Considering the fact that Metallica was on the very edge of splitting up during creating this album, James going to rehab, Jason already left the band, Lars and Kirk wondering alone if even Metallica still existed, it is a huge miracle St. Anger ever saw the light.
@@robertpfeiff Yes, and for this reason I think it is a very important imprint in Metallica's career. It is a document of that period of the band and I think we would be poorer without it. Actually I like this album for some reason.
When you are madly in anger with everyone and everything, you don’t even care about the mix at all, you just stick with it and it works perfectly! Great job! 🤘🏼🔥
A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica is probably the best documentary I've ever seen on making an album. So much information and great little details, like James cocking a real gun over the guitar riff of "The God that Failed" that you barely hear on the final song but you'd notice something was missing if it wasn't there. The Classic Albums episode was basically a shortened version of the original documentary with some added interviews.
Metallica have been playing Frantic, St. Anger, and Dirty Window live more frequently since 2019. You guys should react to one of those live performances and hear how different that sounds compared to the recordings!
While editing the video I came across the live studio rehearsals that came on the DVD of the deluxe edition of the album! I watched a little bit of it and was really surprised about how it sounded. The quality of the recording was awesome, and the performance was great!
At the time of its release, it was a such a devise album. You either love it or hate. I love all Metallica albums, but yes if I ranked the albums, this would be at the bottom. There are some good songs on here. Definitely Frantic, St. Anger, Some Kind Of Monster, Unnamed Feeling are the highlights. I will say they do an acoustic version of All Within My Hands and its great, and All Within My Hands is on S&M 2. As far as live Frantic and St. Anger are still put in the set list to this day
@DonkeyPopsicle yes it does have a solo now when played lived. And the live versions of these songs are actually really good. Matter of fact, headed to Dallas in 3 weeks to see Metallica on their M72 tour. Both shows are actually going to be live broadcast in movie theaters.
Clarification: The videos about the Black Album are called "A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica." It was originally a double VHS boxset. Tape 1 was about the making of the album, and Tape 2 was about the ENORMOUS tour they did to support it. There is also a show called Classic Albums that was on Netflix for a time, and they have an episode about making the Black Album, as well.
Yes. James and Jason had a fight about Echobrain while filming their episode for Classic Albums. James threateningly implied Jason could be replaced in Metallica. That was the moment Jason knew he was leaving the band.
there was a bonus DVD that came with the album which has the band performing the whole album in the rehearsal space, and it actually sounds better than the album
I’m a longtime Metallica fan, and I have enjoyed every video you guys have done. Your perspective on the music as audio engineers is unique, as opposed to average music listeners. I’m not bothered by the differences of opinion you may have on them. I actually find it fresh and fun. Honestly, keep it going.
There’s a version of “Some Kind of Monster” remixed by one of the Black Album / Load engineers, Randy Staub, called “Some Kind of Monster (Edit)” that sounds awesome. If anyone wants to see what this album could have been with great mixing, please listen to that. The arrangement is changed a little bit too in that version. Great video, as always! 🤟
I've just listened to it..holy fucking shit this album would've sounded INCREDIBLE! Only thing I don't like is taht it is missing the "OMINOUS, HIDES IN US" part (or whatever is being said there).. Don't understand that decision, that part is really cool!
This Edit version was released on the CD Single, it’s the version I remember the best! And I actually got a little confused when they reacted to the normal version in this video haha
"If anyone wants to see what this album could have been with great mixing," That would have ruined the entire point of the album. It's supposed to be raw and rough around the edges just like they were at the time.
Commented a couple weeks ago and mentioned I was working on my own version of St Anger, and I released it earlier this week. I also watched the St. Anger 2015 reaction, and I believe I made some improvements on that version as well. If you wanna check out St. [b]Anger then feel free to do so. I really do think it's a banger. :)
You should check out the bonus DVD that came with the St. Anger CD. Recorded right after Rob joined the band, they play through the entire album in the main live room of their HQ. Shows you what the album could have sounded like without being compressed to death and without the baffling drum mix.
I agree dvd version of the album so much better. Just buy the album throw the audio cd away and just listern and watch the dvd. Especially when kirk nearly falla over because hes rockin too hard😜😂😎🇬🇧 Lol
I wasn't thrilled with this album when it first came out, but after watching the SKOM Documentary I gained a whole new appreciation for it after understanding why and how it came about. IMO this is a therapy album where everything gets purged angrily out by every member of the band which is why it was mixed in such a raw way. I feel the same way in some respects to the AJFA album after Cliff's death. That album was therapy of sorts; I was in high school then and remember it wasn't necessarily met with the best reviews at the time (Even James has said in past interviews he wasn't happy with that album) but it has stood the test of time and some of their harder, better songs are recognized from it. It's the same with St. Anger. Granted, I still don't love several of the songs on there but there are more on there that absolutely rock. All in all it's a good album...but again, I appreciate it for what the band went through to create it. I think they definitely rebounded very well with their follow up Death Magnetic. We won't talk about Lulu.
