    35:42 - 37:38 Actually, DualSense's PC Support is already partially supported Wireless Connectivity via Bluetooth since last year, in an official capacity. *It just that Sony didn't advertise it (and requires a controller firmware update)* , it and it took several months for some users to discover it.
    Turns out: the Sony Input API was stealthily updated as part of the DualSense Edge PC Support, so if a game were to be shipped (or updated) with DualSense Edge support: then you'd get Native wireless connectivity via Blueteooth. Do note that Haptic Feedback isn't supported due to "Bluetooth software limitations", hence: "partial support".
    meanwhile, third-party solutions already support it since day 1 (minus for Haptic Feedack, due to the same reasons above). it's quite baffling how Sony continually drops the ball in terms of their own Controller Support in the PC Space, especially when it isn'tt easily accessible to all developers without SDK.

    After having a conversation with somebody who worked at Microsoft for years, I have a better understanding of how they operate behind-the-scenes. Where their employee culture is second nature to the bottom line. They choose that bottom line over quality in their games. Which is why we don’t see many, if any games, especially this generation that push the boundaries of what the system can do.
    Now, that employee seemed to think that this isn’t a Phil Spencer issue. This is a issue that has him trapped in between corporate and his aspirations as a game fan himself. The problem is, the budget for these AAA titles has spiraled out of control. Instead of focusing on making it easier for developers to develop, most companies have simply made the hardware and hope that developers develop around it.
    Which is why we don’t see many third-party games, taking advantage of the power and features that these consoles have. Simply developing like they did last generation and using horsepower instead of features that would help make their games that much better. Whether that is an issue with the SDK for these consoles or they are just developing for the lowest denominator… It hasn’t done this generation all that well.
    As we still haven’t seen the best of what these consoles can do. If you ask me, one of the best examples is Metro: Exodus. As they are showcasing raytracing at its best with bounce lighting at 4K/ 60. Something that no one thought would be possible on these consoles. If they were able to do it, other developers can do it, but don’t. The game looks phenomenal because of it. So why haven’t we seen any first party examples?
    As I said to this employee from Microsoft, without the software showcasing, the power of the console… It’s tough to relay why people should upgrade. As it is now, we are just playing lesser resolution, upscaled versions of games that we played on the Xbox One X. Which makes absolutely no sense considering the abysmal CPU power it had. Yet the more modern system with more power can’t do as good or better? So I don’t have high hopes for next generation unless Microsoft changes their ways. You can have the most powerful system on the market, but without the software to push it and support it… What’s the point?

    • @deepblue8143
      @deepblue8143 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well said, there are games on the One X and PS4 Pro that look better than these next gen games. I don't understand what happened. It's very odd to me.

    • @MeltWithU
      @MeltWithU 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@deepblue8143 You and I both. If they could do 4K/60 on Forza 7 and make it look as sharp as it did… Why can’t they do it for the newest? it just seems like there’s something off and I don’t think it’s the power of the systems. I think the cost of development has gotten out of hand and these companies like Microsoft refuse to lay out the money to create AAA titles.
      So they are just doing AA versions of their franchises and relying on updates over time to hopefully sort any issues out. But the games just aren’t as crisp as they were. Many of them are running at an upscaled 1440p, instead of 4K. Or at least something in between 1440p and 4K. On top of that, the resolution of textures has seemingly gone backwards or the form of AA or upscaling they are using is creating blurriness within those textures.
      My question to the Microsoft employee was, instead of spending money buying up all of these developers… Why don’t they put that money towards creating truly incredible AAA games? For which, they replied… I totally agree. It’s very obvious that games like Perfect Dark, Fable and Rare’s next game are in development hell. As we have heard little about any of them for the past five years.
      Which says to me that either the money isn’t there to create what the developers want to or they just have no direction of where they want to go and created great videos of their aspirations… With no idea how to actually get to the end goal or maybe not even know what the end goal is. just released a tech demo of milestones that they may never be able to achieve.
      Again, if they focus on at least a half dozen AAA games with the highest quality, then those games are going to sell systems. But, it seems like they are focusing on AA games and wondering why nobody’s buying systems. Totally ass backwards thinking.

