- I review, breakdown and explain Shogun episode 4 on FX. I discuss the story which is set in 1600 in Japan as John Blackthorne arrived there. I react to Yabushige betraying Toranaga and Ishido, Nagakado launching an attack on Jozen, and John and Mariko’s romance. I compare the story to the real events with Ieyasu Tokugawa and William Adams. I also give my theories and predictions on episode 5.

This was definitely the best episode of the season so far! It very much felt like the end of the beginning and I can't wait to see that chaos that's about to unfold! Let me know what you thought of the episode below!
I haven't read the novel, but I'm totally getting the vibe that Yabushige, the semi-comic relief Uncle, was written to become one of the fan favorites and a potential dark horse, who unfortunately, may become the unlikely turncoat hero... giving his life to protect our main protagonists. Yabushige's probable sacrifice as a dispensable character, though much more significant than plot cannon fodders, to provide that emotional gut punch for audience when called upon. He is a man who'd choose his death. The uncle's current situation is similar to being caught between the proverbial waves and rock.
Lol .. My man did you miss the part where the son of the "shocked" jabushiki (i think his name was) told him that he has a plan? The dude is in on it and is an ambitious snake. I love the character, but he is not shocked in the end. He too wanted that war, because it is in his interest to be valuable to someone, because it will keep him from insta death. Lord Toranaga is absolutely aware I think of the inner nature of his "ally", that by the way has done nothing that is not in Lord Toranaga's interest. (sorry for my shit English, it's my 3-rd language)
The story is written as it is, but cannon? Toranage needs infantry, and those cannon (not that they had the range) wouldn't scratch Osaka.
I am Japanese. It seems that some people are making a fuss about the lack of black people in SHOGUN. Several years before this era, there was a black samurai named Yasuke who served under Nobunaga. However, he was released from his samurai status at the same time as Nobunaga's assassination. Before him, there was no other black person in Japan. Also, in the era of this drama, only Europeans, let alone Americans, came to Japan. Also,There were no black aristocrats in Europe at that time.
@@takuh6830 My Japanese friend .. people are just stupid and don't care about reality if it goes against their own personal beliefs .. So don't waste your time to explain nothing to them. To me Japan has been and always will be the ICHIBAN !!!
Early in the story, you think it is the John Blackthorne story. As it progresses, you begin to feel like John is more of an observer of other people's stories.
He's the audience surrogate. We as the audience are supposed to be looking and asking questions about the world from his POV because everyone else already has a history separate from his character urgency at least at the beginning.

Onna Bugeisha, Women Samurai were trained from a young age just as the men were. Women die on the sword just like the men, whether they are on the battlefield or not. So, they train in halberd, archery, and blade work. They were fiercer than the men in many cases. Case in pointe.
she's smart. no men ego involved so things got settled down
You got the dynamics wrong with Toranaga on the beach making a speech.
Toranaga was actually afraid that Yabushige could take him prisoner in Ajiro, and deliver him to Ishido.
That he was surrounded by a massive Yabushige army chanting "Yabushige!" made him more worried.
However, Toranaga being smart and manipulative, gave such a martial speech that the troops changed their chants to "Toranaga!"
He also took the occasion to suddenly leave by boat back to Edo, escaping to somewhere where he is safer and nor surrounded by potentially unreliable troops.
Very crafty this Toranaga!
There is where you are wrong. He went back to edo to Raise his Army for the upcoming war. You'll see in the upcoming episodes what in talking a about
@@Slycarlothat doesn't change the fact that he was safer in Edo rather than with Yabushige.
in my opinion i think he also predicted that ishido will want to sway yabushige so toranaga let his son to stay.. toranagas son would not permit them to see their tactics so he finished ishido messenge... son know no matter what war is here.. why give the enemy an edge..

This is perhaps one of rare instants of seeing how terrifiying how cannons are depicted. Usualy in oldder films a cannon blast as a simple explosion on the ground and people fell down. But here you see several people ripped apart due to chain shot and so accrately. So seeing those men get ripped in half must been a horror to witniss.
Yeah it was horrific to see!
Wasn’t expecting to see in live action what chainshot and grapeshot does to horses and people xd
@@TH_Sofayea that was... gruesome...
This is crap. Where did the canons that did all the damage come from ? The smoke from their firing is seen in the far distance. Chain and grape are used in decreasing ranges of approaching targets. The idea that firing them from such a great distance at targets removed from the friendly party by only a few yards with such great accuracy is truly laughable. Also, who sighted and placed those cannons without
Blacthorn’s knowledge or guidance.

I like Yabushige. Guy’s stuck between a rock and a very very hard place. Can’t wait to see how he wades through this mess he never asked for..