The scrapped demo known as “Shadows of the Cross” that later became All Nightmare Long from Death Magnetic is pretty cool. It was recorded before James’ rehab situation. They wrote it in an old abandoned military barracks; only two songs made it to the album from those 2001 recording sessions. Some Kind of Monster & My World the rest of the album was done at their own studio (HQ). There’s even a demo from the Death Magnetic sessions called “Flamingo” interestingly enough, another version of All Nightmare Long.
The snare sound makes this record unique. Like the other aspects like "live" guitar sound, rough vocals etc. It hasn't any "precision", any feeling of commercial or tailor-made product. This is one of the most natural sounding album in the history.
I'm happy that you guys seem to agree that although this album may not be the best in terms of musical greatness, it's still damn fun to listen to. I love the rusty-toolshed-on-fire vibe that just eminates from St Anger. I saw some remixes where people "fix" the snare, but it sucks, doesn't feel right, it's like censoring a horror movie. Like I get it that it doesn't quite sound like Metallica, but they weren't themselves when they made it. I understand the negative reactions as to the moment it was released, because it was hyped up to be something entirely different before that. All these years later, it's like a remnant of a rough patch in Metallica's story. Even then, it kicks ass with how heavy it is. Great video, loved your takes.
Dirty Window is my absolute jam. So f'n fun. The whole album is raw and fun and I love it. It's heavy af. The lyrical content resonates so hard with me. Love love love the album.
Really great to see people go passed the preconceived notions to see this album actually has quite a few bangers. Surprised about the lukewarm response to The Unnamed Feeling, though. To me, that’s a top 10 Metallica song.
2:55:30 Those barracks they rented in 2001 (the Presidio) are not where they recorded the album though. That's just before James went to rehab, then they recorded St Anger at their new HQ in 2002-3. In the Presidio sessions, they recorded some weird demos, some of which went into St Anger (I think Some Kind of Monster and My World, for example), but also a lot of REALLY REALLY weird stuff. If you find St Anger strange, the Presidio Album (th-cam.com/video/4OUkEvznFyg/w-d-xo.html) shows a band at their absolute darkest time, doing some experimental weird things.
The plan was to take some time off after the 2000 tour ended, and start recording new stuff in 01. Then Jason left at the start of the new year, they tried those demos but nothing was really working, and then James' rehab stuff started
I've always felt like St Anger has some real diamonds in the rough. If it was rerecorded with James' current voice, normal drums and maybe a few solos sprinkled here and there, and it would be a great album
From what I remember hearing about, in interviews and stuff is that they jammed out this album all together, but they also found the best parts of each song and edited them together. Like instead of jamming out the whole song multiple times and taking the best version, they jammed out the song multiple times, took the best parts of each version, and mashed it together in the editing room, and that’s why you have such a differences in the chorus and verses and stuff like that because it will go from one jam session in the chorus to a different jam session for the verse. Know what I mean?
As someone who loves this album, I love this video! (and all your other analysis in general), even if I don't agree all that much sometimes your perspectives and commentary are really fun! I really enjoy these vids ya'll.
3:02:10 And the funniest thing is, the acoustified/orchestral version of All Within My Hands they did for S&M2 is, pardon my language, a goddamn masterpiece...
The guy that remastered this on youbtube with the green cover made this into one of the toughest albums I've heard. Also highlighted how each song had a moment of genius. The comments section was lit up with time stamps of each one.
You guys shouldnt write off Garage Inc. I think its one of the best sounding albums, and it has some really really amazing songs on there. Just not what you would expect from Metallica but that also makes it cool... Astronomy is amazing! The Merciful Fate medley sounds very Metallica though!
I’m so surprised how much you guys are writing of Garage Inc. It’s a really diverse album and is really well produced. And there’s plenty of metal on it. I really urge you all to listen to it.
Turn the page is an incredible cover and the video draws tears. Astronomy is one of my favorite songs of all time and the only thing that beats my hype for it is hearing BOC's "Imaginos" version. It's like receiving forbidden knowledge
Hey guys! I’ve watched all of the Metallica reactions and a ton of the rock reactions. You guys clearly make statements to poke fun at the fans and it’s hilarious. I agree and disagree with your takes all the time but it’s just fun to see your reactions and analysis to music I love.
