The most profitable opening for rust would be the high quality crates. I opened around 30 dollars of them and got 50 in return
finally a game to gamble in where the only good out come is a tempered mp5 and 2 face masks

This shows what I've been saying for years now.... The ENTIRE item skin system within rust is an absolute JOKE and 99% of the time not worth breaking down. You're much better off holding onto your skins in hope that a few years down the road they will have some worth to them.... But whatever you do don't break down any of your skins for the soul purpose of turning them into materials for bags / barrels. Almost 3 years ago I wrote facepunch on how piss poor this system was and I ended up getting a reay smart ass response back that was the furthest thing away from anything constructive.

Of course odds are never in your favor with any of these things but the entire system of breaking down skins for mats to make containers is an absolute joke. Honestly I'd rather see the system disappear rather than just hang around as an eye sore of FP is going to leave it as is. What this shows me is that FP is making such an unbelievable amount of money from their weekly skin releases that they don't even feel the need to fix let alone address the component / skin system.

I don’t know what it’s like for other games, but I often feel you’re better off selling the bags and barrels. Even when it was limited to 5 items I checked the prices and in every case I would be better off selling the box, and buying one of the skins, and at times would be able to buy multiple things from the bag for a cheaper price. I wish there was an in out system where say you can sell your skins immediately to FP or Steam but only get 85% of the value; that item is now put into the potential pool. This way people sell expensive skins to put in the pool and the skin holder makes a profit. The skin holder would then sort through the skins and any of the super crappy skins are made into 1, more expensive skin. This way the demand for those items are now less common and therefore more valuable. I think it’d make a much more worthy system.