    • @deepblue8143
      @deepblue8143 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @MakeLifeExtraordinary once again spot on. Forza 7 vs Forza Motorsport is a perfect example. Forza 7 is the better looking game and to me, it's not even up for debate. It is much sharper on the One X compared to the Series X.
      They had years upon years of development, it is a next gen only game yet somehow it came out looking worse. The raytracing in particular does not look good, it is too low resolution and everything ends up looking messy because of that.
      Clearly something is wrong and I'd love to know what. I'm sick of asking myself why did I purchase this console. It also seems like they should have put a faster cpu in the One X since it clearly trumps the Series S in terms of power. Where are all the games Microsoft? We're waiting..

    • @blankoutcast
      @blankoutcast 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think using ray tracing was the mistake Ray tracing is the future but the series X wasn’t really designed around it and the amd graphics doesn’t let them run it to the point where it looks great. So you sacrifice performance and visuals using the ray tracing features. So if they release a new console with better ray tracing and ai ml upscaling then they can use the tech like metro exodus with global illumination. But add ray traced reflections and RTAO. Then Forza Motorsport and other games really would look great. It’s similar to what unreal is doing but they are using software which requires even more compute. The problem is the new consoles are powerful in the way developers used to make games in the old ways and they are basically low spec in the way you make new games.

    • @MeltWithU
      @MeltWithU 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@blankoutcast awesome reply. I totally agree. I also think they need to add processors specifically for physics. As, it’s time we get physics for gameplay. Just not for show. Like, my example has always been being able to shoot the corner of the top of a building so it falls on top of an enemy and kills them. For which, the enemy can do the same to you. Which totally changes, the gameplay. allowing a different experience every time somebody plays. Not to mention, more suspense, as there is more ways than shooting you in the face that the enemy can kill you.

  • @Oryon7
    @Oryon7 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    This idea of current consoles' CPUs being underpower is really silly. People are concluding that based on some CPU limited games? Here's why I don't buy that narrative...
    The first reason being; The upgrade from last gen CPUs was absolutely gargantuan, and yet, ask yourself whether games are significantly more dynamic/simulated than we've seen in the past. The honest answer is "NO!" Heck, you can boot up decade+ old games, and conclude that much of today's games are way less dynamic, even after YEARS since stuff like Crisis. CPUs have only gotten TENS of times more powerful, so stop demanding better results right?😒
    The second reason is; most games/engines are still poorly optimized for multi-threaded workloads. Even in a hypothetical game that does a decent job keeping those cores/threads busy, the way workloads are divided up and scheduled can open up a ton of efficiency gains. The type of workloads makes a difference too. A busy CPU doesn't always mean work is progressing smoothly. Some taks can be handled in more efficient ways, further maximizing potential. Which tiew into my last point.
    Finally: There's also the fact that today's hardware(especially consoles) are SO MUCH better suited for off-loading tasks to the GPU and other hardware blocks! Whether it's file decompression, culling and draw calls, sound professing, or any number of random compute tasks... it's all stuff that these modern hardware makes quick work of with dedicated hardware or their massively parallel GPU cores. So it begs the question: How are consoles with such POWERFUL CPU's NOT doing anything that beyond what the pitiful CPUs of last gen did, even WHILE they were bogged down with other CPU-taxing tasks?
    These CPUs obviously aren't being fully exploited. Not even close. If something on the scale of GTA6 is possible(even at 30 frames!), that itself is evidence that our current crop of games aren't representative of the capability of current consoles' CPUs.

That was definitely running in real time and didn't appear to be a super limited and controlled view frustum (one of the tricks that allows cutscenes to look nicer than gameplay).
      A big part of the design philosophy of tech like nanite and Lumen is that the scaling is tied more to output resolution than what is actually happening in the game (hence "designed with upscaling in mind" titles). Putting all the movies and shows aside, there are very few more recent superhero games worth playing in my opinion.
      The Arkham Batman series, though those came out before everyone was getting tired of superheroes. Still good though.
      The first Insomniac Spiderman game. I can't really recommend the second one as I found it to feel like high quality bland slop if that makes sense. But the first one is pretty good and feels like it had some passion.
      And my personal favorite that flew under the radar, Guardians of the Galaxy. It's so freaking good and didn't pick up much traction.
      I don't even really classify Guardians as "superhero" crap. It's a marvel property but it's a fun character driven Sci-Fi adventure with no "super heroes" to be seen.
      It's so good. Genuinely great characters and writing, and thankfully in its own separate Canon not connected to any other media.

