The Western Way Mayo video: • The Western Way (Galwa...
Hello!
Hope you enjoyed our short summary of the Western Way (Galway). Here’s some more information about it, and links to everything else we’ve made about this trail:
○ TRAIL DESCRIPTION ○
● County: Galway
● Official length: 55km
● What we walked: Roughly the same
● Start/end points: Leenane / Oughterrard. We walked this trail from north to south. Most people walk it the other way round, and it’s probably a nicer walk that way.
● Number of days:
● Trail difficulty: 2/5
● Trail Quality: 3/5
● Views/area: 4/5
● Day 1: Leenane - Connemara Hostel // 6km
● Day 2: Connemara Hostel - Maam // 24km
● Day 3: Maam - Oughterrard // 24km
Camping/accommodation: There are B&Bs all along the trail, and camping is possible in a couple of places weather depending. This Galway section of the trail is well spaced out in regards to stages and accommodation.
Leenane: B&B’s a plenty. Possibly camping back near the waterfalls.
Connemara hostel: for people that don’t usually like to stay in hostels, there are a number of private rooms, and downstairs there are a number of really nice living rooms and quite places to relax. It also looked like there was fancier accommodation right next door to the hostel. For people who do like to stay in hostels, this was a nice one! Camping isn’t explicitly listed on the website, but if you ask they do actually have a lawn that you can camp on, and showers/bathrooms etc.
Maam: The only accommodation we found here was on Airbnb, and the woman who had us stay was incredibly nice! Apparently people camp near the bridge in Maam, but we had a farmer warn us not to camp there that night as all the rain had swollen the river quite close to bursting.
Oughterrard: We didn’t stay in Oughterrard, but took a bus that evening. On our long walk into the town we passed a number of B&Bs that would be perfect for stopping at, as the long walk in is all road, and is maybe a (long) stroll you can enjoy in to have dinner (did I mention that last bit felt rather long?). We were too tired at this point to really notice if there was any camping near the town itself.

🌿LEAVE NO TRACE IRELAND 🌿
Leave No Trace is all about knowing how you impact places when there - be it sports, waterways, hiking, camping - anything outdoors. It is so easy for us to damage nature and the natural environment, that it’s everyone’s job to learn how to take care of it, and learn the best ways to do things. This is going to take time, but if we don’t do it, there’ll be no nature left for all our adventures.