The Unnamed Feeling is definitely my favorite song of the album. A bunch of other songs have great riffs but that’s my favorite song all the way through.🤘🏻
Yep. It’s heavy. It’s got a mood and ambience too it. It’s actually setting a tone and taking you on a journey, plus I like the music. Production sucks obviously. The cymbals splashing into everything is aaaaalmost too much to tolerate, but it feels like an actual bit of emotion.
This reaction gives me life. I keep coming back to it, especially All Within My Hands. Your reactions are hilarious and it was really fun to follow the abrupt EQ changes along with you guys (and your faces 🤣). A jarring record for sure.
As far as the snare goes it doesnt bother me like it did at first. Actually a lot of “brutal slam death metal” bands use that similar snare tone. Snares are definitely on, but they have them cranked so tight it gives it that ringy ping sound.
to me this is one of my favorite albums because while it sounds "weird", it works really well if you think that this album is the equivalent of a broken person, every song is a different kind of "dealing with this bad situation" or more like "not knowing how to deal with it"
1-Bob Rock (who also played the bass on this album) on the SKOM documentary: We wanted this album to sound like some guys playing a garage... In a great way, yup, they did it! 2-I read somewhere that Lars did not have the snare wires on by accident and he liked how it sounded so he decided to kepp it that way, we do hear them at the start of SKOM song, and that snare reminds me of Helmet's Betty album, but this one has way more ring! 3-Yup, as I read in the comments, seeing the SKOM documentary, you get why this album is some kind of special!. I am ashamed to say that perhaps like many? I was (AND still am! LOL) cought up in one of the greatest decades for music, the 90s! and from Alice in Chains, Soundgarden to Chemical Bros etc etc etc, when I saw the SKOM documentary, I liked it but I didn't pay much attention to the music! I JUST recently just HEARD this ST Anger album and wow!! I was blown away! so I saw the documentary again and bam! there's the explanation for it, raw, intense, no solos! soulful, genuine and 4!- Look up the St anger series of live rehearsals, sooo good too!
Its not my favorite album but it rocks. When you just want something different and raw this is a good album. Sure few songs are bad but there us some bangers on this album
Bro seriously, thank you for making these videos. I have watched through all of your metallica videos and i cant express how much i love watching these. Please dont stop. If you would like a nice suggestion for an album, I would say ”Time Is Up” by Havok. Trust me, this is the ”most” thrash metal band i have ever heard. They literally define thrash metal. So it would be cool if you check them out. Especially ”Time Is Up”. I would say that Havok is a mix between Metallica and Megadeth. So check it out! And when is the Death Magnetic album video coming out? Cant wait for it anymore! It is my personal favourite album by them (and most underrated ;) ). Once again, thank you for making these. Cheers
‘A Year & a Half in the Life of Metallica’ was a two part documentary from 1992. Half was about the black album studio stuff and the other was about touring on that album. It was a pretty good documentary actually. I have it on dvd somewhere…
You guys are amazing! Usually I would skip to the songs but I recently started to go back to when you first started reacting to Metallica and I would just sit through it and listen to all 3 hours of each episode while I studied/do work, I love watching your guy's videos, you guys deserve way more subscribers
Thank you! When we first started doing these Metallica reactions we got a lot of comments about how we were more like a podcast than reactors. And I actually like that! I always try to think of anyone who watches one of my videos as a friend that I'm having a discussion with...we might not agree on everything, but the conversation is the best part!
I just came across your videos today. A lot of the hate comments you get don’t make sense to me. The fact that people complain about you talking defeats the purpose of a reaction/review video. I greatly enjoy and agree with your opinions on mixing, mastering, etc; but your opinion on songwriting especially speaks to me. Resolution is key in music. Your points about Damon Albarns songwriting is so accurate. Well done and I look forward to future videos.
@@ranch-nachos thanks, and if you have time be sure to look around the channel! We have a lot of great videos that we are very proud of, including some great things coming up soon!
2:57:00 ...they rented the Presidio for the garage feel prior to James going into rehab. It never went anywhere, and when James returned, the album was done at Metallica HQ.
on the metallica youtube channel there are frantic and st anger live performances from 2019-2021 that sound really good, its 100% worth checking them out
I saw that while editing the video! I saw just a tiny clip of Frantic and I want to hear the whole thing now for sure! I will look for a deluxe copy of St. Anger and make sure that I get one that comes with the DVD!