Toranaga's model, Tokugawa Ieyasu, is actually like Toranaga in the drama. He was very patient and clever, yet charismatic at the same time. Since I'm a fan of Tokugawa, I'm rediscovering his charm through this drama. I cannot wait for the next show!

Havent been this excited for a show each week in years this episode specifically the ending really set the tone for how the rest of the season is going to go
This series is blowing me away ( pun intended ).
FX seems to have this ability to pump out surprising, insanely good series out of nowhere. The dude playing Blackthorn especially, I can't believe I've never heard of him before. He has so much presence I don't understand how anyone could stand on-scene with him.
Yeah FX are the dark horses when it comes to TV. They do produce some real gems. Gems that do just come out of the blue
With the success of Game of Thrones, Shogun was asking to be remade for the modern audience as it has many of the same ingredients but with a real world historical background. Even better that the series hasn't butchered novel but I suspect that's because James Clavell's daughter is one of the executive producers and she's known to be protective of her father's work.
@@stevebubbie1126 the whole fidgety thing makes sense though. He's a man in a foreign land, doesn't know customs, and is meant to stick out like a sore thumb. I don't know much about the book(s), but it all works for a series

As for episode 4, I feel compelled to give it another watch, especially because of I got fixated with Kiku LOL. But seriously...
To support your theory, Yes, Its John Blackthorne moment well probably all his scene. And the the character of Omi is beginning to be interesting. Indeed, for the grand master Toranaga himself, he mirrors the brilliance of the great tactician Tokugawa Ieyasu.

The intricate writing and complexity in story is def up there with Breaking bad imo

Same. the scene with Mariko and John chatting back to back was so touching that I was getting emotional and teary-eyed
Let’s hope when the series end, they make sure to end it right. Unlike GOT with that god awful ending. Such a shame because GOT could have went down as the GOAT TV show. Until this day I cannot or even think about rewatching GOT just because how bad the ending was.

I think Toranaga's son decision to kill the messenger was pretty brutal but it had to be done. Wasn't the smartest thing to do but it definitely sealed Yabushige's fate in which I believe Toranaga's son knows that he was going to potentially betray his father, in a way, he's cutting the burning fuse of a bomb before it explodes. With Toranaga being away, I think Ishido will send their men to capture the port. Holding Toranaga's son hostage, putting Toranaga in a tough situation potentially making him trade for John Blackthorne? This is just my opinion and a little bit of prediction. Can't wait to see what Toranaga has planned!
agree he did something he shouldn't but he had no choice this going backfire on him hard and he got nobody to blame but himself
@@SoldierSpiderx if you don't know that by killing ishidos men and that messenger is going to work for toronaga in the long run because ishido don't know how deadly those cannon are when time for war to break out toronaga is gonna steam roll everybody with them
@@SuperChuckkie that it true those but it Toronaga it ready those that the good question cause he went away to train their man and he had other plan so now he got come up with new plan and for sure the canon going work in his favor and I have no doubt his son going get kill for sure
If memory serves, in the book the messenger is shown the slain homing pigeons he'd sent out to warn Ishido before he dies.
Yabushige's fate isn't sealed. The envoy was taking him back to the Regents to be executed and no artillery demonstration was going to change that fact. Now that the envoy is murdered and the war is on, all eyes will be on Toranaga which leaves Yabushige off the hook... for now, so he has time to train his forces then throw his support behind the winning side. It's very clever and all part of the plan cooked up with his nephew.
Omi's smirk made me audibly yelp in glee in an already epic scene. hay!
Haha, he got exactly what he wanted!
That ending was crazy , seeing Toranagas son just step up and put an end to the "Meddling Brat" image he was tired of . Theres no going back now , the war has started ! Best show ive seen in awhile
It was the worse thing he could of done because the killing of messengers is taboo. It will make it much more difficult for his father to bring the Christian lords into his camp.
Nice episode review
Thanks!
That was a very thoughtful gift...
Giving Fuji the gun was a great move to show that Blackthorn was not her owner. She has agency if she really wants to end him in his sleep.
I actually liked this deviation from the book, fleshes out the Fujiko character much better than in the book or mini series. Besides she was absolutely Bad Ass
Fujiko is samurai class so she knows how to use weapons and would just kill him with a tanto if she wanted. She doesnt need a gun.
bro just watched it and damn what a masterpiece(s) 😂
Another great breakdown
Glad you enjoyed it
That ending man... My job in the U.S. Navy was to track targets on a radar and fire our 5" cannons onboard cruiser warships. 2 per ship, fore and aft. Sea, land, and air capabilities. So cool to see the O.G.'s at work here, haha. I was topside for a shoot and let me tell you, the cavity in your chest, any open space (i.e. lungs), will reverberate during a shot. Never felt anything like it. Some fun facts... before a shoot there is a thorough briefing. Things such as sea life are taken into account, even. A round and powder charge is manually loaded below deck by some mean gritty old bastards called Gunner's Mates. Shooters are called a Fire Controlman. These rounds are high-explosive and weigh about 60-80lbs a piece. Target practice is a workout, for sure. Another cool thing is that an entire warship will rock in the sea, as each round is discharged. The gun will shoot, you wait, then about 30 seconds later you see a large explosion on the horizon. Wild shit. When asked what you did for work, we used to say land scaping or population control. HOOYAH! ⚓
I am probably going to watch this series one day, but the fact that it wasn't filmed in Japan makes a difference to me. The 'Land of the Rising Sun' has a spirit all its own. After at least 2,000 years of living on the archipelago, the people and the land are one. Filming in Toronto, or some other Canadian province, isn't the same.
This serie will end with the samurai ragnarok; sekigahara.
Damn. If a cannonball just looked like this can't wait to see that battle
Skigahara 1600, kino af

