Thank you for the advice. I was sent to a special education class right after kindergarten simply because of my severe visual disability. The teachers argued over my capabilities right in front of me, forbidding me to get involved in sports programs. If I were given the opportunity to put in my honest effort then pull out, then I would have had no problems. However, they forcibly sidelined me, then put on my report card that I was anti social because I never took part in any sports. This took place in the mid 60s. I'm so glad that today's children have the backup that I was deprived of.
I love how this video breaks down all the different aspects of special education and what it involves and entails. Highly informative and provides a lot of useful information.
my son who has autism was in many special education classes. unfortunately. the teaching staff were woefully undertrained and quite honestly didn't know what they were doing. he was frequently locked in padded cells and no one did anything about it until the head of special education stepped in for my child and others like him. see my post below. there were a couple of heroes including a special education administrator who stepped in and made sure that our kids with disabilities were treated with kindness and fairly. he was an amazing man who always looked out for our kids with special needs. he passed away a couple of years ago, leaving behind many heartbroken parents and staff.
I'm beginning to explore changing careers and moving into Special Education. Thank you for such a succinct and easy to understand overview. REALLY PERFECT!
I'm also looking to change careers. I was in special education as a kid and although I believe my schedule education teacher was absolutely wonderful with the information and of research being brought up today. I would like to give these kids a better opportunity than I had so that they are even more prepared to go out into a world that doesn't care that they're different
I really liked all the information in this video. As a parent of a special education child, this video was very helpful and provided a more clear insight into eligibility, legislation, modification, curriculum, inclusion, and much more! Thank you!
a good teacher can make al the difference in the world for our students with special needs. it is stunning how many staff are untrained and unsympathetic to children who struggle.
Thank you for the exploration of special education, covering legislation, instructional strategies, inclusion, and family engagement for students with disabilities. Keep it up!
Thank you! I was sent to Special Education right after kindergarten due to my Negative thoughts disability, I am a disabled student at 5th grade and still am in Special Education today! Thanks!
I love how this video was organized and how it provided so much information and examples in a short amount of time! The information that was given was broken down and explained perfectly.
Great breakdown and examples provided in each section. Special Education has so many areas to cover in order to provide the best support for our students and this video helps with making sure all aspects of it are covered and the different things that can be done in the classroom to help them succeed!
As someone who used to be in special education, it was horrible! I started taking it back in kindergarten because the teacher was concerned over the fact that I used to pace back and forth a lot and fidget as well. They put me as well as other students in a separate classroom to do separate schoolwork. Ever since I took it it made me feel different and made me feel like I was too stupid to do anything. Back in middle school my special Ed teacher at the time tried to take me out of German class because she thought I couldn’t handle learning a different language and also put me in special Ed math and English classes (they didn’t teach us grade level math). Luckily I was able to take German but the special Ed teachers still tried to talk me into not taking it again in later years. On the plus side though I was able to get into a regular English class in 8th grade and eventually got out of special Ed as a whole at the end of my sophomore year but I am not in a grade level math class. Right now I am a senior and although I’m out of special ed I still hate it to this day and worried if my future will be effected because of it.
I know the feeling! Back when I was in high school (Class of 2019). I used to be embarrassed because I was in one of those classes too. But I promise after high school it doesn’t effect you. You can still live a normal life.
Being able to observe everything that has to do with the process of special education in a broken down scenario is excellent. This defiantly allowed me to get a complete overview of what i was not understanding.
This video gives a great and concise breakdown while it also provides different kinds of aspects towards Special Education. I like the examples provided in this video, it was very useful information. The explanation is straight forward and it is a very helpful resource. It is very well organized and structured, the visuals highlight the key points of what it involves in a short amount of time. Thank you so much.
Thank you for the advice. As a someone would has worked in the Special Ed. field and being a parent of a special ed child, this information is so helpful. Love the way it is broken down and straight forward.
I’m attending University of Tennessee to be a special education major It’s the one thing I’ve known my whole life I want to do and I can’t wait to one day have my own class of these beautiful amazing kids ♥️
Thank you for this white board video, I love the way everything was explained. It's not just being in a special education classroom or being a special education teacher. There is so much involved to help our students. We want to know and be able to help our students to the fullest extent. From LRE, to modifications/accommodations, to how the family can even be involved to help. It takes a village to be able to help out the students.
it does take a village and unfortunately the village is not always there or caring. my own son with an ASD spent too much time in classrooms that our district refers to as structured learning programs. they have lockable padded cells in them. which the staff doesn't hesitate to toss kids in and lock the door. there have been a few heroes along the way including a few heroes lncluding a special education director who went to bat for us and made sure that our kids with disabilities were fairly treated by staff, unfortunately staff frequently didn't know what they were doing and thought nothing of abusing vulnerable students. it happened many times to my son. no child deserves to be treated with such distain.
