"real" books don't matter at all. What matters is the message the writer tried to send to the readers. Paperback, pdf, .txt... it doesn't even matter. I can carry 1000 offline books in my pocket wherever i go + all the books available in the places that have internet connection.

The problem with that is when all your productive hobbies/habits are also on the computer. Art, music composition, coding, etc. It's something I've recognized is a real problem for me for quite a while now because all the passive and active hobbies are packaged under the same roof, and it's just _so much easier_ to engage in the passive ones.

80% agreed, but you are missing that people have differing amounts of self-control. It's a skill that must be learned. You can't tell people who haven't learned to command themselves "yo bro just stop", cause they won't. Some permanently online normies are really far behind in maturation and need to take baby steps. The average person also lacks some sort of life-plan and literally don't know what to do without their addictions. In response to this advice they might stare at the wall for a while and think to themselves: "Well, I tried being bored and it sucks. Back to easy dopamine hits."

    • @nolin7657
      @nolin7657 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

But you can’t teach people to develop self control, it’s something they have to figure out entirely on their own. So really the only advice you can give them is “just stop” and let them figure out exactly how they’re supposed to do that

What a blessing this channel is..
All your thoughts all you say is just a pill of what I was wondering from years of my life going on... I am 30 yo Polish male, husband to lovely woman, own flat own car own motobike, very well paid job,(BS job however...), loving parents, sister, family... All this and my brain is just refusing it. I feel I refuse joy of God's blessing I have! I feel No I mean NO HAPPINESS AT ALL
I remember playing Sims2 when I was younger. Once I did a family all was going well and so on. Sims were going to job and days już went by... That's right - I watched them just living day to day working, cleaning, washing, taking care of troubles to eventually see them dead at the end. I found out that damn they were only once in a life on vacation! They talked to each other like 2/3 times. I freaked out to thought that my life may look same in the future...
And here we are - I have same thing as my Sims. I almost do not know what I love. I do not know my self. I am just flowing with life being a good person but... not being a human at all.
Let us finally be Humans. In few weeks I am going to leave my job and change few things. I also started to read and watching clouds on sky. I cry sometimes fighting with chaos of thoughts thet go through my brain when I go off simulators like phone computer, social medias and so on...
I write this just to put it out. Whoever may ever read this - guys do not be afraid or feel week when you are depressed. It is not your fault. We live in a super complicated world and we ale Trying. We men we are made to try. To fail many time and to WIN when and what is the most important.

The only way to kick something to the point that it's not just denying yourself is moral commitment, though that moral commitment may take consistent strengthening. You can be 'free' of smoking or porn but without this it's just something you managed to avoid doing until relapsing again, it's not really dropping it. The best way to do this is convince yourself that it gives you nothing and isn't a loss of pleasure, because for most addictions this is true.

I find that I'm more likely to give in to temptations when procrastinating (the anxiety of not doing the things I need to do builds up, so I let myself go into escapist activities to ignore those negative feelings). What helps me is just forcing myself to do my work (even if it's not gonna be my best work) and taking walks outside. When I've done my work for the day (even just some of it) I feel less anxiety, more at ease, more satisfied, and more in control of myself. The best time to work is immediately upon waking.
The tendency to keep falling into bad habits can have to do with how your four F responses (fight, flight, faun, and freeze) were conditioned during childhood too, which unfortunately can persist into adulthood. For example, a freeze/flight type might tend to porn and other isolating activities. A couple of great books by Pete Walker on this (CPTSD).

This is not a thing of logic, but of emotional state, which cannot always be improved on your own, it depends on your social circle. This requires a lifestyle change and people do need help navigating this change.

Rather I suspect it's brainfog and fatigue from being overstimulated by the technology we're surrounding ourselves with every day, complimented by the lack of willpower or drive to complete a set of goals. We should separate ourselves from technological stimulation atleast once a week so we can contemplate in silence.
I read from someone that most people have about 20-30 thoughts througout the day in total, and that if you can't sit still and entertain yourself with just your own thoughts for an hour you are probably dumbed down mentally and spiritually from said constant overstimulation (distraction, escapism).

