    A cabin/cargo fire is probably one of the scariest things in the air.

    4:31 why not just have a depressurized cargo area to begin with? (I apologize if you answer this later on in the video)

    • @A330Driver
      @A330Driver  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Two primary reasons:
      1) Live cargo such as animals is often transported via air. You couldn't do that in an unpressurized plane.
      2) You still need access to the cargo deck from the manned parts of the plane. However the pressure difference would be huge, thus you'd need some very strong structures to support that pressure difference. That'd add tons of weight to the plane without any good reason for it. It would basically be a whole new design of a plane then.

    OK. Lots os questions for me here. ... if you dump the cabin at altitude FL25 or higher its going to get awful cold for the pilots. Is that why you set the packs to high? Would that be enough? Would the pilots in shirtsleeves be able to operate the plane for say 15 minutes without freezing to death? doubtful. What compromises do you have for this? Pretty steep descent, but what about cabin pressure equalization on the way down or you may break the ear drums of the crew. How fast do you dump the cabin for the same reason?
    If the average fire will kill you in 18 minutes, I would bet that in 15 many planes are in real trouble. So, going around for me in this situation is NOT an option. Depending on when it happened in a flight you are probably going to be landing overweight and won't dare dump fuel unless super sure it wouldn't kill you. So, come in steep and land it and get the hell out.

    Great lesson and good to know but hope like hell you never have to use it. I came across an article today titled Boeing's Nitrogen Generation System. Is that something you might want to do a video on?

    • @A330Driver
      @A330Driver  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much!
      The NGS is used to fill the fuel tanks with Nitrogen primarily to avoid combustable fumes from creating. It won't have any fire suppression effect once a fire broke out.
      I don't think there's a lot that could be said about the NGS, it's a fully automated system, in fact we don't even have any flight deck indications about it, but only an indication at its panel in the wheel well.

  • @ahfreebird
    @ahfreebird 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Still would be nice to have a fire suppression system to give the pilots some more time! It seems like it's only just possible to get from 340 to the ground within 20 minutes.

    Why flaps 40 before evauation please?

    • @A330Driver
      @A330Driver  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a procedure carried forward from the passenger aircraft, where it serves to let the passengers vacating from the overwing exists slide down the flaps as the wings are approx 3m above the ground.

    At the end you said that the landing touch could be hard in order to stop the airplane safely, wouldn´t it be necessary to do a soft touchdown considering that part of the fuselage may have caught fire?

    • @tomw86
      @tomw86 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the plane is THAT badly damaged, this is the least of your worries. A controlled crash you can walk away from (with the help of firefighters) is safer than a go around….

    • @A330Driver
      @A330Driver  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty much as tomw86 says, just get that plane on the ground. It's wrecked anyway after such a fire, anything's better than a go around.

    • @A330Driver
      @A330Driver  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We just practiced something with smoke entering the flight deck on my last recurrent simulator session, it was quite scary! The airframe is however designed to minimize smoke entering the manned parts of the plane in the event of a cargo fire.

    A few questions. There was a lot of talk about rings in this superb tutorial. In real life how would your ring be if this happened to you? Twitching all the way down? 😁
    I had a pair of Adidas Terrax Gortex Trainers on the back of that airplane. Was you able to save them?
    Will FS2Crew work with the 737 Freighter? This I would love to know before purchasing FS2Crew.

    Thanks for your tutorial. How much oxygen do pilots have with masks on? As far as I know for passenger aircraft it is 15 min? And what about pilots ?

    • @A330Driver
      @A330Driver  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Igor,
      Pilotoxygen is stored in tanks and not chemically generated, so it lasts much longer.
      About 2 hours, depending on the pressure in the tank (you can monitor it on the panel on the aft overhead). Passenger oxygen in the 737 lasts for approx 12 minutes, which is sufficient for the time of an emergency descend plus some extra.

  • @Jannik_Stein
    @Jannik_Stein 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Now, the big question is would the plane be able to stay in the air for 15 minutes or would it be uncontrollable or even break apart?

    • @A330Driver
      @A330Driver  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Average times until you loose control with a fire are between 15 and 20 minutes, all accidents taken together we end up with 18 minutes. So not a lot of time left. But if you look at the timer you can see we can make it in 15 minutes from cruise level until we're on the ground.

      @@A330Driver On your video, the alarm sounded at the 10:00 mark and you came to a full stop on the runway at 29:40. so just under 20 minutes from cruise to landing. Very interesting video.