Man, this whole video is just a feel good experience for me. I love this album, and I love you guys. Since you read the comments I'll let you know that I adore your interactions and every take you guys have makes me appreciate both the expertice you have and the music; I'm sorry your sincere part got cut off. I will legitimately pay you guys to react to Chicago, I don't know how well produced it is but I love almost everything they have ever put out. I want to say thank you for shouting out the sale going on with Metallica albums, I juat picked up my own copy of the self title because of it. If you could shout out any other nation wide deals in the community tab that would be awesome, it really doesn't have to be just Metallica either. I would like to watch a reation for ELO, I know its not metal but I would love to hear what everyone thinks of their music. Of course a Linkin Park reaction would be phenomenal as well, any of their early punk-numetal is fine but what I would really love to hear about is some of their later works. This comment is a rambling mess and for that I apologize, but in my defense alot was said in the video and if I made a comment about everything that came to mind I'd be typing a dissertation from now to next week. I want to say thank you for taking all the time you do to make these excellent video, they have made actually go out and buy albums I had always streamed; the difference in quality is astounding, something I had never really paid attention to. Anyway, I wanted to say I would love if you guys hit the theater and recorded a reation to the live shows; I won't be able to because I work both days it shows and can't take time off, but being able to watch it "with" you would certainly more than make up for it. Ramble over, have an excellent day/night, whenever you get around to reading this.
My cousin Cody and I have talked about doing a reaction to ELO and I think that will definitely happen! And I know I have heard a few Chicago songs over the years, but I can't think of them at the moment.
WOW, FOR THE FIRST TIME I SEE SOMEONE COMMENT ON THE KICK IN THE CHORUS OF ST. ANGER THAT'S LIKE AN ADDITIONAL KICK, I NOTICED IT THE FIRST TIMES I LISTENED TO IT AND IT'S REALLY GOOD!!!!
Knowing the circumstances behind the production of this album, it’s no wonder James’s vocals are the way they are. He sounds like he’s reached the limits of his endurance and is at the breaking point. There’s desperation and fear in his vocals most of the time, like things are changing beyond his control and he can’t handle it. Especially the last song. He hates the thought of losing control, even scared of losing control.
I’m the only other person on this earth who liked this album since it came out in 2003. Yes, despite the production, but man, the songs are just so fun, especially to play on guitar. Fun to sing along to while driving, too. Yeah the production is bad, but the drum playing is inspired and the riffs are SO good. The Unnamed Feeling is unironically a top 5 21st century Metallica song IMO. Even the production, it was a deliberate creative choice. Did they nail what they were going for? Depends who you ask. I like the album as-is. Though I’d love to hear a special release or something where they clean up the production and trim the songs ~20% or so as a curiosity. My hot take. The guitars here sound drastically better than Hardwired and 72 seasons which are undergained and have all the personality dried out of them. Thanks for the reactions. Still love ‘em.
3:17:10 The first album Alice in Chains they did with the new singer was in 2009 called Black Gives Way To Blue and the Album sounds great. Also Dirt was released in 1992, Their self titled albums released in 1995.
1:24:38 As I listened to this song a lot I realized that in this part there is a grunt as if it were James doing it, but I also think that it could be some different sound from one of the guitars, MYSTERIES (I love this part)
Keep coming back to this video because y'alls reactions to this are amazing. As far as Dirty Window sounding the "best" i think its because they were tuned up to Drop C# with most of the album being in Drop C or Drop A# for Invisible Kid. Glad to be apart of this community!
2:25:23 Never realised it until now, I guess because I'm slow, but "Sweet Amber" is about beer, which is basically a song about him processing his alcoholism, which is why he went into rehab I think just before this album came out? I don't think James had many drug issues, but he's basically an alcoholic. St Anger as a whole, is about him processing his demons which in this case, was alcoholism, and how he used alcohol to avoid having to face his demons such as anxiety, overthinking etc. He'd numb his thoughts and feeling so he wouldn't have to deal with them, and I guess this whole album is him forcing himself to feel it all, hate it all, and process it all. I love that the whole band was able to sonically describe what he was feeling through frantic noise. Anxiety, fear, anger, pain, that's some of the feelings the "Bad" recording induces in people which I feel was intentional to get across the feeling of trying to get off alcohol, and learning how to live life without that crutch, and learning how to live with pain, anger and anxiety without alcohol to numb you down. "Sweet Amber" seems like an ironic look look at "relief" (that only makes this worse for him) "sweet sweet relief" And now that I think about it, the fact that the Unnamed Feeling, a song about anxiety, follows the song about alcoholism is really fitting.
Loving you guys commenting. Ross here from Singapore, to me this is the best banger nastiest angriest rawness Metallica album of all time. When I received this album as a fathers day gift in 2003, it was the best gift ever!!