Fantastic content! I appreciate how you've provided concrete examples of mistakes and offered practical solutions. Your advice will undoubtedly help teachers navigate the job market outside of education more effectively. Well done!
Loved this breakdown of all things special education. Such a great overview in a short amount of time. I will definitely make my way back and use these objectives for sped teaching.
Great video because it summarizes all Special ed education easy and highlighting the best points to consider. It covers all the sections in order and easy to understand.
I love this videos breakdown of special education. Great informative video that definitely helps with the history and information for Special Education.
Thank you for the break down. Having a student in a less restrictive environment or further restrictive environment is a concept that some teacher may not understand. Especially when they need accommodations.
i have an Ma in special education and my son has an autism spectrum disorder. he was treated horribly in abusive special education classes. fortunately there were a few heroes along the way who included a special education director who went to bat for him after he'd been locked in a padded cell by the incompetent staff who taught in is special education classroom in middle school. they locked him in and called the police. when the policewoman arrived she went into the cell and roughly nudged him with her foot. he gently moved his leg in her direction. he did not attempt to kick her or to leave. she then threatened to arrest him and take him to jail. I was in the classroom and I was shocked and appalled at her actions towards a young boy. fortunately there were a few heroes along the way including a special education director who looked out for our kids. he told me once that there was a class in a school on the other side of town that had one of the cells in it. it had a camera in the cell. once after a student had been locked in, the superintendant of the district told him not to show the video to the mother because she'd get the wrong idea. he told me that he showed the mother the video because she'd get the right idea. he was a hero to me and to many other parents of students with disabilities. he was also a hero to many staff. he used to tell the story about when he worked at boulder which is a facility where they house people with disabilities in Montana. there was a child who had downs syndrome his parents never came to visit him. the boy died and the parents didn't come. as he told the story he had tears running down his face. he told me the story at an IDEA PTA (individuals with disabilities education act PTA) meeting at my house. we had one of the first disability focused PTAs in the country. years ago the local high school housed students with disabilities in a small rundown building across the street. he would walk over and escort the kids with disabilities back to the main school building so that they could attend classes and have lunch with the rest of the students. He passed away a couple of years ago leaving behind many heartbroken parents and staff members. he is still missed by many of us. he looked out for our kids with disabilities and supported them and we appreciated it.
As a disabled person if you try to work hard just like everybody else people look down on u for trying and that why disabled shaming people destroys there confidence and disabled people don’t get treated like a human being they get treated like sub humans and if a disabled person ever going to make it in this world they would have to advocate for themselves and not rely on people and fight hard for what they want and not give a rat ass what people tell them
Man when they put me in special ed classes back in the 90’s early 00’s they just segregated me in the cubicle and they said I was just “slow”. As an adult I was finally diagnosed with ADHD. I wonder if they had done it differently back then, would I be more successful? Ah well
I was proud to be a special olympian for one year and from Worcester, Massachusetts I I was proud to be where I was Boston University dorm rooms for the 1st time I ever experienced anything like it was you like it it was probably your boat I don't know what she was weak long but it was a really good experience for me because I cause I had to feel that I needed to feel special and I got to feel special like any special needs kids really really get to do and I'm sure it's fun for them and it was fun for me
You should add to the purpose of special education as being to meet the unique needs of the student as a result of their disability BUT ALSO to ensure access and participation in general education to the maximum extend appropriate. It's not just LRE: it's literally the purpose of special education.
New long term sub here and more than a bit overwhelmed (lesson plans and grading plus considerations for IEP, BIP, 504, GEI…😅) but your video is VERY helpful. Thank you!
very good and helpful information some of the information i knew about because I am a teacher assistant in Special education but in the behavioral unit
I was in a special school. It was not at all prison like or anything of that sort. They did bring those who needed medications those medications. That may have been part of the partial hospitalization that they offered whenever it was needed. In places like those you might have one teacher who handles most of your classes except for art and science. Rather than riding a normal bus it would sometimes be a van since there were not that many students on a particular route. Those teachers and all of the other staff there were very helpful and supportive. Of course they changed locations and by now none of the teachers who knew me would still be there. I would think they retired by now. I am so old that when I went back a couple weeks ago to ask for my records I found that they were "purged" 20 years ago. Thankfully I had no real need for them and was only curious about them. I am sure that there must be some way to get them like maybe from the Board Of Education in Harrisburg.
Hi Frank, In your video you forgot the 3rd most important part for QUALIFYING for Sped. They MUST need specialized instruction. 3 Qualifiers. Love the Video!
