Leave a comment below with your thoughts on the new CXS 12 and what you think I should do. One correction to note (for the 10:00 mark) is that the Bosch rotatable attachments CAN indeed be rotated without removing from the tool - simple pull it outwards and move to the desired position. It's wild I didn't notice this after hundreds of hours of use - big thanks to @reeced1 for noting!!!

Thanks for the overview. I was very intrigued by this but I have the dewalt variant of the multi head driver and like it a lot. I previously had the milwaukee, but sold it because there's a portion right above the trigger that can pinch your finger when releasing the trigger. That got old pretty quick. The dewalt is $179usd but only comes with a single battery. That's fine for me though, I grabbed a pair of 5.0 for $89 and those bump up the power a bit more in addition to the extended runtime. Great little driver.
Personally, I do think the noise issue is a bit overblown. I've had louder drills and quieter ones. It generally doesn't bother me. Just something to get used to I imagine. I'd try using it for a week or so to see if your ears adapt to it. Looking forward to seeing what you ultimately decide.

I have waited for well over a DECADE for this one. Had a talk some years ago with Frank J at Festool and at the time they said they could not make a brushless version of the CXS. Which I thought was baloney as Bosch already had their small brushless 10.8/12V out. Anyway I thought I would never see the day. Now that it is here I am part excited and part underwhelmed. Part unerwhelmed because there is not much incentive in choosing it over the CXS18 which is small-ish and has a better grip for me. Also, Metabo/Mafell and Hikoki all have a version out which in are 12V (Mafell/Metabo) and 18V (Hikoki MetaboHPT) and to be frank, I found the Hikoki 18V the best of the lot. Will keep the CXS12 for the time being but I am no stranger to the idea of selling it if it does not impress me over time. The old CXS? Well, it is a keeper, for more than one reason.

Just bought one, despite being wary after watching this video. It doesn’t sound half as bad in real life as on this video through my phone speakers. And under actual load/use it sounds better still. Yes it’s quite loud, but the extra power and battery compatibility with the rest of the festool chargers were what i had been hoping for from a CXS update for years. Ultimately im very happy with it.

I just picked up the CSX12 set yesterday and I also have the same Bosch set you have. I also have an old CDD12 which I loved with the NiCad battery system that is now functionally defunct. I had the batteries rebuilt once but they just don't last long and the company I used is no longer in business. I like the Bosch system but my gripes with it are 1) it doesn't stand up on its own with any attachments and 2) the drill chuck is always coming unlocked when I un-chuck a bit. The beauty of the CSX12 is that all my accessories (including the eccentric chuck) will work with the CSX12. It is ashamed my dealer only had the set because I could have saved $50 since I already had the right angle chuck. The sound is not a deal killer for me and after about 7 years with the Bosch and 16 years with the Festool, I have to give the edge to Festool on ergonomics and accessories. I will say that the Bosch is more compact if you take it to the jobsite. Steve

I have the older CXS 10.8v, and, in the real life, it usually almost never happens that i am in speed 2 AND full throttle, i would say 90% of the time i'm in speed 1, and not full throttle, and the trigger is pretty precise, that's what i like the most about theses. I tend to grab myself a larger drill if needed, but for me, it's basically a very precise electronic screwdriver on steroids, nothing else.

@@MasonWoodshop Thanks for the reply! To give you some context, I actually do own a CXS 18v. This thing screams as well in drill mode and 8+ drive settings. It even makes weird inconsistent whistle noises at higher rpm’s. Check this video out:
      th-cam.com/users/shortsE3c-_sJMu-g
This fellow TH-camr sent his CXS18 back and got a call from Festool with the fallowing explanation for the high pitched whistling sounds:
What I understood is, that it is due to the new powerful compact engine that is capable of higher speeds. They mentioned, also the competition using the same technology facing same issue. They have been thinking about excluding this frequency levels, but that would result in the machine to suddenly jump from one speed to much higher level.
Im keeping my CXS18v nonetheless, to me there is no better 18v drill from festool, and I’ve invested quite a bit into their 18v lineup too. Im using mine at lower rpms, and when I use drill mode I use hearing protection.
In your situation I would return the festool for use, and stick to the Bosch 12v if you need the offset chuck, or switch to the old cxs if not in need of the offset chuck. The Milwaukee is just plain odd.
Kinda bummed, the cxs12 and cxs18 could have been perfect, the form factor and features are amazing. The noise is just too big of a trade off for most people, especially if you have to do hours of cabinet work a day.

