I've owned my '21 JT 14 months - it's my first Jeep, and I LOVE my Jeep truck! First time I got "ducked" I was a little freaked out, mainly because our family was going thru some legal issues, and I didn't know if it was a tracking device, an IED, or what. My grown son noticed me staring down at this little duck in my hand and he says, "You just got ducked! It's a Jeep thang." When I got home I did a little research & that eased my mind, as well as bringing a smile to my face.
My JT has been ducked about 14-15 times (averaging once a month). I visited Amazon to check pricing, and now I'm buying them 100 at a time (less expensive that way). I even bought business cards to hang around the neck of my giveaways. In these first 14 months of ownership I've ducked somewhere around 250-275 Jeeps. I'm 67 y.o., and this is a new hobby for me. Retirees gotta redeem their time somehow.
Sometimes I'll hand 'em out at the gas station. One time I pulled up next to another Jeep at a stop light, and after getting their attention, I tossed it thru their open roof. They applauded me. Although 95% of my ducking has been "secretive" (hitting up empty Jeeps in parking lots), I've only had one duck rejected. An older 2-door - though doorless with a bikini top - was sitting at a red light on a 4-lane, with an older couple in it. The lady was riding shotgun, and as I approached (slowing to stop at the light) I announced, "Here - CATCH!" as I tossed a unicorn duck to the lady. She bobbled it, then caught it & stared at it, then exclaimed, 'Oh no" and she threw it back at my JT, hitting my closed back window, and the poor little ducky tumbled to the pavement. So, my kind gesture triggered her to litter? I turned my JT around and rescued the unicorn from the road before it got smashed by the traffic.
Most of the ducking objections I've noticed are on forums & in comments (like here on YT), and appear to come from apparent "macho" men who SO idolize their ride that they fear you'll dirty-up or otherwise damage their vehicle just by placing a good-will gift on it. Kinda sad if you ask me. It's a vehicle - a means of transportation - it'll get dirty when you drive it in the rain. And for those who go off-roading, their machines will get muddy, paint-scratched, and occasionally banged up pretty good. So, what's the beef? Life's too short to whine about everything. Grow a heart of flesh, and reject the negativity that hardens your heart. 🦆🦆O|||||||O

What a fuddy-duddy, I had a Jeep girl come up and give me my first duck at the gas pump today. I've known about the ducks and Jeep-wave since 2016, but only got one duck. I've never got ducked before and told her she was my first and thanked her. Kinda felt good getting ducked, try having some fun with it dude rather than going Karen on it.

My .02: I’m a damn near 50 y/o father of two younger kids; It doesn’t bother me when someone ducks my rig. I’ve got many, many, many more things to be bent out of shape over in this life. My kids enjoy getting and passing out ducks and it helps bring some new blood into our little community. A fair number of people I see having a problem with it; seem to be the same kind of people that are insecure in other areas of their life.
I’m climbing off my soapbox now but am leaving you with this: It’s never a bad thing to try and spread a little joy or reinforce your community. Even if you’re not down with this particular trend, just be glad that there are people supporting Jeep Life in their own way.

My Jeep love goes back to the 1970s, and my dad's orange CJ. My first adult new car purchase was a Wrangler in 1997. I have driven nothing but Jeep, until circumstances beyond my control made me give up my Wrangler in 2017. Now, in 2024, I'm back with a new Wrangler, and the duck thing is freaking me out. I got "ducked" within a week and I'm on the fence about whether I'm going to participate. But I confess, my duck is on the dash.

I’m not sure where your from but I live in New Hampshire I have never met anyone who has had a problem with “ducking”…
I always leave the duck tail down in the driver side door handle.
Usually people up here that don’t “want” the duck will just put it on someone else’s jeep… this has happened to me many times. As for you making this a negative issue it’s not, this is also how trends start and how cool it is that the Jeep life has embraced this simple concept and personality when I get a duck It really makes me feel good and that someone likes my Jeep!! As for me I don’t duck every Jeep just the ones I like, color, build… ect
Again personally this is a super awesome idea and I’m glad we do this as a family… I love getting and ducking people’s Jeeps and love the original idea behind it all…

Betting most Jeep owners buy the ducks to put on their dashboard in an attempt to make themselves feel accepted.

    A couple rebuttal points:
    1) I think it's fine to have new traditions in the Jeep community as long as they don't replace old ones, like The Wave!
    2) To your rubber waste point- if you get a duck and aren't into it, I'd suggest passing it on rather than trashing it; especially if you see a Jeep with ducks that you'd know they're into it.
    3) some community guidelines about duck placement should help, on the mirrors or door handle are ok. The best spot if someone has it would on a step plate. But I don't think people should be moving other people's wiper blades and things like that to put a duck.

  • @mwp597

To add to the Duck giving. Even the Jeep wave is not necessary. I get tiered of waving to every Jeep i pass on the road. As someone who daily drives a (relatively) clean low mile xj currently at factory ride height, 95% of the waves I get are from other xj drivers, which I happily return because I'm also an e30 owner and that has been common between owners of more uncommon vehicles to see on the road in current year.

I agree that people should not be setting things on other people's vehicles. If you get ducks anyway and don't want to participate, just donate them to a school if you don't want them. Teachers and school staff always buy small toys for positive student behavior reinforcement and buy them with their own money. Kids would go nuts for them and it would be better than giving them candy. Hey, or give them away at Halloween, etc.

I could never imagine owning a new jeep, I have respect for the older ones though. New jeeps are absolute trash, they’re not jeep anymore and haven’t been for 20 years.

Its also a good way to get pulled over, dashboards with clutter can trigger a traffic stop, it's a distraction.

Had a few Wranglers throughout my life. I'm not doing the Jeep wave and sure as hell NOT putting ducks on my dash. You're all corny.