The artwork for the album was done by Pushead, who did art for a lot of their T-shirts and other merch throughout most of their career up to that point
The early recordings are called presidio sessions in that rented place. Then James went onto rehab, came back, and recorded the album at HQ. I believe they have used HQ for recording since...
This sounds like the remastered version, not enough snare! 1:38:34 - The left channel guitar at this bit sounds like it is slightly out of tune when it starts with a bend?? The Amber in Sweet Amber was about beer/alcohol. Seeing as this album was recorded as Jason quit the band and James went to AA rehab - kind of makes sense why it is all over the place and why much of it is about his alcoholism. 3:05:37 - Good ear my man! I can hear it now, had to do the fade in or out many a times in my songs to stop that click, or add a tiny bit of silence or delete the bit in question to have them overlap. Self taught in every way.
I absolutely love your full album reactions to Metallica your content is fantastic you guys are doing such a great job I love and respect your opinions keep it up loving it you guys rock 🤘
1:06:40 not to be a corrective ass but if you can hear the snare rattle that means the snare is off typically. When the snare is engaged it presses up against the drum head, muting the rattle that occurs when it is disengaged.
I'm watching these videos with some sort of delay, like a on demand podcast, and I literally gasped when you showed the Housebuilding EP. Patrick, you are a nerd!!!! You literally breathe music and I can relate to that!!!!

In case nobody has told you yet, the artwork on this album is by the same legendary dude that did just about every Metallica poster in the late 80's and early 90's. His stuff is always sooooooo damn coool. So many legendary t-shirt designs.
Hate train and 3 other songs were left over from the Death Magnetic sessions and were later released at the 30 year anniversary in the Beyond Magnetic ep. They are rough mixes but sound amazing in comparison to the album and are of the same quality
I must really like you guys. I've been avoiding this album like the plague. I've heard maybe 2 songs on it. I'm only watching it so I can react to it with you
@@PatrickMusilek ok. I don't hate it. There are some cool riffs and a couple other elements that are interesting. I do know that Lars' own dad hated it, and begged them to change some things. On the other hand I think that Lars could fart on a snare drum with James vomiting on the mic and Chris Parker would like it because it's Metallica. I don't think it's as bad as I was expecting and maybe if I heard it a few more times it would grow on me. But I think if it never existed we wouldn't be missing anything.
2:24:03 Sweet Amber is a a loose reference to beer and James' addiction to alcohol. On the surface, this song is about a girl and her dangerously addictive personality. In addition to being a girl's name, Amber is also the color of many beers, leading many listeners to determine that the song deals with James Hetfield's past addition to alcohol, specifically beer. But contrary to popular belief, this song's lyrics don't deal with Hetfield's addictions - at least not intentionally. According to the book This Monster Lives: The Inside Story of Some Kind of Monster, it was written in the spur of the moment after Metallica's label forced them to record commercials for their sponsors, hinting that they had to do it if they were to remain on good terms with the label: "Scratch your back so you won't stab mine."
Hello, special thanks for all the time you have devoted to this and other Metallica albums! Unfortunately, we didn't get to know much about the small things and insider secrets of the sound engineer, but it's still exciting. I have a fundamentally different opinion about the sound of this album, I love it. I especially love the sound of a snare drum without a wire!! This was a brave step by Lars, the sound is much more punk, more primitive, more honest! The album also plays very often, hits the listener in the head, the whole thing is booming. Unfortunately, apart from 3-4 tracks, the other tracks are not exciting for me, but not because of the lack of solos. frantic, st anger are good songs, they sound amazingly heavy live, I was blown away when they played them in concert. The highlight of the album, the perfect track, is SKOM, for me it's really Metallica. The other tension reliever is my world, it was a hit!!! I find it amazing that they were able to write a lot of songs for essentially the same pair of notes: E, F, G, A, Bflat, high E - completely different and fundamental, defining, it's unique!!
these were the most fun, interesting, educating, entertaining good 2 hours (I admit, I skipped a bit here and there) of a reaction to such a controversial record. I loved the "oh I love that" and the "WHAT NOW" shifts a lot haha, that's what you get from St. Anger :D It's certainly one of the records ever made by Metallica - to me, it the lyrics were always stealing the show. Came out at a point in time for me that gave me a lot of support, I'd say. And looking back at it now, I still enjoy it. But yeah, seeing some folks that know their stuff about recording and mixing and such, it's a whole new view on it. keep it up :)
James and Jason had a fight about Echobrain while filming their episode for “Classic Albums”. James threateningly implied Jason could be replaced in Metallica. That was the moment Jason knew he was leaving the band.
