I absolutely loved the ending of this episode! Toranaga stole it at the start and at the end with his speeches. IT'S TIME FOR THE CRIMSON SKY!!! Woahhhh!💪
Bullshit, Crimson Sky will never win, and Toronaga, Yoshi no Minowara will never fight a battle that has no real chance of winning . This is just another bid for time. Maybe he did sick Akechi on Kuroda Sama. But if he was anything like the real Nobonaga he was a brilliant, unpredictable, unpleasant head case. Had he not killed him some one else would have eventually.
Similar to Kiku's Willow World being more than a brothel of mere physical pleasures, the writers of Shogun take a similar approach in flirting the audience's journey to climax. Focusing not on the presence of action sequences, but the absence of them. The combination of tense yet slow-burn foreplay dialogues, consumes viewers/patrons into the willow world. To escape from our pain and boredom in real life.
Yeah it really is top tier! The delivery of Toranaga's lines trancends language. When you just hear the tone and power it's simply remarkable and you really gauge the formidable warrior and leader that he is!
My favorite scene had to be the bargaining meeting that Fuji and Mariko had with Lady Gin. Lady Gin dropped that Anjin and Mariko were never seen apart and Fujisama raised the tea cup to her mouth like she was eating popcorn and enjoying the drama.
Yabushige has been my favorite character so far. I actually love how hes stuck in war hes just trying to survive. Although hes cruel, hes a very interesting person
One of the things I like about this version as opposed to the 1980 is it is less Blackthorne centric. He is just another soul swept up in the Tsunami trying to trying to stay afloat. The brothel scene was Zen out of body experience where you are like flouting with their thought, all done without swearing or nudity. This production truly is a Masterpiece.

There is no filler, no wasted scenes and not one miscast of the characters. The brothel scene was heartbreakingly beautiful when John touched Markio’s hand. Addicted to every episode. Looking forward to watching all your breakdowns.
You're right, I didn't realize it but after toranaga revealed what Mariko's father's plan was, she immediately realized what was the reason why she's still alive and that is for her to continue on and do what she wants, whether it's with John or to finish the fight it'll all be disclosed soon enough. Best epi yet. Loving how this version is giving more screen time to lady ochiba and developing and ramping up imperial court intrigue. 1980s version was lacking this. Excited for the 4 episodes!
For me the best part of this episode was once again seeing the brilliance of Lady Kiku in action😏 Its her, and I guess everyone in Japan at this point, observing the relationship between John and Mariko and manipulating that relationship to breakdown Johns walls😈 She moved herself to position Mariko between herself and John, chose her words correctly, and used Mariko to seduce John😏 She also tried to seduce that _ménage à trois_ but Mariko's walls are a bit more sturdier than Johns😒 But once again, Lady Kiku represents the smarts of her discipline and profession, in yet another episode🙇🏽♂

I really like Mariko and in this episode she got even more character development and we got to know more about her as a character and as a person she is constantly in conflict with her desires, beliefs and duty. As we see in her past that she was very happy when she was with her father but it is really sad to know that she wants to die because of what had happened to her past and I really like the bond that her and lady Ochiba share they seem to be really close but as the year pass they became apart and I am really excited to know what is going to happen next. Actually, I wonder if they go with Torinaga in the direction of the historical Tokugawa: a schemer who engineered himself into position while pretending he didn't want the Shogunate. Lady Ochiba accused him of being a schemer in the background, and my interpretation of the scene with him telling Mariko about his father looks like manipulation. And, let's face it: Crimson Sky is not about dying with honour, it's a coup.
Crimson Sky is a distraction. To fool both his allies and his foes who may have spies around. Toranaga has no plans to lose or die shamelessly. He is a chess master and Ichido is making lots of mistakes, by isolating his allies. Toranaga is a Minowara. Of course he wants the Shogun title. But he is waiting until he is strong enough. Ichido and the rest of the regents are too powerful for him. Ichido is a peasant and these regents have noble bloodlines. Sugiyama was a big mistake and gives Toranaga an advantage. It is time for Mariko.
And don't forget the scene where that old woman told Ochiba no kata that she was aligning with the wrong man. After Mariko goes to Osaka, Ochiba starts considering Toranaga.
I like how they subtly suggested that Toranaga may be the conspiring one with selfish intentions all along. The show hints at him telling his son to never let your true intentions be known and to only trust yourself. It’s a good spin that great shows often do as the viewer realizes that maybe the hero POV isn’t as innocent after all.

