Not only the names confusions, we also have the race confusion based on the skin colour and name in this country. Like I am an Indian Muslim but most people thought I am a Bangla. Sigh.
As a Chinese, I happen to work with Southeast Asians very often. Chinese people pronounce every consonant and vowel as clearly as they can(even if they can't seem to do it correctly), and in most SE countries, people tend to leave out many syllables in a way that I cannot anticipate.

So when they speak English, they still use the Chinese pronunciation. e.g. /t/ at the end of a word is supposed to be a light consonant, but in Chinese, we don't have this kind of pronunciation, so most people would replace it with the closest pronunciation in Chinese /tǝ/. There seems to be a barrier between languages that most Chinese people can't overcome.