    I honestly think the Marvel 1943 trailer doesn't look good, some weird animations (when Black Panther is kicking the soldier it's just Panther's foot extending, touching the other character which then flys away after a big delay, no actual force in the kick, no real impact), Cap's eyes look dead, it all looks high res, but not believable. For cinematics they would have to be flawless.
    But gameplay is obviously most important for a game at the end.

    At the risk of being too dismissive, AI generated NPCs/content in games sounds like absolute garbage. AI upscaling is one thing, but the entire point of media has always been to engage with something that other human beings made. This is just insidious.

    • @Wobbothe3rd
      @Wobbothe3rd 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      You are indeed being too dismissive, just as Alex was on the last DF Direct when he said he wasn't sold on 'NPCs telling you their life story'. The point of that demo wasn't what the Ramen shop owner actually said, it was that designers could inject their own ideas, personality, and story into a live conversation! The content of the NPCs is still being created by humans, the twist is that content is no longer linearly scripted, repeating the exact same way, and limited by how many permutations the designers can afford to script and purchase voice acting for! Think of a game like Starfield, where the player freedom allows for things the writers didn't. Think of how extremely fun and intuitive actually talking to characters would be. This is a perfect example of that "Nvidia blasé" where something very obviously revolutionary and potentially powerful is dismissed by people because they aren't thinking big enough and because it disrupts current paradigms we're used to. AI is a tool in the hands of humans, these demos show off the capability and technical possibilities. People rushing to judgememt now is like judging the potential of a new graphics tech based on programmer art, before actual artists have had a chance to actually put it to proper use.

    • @HEADSHOTPROLOL
      @HEADSHOTPROLOL 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      100% this. Art and storytelling has existed since we were cavemen, and it's purpose has been to be a medium for people to communicate and connect with one another in a way that language never could. I really believe it's an essential part of us as people, and AI is the absolute antithesis to this. Take music for example, the beauty in it resides in that every timbre, stroke and feeling of each and every note comes directly from another human who's expressing themselves through it straight to you. That's what makes it real and touching. The same notion applies through any creative medium and craft, to films, painting, games, novels, anything. It genuinely is depressing to imagine a future where that core attribute of crafting something with your own touch, the thing that makes all these art forms we love worth anything in the first place, be sacrificed to a program comprised of stolen data.
      And for anyone who thinks the opposite, that's fine. I hear from supporters of AI within creative mediums that it will lead to so many incredible innovations and new ideas. I can try and set aside my core beliefs for a second and imagine this and sure, that sounds nice and ideal in theory. But you may have too high hopes and expectations of an industry entirely fueled by capitalistic ventures and investors. It will almost exclusively be used to cut corners and replace people, not fuel creativity.

Just because you're not using the headset because you're not hearing about huge AAA titles releasing doesn't mean support is drying up. As for 1st party, everyone is waiting for Sony to talk about their flat game plans just like people are waiting for them to talk about their VR game plans. Say what you want about the hardware, that's an opinion. But realize you can't hold the games argument against Sony when VR in general is barely supported.

      On the note of dualsense - only some games do, which is exactly what Alex noted. It was a notable exception that spiderman on PC got limited wireless support for some features (and only via Steam Input), but even then, not all of it (you still need to use a wire to get everything).
      Edit: it's also worth noting that basic haptics isn't really the full dualsense setup, since you get that on any reasonable controller from the past 15 years anyhoo. It's all the other gubbins like adaptive triggers and, whilst I mostly mute it, the speaker.

    There was this discussion about consoles having finite resources. And from Frame Rate, Quality and Resolution, something has to give. Problem is that with certain games all of them are compromised. Developers often simply do not respect the console and want more out of it than possible. And that is not a hardware issue, or the console lacking what it takes. And pretty often the games that are suffering on consoles are also suffering on PCs with 2x or more processing power.