I seriously distrust Toranaga's constant claims of ''not wanting a title''. He seems to be pretending, whatever he does, he does in the form of doing something unrelated. The way he crushed Mariko by sending her as the translator of Blackthorne's whoring, the way he constantly plays Yebushige, the way he's stripping Yebishige's nephew when their numbers are fewer and his trust for a successful battle was less sure. The way he throws accolades at Blackthorne wheras doing nothing for him out of his own interest.... He's just playing everyone, his first lines in the show was about him being like the falcon that hides itself in the Sun's rays.
Of course, he wants to be a shogun. That's why he ordered the special armor that "looks like past shoguns in his dreams" for himself. Plus, he plays everyone like fiddles. Have you ever notice that he always gift people the things that none of them want. Plus, he had to say that he never want to be a shogun because he's always in a presence of Yabushige, whom he knows could betray him for Ishido any time, so he had to be careful with his words.
I love how this show demands attention by trusting the audience to lean in rather than over-explaining every move. We focus more on the subtleties of every twitch in the face and every words spoken because of that.
Fuji had a poignant scene though. Fuji subconsciously held the tea cup over her mouth as to conceal her own stunned response when the brothel's mama sharply hinted at the rumors of Mariko and Anjin's complicated relationship. Most likely Fuji suspects they are in love.
@@ssotkow That was a great scene - Fuji putting the tea cup up to stiffle her grin at the drama that was unfolding in front of her. Fuji knows exactly what is going on under her own roof.
@@cyvan1750 That could be. I knew it had some significance but I couldn't figure out what it was as I've never bargained for a courtesan over tea, although I would drop 500 monme for Lady Gin.

Yabushige, if he is not careful, he is going to be another Salvatore Tessio of the Godfather movie. If you recall, he concluded that Michael Corleone couldn't win and betrayed him, and as the novel put it, "It was a great tragedy the the caporegime would make such a crucial mistake in judgment so late in life."
Its about his pride bro the old men tessio didnt like mikey and still look at him as a greenboy but mikey actually is more ruthless and calculated than his father
I didn’t see that it was a 10 episode series and when I got to the end of 6 I was so pissed cuz I thought that’s how it ended!! My god I was so happy to see there was more!! This series is so damn good
While very similar to the original series, it is better in ways, with slight changes, I still want to see him with Mariko. But worry it's sticking to close to the original series.
I don't think there will be a Crimson sky because that tactic is a death sentence where the army charge into Osaka castle. I think someone will come up with a better plan without the lost of lives by luring the enemies into open filed battle and use the cannons to destroy the enemy 😅
Idk if it was intentional but I find it ironic that Ishido rides a Red Horse at 10:55: "When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, "Come!" Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other"
If the story revolved around a scenario written by a British author, it wouldn't be as interesting as Game of Thrones. First, the number of warlord characters is already limited. It has no choice but to end with season 1. I wonder if there will be any excitement like the Battle of Sekigahara?
everybody is able to look up the result of said battle, so we know how the show has to end. :) be aware: the result is known since 1600 or ~50 years if you know it from the novel or >40 years for the mini series with Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune. if you know nothing of it: enjoy the roller coaster of events :D
Ishido is a clerk. A good clerk, but he is no leader. That's the chip on his shoulder. He constantly wants to prove he can and will carry on the will of the Taiko, but he couldn't really get things done without someone telling him what to do. Ochiba knows this. Toranaga knows this. Ishido knows it too, and he doesn't want to admit it.
@@korawitbuttramee618 Ishida Mitsunari, the model for Ishido, was a vassal of Asai Nagamasa who was defeated by Oda Nobunaga (the model for his predecessor, Taiko Kuroda), but was saved by Taiko (Toyotomi Hideyoshi) who was a vassal of Oda Nobunaga, and thus swore allegiance to Taikoyomi.
It's kind of a waste of his character. They didn't need to make him into a pawn just to build up Ochiba as a character. He should be someone with his own agenda that aligns with Ochiba, not just some underling.
