like you want an old thinkpad with newer internals. good luck I guess?