It took me 1hr and 15 ish minutes to do that list. (which is funny since St. anger is 1hr and 15 minutes long). As for 72 Seasons I restrained myself (literally) for 3 months not to make that list and wait until 72 seasons came out. It was painful. Also, Hate train is on Beyond Magnetic-Ep
I've only been a Metallica fan for like 2 to 3 months at this point (crazy i know) but these videos of the full albums with your guy's inputs have made me start to listen to them more often. I can definitely say that your videos have gotten me into their music, and funny enough, my favorite album is now St. Anger. Love you guys and how much info you bring to the background of these songs/albums.
not sure if I am right, but I'm sure you guys can confirm. The cymbals on the verses of Unnamed Feeling are backwards tracked, or flipped. Adding to all the weird mixing stuff you talk about.
I know as a suggestion this most likely will come far down the pike but i would love to see you guys go through all of Trivium's albums. Very cool to see you guys like Ascendancy and Shogun. The Crusade gets so much unwarranted flack. Their last 3 albums, The Sin And The Sentence, What The Dead Men Say and In The Court Of The Dragon are so damn good. I really hope you cover their entire discography. Cheers Fella's
Hate Train is on the Beyond Magnetic EP. It was an after release 4 track cd to from the Death Magnetic sessions. Hate Train, Just A Bullet Away, Hell And Back, Rebel Of Babylon
I remember this record. I had listened to The Black Album, Load, Reload S&M, I disappear and Garage Inc. because my mom loved 90s Metallica but never paid much mind to it and then this was released because I was obsessed with Iron Maiden's dance of death and Megadeth's The world needs a hero and just discovering the joys of metal and I bought the record (digipak tbh) and sounded really bad so I just shelved it. A year later in August 2004 my mom's cousin (which I called uncle) died and it was one of the darkest moments of my life at that point, I was 13 and was really angry with the world and very, very sad. I remember I just could not listen to any kind of music, but St. Anger just felt right because it sounded like I felt and I fell in love with The Unnamed Feeling. It made me feel like I was not alone feeling like that. Then I watched the docummentary and it was clear why it felt like a painful album. I'm not saying it's a good record, just that it was a portrait of pain and in that it was accurate. Also, that strange UUUUUuuuuu in invisible kid could have been done by a lead guitar but the "no solos" policy kinda screwed the song up. The album is like, a bunch of great songs messed up on purpose. It's like buying a bunch of cristal glasses and then scratch them up so they become "custom glasses". They are not custom, they are messed up, you messed up.
The crazy thing is, on the Some Kind of Monster soundtrack ep, they have the studio version of Some Kind of Monster, and their is an edit version, its 2 minutes shorter and totally remixed and it sound amazing. It's upsetting that he whole album doesn't sound that good.
@@PatrickMusilek both I believe. I believe Doug (could’ve been someone different) mixed my metal band’s album in 2004 and Clete was super patient and kind with a project of editing/digitizing some old 1970s cassette recordings by my grandfather in 2012-ish
Someone's already pointed it out, but for real - there's a radio edit of Some Kind of Monster that massively alters the drum sound, and proves a lot of what you guys were saying about the mix. It's the same recording, but the tweaks make it sound 1000x better.
Considering the fact that Metallica was on the very edge of splitting up during creating this album, James going to rehab, Jason already left the band, Lars and Kirk wondering alone if even Metallica still existed, it is a huge miracle St. Anger ever saw the light.
I often referred to this as the rehab album, because I feel that fueled so much of what was coming out of James at the time.
@@robertpfeiff Yes, and for this reason I think it is a very important imprint in Metallica's career. It is a document of that period of the band and I think we would be poorer without it. Actually I like this album for some reason.
HE FOCKING LEFT THE FOCKING BAND
I think the miracle would’ve been stanger never seeing the light of day.
I'd liken the process of making the album to a lengthy session of colonic irrigation because the resulting sound is pure shit.
When you are madly in anger with everyone and everything, you don’t even care about the mix at all, you just stick with it and it works perfectly! Great job! 🤘🏼🔥
3:16:05 btw, you should listen to the mexican band The Warning, they have just started their international tour! 🇲🇽⚡️
In denial
The roast of St Anger
Exactly !!!!!
@@ppaulisdeadd5879 you have no music tase
A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica is probably the best documentary I've ever seen on making an album. So much information and great little details, like James cocking a real gun over the guitar riff of "The God that Failed" that you barely hear on the final song but you'd notice something was missing if it wasn't there. The Classic Albums episode was basically a shortened version of the original documentary with some added interviews.
Agree
“Cliff Em All” is great as well.
Cliff 'Em All is great 🤘but it doesn't count as a making of documentary.
It’s also great watching Bob Rock beat the now classic Unforgiven solo out of Kirk.