Especially the part where Luke says if you're doing something you know to be bad then it means you don't actually consider it to be entierely bad. It is such a bright idea! It helped me stop following the wrong path. I've finally managed to fix most serious problems in my life and Luke's advice have been of great help in that process. Interestingly, studies where people were supposed to suppress compulsive actions, like checking your smartphone, going on social media, etc...., show that people who actively take measures to prevent them from doing so are more successful with this. That's probably a no-brainer, but the interesting part is that people who took those measures that made it easier to not do any compulsive actions performed better at various kinds of tests and tasks related to concentration.
Excerting willpower to suppress any kind of addiction/compulsive behavior is some kind of mental strain, meaning your brain has to work in order to do it. Since you can only actively concentrate for a given amount of time on a day, people that didn't have to muster up any kind of self-discipline in order to suppress compulsive behavior (i.e. people that locked away their phone, blocked porn sides and threw away the password to unlock them, etc. ....) had more mental capacities to work on something else.

Withdrawal symptoms of porn/masturbation are a hollow feeling, dejection and brain fog, leading to the need to fap/watch porn as nothing seems to make you feel right. Temporarily ridding yourself of this by sating the addiction is mistaken as 'feeling good' or 'relieving tension'.
You are not giving up pleasure by quitting, you are pushing through withdrawal. Cold turkey is the best way to do this, not thinking that you're resisting or giving up something, just deciding how it is and following through. Doesn't mean you won't fall into a behavioral pattern, such as thinking you just need to peek at some porn- the rest following from there, but this is trivial to catch and discard if you've solved the problem of resolve. If you're having a really tough time then you haven't truly made the decision to stop, and shouldn't bother deluding yourself, thinking of it as 'resisting', until you have made the decision to stop. Unironically don't bother actually trying stop without properly resolving to stop, it will just sour the idea of it because you'll relapse at the height of withdrawal or earlier and think you need to do it to feel good. Unlike most drug addictions, it isn't even that hard to kick this one because the withdrawal isn't so intense, the only reason it's a big problem is because we spend so much time on our computers and porn is so accessible and normalised that we're barraged with sexual material without even looking for it although it was already a problem with sexual material being everywhere with or without the internet.

Of course, simply stopping doesn't work in case of heavy addictions, that's where you need professional help. Also, addictions often arise due to other problems in someones life, solving the underlying issue is also needed. The exact same advice applies though. If you decide you want to stop and accept that you'll go through a few days of pretty serious withdrawal, you are 100% capable. Any time you light up a cig you're making a conscious decision to do so. You can make the conscious decision not to do that and understand what you'll be in for. People who try to quit smoking time and time again just never mentally commit to actually quitting. They always plan on smoking again I think, they just don't fully admit it to themselves. It's more seeing how long they can hold out for than actually deciding to quit.

I half expected Luke to recite Mathew 5:30. The passage may sound barbaric, but I remember when I heard it some time after having tried normie-tiered dopamine-fasts and removing myself from my sources of temptation and whatever, that it really rang true. For instance, living in an urban area today without a smartphone is in a lot of ways to live life a cripple compared to the rest. But such a life is far better than to let oneself fall into the temptations that it enables.
Today's dumbphones are still pretty smart, but they're way better for you and much cheaper than any smartphone.

I’ve come to know that there is a psychological issue with all these temptations.
Porn is often caused by feeling a lack of love. Not typically “sex” per say, but emotional security. Usually caused by parental resentment (mother who isn’t there for you; father doesn’t take interest) other times is frustrations with spouse (reasons can vary).
Video game addiction is typically found in people who lack ambition or is lacking in hope of future ambition(s).
Those two I can understand...there are other reasons for other additions