I love how her husband sacrificed his life so Toronaga could escape and was loyal and he treat him like crap but give as much as he can to John when he did the same thing. I guess you could argue, Toronaga needs John as a leverage , but man it just feels so Hollywood and indeed written by western author I wish we spend more time on other characters than the love triangle
This show is amazing on like every level. I couldn’t tell though if Mariko was skewing his words that hard or Japanese just doesn’t translate well to English at times.
this is the test of TORONAGAS loyalty, but his son is too reckless to bite the bait on day confrontation from seiki. Toronaga is very smart, he genuinely listen and trust Blackthorne compare to his Generals, because hs so focus when listening to him even though he didnt understand words from blackthorne, the walk out of blackthorne saying: you wil all die for nothing, for that many scene happening surrendering is not an option for Lord Toronaga. its Merakos fathers unfinished business, that put together toronagas+mariko critical situation , its her fight.
Looks like the Taiko's heir is actually Toranaga's biological son! Wonder if that was in the book. I read it thirty years ago. Can't remember this detail
I'm a little confused and I know this show isnt 100% based on history. Why didnt the 4 remaining regents just move in on Toranaga after his army was decimated and its 1 clan against 4?
There are rules that guide them, the same as in politics. To simply attack would also bring great dishonour to each and every family and that is unthinkable in Japanese Culture. Similar to why Mariko cannot commit suicide, her Husband forbade it and so it is. Rules, honour a sense of place and purpose.
@@Puffdamgcdragon well he was decapitating folks lol..that part was a little confusing and it took a 2nd look. I know it's based of a book but I almost wished they used the real names; Tokugawa, Nobunaga, Mitsuhide etc

Another mystery is that there is the strange place name near the Nikko Tosho-gu.The name is "Akechi-daira(plain)" Why did Tokugawa Shogunate give the name of the traitor !?
He wanted to marry her cause he had a lot to gain and she had NONE, but once her father shamed her family he felt like he was her savior of sorts. Though he might be that’s not the way it is for her ( not to mention he’s an asshole for hitting her )
As per the official family tree, Ochiba no kata is supposed to be Kuroda’s niece (daughter of Kuroda’s younger sister), not his daughter ….. but now it’s changed?
On the not claiming to want the title Shogun. That is most likely lip service. He has to appear honourable and to come to the heirs rescue and defence. Then once he is in control the best way of doing so will be to assume the mantle of Shogun. Of course only till the heir is of age. And oh so sad a hunting accident. The book was a bit more open on the fact that Toronaga is a politician with ambitions as well. And that the fears of those opposing him weren't really without merit. The show pretty much tells the view Toronaga will later make sure is written into history. Of how he the true honourable and loyal one was forced to flee Osaka, assemble his troops and come to the heirs aid.
well im glad they havent killed mariko off yet, hopefully they wont but they seem to be keeping to the original story quite well so i dont have faith she will be in season 2.
@@BrainPilot I don't see why not, Anjin lived his life in Japan, became defacto trade ambassador to outsiders, he built them a fleet of western style ships, and the shogun eventually removed Christian religion from the nation. Of course, he wants to be a shogun. That's why he ordered the special armor that "looks like past shoguns in his dreams" for himself. Plus, he plays everyone like fiddles. Have you ever notice that he always gift people the things that none of them want.
Plus, he had to say that he never want to be a shogun because he's always in a presence of Yabushige, whom he knows could betray him for Ishido any time, so he had to be careful with his words.
of course he's playing everyone. he's tokugawa. he played everyone.
Everyone is a piece on Toranagas chess board and every event is a chance to move those pieces
Dude better go back and see season 1 and 3. A man has secret.
In his hidden heart, he wants to be Shogun. He is the actual villain in the series.
I love how this show demands attention by trusting the audience to lean in rather than over-explaining every move. We focus more on the subtleties of every twitch in the face and every words spoken because of that.
We need more of Fujii……😢😢
Fuji had a poignant scene though. Fuji subconsciously held the tea cup over her mouth as to conceal her own stunned response when the brothel's mama sharply hinted at the rumors of Mariko and Anjin's complicated relationship. Most likely Fuji suspects they are in love.
Facts, Anjin should have just called it a day & pillowed with Fuji.
Fuji is an agent for Torinaga, hence the screwing up of a message after the alleged pillowing. Now, he will be uncertain of their relationship.
@@ssotkow That was a great scene - Fuji putting the tea cup up to stiffle her grin at the drama that was unfolding in front of her. Fuji knows exactly what is going on under her own roof.
The production is top quality, very immersive
Yeah it really is!
Toranaga is too humble to say he is the Shogun! Even more reason to know he is!
I love the courtesan negotiation scene. They kept showing the cups. I wonder if that was intentional?
I feel like putting down the cup is their way of stating their positions politely. It's to say "I'm done"
@@cyvan1750yes thanks, I can see that now. I felt it had significance.