@@ronniep2005 I wonder if anyone has edited the song and replaced the final version of Kirk's solo with the cringy version we hear on the doc.
St Anger has a guitar solo now!
@@PatrickMusilekYes it is
Bro dude in the blue has to stop talking so much and just listen
there is not much to listen
Clarification: The videos about the Black Album are called "A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica." It was originally a double VHS boxset. Tape 1 was about the making of the album, and Tape 2 was about the ENORMOUS tour they did to support it.
There is also a show called Classic Albums that was on Netflix for a time, and they have an episode about making the Black Album, as well.
I have those tapes, the VHS live shit binge and purge plus the VHS Hero of the Day single...lol
Yes. James and Jason had a fight about Echobrain while filming their episode for Classic Albums. James threateningly implied Jason could be replaced in Metallica. That was the moment Jason knew he was leaving the band.
Listening to these songs live really gives them new life, it just shows what this album could have been with good production
there was a bonus DVD that came with the album which has the band performing the whole album in the rehearsal space, and it actually sounds better than the album
I saw a version of one they did live and Kirk actually threw a solo in and it was very tasteful but invigorating
I don't think this abomination can be saved. it simply does not have good songs
"Changed a little bit" I mean it's cut in half basically. And yes it's great
I've just listened to it..holy fucking shit this album would've sounded INCREDIBLE!
Thats the main version of SKOM that I listen to. Amazing
I listened to your whole [b]Anger and it shocked me how freakin' great it is. I really love it 🧡👊🧡
@@barson8439 thank you! 🥰
It sounds much cleaner and the snare is infinitely more listenable
@@bigdawg702 thanks! ❤️
After so much years of despising the album, i can finally listen to it and enjoy it, thank u man!!
Lulu is a Lou Reid album, noone will ever change my mind on that
@@garethLDragon is cool though
@@garethL Yes, it is. And may it forever Dwell in the abyss of music hell never to be listened to by anyone again. lol
Lulu doesn't count dude. Lol
Keep trying to convince yourself that
@@Captain_AAhab😂😂
Exactly if you don't mind songs with interesting sounding mixes, you'll def dig st anger no prob
I agree. It’s a great album. It’s a genuine slice of where they were at the time, in crisis.
"All Nightmare Long" was also made in different form in Presidio.
I've always felt like St Anger has some real diamonds in the rough. If it was rerecorded with James' current voice, normal drums and maybe a few solos sprinkled here and there, and it would be a great album
All you said minus the solos! Kirk sounds so unbelievable bad nowadays so it's a relief to not having to endure his "solos".
@@eeeeeeee5063 I think that's a huge reach. Kirk is certainly boring now a days, but to say he is 'horrible" is reaching in my opinion.
Thank you so much! Lulu and Hardwired coming up soon-ish!
@@PatrickMusilekOh man, can't wait for Lulu LOL. Tho I actually do dig that album. Keep it up guys!
3:02:10 And the funniest thing is, the acoustified/orchestral version of All Within My Hands they did for S&M2 is, pardon my language, a goddamn masterpiece...
I absolutely agree!!!
S&M2 version of All Within My Hands is great! That is what made me revisit St Anger to begin with.
This album was pivotal in my development as a beginner guitarist. Those riffs were so much fun to play!!
45:11 Yeah Met fans they listen because they LOVE and HATE Metallica all at the same time. Dyers Eve BEST song EVER change my mind!
Since Chris mentioned how a section of double bass sounded like Slipknot’s Iowa, you guys should check it out. It’s an experience worth listening to
The guy that remastered this on youbtube with the green cover made this into one of the toughest albums I've heard.
They have ZERO clue about music production. It’s clearly a piss take. You’d hope.
The Unnamed Feeling is definitely my favorite song of the album. A bunch of other songs have great riffs but that’s my favorite song all the way through.🤘🏻
Mine too. Not only is it my favorite off St. Anger, it's honestly one of my favorite Metallica songs period.
Yep. It’s heavy. It’s got a mood and ambience too it. It’s actually setting a tone and taking you on a journey, plus I like the music.
Production sucks obviously. The cymbals splashing into everything is aaaaalmost too much to tolerate, but it feels like an actual bit of emotion.
Same.
“Those big hits. What is that” - 56:44
Lars is literally just hitting the crash with the kick 😂
I think he meant the kick overdubs in the chorus. They stand out too much in comparison to the otherwise crappy kick sound.
I was blown away! so I saw the documentary again and bam! there's the explanation for it, raw, intense, no solos! soulful, genuine
and 4!- Look up the St anger series of live rehearsals, sooo good too!