On boredom, I dont like being alone with my thoughts, I am violent by nature, I cope with writing which in itself is becoming self destructive. So I do nothing watch nothing, and either fuel my escapism with my story, or play out my thoughts.
I am someone who sits in quiet rooms by myself in my own head for hours on end, I am diagnosed hyperactive sitting still to do something is difficult, reading a book isnt as easy now because I think in pictures and my thoughts are fast, for a book to cement itself takes time and I dont have much a drive to waste that time waiting for it to be worthwhile, even though I can finish books like big books in hours to days when I am interested. But I can sit in a room with a prompt a single thought and spiral for hours without anything but floorspace to pace around, its chaotic often violent and usually dettached from reality or so set in my current life that its upset the person I was talking to wasnt in the room to hear it.
I dont struggle with addiction like you mentioned, social media is a problem but its a problem because I havent been able to see my friends outside what with the apocalypse, I play games, my bigger problem is spending then it is time, its something I relate to ocd and autism, I dont want to miss out, I want to finish collections, and I value money very little.
The addictive games are social because I lack socialising in real-life, I just cant go and see my friends as often as I would like so I play a game with voice chat and I get attached, those games are usually engineered to make you want to spend money which is where problems come in.
And I can leave, I have before, sometimes after the damage is done sure, sometimes before, I recognise the problem and I leave, remove myself from social media or the games that are trying to nickle and dime me.
But that lacks follow through, you're advice is leave and then it's fine, I am still lacking social interaction and now I am not getting it from facebook or whatever game I am playing, so I feel alone, those voices in my head louder now, I begin to feel isolated and that turns into paranoia and I start distrusting very close friends because something feels wrong and I can name it but I cant see it.
Your follow through seems to be god, and if not then its nothing, it's avoidance, domt buy cigarettes, the don't carry lighters, then don't walk through carparks or see friends who smoke avoid any temptation, its like how school prepares us for drugs with that shady ally dealer, ignoring that its usually your best mate giving you a hit at your first party... sure say no to drugs is a good way not to get on drugs but you ignored a huge piece of the puzzle to get that solution.
This is rambling, this is me dealing with boredom this is what I do for hours, sometimes actually writing something, sometimes just talking to myself and pacing, and I dont think your video is wrong, I think your attitude is off, dont do it is a bandaid before you develop healthy counters and resistance, avoidance is what you do to deal with withdrawal not how you live the rest of your life, what you need to learn is how to spot temptation, and how to respond to it, you need to develop these skills and train yourself to say no to those vices not just avoid them in the first place, because you avoid smoking, you have a shit day, sit on a bench, find a half smoked cigarette, and it doesnt take much for your mind to flood you, and if all you learned was avoidance you have about five seconds to leave that area before thoughts like 'It will make you feel better' start getting their hooks into you, and you have nothing except run as a response...
I dunno I stopped caring, I am mostly distracting myself from a runny nose at this point.

"it's stupid when people make that distinction"
when "stupid" people make that distinction, they're actually referring to the fact that smoking introduces an exogenous substance in their bodies, nicotine, and hence there's a dipendence on that substance that comes from an external source.
These newer kinds of addictive activities though, like watching porn or endlessly scrolling in social media, don't give us any exogenous substance that we can be addicted to. They just play with our internal hormones , like dopamine and serotonin, that your body naturally produces, inducing spikes and effectively "administering" you with substances of your own making.
That is the difference. Last century's addiction focused on giving you external substances, today's addictions turn yourself into the laboratory, the pusher, and the administer your own addictive drug. They only cut the distribution middle man.

I don't think every person alive has free will. Everyone is born with free will, of course, but making bad choices in life limits one's ability to make choices in the future. For example, one can't choose to be a competitive runner if one spent the last 20 years smoking 2 packs a day. Repeated enough, this can cause complete erosion of all free will. Such a person is a slave to his urges and he is unable to regain control.

Luke, I've been around addicts my entire life. I respect you, but this is a horrible take. "Just don't do it, you have the strength to just stop" is laughable. Rehabs exist because there are people that CAN'T do things by themselves. Sexual addictions are very real and have destroyed people's lives. Don't even get me started on when sex addiction gets mixed with meth (meth and porn activate the same parts of the brain). I know from firsthand experience with myself and with others that these solutions typically don't work. Simply giving up any devices with internet access is not feasible. We all find ourselves back in the same place unless we deal with the underlying issues behind our addictions. We can only run for so long.
One of the issues is you expect people to respond rationally, but addictions prevent your brain from thinking rationally. It's important to have good people around you and to be held accountable. If you are addicted badly enough, then you can't do it by yourself and those of us who have been there damn well know it even when we don't want to admit it.

If you don't take agency for your addiction you'll never be free from them, all of what you said is true, but it doesn't change the fact that to break addiction you need to take it one step at a time, and that you have the choice to resist temptation every single time you encounter it. Obviously when you're first getting clean outside help is important, but this is about staying clean. Support is vital, but so is taking responsibility and being honest about your choices.

This is a remarkably naïve understanding of human psychology. For example: why does drug use surge when incomes plummet? Well, I guess more people just randomly decide to take drugs out of their completely free will, duh. And if they wanted to stop taking them, they would just stop, duh.

This doesn't really match how human psychology works. Like maybe he thinks it's inspirational to frame it this way or he's justifiably salty about people who act like they really DO have no agency and that fixing their stuff is someone else's responsibility. But "just deciding" is kind of meaningless in terms of how addiction actually works
