  • This is a short video that highlights the Rose-breasted Grosbeaks that migrate northward through Alabama in the Spring. We are fortunate that they like to come and stay for a couple of weeks, refueling for the remaining of their trip, with hopefully a few more fueling stops on the way.
Feeders serve an important role in helping these magnificent birds and other migrating birds make the trip. Most birds migrate in the evening hours over night, which is just amazing considering that they are navigating without daylight to highlight landmarks.
Around 60.6 million birds migrated northward over Shelby County Alabama over a 3-month period (March, April and May). Also consider that Springtime is a time where there are storms and tornadoes. These birds navigate around storms. They drop down into the trees searching for food and water and if they find a good spot, they may stay a few days or longer. If you provide a good setup, they may decide to stay a little longer. We are lucky to have them stick around for about two weeks.
Please consider hosting your own feeder. There are plenty of videos on how to host birds on kenlittleblog.com as well as links to two live streams and a blog section to learn more.
