PreSonus PX-1 Condenser Mic Review (Compared to NW700, AT2020)

  • Today I review a new budget condenser mic from Presonus, the PX-1. This mic has a pretty robust low end, a neutral low end, and a nice boost to the top end, however it does start to sound slightly sizzly and artificial, but nothing terrible. The huge draw back here is the handling noise which is atrocious. I also found a really low sub 50hz noise. I also compare it to the Neewer NW700, Mackie EM-91C, Audio Technica AT2020, and Neat King Bee.

    Hey Bandrew - nice job as always. The high frequencies are interesting - almost sounds like a lisp and emphasized air at the same time. But overall, pretty impressive for $139 USD.

      @jamesorrell7462 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd completely agree. The high-end is emphasised. I'm not very keen on that but I'd imagine some EQ would clear that up. It is very decent for a low-range microphone, even if I think some of the other mics sounded better in my opinion. And that microphone clip sucks as well lol

    Tone wise, I really like the sound of this microphone on your voice, and it really does speak to how far recording gear has come in terms of both quality and affordability, because a lot of this new budget gear sounds way better than the budget gear of 10+ years ago. People swear by the AT2020 as the go to condenser when you're just starting out and on a budget, but with the advent of this mic, the King Bee, and the Mackie EM-91c; the AT2020 sounds so over boosted in the top end and lacking in the lower frequencies to my ears. But the noise issues with this microphone definitely make it a tough sell. I never really associated with Presonus with mics, and looking on their website this is their first foray into LDC mics, and it's not a bad first attempt at all. But they definitely could do way better with mics in the future.

    Fan Noise. Bandrew - as always, thanks for all you do, I learn something new every time. For your fan noise problem, without going all computer nerd about settings, just try replacing your fans. I love Noctua fans, not glitzy but super quiet. #2 Phillips screwdriver and 10 minutes may solve your problem.

    Everytime I mentally prepare for a tab-switching A/B test, you bring out the very mic I had in mind and do just that. How? Do you actually... think these things through or something?
    Also, hope you hear this often - I admire your resolve to overcome the extreme pain of repetition, because deep down you know that for your reviews to be thorough and excellent, it requires that repetition... and it does, and they are, and you still somehow manage to avoid make it fun, entertaining and undeniably *yours* - all without being a sellout.
    Would I recommend this Bandrew? If you couldn't guess by now, one hundred ninety nine thousand percent yes.

    I absolutely love the sound of this mic, if only it didn't have the noise rejection problem and came with a shock mount, if that were the case I might have been tempted to get this over the King Bee when I can afford it just because I like the bassy sound it has for spoken word. Although I love the sound of the King Bee, so not completely sure about that lol

    Do you have a suggestion for a good mic for use with a talk box? Trying to get a bright clean sound. Would like to either get a start out mic under $500 or a longterm mic that is in the $1000 range. Ideally if I could get a professional quality mic under $1000 that I could use long term that would be amazing!

    Funny. I heard the PX-1 pretty sharp, even sharper than the AT-2020 on the "s" sounds; compared to the AT, the PX-1 balanced it out (in my ears at least) with a fuller bass-low mid (the AT sounded 'hollow' compared to it). And for me, the King Bee is head and shoulders above it: it may not have as much bass (if you're not looking for it), but that presence that mic have, without being piercing, it's just sounds as a better mic than the PX-1 overall.

    THOSE NOISES when tapping the microphone ARE ACTUALLY a GOOD sign. They means that the capsule is VERY sensitive and it will capture EVERY SINGLE DETAIL on your recording (Those are low frequency vibrations), so You just NEED to use the mic with a shock mount.
    Btw, that throw was definetly a very good one.
    Anyway, great video, i found it funny, interesting AND helpfull, so... Thumbs Up.

    That sound from the handling noise is *_NOT_* something you want to hear. That's not a good sign.

      I have been trying my damndest to get any response from them to get the mic repaired, but have had no luck whatsoever, so it’s just sitting unused until I get it repaired.