@@cyvan1750 That could be. I knew it had some significance but I couldn't figure out what it was as I've never bargained for a courtesan over tea, although I would drop 500 monme for Lady Gin.
CRIMSON SKY .lesss gooo
Hiroyuki Sanada played the role of Mitsunari Ishida (the model for Ishido) in the 1996 drama "Hideyoshi”
Man, wtf. The first episode was my favorite episode, then the second episode was my favorite episode, then the third, the fourth, etc. I'll just say it right now and be done with it: The last episode will be my favorite episode.
Haha, yeah it's definitely trending in that direction isn't it!
Lady Ochiba reign 🔥
Yabushige, if he is not careful, he is going to be another Salvatore Tessio of the Godfather movie.
If you recall, he concluded that Michael Corleone couldn't win and betrayed him, and as the novel put it,
"It was a great tragedy the the caporegime would make such a crucial mistake in judgment so late in life."
Well, at least Yabushige will have his will prepared.
Its about his pride bro the old men tessio didnt like mikey and still look at him as a greenboy but mikey actually is more ruthless and calculated than his father
If the endgame isn’t John and Mariko I will riot.
Hahaha! Let's see
The will scene was funny.
Such a beautiful show.
It really is!
lady ochiba is supposed to be kuroda sama's (nobunaga) niece right? shes the daughter in the show
I'm not sure if they confirmed she was kuroda's daughter but they sure invented their own scrambled timeline
Yodo-dono (childhood name: "Chacha")
Father: Azai Nagamasa Mother: Oichi no Kata (sister of Oda Nobunaga)
Winning was always about patience and allowing opponents to attack. Toranaga is a Noh performer...
I can't believe the Evil mouse has made something quite up to par!!?
Nice to see someone who knows what the word "decimated" means 😁
Even Mariko is a hawk from Toranagas fist!
Seriously slow burn, every scenes get me at the edge of my seat
I didn’t see that it was a 10 episode series and when I got to the end of 6 I was so pissed cuz I thought that’s how it ended!! My god I was so happy to see there was more!! This series is so damn good
Haha, yeah! I'm glad there's more to come still!
Excellent!
They need to explain why Marico's father killed his lord. They briefly showed him killing monks, but I know it's deeper.
Yeah it's probably coming! As we didn't see it all
@@BrainPilot Netflix had a special on the history of Japan and they went into more detail about it.
He was cruel asf kill for slightest reason I believe he killed and tourtoured his wife Marikos mother
Because akechi jinsai is a coward i bet the monks that kuroda beheaded is a bunch of corrupt guys that raped women
While very similar to the original series, it is better in ways, with slight changes, I still want to see him with Mariko. But worry it's sticking to close to the original series.
I had such a crush on the original Mariko.
I don't think there will be a Crimson sky because that tactic is a death sentence where the army charge into Osaka castle. I think someone will come up with a better plan without the lost of lives by luring the enemies into open filed battle and use the cannons to destroy the enemy 😅
Idk if it was intentional but I find it ironic that Ishido rides a Red Horse at 10:55:
"When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, "Come!" Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other"
I wish Netflix made this show, I hate waiting for episodes.
be aware: the result is known since 1600 or ~50 years if you know it from the novel or >40 years for the mini series with Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune.
if you know nothing of it: enjoy the roller coaster of events :D
Ishido is probably the biggest simp in the whole Japan. Dude is simping real hard for Lady Ochiba. Can’t say I’m not the same with him.
He's just an upjumped peasant who is trying to side with whomever he thinks the best for him.
You watch it base in plot i watch it base on scenes
If the scenes interesting even though doesn't make sense i still love it
I love how her husband sacrificed his life so Toronaga could escape and was loyal and he treat him like crap but give as much as he can to John when he did the same thing.
I guess you could argue, Toronaga needs John as a leverage , but man it just feels so Hollywood and indeed written by western author
I wish we spend more time on other characters than the love triangle
Pretty good episode we see now that Lady Ochiba and Markio have grudges
what ya talking about there is no evident for that
mariko didnt do nothing , she got married away
@@nguyenkhanh7759 She got against the people who conspired to kill off her family
I dont think so. IMO Ochiba sees both Mariko and herself as Toranaga's victims.
@@RogueCylon you the only one then
finally hit me, Marikos father was Akechi the killer of Oda Nobunaga, he was a hero!
I like the part when you “ending explained”, btw why it is missing?