I’m not the only one who thinks the new CXS 12 requires serious hearing protection in typical use. I hear better than many people my age because I guard it carefully. That doesn’t mean I like 32db foam ear plugs any better than anyone else. Spending more time plugged up than necessary doesn’t appeal to me. I am accustomed to using my Festool CXS for light assembly without hearing protection. I will continue to do so. I will buy a CXS 12 when Festool does something about the sound level. What I will do immediately is to buy the competitive Bosch product for $129 and design my own Systainer configuration to house it. This will provide a solution when I need the specialty chuck functions in a small format drill. For the bulk of my light assembly, I will continue to use my trusted Festool CXS.

If I am not mistaken on the Bosch right angle and eccentric chucks you can rotate them while locked. If they are locked into place, you can pull them away from the drill and rotate without having to unlock the locking collar. In regards to the sound I think the brushless tools tend to be higher pitch. Brush and Brushless are not an apple to apples comparison in regards to noise. Is the Festool higher pitch than the average brushless tool? That is something I don't know. I have never used the new CXS 12. If someone had the C18 and CSX 18 you could compare the noise.

I have the 10.8 Festoool installer drill and I love it. Overall, it is my most used drill. Seems some times people have the wrong expectations. They sell it as a n installer drill and for that it is perfect. It has done everything I've needed. I have bigger drills if I need more power. Also the ergonomics of the 10.8 is SO nice, feels so good in the hand. More importantly, the ergonomics of the 10.8 is how you can push the drill at the right point, in line with the chuck. My Makita's all have the vents on the back, so you don't have the inline push because you cover the vents and possibly heat it up more. I have never used the Bosch, but it looks just like the M12 impact I have, it's just awkward to use, the shape does not feel right. Might just be me. I also use to have the Milwaukee M12 installer drill and did not like it, ended up selling it. It stinks because the forward/reverse is not by the trigger, it is on the top, such a poor design. You have the drill in one hand, you are holding something else in place with your other hand, and what if you need to change direction? PIA. I don't plan on getting the 12 volt CXS because I do not need another battery platform, have to many as it is. And thank you for showing the noise, that is odd for Festool, but another reason not to get it.

FWIW, the old CXS tops about 75dB (rough similar positioning) and there's just a slightest tinge of that same high pitch frequency at full throttle. It's overwhelmed by a much lower base freq that's even lower than your Bosch, so most of the energy is going there instead of the high freq. The batteries aren't an issue since they last so long and the spare takes up little room in the box.

Hey, did you return it? I have just received my CXS 12 and I did quick comparison with my Bosch GSR 12V-15 FC (brushed motor) and GSR 12V-35 FC (brushless motor). I measured sound/noise level with a phone app and CXS 12 and GSR 12V-15 FC are both at the same level. Bosch GSR 12V-35 FC is the loudest one, which is no surprise for me. My subjective impression is that CXS 12 is the quietest and sounds the best (whatever it means). No. 2 on the list is the GSR 12V-15 FC which for me - subjectively - is louder than CXS 12, even if the phone app shows the same level. I'm pretty sure that the sound itself is some kind of a factor here. GSR 12V-15 FC simply sounds totally different and my ears are picking it up as louder than CXS 12. The last one is the GSR 12V-35 FC which is the loudest one - no doubts - subjectively and according to the phone app. GSR 12V-35 FC has also the most annoying sound (again, whatever it means). This is what hit my ears immediately after I bought it a while ago and started using it next to GSR 12V-15 FC. I really like my Bosch GSR 12V drills (I've got 2 pcs of GSR 12V-15 FC and one GSR 12V-15 FC, which already tells a lot what do I think about these tools), but in tool sound competition my conclusions are opposite to yours - CXS 12 wins for me (subjectively, of course).

