Never ceases to amaze me how Jon knows basically everything and makes all his projects look waaay easier than it is. Amazing. Wish I had a friend like that to ask about show to do stuff. Thank you for sharing.
usually when I place a door and it's close to a room corner, I'd have it open the other way so that the door is against the corner of the room so as to give free movement in the room without a door in the way but I'm sure you thought this one through and have good reason to have it that way. nice clean work, as usual Jon. you inspire.
I really enjoy these videos. As a woodworker, I am also frequently called upon to be the family carpenter so this sort of info is very interesting and helpful to me! Thanks!
Wow! I enjoyed watching the sidestep project thanks for sharing your experience and project. I am a noob and I think I actually watched a "real" carpenter in his element.
I'm sure you've seen then, but Frank Howarth mentioned air flow issues in his dust collection videos with his in-ground piping. The 90 degree fittings robbed the system of a lot of suction. Food for thought.
For some of us, it almost feels like you're improving 'our' shop, we've seen so many wonderful projects being built in it. Maybe it feels like a side step now, but it will soon enough feel like just one step in a much more functional workshop. Good on 'ya, Mate.
You already have a few comments about the door and hinge but I was curious about another thing. You seem more like a traditional guy but also practical so I'm wondering if you considered getting one of those magnetic zipper doors. It's definitely not aesthetically pleasing but you wouldn't have to deal with opening and closing a door with your hands full or the door itself being in the way. I enjoy these update videos. I'm always impressed by the amount of thought and consideration you put into your projects, even simple or personal ones.
Good morning everyone, as often is the case one project turns into another with an old building. Just curious do you call it a sill plate or a sole plate? Have a great weekend all!
Yes. Also mud sill or the base plate. They are all used by different people you run into. I use sill plate or base plate. I would have probably put in a bigger sliding pocket door(use up less wall space) to get projects through. I can only think you take the projects in another way?
Another great video! Reminded me of watching This Old House when I was young. Question: why did you choose to have the door swing on the left side and not the right side?
Hi Jon, thanks for posting this video, the shop Reno is looking good. I’m a king time viewer and have to say I really enjoy the mix of topics you cover. I think any homeowner that is interested in wood working would find value in what you post. Quick question on this video, I was wondering why you didn’t hang the door so it swings into the corner rather than into the room where it might block foot traffic. If you clip it so it sings out into the shed it looks like it might swing into the corner. I might be missing something though. Anyways thanks for this video, looking forward to the next one.
Nice job. I'm sure you didn't set out to find rot to fix! I'm curious: did you consider going with a left-hinged door so that it would swing towards the closest corner and be less likely to be in your way as you open it?
Finishing a blanket box for the grand kid following one of your videos but ran into problems trying to install soft close hinges. Do you have videos or some pointers on how to get these things to work correctly. i have followed the instructions but something got lost in the translation. thanks
Need to do this on one wall of my shop. Unfortunately, whoever built my garage put it right on the property line and I have to go into my neighbors yard to get to the exterior of that side. Been thinking about ways to bring the wall in a few feet.
Is there any guideline on when to build a temporary wall vs jacking up the rotting wall to fix it? I'm currently planning a similar repair on my detached garage.
Since you’re going to build in one spot and finish in another, I think I would have put in a double door so I could get larger pieces into and out of the finishing room.👍✌️😊🙏🏼⚒⚒⚒
Dragging ass a bit this morning. Been a long week Bud. Saw notification for video watching it and now I'm motivated to head out. Hoping all is well Bud, Dirty Jersey out!!!
@@JonPetersArtHome I will now that I'm ready!! Got that landscape install. Once I finished video I was like hell yeah let's get it Son!! Enjoy your weekend Jon 👍 #jerseyboyz
I wish you'd shown how you made those supports on the back of your studs before cutting them!! Did you use screw or nails ... im in a similar situation
Great video Jon. I just spent the last year renovating my basement and had to open a wall or two to add doors. You still made it look easier. My question is, how did you get to that other room without a door? From the outside?
John, nice upgrades to the shop! I have a question about the floor. Did you put the vapor barrier underneath because of your location? I am in Florida and getting ready to put a wood floor on top of dirt in half of my shop. Any tips?
Great video. Shame TH-cam saw the need to put 6 political adds in the video. TH-cam is getting out of hand with all the adds in videos. TH-cam is trying to force ppl to pay for premium TH-cam add free is a piss poor business model. It’s gonna end up driving ppl away. Feel bad for guys like you.

Nothing better than shop renovation!
I like these videos, as someone who is renovating a barn, this is right up my alley!
One step forward, two steps back. That is how my shop upgrade is going... Looking forward to the new shop! *I saw it!*

Finally someone doing a real proper teardown.
The shop is getting some serious upgrades. Very cool.

thanks to this video i feel like a master of wood working.
Wow! I enjoyed watching the sidestep project thanks for sharing your experience and project. I am a noob and I think I actually watched a "real" carpenter in his element.
Great video Jon. I saw IT! nice. Keep up the good work and we are looking forward to see the new shop in action.
Hey Jon, looking good! Wish I had a shop like yours, I'm still in my basement lol keep it up. I call it a sill plate btw, have a good one
That old growth thicker 2x4 though. 🥰 awesome to see you reuse some of that awesome lumber that still has life to it!
the grain lines in that old lumber... Great to see the expanded shop space, Jon!
That nail gun is bad ass, looks like it packs a serious punch!
Good Video Jon, keep um coming Buddy !!!.
I never thought of this, I got a pole barn rocks and framing for a floor would work perfect.
I'm sure you've seen then, but Frank Howarth mentioned air flow issues in his dust collection videos with his in-ground piping. The 90 degree fittings robbed the system of a lot of suction. Food for thought.
Love the video Jon look forward to seeing ya on Instagram 👍🏻

Just can’t wait to see how you’ll do your dust collection in the floor 😁👍🏼🇨🇦
Wow amazing
Nice work Jon!

Sill plate usually, bottom plate according to the New Zealand building code :)

Another good video Jon! Thank you for sharing them with us!💖👌👍😎JP
Nicely done Jon, thanks for the info! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Love these shop videos, motivating stuff
Thanks for the video!
Nice so far Jon, can't wait to see finished..🤘🤘
Love these videos......keep the, coming.
Anyone else think that door swings the wrong way? Seems like it would be better to swing into the corner.
Typically you always hang a door to open to the nearest wall
I was thinking the same thing. Looks like it'll swing into valuable floor space - maybe something else is destined for the "left" corner?
Absolutely. looks off-balance and awkward.
first thing i thought of

Nice work!!!
that is some serious vapour barrier Jon 😁 6mm is about ¼".

Thanks man
Wish we could still get Doug fir 2x4’s like the old one you cut!

very interesting video's

I supported the Weight with a temporary wall and then sister the studs.
I used screws

No he teleported
I notice the nailer seems to be sparking Jon, Is it ok?

Cool u rock
Barn was held up by hopes and dreams
What caused the rot?
6 mil vapour barrier or 6mm vapour barrier?
did i miss something? Was that temporary wall setup because it was a load bearing wall?
Yes that is a temporary load -bearing wall. Nothing missed.
5:47 bye bye blade.
10 point
Wouldn't be better to have the door opens towards the wall (corner) rather than to the middle of the room?
👍
not a load bearing wall.. right
I had expected you would have built the door yourself...... :-)
Are you not concerned about asbestos in that insulation due to the age of the house?
seems the door opens on the wrong side. i bet thats the subject of the next video.
6 mm plastic?? That doesnt sound right, think he meant 0,6mm
you didn't make that door...