I agree this has been the best episode so far. It showed that Mariko came out from behind her fence and shared an intimate moment with Anjin, but not as Mariko it seems. She was a courtesan that nite. Then, we see Toranaga's son ignore his father's advice, made the first move, and the first mistake as now, this was an undeniable provocation for war. Toranaga himself will be pissed and I'm sure he will feel that it was not an honorable way to fight for samurai.
Really dynamic storyline with so many characters developing around the flirtations of war on the horizon.
This show is amazing.

Hadn't even heard of this series until a few days ago, but wow, I'm gripped. It's like Game of Thrones, but set in feudal Japan.

Mariko is played to the tee.. but I also was awesome struck by the action and scenes with John and fujisan.. she is fantastic. Every episode feels like 5 minutes and thus and our short.. finally something worth watching and getting excited about.
bruh have u even read the book or watched the old show? mariko is not even portrayed right. fuji has more romantic chemistry with blackthorn then the person that is supposed to be his love interest lol.
I haven't read the book, but I just correctly guess (and verified it) who her family is, and why she is thus with Toranaga. I won't give that bit away, but the second she said "it (her family name) is well-known in Japan", but it is one she absolutely has to hide, I knew who she was. And the fact that an Englishman is now entangled with basically Tokugawa, gives her away if you know Japanese history of the period. Which is why, the last scene, is her absolute horror at war coming again.
Her clan lost everything, literally everything but her (and historically the character she is based on became essentially a political prisoner) the last time two great armies fought to unify Japan and be Shogun.
It also makes sense why she was married to Toda, who is loosely based on the Honda clan.

Lord Toranegas Son made the right decision. He was left alone in a snake pit with no street cred yet. The war was going to happen anyway, it denied his enemy the knowledge of his technical advantage and he certainty got everyones attention. Well done Lad.

I feel Nagakado just trying to look out for his dad the best way he knows how. Foolish? A bit. But pretty ballsy. He was right in a sense that any ‘information’ taken by the enemy would deem detrimental to his father’s chances of success. He just wants to make Father proud and to be dependable as the next heir. But in the eyes of Samurai… it is deemed savage and cowardly. But war is War.. us in the present wouldn’t see that. But back then it was dishonorable. I‘m curious to find out what his father’s response would be…
Can we make a petition to get it all released in one go?!
Blackthorne's elevation to the status of Hatamoto is not just a reflection of his personal growth and adaptation but also a strategic move by Toranaga to utilize Blackthorne's foreignness as an advantage in his campaigns. As a Hatamoto, Blackthorne is granted a fief, becomes a key figure in Toranaga's court, and plays a crucial role in the daimyo's ambitious plans.

I'm happy Yabu Kashigi is still alive. He's a great character.
Pretty thin. I noticed you did not address the idea that these newly trained artillerymen could fire shotgun like ordinance with such precision to within yards of friendlies without hitting them . See what happens to the Virginians in Armistead’s brigade when they approach the Union held wall at Gettysburg to get an idea of the effect of the type of rounds supposedly fired by the Japanese .
There are a lot of great historic Asia dramas just getting more acknowledgement now. Been watching them for say 15 years. Game of thrones (comparison) ain't got nowt compared to quite a few a dozen at least.
GoT was too big and after the directors/writers idk ran out of book material it went completely to shit after S4/S5
I'm guessing that misstep of Toranaga's son at the end of the episode means that they lost the opportunity to send Yabushige back to Osaka with the messengers, where he would be forced to commit seppuku. They're kind of stuck with him now.
Yeah that is true!
John should be proud that his soldiers are very receptive to his training. 4 shots in rapid succession, 4 hits without collateral, all without his supervision.
Also, great foreshadowing!

"You will see the cannons fire across the plains and blast their targets with perfect accuracy."