I really enjoy your videos. Thank you! I do have an issue with your definition of Least Restrictive Environment. The IEP team is bound by IDEA to ensure that placement decisions for any given student are considered to be the Least Restrictive Environment. So, LRE is most definitely relative. If a child truly needs a placement such as a school totally devoted to students with special needs, or even a residential setting, that setting is then considered to be the LRE for that student. I agree, schools that are wholly designed for students with special needs are restrictive ones, but if the IEP team members are performing their roles in the manner to which they should be, students that are placed in these settings through the IEP process are placed appropriately -- and placed in the LRE that best serves their needs. Additionally, what are your thoughts on using people-first language? As a lifelong special educator, I do try to call attention to the individual first and then the disability, but I also know that many individuals with disabilities do not prefer the usage of person-centered language.
You are welcome to come to north high school and show the middle school students what it means to stop the people from congressing others and the teachers
I am 16 special needs student for ADHD but not a saver as my siblings I am in a regular class special needs class for my math and English I get yelled at every day for the way I prefer to learn I listen to the lesson without looking my teachers think not looking at them means I can't learn but I learn perfectly fine still to this day I'm not being heard on how I learn
When a child with an IEP is educationally placed in another school does the sending school still have responsibilities towards that child...sports, programs, or after school programs? I have found your videos very educational as a parent.
I need advice. When I was a Freshman in high school, my biology teacher patronized me (albeit, unintentionally, I'll admit). See, the second day, she had approached me at my locker after biology class. She put her hand on my shoulder and said something like, “If you ever have any questions in class, just ask.” She said this kind of slowly actually. Question is, why did she come to me? I don’t remember making a “struggling student” impression on her; the first day, I remember nothing. The second day, I was simply working on an in-class assignment with a partner. Not to mention the times she had the Special Ed worker help me with biology assignments. The first time, when we were partnered with a classmate for an experiment, the Special ED woman came in and my teacher had her partner with me. The second time, my teacher said she was here to help me and a certain classmate-who was a total slacker in class-come up with an idea for our upcoming biology project. But the thing is, I already had a project in mind. It very well sounds like the teacher didn’t think I could think of a plan on my own, while trusting the rest of the class to. Well, just because I didn’t generally have a quick understanding (especially in science), doesn’t automatically mean l would have no project in mind. Although I know she respected my hard work and personality,, I actually question if she respected my intellect and cognition. People tend to look down on my fellows with learning disabilities (who are such pathetic bigots by the way). Now here is the _current_ problem. I reunited with the teacher outside my job (her new neighborhood), and she told me she's gonna become a Special Ed teacher this upcoming fall. I can't let that happen. You all understood now how she spoke to me in biology, making me feel belittled. That's just it: being in Special Ed can already be tough, because of the insecurities of having a learning disability and requiring accommodations. It won't help if _she's_ the teacher there. I need you guys to give me advice quick, before September comes. How do I convince her _not_ to teach Special Ed? I'm not gonna be direct and honest and tell her _she_ isn't right for it. I have to find a way to persuade her the job isn't great, so that she'll decline herself. I have to protect those poor disabled learners from her. Please....someone help me.
I think you should explain her your perspective that why she should not become a special ed. teacher. Cause' as one would become a teacher, he/she should also have a mind to understand others. I hope this might help🤞
@@rajeshchalia1942 she didn’t seem to understand me though, when I was her student. She seemed oblivious to the condensation she was giving me, wouldn’t you agree?
thank you for this beneficial information video you have shared with us. very cleared exlanation..God bless you sir. more ower to you and to your channel!
Well I was kind of hoping to get to know what to expect when pulled but the special ed teacher as I was told it will happen soon. But this is cool to know.
The thing with special education the system still has many flaws the student still has to have Determination and has to work twice as hard than a person who not disabled and I’m living proof of that I had to fight all my life in order to move up in life. the sad reality most people don’t give a damn about disabled people growth and it’s a never ending battle u either advocate and use leverage to get far or u remain weak and accept things the way they are with out trying this world doesn’t respect the weak
I was in special ed and sometimes I schooled the Teacher like I don’t remember what the lecture was but he mentioned it being called H2O which that was very odd because H2O means water and he wasn’t talking about water so I raised my hand and told him H2O means Water he was all like really? Like he had no clue what he was talking about. What’s even more shocking is he has a Masters Degree. Are they giving those out like Halloween Candy or something?
Hey,do you teach one one one , because I was in special ed and I still need the help at my age and I'm trying to do get help with things for I can help my son has he gets older my son is a toddler
When I come off maybe rude but it's true coming from a special needs student I had nothing but a rough time after chinnigarh Kenny gallon just because I didn't have the mental of amphysical education I needed
3-9-22 I was in special Ed wen I was 7 years & up, I was called retardoe from regular kids & special Ed kids but why were they in special Ed, I had to take P,E with regular kids & I hated P,E, I wasn't good in P,E.
