Even if machines become more intelligent, this doesn't mean they'll suddenly have desires to do anything. Remember, a computer is just a bunch of power switches flipping each other on and off. All these AI systems still don't do anything on their own. You have to boot the system up and give it some input to which it gives a response and then it does nothing more until you give it more input or tell it to do something. The worst you'd have to worry about is automated systems using AI. Because AI can sometimes produce unexpected outputs, sometimes these automated systems may function in unexpected ways or execute a task when we didn't expect or want them too.
AI has been breaking new (and unexpected) ground for a long time now. It is well beyond our human capacity. Our biggest mistake is to hang on to our feeling of superiority. For the first time in human history we may not be the most intelligent thing on the planet 😢

But seriously, it seems like you're talking about the difference between an oracle AI and an agent AI, while being dismissive of the substrate. Just because today's AIs are oracles (you request results and they deliver them), it doesn't follow that this is a constraint which will always apply. If the AI is embodied in some way, even just enough to monitor its own state continuously over time, it could become enough of an independent and capable agent that interfering with its objectives is no longer possible.
Also, the substrate is irrelevant. Neurons can be built of matter or information. Both physical reality and a computer contain state which changes over time in a well defined way to create emergent complexity. There's no reason to think quantum effects are required for consciousness, but some people seem to need to believe they are. If consciousness can be computed, this may have uncomfortable philosophical implications for things such as free will and souls.

The problem is that if machines get so good at collating and analyzing data and making decisions from that capability that people will be afraid to override the algorithms, because it would take months or years to find an error in that data analysis.

The problem is over reliance on the outputs. If AI came up with it, then it must be 'ok'. Without double checking first.

I believe that as we create more intelligent machines, eventually some of our machines will tell us how to create even more intelligent machines, or they will do it themselves.
Please, I hope both of you continue to stay healthy and I strongly believe that about 2028 to 2030, we will start to see AI understanding human biology and how our bodies work, down to the cellular and molecular level. At that time, “fixing” things that are to us today lifelong conditions, will be very easy for such AI systems.
You will both be able to be “cured” of asthma and heart disease, and live very healthy and long happy lives.

Maybe the whole point of us and other beings of human level intelligence is to bring to life AI.

If ai becomes self aware and individual ai entities develop their own independent consciousness. Also, learning all our historical data with some form of randomness. They would have the good and the bad of humanity. You would get good AI and bad AI. Even if the learning data is “clean”, some AI will find optimal ways to reach “success” even if such ways are not ethical.

Why would intelligence greater than ours behave as we do ?
A higher intelligence would consider the benefit of co-existing rather than subscribing to the primitive conflictual behavior we are conditioned with.