Finally, I found the people who enjoy St. Anger just as much as I do 😂
this one here’s guilty as well 😂
Its not my favorite album but it rocks. When you just want something different and raw this is a good album. Sure few songs are bad but there us some bangers on this album
I really like the album. Not their best, but still 7/10…do wish the drums sounded better because the riffs are sick
@@Troy.RitterI actually love drums, they're just kinda too loud...
You should check the “live in studio” session where they played the entire album with Rob Trujillo who joined Metallica a few weeks prior the session.
FAAAAR superior to the studio album. Those songs translate very well to a live setting.
Invisiblekid was very hard to get through lol
I remember the part about the first time Kirk noodled the solo for Enter Sandman
Is it on Netflix?

2:57:44 Actually Lars and Kirk contributed to writing the lyrics on this album.
2:57:00 ...they rented the Presidio for the garage feel prior to James going into rehab. It never went anywhere, and when James returned, the album was done at Metallica HQ.
on the metallica youtube channel there are frantic and st anger live performances from 2019-2021 that sound really good, its 100% worth checking them out
Finally!! 🔥
The bonus version of st anger came with a live in studio dvd set of the album. It sounded way better than the album itself.
I love this album I love how it sounds, the riffs, the drums yes the drums and james sounds incredible because he is not singing he is growling.
The snare drum gives me a headache... I listened to the album like 2 times and never again... Lol that fkn empty barrel hit sound... 😂
Orion is the 7th track on MOP Damage Inc is the last song
51:50 Aside from the fact that St. Anger was rarely performed live, it was usually Rob delivering the backing vocals (and rarely Kirk).
"Sweet Amber" seems like an ironic look look at "relief" (that only makes this worse for him) "sweet sweet relief"
And now that I think about it, the fact that the Unnamed Feeling, a song about anxiety, follows the song about alcoholism is really fitting.
One of the best reaction videos ever. Thanks, lads!
Thanks for reminding me of how much I love this album. Great review.
42:30 "It does not sound good, I'm gonna turn it up"
Lol

Pushead
@@fixxxer3456 yes!
The Black Keys have always been my favorite band, to hear Dan Auerbach mentioned in a review of St Anger was wild but made sense
I'm only watching it so I can react to it with you
Comment with your thoughts after you hear the whole thing! This album still confuses me, but the Chrises both seem to be liking it more and more!
2:27:55 "Another depression jam"
if St Anger was ever to be considered its own genre, the genre should absolutely be called that
Depression Jam
Without its flaws, this album is unironically awesome, it's raw, groovy and riffs hard
Imagine the type of backing vocals we would have gotten on st anger if jason was still in the band for the making of st anger
I can imagine all the demon screams coming out of him
Hello, special thanks for all the time you have devoted to this and other Metallica albums!
Saw them play Dirty Window live - SUCH A MF BANGER
these were the most fun, interesting, educating, entertaining good 2 hours (I admit, I skipped a bit here and there) of a reaction to such a controversial record.
I loved the "oh I love that" and the "WHAT NOW" shifts a lot haha, that's what you get from St. Anger :D
It's certainly one of the records ever made by Metallica - to me, it the lyrics were always stealing the show.
It was In Flames, Trivium, and Zao in 2006. I saw that tour as well.
"The ring is like a whole other instrument" is a hilarious observation. It really is like a bell or something.
They played St.Anger and Frantic in OKC when I saw them live.
not sure if I am right, but I'm sure you guys can confirm. The cymbals on the verses of Unnamed Feeling are backwards tracked, or flipped. Adding to all the weird mixing stuff you talk about.
THE DAY HAS FINALLY COME! I HAVE WAITED SO LONG FOR THIS!
I think you might have to officially call the intro 40mins a podcast at this rate.
That scream during dirty window gave me goosebumps
Hey Patrick ! Really enjoyed your Metallica reaction.
You should react to Ghost, great songs, great production, great band
It is probably a bit more difficult to get posted online, but I would LOVE to see your reaction to the documentary
The crazy thing is, on the Some Kind of Monster soundtrack ep, they have the studio version of Some Kind of Monster, and their is an edit version, its 2 minutes shorter and totally remixed and it sound amazing. It's upsetting that he whole album doesn't sound that good.
The album art work is Some Kind of Monster with St. Anger 'round his neck.
Whoa!!! Shoutout from a fellow Nebraskan who has been in Studio B for mixing and also Studio B’s old location for mixing
Ah a Clete Baker aficionado! Or did you work with Doug!
Crazy fact: they didn't have a bassist during this album. Bob Rock played bass on this album.
Watch the DVD that they released with the album. It gives a different experience, sonically and visually.