Evert by episode has been better than the last.
Yeah it just keeps getting better and better!
Looks like the Taiko's heir is actually Toranaga's biological son! Wonder if that was in the book. I read it thirty years ago. Can't remember this detail
Question: Is Yabushige based on Kobayakawa Hideaki? He's the closest I can think of when it comes to the historical figures at the time.
I admit I haven't read the book, and I can't help wondering if the father of Lady Ochiba's son is someone other than The Aged Taiko?
I'm a little confused and I know this show isnt 100% based on history. Why didnt the 4 remaining regents just move in on Toranaga after his army was decimated and its 1 clan against 4?
Yeah. I was wondering the same
There are rules that guide them, the same as in politics. To simply attack would also bring great dishonour to each and every family and that is unthinkable in Japanese Culture. Similar to why Mariko cannot commit suicide, her Husband forbade it and so it is. Rules, honour a sense of place and purpose.
there is still 4 episodes coming not 3 as u said, right? please say right :D
Ep7 8 9 10= 4 episodes 😂
i don't understand, ishido doesn't wants to kill toranaga if there was not legally, but kill the other regent quick easy
IShido not openly stated he kill that regent, he cover it as bandit kill that regent,,
I doubt he wanted to kill the other regent either, but he has no choice because he is being pressured by Ochiba to get results quickly.
I had to go back and check out mariko's father again..so that's how they depicted Nobunaga(my fav warlord)
Depicted or Decapitated? 😄
@@Puffdamgcdragon well he was decapitating folks lol..that part was a little confusing and it took a 2nd look. I know it's based of a book but I almost wished they used the real names; Tokugawa, Nobunaga, Mitsuhide etc
I Was Hoping Kiku Would Play The Samisen Like In The Book
Honnoji Incident(Akechi killed Oda(Kuroda) by the troops of 13,000) is one of the maximum mystery of Japanese history.
There is another mystery.
"Nikko Tosho-gu Shinto Shrine" (World Heritage Site) is the famous tourist spot .It's constructed as graveyard of Tokugawa Ieyasu(Toranaga) and it plays a role of guardian deity of the capital Tokyo(Edo) , and it's located in the due north of Tokyo (Japan has culture of vengeful spirit and feng shui(Chinese Astrology)).
Another mystery is that there is the strange place name near the Nikko Tosho-gu.The name is "Akechi-daira(plain)"
Why did Tokugawa Shogunate give the name of the traitor !?
Now i understand that mariko's father killed ochiba's father. Thanks
Let the war begin.
He wanted to marry her cause he had a lot to gain and she had NONE, but once her father shamed her family he felt like he was her savior of sorts. Though he might be that’s not the way it is for her ( not to mention he’s an asshole for hitting her )
Toda Hiro-matsu was presiding over 2 of toranaga's provinces in the book, which made him wealthy like a daimyo. being heir to that is not cheap.
It's exctasy every time, truly, this show.
As per the official family tree, Ochiba no kata is supposed to be Kuroda’s niece (daughter of Kuroda’s younger sister), not his daughter ….. but now it’s changed?
0:34 1:19 1:42 1:48 2:01 2:29 2:58 3:35 4:43 5:31 6:38 6:55
Kiki& Mariko are bloody gorgeous imo
If the series climax is the Battle of Sekigaha, who on the council of Regents will play the role of Kobayakawa Hideaki? 🤔
Buntaro is defo turned. they skipped over his escape and how he goy away when being so outnumbered..
It's a possibility! The fact it lingered on him that little bit longer was interesting as well!
Am nervous for Toranaga becuase no one in his camp truly supports him except blackthorne, mariko and the spy samurai with pigeons ooof
Yeah, it's going to be interesting to see how it all plays out
well im glad they havent killed mariko off yet, hopefully they wont but they seem to be keeping to the original story quite well so i dont have faith she will be in season 2.
Sadly there's not gonna be a season 2!
@@BrainPilot I don't see why not, Anjin lived his life in Japan, became defacto trade ambassador to outsiders, he built them a fleet of western style ships, and the shogun eventually removed Christian religion from the nation. There are many other stories to tell of that era when Anjin was alive is my point, maybe with a time jump, will be a shame for only 1 season.
@@NichoTBEthe show is based on the novel and the novel ends oct 1600.
This is game of thrones but much better and if ned stark didnt die, its like ned vs cersei
True!
Marico did let her father down. She has been pouting rather than being the soldier/warrior she could have been.
