I don't know whether Duckie was gay or not, never thought about it....but one thing is for sure, the character Duckie stole every scene he was in and almost the whole movie
After all those years shes still "friend zoning" him. Its a dumb term but she literally is doing the stereotypical friend zone thing with this character including reading him as gay which actually borders on being offensive at that point
Just because a guy is quirky and not the 'typical leading man' don't mean he's gay. I agree with John I never saw Duckie as gay,he really loved her! Plus he was frickin sexy deffs sending me vibs ;)
I find it so silly when actors like Molly invent stories for their characters when they are not real! If Duckie wasnt gay in the movie he wasnt gay! If any character in that film turned out to be gay it was Blain anyway! lol
@@Nazaba09 Well yes but to experience genuine romantic love for the opposite sex, which was definitely conveyed by Duckie, isn't possible. The phenomenon of being in the closet isn't having genuine heterosexual feelings then switching, it's naively, or sometimes knowingly, re-purposing basic feelings or love humans have for one another as being romantic or simply playing a role despite instincts. Most people are using this phenomenon to explain an array of things that it actually doesn't.
I was born July 1970 so I was a fully emerged in 80s culture and I'm here to tell you the 80s did not suck. The music was awesome, not conserrative, and the fashion was it's own. I was born in 1965, and was in high school for the first four years of the 80s. Good times. However, I deeply miss, too, the 70s, and going to the roller rinks where the disco ball turned over our heads while disco music played. I guess every decade has its perks.

Indeed. Where's Andrew McCarthy for that matter? I don't think that Duckie is gay, either. I think she broke up with Blane and went back to Duckie, since it's plainly evident that Blane was as dull as dishwater. They all do look great. Annie Potts somehow looks younger than she did back in the 80's. Weird.
some cool trivia about the film: 1) gina gershon plays benny's friend in gym class 2) the actress who played andie's friend in school sadly passed away right after the film was released. 3) benny's friend in class who says "we'll take the chapter" played kevin bacon's girlfriend in "the big picture". sadly she's gone missing with a lot of rumors about her health & well being. 4) the film is set in a chicago suburb but was shot all around LA 5) the blonde at the end of the film that duckie winds up with is the original buffy.
I went to school with Molly in the 7th grade, she was in the facts of life but then she moved to another school or state, not sure, but i still remember her in my PE class.
So many public stars/celebrities want us to THINK that being gay is the "norm" when its anything but. That's why you're seeing Molly Ringwald impart that persona onto that actor that played Duckie. He was just flamboyant and a free spirit. BIG difference.
Annie Potts' character, "Iona", in my opinion, she was the true heroine of Pretty In Pink. We see her mature, and ground herself when we last see her towards the end of the movie. I never thought Duckie was gay despite he being flamboyant.
I never, ever felt for one second that Duckie was gay.....how could he be? He absolutely adored Andie and would die for her as he said in the film...lol....he was just very loyal and sweet and I found him to be very sensitive and sexy at the same time.....I never went to a prom when I was a teen so I kinda identified with Duckie for that too....I really do LOVE this film and so nice to see the reunion here with Molly, Jon and Annie ~

I don't think ducky was gay. He was a close friend to her for a long time that it became difficult for him to get romantically involved with her even if he wanted. She will always see him as a close friend.
The duckman is not gay in fact, he would probably be one of most heterosexual men there is and any women would be lucky to have him, including Andie. Gay men do not hold a corner of the market on senstivity, creatvity, etc. What are they anyway, about 5 to 10 percent of the population? So that would make it a 95 percent chance that the duckman isn't gay.

There are ppl in the comments saying that Duckie should of ended up with Andie, well I know this is like a decade later to inform these commenters but he did end up with her in the original movie. At the end when Andie enters the prom and she see's Duckie and runs to him and they enter the prom together that's actually the end of the movie. John Hughes had ppl watch the original movie in select theaters before actually sending it out to theaters across the country and when ppl saw that she ended up with Duckie the audience booed big time, they didn't like it at all. So John Hughes had to go back and change the ending, that's why over the year's a lot of ppl were so confused by Andies reaction to Duckie when she saw him. Plus Molly Ringwald had a lot of say in the movie, she actually wanted to end up with Blaine. Duckie is obviously not gay. He expressed his love for her so much in the movie. He really was in love with andie.
