This was the first Horror film to win Best Makeup at the 1982 Academy Awards, and it was the first of 7 Oscars for Makeup effects artist Rick Baker. His last film was The Wolfman released in 2010, then in 2014, he retired from making special effects, implying that CGI would change the Hollywood industry forever.

I always enjoy the quick ending and cut to the credits and music. Like the director John Landis is saying he doesn't care about your feelings, cope. Each attack by the werewolf is so quick, and then moves to the next scene. Extremely well done, and John Landis is known for directing comedy films, in fact some of the most popular comedies of the 80s were directed by him. He is a huge fan of horror films though.

Some of the songs you like:
"Blue Moon" was written in 1934 by Rogers & Hart. It's been recorded by so many different people, it's become what's known as a standard. The versions in the movie are performed by Sam Cooke (1959), the Marcels (1961), and Bobby Vinton (1963).
"Bad Moon Rising" was written by John Fogarty and performed by him and his band, Creedence Clearwater Revival, in 1969. It's a song about the apocalypse Fogarty believed was coming.
The song in the background for the shower-and-lovemaking scene is "Moondance," which was written and recorded by Van Morrison and released in 1970. It's been a hit ever since.

There really are pubs like the Slaughtered Lamb in that part of England. I went on a camping holiday there in the 70s where the local pub was called The Pig's Nose. A very strange place. I scored a 180 playing darts and the pub went silent. In London the tube stations are very scary places late at night, with countless echoing tunnels that branch off and long escalators that never end. Haha, I just got a shiver down my back remembering one late night down there. I have never decided if this movie is comedy first, horror second, or vice versa. Jenny Agutter is of course welcome in any movie. If nothing else, the constant songs about the moon are all wonderful. Frank Oz (the voice of many muppets) had his moment on screen, hence the Muppets appearing on tv during the film.

John Landis, the director, wrote this script in 1968 when he was 19 years old. He was working as a crew member on the film "Kelly's Heroes" in Yugoslavia, first as a gofer and then later as the director's assistant when the AD became ill and had to leave the location. Landis got his first big break when he was chosen to direct "Animal House" in 1978, which became a huge hit, and then "The Blues Brothers" in 1980, an even bigger success. That gave him enough clout to get "American Werewolf" made, which had been rejected by every Hollywood producer and studio for years. He was told no one would watch a horrifying comedy movie or a comedic horror film. I saw it the night it opened in the summer of 1981 and loved it. It's one of only 3 films I saw twice in the theater...along with "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" and "Raiders Of The Lost Ark".
It's pretty unique and a groundbreaking film, and it seems people either dig it or are completely confused by it. But almost everyone has the same reaction to the end: "WHAT? That's it????"

Great reaction to what i truly believe to be the greatest horror movie ever made. In fact one of the greatest movies period. It traumatised me as a 7 year old, but in my teens i fell in love with the practical effects, the writing, the cast performances, and the Juxtaposition of the very visceral horror and the almost slapstick humour. That chase scene through the claustrophobic London tube still gives me chills. The way you expect to see the Werewolf at any moment follow the guy around the corner, just a few paces behind, but you never do. Landis never allows us to see the beast, knowing full well that it's the anticipation that creates the tension, the tension thus creating fear... A true masterpiece.

After david and his friend are attacked by a Regular wolf, David is injured and ends up in a coma.
He is taken to hospital and faces internal self judgement for his cowardly actions until his death.
    There is no werewolf.
The villagers just believe in a local myth.
The film already shows us dreams within dreams.

My all-time favourite werewolf movie, I just love the fun it has with the story and the practical effects are so amazingly well done, and the music choices are top notch.
And it has the line "A naked American man stole my balloons." 🤣

You just saw one of the greatest werewolf movies of all time, directed by John Landis and Rick Baker did the amazing practical special effects. This was a true comedy/horror classic.
NOW, please react to *THE HOWLING!* Also from 1981 😎

Great reaction to a classic movie still one of the best man to wolf transformations in a movie without cgi to this date, You should check out "Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001)" a very impressive movie it is in French language "Le Pacte des loups" and has English subtitles but one hell of a film.
Set in southern France it is a historical/fantasy set around the real event of a huge wolf with red fur that would attack ,kill and eat the villagers and farmers who dare work or travel alone between 1765 and 1767 they called it "the Beast of Gévaudan".

My favourite movie reactor reacting to a great movie starring one of my favourite actresses :).
In my youth I went out with a girl who looked like Jenny Agutter (but with longer hair) and we watched this movie ... then I had to go out and walk my dog across the fields (country boy here :)) ... and it was a full moon ... and it was foggy ... and then my dog crouched down and started to growl aggressively at something out there in the darkness like I had never seen her do before ... ... ... needless to say that was not a calm few minutes but it appears to have been a mystery and not a werewolf ... or was it? :chuckles:

This was a very popular movie when it came out. People talked about the special effects (and are still talking about it). It became a cult classic. The mix of comedy (not even true comedy, but you know what I mean) and horror/suspense is what makes this movie stand out. How easy it would have been to mess up the balance, but give the actors credit- they act like you and I would if someone came in to a hospital claiming to have been attacked by a werewolf.

Loving your channel Kamilla, keep it up. The practical effects in this are fantastic, the change scene specifically is horrific, really clever camera cuts throughout that scene too. Id say the practical effects are up there with The Thing. Stands the test of time.

The director of this movie(John Landis) made a vampire movie about 10 years after this movie that like this was a horror/black comedy. Innocent Blood(1992). Worth a watch.

Fun reaction!!! Hoo boy I love this movie. Saw it at a drive-in when I was 10 and it changed my life!
Those effects really were groundbreaking at the time. What I think makes this movie hold up is the perfect balance between horror and humor; it went back and forth between them at just the right times to be jarring in the right way!
Did you catch that the smarmy American ambassador at the hospital was Frank Oz, the voice (& muppeteer) of Yoda? Also a very accomplished director. John Landis likes to have directors make cameos in his movies.

Interesting fact about this movie, the guy at 7:40 in this video, Mr. Collins, is actually Frank Oz. Know who that is? He is the puppeteer behind Miss Piggie, Fozzie Bear, Cookie Monster, Grover, Burt and yes, Yoda. Notice they were watching The Muppets on TV in David's dream? Cool little hint, huh?

Mr. Collins' line, "dumbass kids........never appreciate anything you do for 'em" -- kind of amusing due to the fact that the actor was Frank Oz, famously the voice of a ton of Sesame Street and Muppets characters, like the lady pig at 11:06.

I really like this movie. Most other werewolf movies show the transformation from man to werewolf as something that wouldn't hurt that much. Having your body actually turn into a dog would be the most excruciating form of pain a person can go through. This movie shows it better than any other movie.
If they had today's technology back then I don't think it would be as good. We've gotten a little lazy in some ways and would rather have computers do the work that should be done by hand.