Festool drills are the best drills I’ve ever used. if you’re going to buy a drill get a Festool. The control and precision is more important than power or speed for more light to medium use tools. The case to holds multiple bits batteries and accessories that you’re not digging for which makes everything easier. I own Milwaukee, Dewalt, Makita and the small Bosch and would trade them all for either the C18 and the PDC or the CXS 18 and a PDC. The CXS 12 is excellent for really light duty but is worth it for the multiple tasks it can perform for cabinet work or just putting up blinds. The size and weight are the a no brainer when in a cabinet or on a latter or working above your head. The old cxs was a one trick pony but the newer one is more versatile. The other brands are getting just as expensive with far less features. Check out the prices of their batteries, and the 12v batteries on the Bosch burn out pretty quickly. Buy the Festool you won’t regret it.

I had the original CXS 10.8V since its inception. Still like it, always wanted a little more power and higher RPM for drilling applications. C12/C18/T18 and CXS/TXS18 have all been in the stable. The latter two are really nice - though I am not sure I would have gotten them if I knew the new CXS12 would come out so soon after. On top of that Hikoki released a very nice quick change drill just the other month and it is a real pleasure to use - and it accepts the Centrotec drill cnd bit chuck and Centrotec drills with no issues. So, I sold the TXS/CXS/18 virtually unused and went Hikoki with no regrets. The old CXS is still in service around the house and the new CXS 12 is at the workshop.
First impressions are good. But honestly, it is nearly there, but not quite. The grip is somewhat shorter so I think the older CXS is more comfortable to hold. And I have small hands. Yeah, yeah, I know how Festool wants me to hold the drill with the index finger along the axis but with the old CXS I can hold it and solve awkward mounting angles. The new one, not as comfortable in that regard.
On the plus side: I like that it takes the larger chucks. I run it (and the Hikoki) with the larger metal Festool drill chuck. The Hikoki drill is however both stronger and has a more comfortable grip. They complement each other just as well as the CXS/TXS18 does.
Another nitpick would be that the charger is way too large for what it needs to be. It is the standard and well proven TCL6 but they could do with a way smaller charger and let you have room for other stuff in the Systainer. But, I realize that the compatibility is key so ONE charger for both 12/18V.
Good on you Festool, pity for me I dumped all my Festool 18V recently. Might relegate the new CXS 12 to shop work only, will see after the next on site job if I really like it or not.

The sound is not so great compared with the previous PDC, 4 gears, that has a more comfortable, humming sound if you will. The motor they put in all the new version is too noisy after my opinion. So, I totally agree with you. But anyway, the build quality, the grip, the comfort holding the CXS in the hand is very great!!

I have the similar shaped M12 and this new CXS. The new CXS sounds Shriller than the M12. It is noticeable. I posted about it in the North America Festool group and someone, who has the older, brushed CXS model, commented that his CXS is quieter than the M12. This is clearly not the case with the new brushless CXS. I have the Bosch 12v in my city apartment so I can't compare it to the CXS but here in my house, I have the old Bosch 10.8v (brushed) and it is much quieter - which might explain why the older 10.8v brushed CXS has quieter sound.

100db basically means you need earpros. Festool just released earbuds. Hm.
I take noise very seriously, and I think based on this video the chances I'll get the new cxs is pretty low. I replaced all my high power impacts with a m12 hydraulic, because when you gotta work in a Furnished and occupied office, you don't want that noise for the customer's sake. And I'm not there to destroy stuff so 18v and other high power impacts aren't really necessary.
I kinda like the centrotec system, and fest tool ergonomics, but there is no way I'm running a 100db drill if I'm not hammer drilling. Can you do a noise test on speed 1, and is this trigger as smooth as the original? I know a lot of triggers now, even the higher end tools have steps, meaning a minimum rpm, then a step faster, etc until full speed, while some of the older tools has a true potentiometer style trigger where you can get the drill to creep. I know this doesn't bother everyone but it makes a difference for me when trying to start a screw in a very tight place.