Now this just my 2 cent no one knows you better but yourself! Now I remember I was in high school taking regular classes Math, Science, History etc. Now my grades on some of the subject was good beside math was my worst subject. But all of a sudden they pulled me outta my regular classes put me in a class called life skills now I think they pick and chooses who need classes like those. Get out find a job and be independent on your own don’t get me wrong it was good experience for real world adventure for living on your own with bills and moving out your parent house. I didn’t like they move me life skill and cooking classes, I really wanted my high school dilopma. Some ppl have to get GED. Special Ed Dilopma is another way of them saying you pass now you can move on but certain college will accept it if you plan on going for trade though.
I'm not saying that what these teachers do is easy but it comes natural to me for some reason I can reach people people no matter how old the young I can at least get on to the level without talking down to them that's the one thing I hated was dayeah it was date no matter how what class I was I was always talked down to and I didn't even say nothing cause I just didn't even cause I just didn't want an application that's all like that's all I thought was I was going to stop an application if I said you don't have to talk down to me
Haha you know whats funny, as a kid I was so lazy they thought I was mentally disabled. Now i'm making a's and b's with hundreds in every class. Its sad because that whole sped thing could have ruined my education for the rest of my life.
I absolutely love your videos! I have been using them to prepare for my teacher certification exam and they have been extremely helpful. I was wanting to know if you would be creating video(s) outlining and explaining how teachers are to promote student's performance in both math and English language arts?

This video was a quick 12 minute overview about everything SpEd. I enjoyed watching because it is like a refresher videro.
It was a very informative video to watch about the procedures and how to go about forming the lesson plans for the students.

These people have been texting me over and over again and I am trying to stop them from doing something that they shouldn’t have been doing
I love your artistic representation of special education. Drives down the message more
You are welcome to come to north high school and show the middle school students what it means to stop the people from congressing others and the teachers
Thanks something sweet
I am 16 special needs student for ADHD but not a saver as my siblings I am in a regular class special needs class for my math and English I get yelled at every day for the way I prefer to learn I listen to the lesson without looking my teachers think not looking at them means I can't learn but I learn perfectly fine still to this day I'm not being heard on how I learn
Sams with my son,hes 15
You better speak up to a counselor or at your next IEP meeting
When a child with an IEP is educationally placed in another school does the sending school still have responsibilities towards that child...sports, programs, or after school programs? I have found your videos very educational as a parent.
You'll find my experience under "Marleen"
I literally broke down crying after watching this
This is a wonderful resource. Thank you for the visuals and the clear, concise explanations!
Your videos are really cool. What do you use to make them? My students would love this
I need advice.
@@johnrainsman6650 yup I do agree
@@rajeshchalia1942 and you also agree she was being belittling and patronizing in class, even if unintentionally?
@@johnrainsman6650 hmmm absolutely
what is IEP?
Individualized Educational Plan
Thank you so much! I just pressed LIKE and subscribed it!
Do you have a lesson plan of special education sir?
Were I found the last power point presentation?
Great job!! Thank you. Are there books or further resources for parents and/or teachers which you recommend?
I appreciate the advice, but do you have scholarly references to back up the suggestions you give?
Hello Rebecca, most of what I cover in the video covers federal and state law, such asl the LRE, IEP, Mods, Accomdations, etc.
Good morning, where can I purchase this chat
I love this summary! Thank you so much!
Thanks in assisting as with the skills👍
thank you for this beneficial information video you have shared with us. very cleared exlanation..God bless you sir. more ower to you and to your channel!
This is so great and well explained. Thank you!!
Great breakdown!!
great breakdown and explanation.
Thank you for this presentation It is very helpful for me
Thank you for the information.!
NOTE: this is for intvervention special ed. Not autism special ed.
I bet you have an IEP 😭
@@Ab-se1zj SHUT UP! And... why?
great video .. thank you so much .. it would be great if you could further expand on curriculum and teaching strategies
You are the best. Is there any way to print these sheets as a PDF?
When I come off maybe rude but it's true coming from a special needs student I had nothing but a rough time after chinnigarh Kenny gallon just because I didn't have the mental of amphysical education I needed
Can I get this power point presentation please?
Excellent way of explaing ...good going
Thanks for making these videos! They have been very helpful
Great video. Thank you!
thank you so very much for this video!
Hi! i wonder which country are you from?
Have you got a Facebook or Twitter page that I could follow.
LOVE THIS VIDEO👍👍💖💖💜💜
I love you videos. Thank you so much for them!
Random thing i wanna say: when bro pulled up the modifications and i saw the word banks, my science addiction said: yessir
Think you for helping kids and people like me
I absolutely love your videos! I have been using them to prepare for my teacher certification exam and they have been extremely helpful. I was wanting to know if you would be creating video(s) outlining and explaining how teachers are to promote student's performance in both math and English language arts?
Best of luck!
Splendid work! What app did you use?