I tested the new CXS 12 and compared it with the M12 installation driver. I used to have the older CXS and sold it in anticipation of the new one. I might make a video, but here are my conclusions: 1. Ergonomics: The new CXS is quite comparable in weight and ergonomics, and it feels great in the hand. The M12 on the other hand, feels less balanced and absolutely front-heavy with the Jacob's chuck. It feels more like a proper drill rather than the compact tool the CXS is. The M12's direction control is simply unacceptable. 2. Precision: The centrotec bits lead to less slop in both the Festool CXS's. The older CXS had no runout I could detect. However, this new one has an unusually large amount of runout - my guess is that my piece is defective. I wouldn't expect Festool drills or any drill) to have such pronounced runout. The M12 has a slight runout that you can tell when you use the right-angle chuck because it accentuates the off-axis movement. However, that is minimal compared to my M18 impact driver, which is really bad (and from online reviews, seem to be common for the M18 impact driver). The M12 is also better than my (clearly defective) new CXS but worse than my old CXS. Now, I am going to return the CXS not only because it is defective, but I realized I really need the offset/eccentric chuck - and don't want to pay another $140. It comes standard with the $130 (everything included, even battery and charger) M12. Compare that to the $350 + 130 + centrotec bits Festool! However, I recommend you keep the CXS because: you will get used to the sound; it is far more ergonomic than the M12 and doesn't have the worst direction control like the M12; you can probably afford the higher cost and justify it in your builds and videos; and you have the battery system. Hope this helps.

I own a few of the Bosch 12V 35Nm 12V drills, as well as the former brushless 20Nm version; I find the 20Nm better controllable in lower RPM making them more ideal for smaller screws (like 3x25 ) where the newer 35Nm brushless version tends to be a bit rough in lower RPM's. It takes some time to get used to. I don't like either of the 12V versions for their chuck; it simply doesn't grip hard enough on drills etc. You always have slip when you don't want it.. and you'll find yourself re-tightening them every single time. In my opinion it's a lack in design. But overall i'm pleased with the 12v35 series, they put out serious power. The Milwaukee is more like the Festool… the Festool is not more like the Milwaukee. Don’t get it twisted haha

Why do so many TH-camrs call it the CSX when talking about it but write CXS in their titles?? Is it a Freudian thing maybe... see-ess-sex

You can’t really complain about pricing/value. Every Festool item will always have a much higher price compared to other tool brands. That comes with the brand. It’s up to the individual if they think the price is justified or not.

Agreed. I posted in the comments that you can indeed just pull it out to adjust it. Life changing after using it incorrectly for so long!

Comparison of price is a non-starter. Everyone knows the Festool will cost more. Brush vs brushless. Didn’t mention the Festool 3-year warranty on everything including wear-and-tear items. You gave the advantage to Festool on every feature but made your decision on “sound”??? “Don’t even want others around you to hear it”….that’s a real head scratcher. Yet the feel of the Festool while your drilling those 60 holes in an hour is much better. Sorry, don’t understand the logic behind your decision.

This wasn’t a formal review and as meant to share my thoughts on it. While I did return it, I ended up rebuying a few months later.
You’re right that the feel is just so much better, as is the Centrotec system (main reason I went back).
I’m planning on posting a new video in the near future outlining these advantages more.

Ну вы сравнили, понос от боша с вечно заедающим переключателем скоростей и неэргономичной ручкой. И богоподобный эргономичный CXS

Oh boy. Look, I’ve been in the industry for almost 30 years and if someone complains about the sound of a drill maybe they should find another vocation or hobby. Let’s grow up and be men. I own the CXS18 and love it. I’m a man and men deal with it. It’s German quality. After owning the Milwaukee version I’m happier with the Festool. Yes, Milwaukee does have good tools but over the years I’ve noticed that quality control is way down.

It is just a shame that you don't want to pay for that extra part that you are "just a shaming Festool" for. Beggars can be choosy.
