My biggest mistake was on my first afghan. It was beautiful! 14 colors one row of each in a pretty ROYGBIV pattern. Then I tied off each color on both sides with about 4 knots , cut off the excess yarn and then just to be safe, I put a drop of crazy glue on each knot! 😅 Hundreds of scratchy nubs but it lasted for 35 years and the yarn in the center gave out long before the knots did! 😊I’ve since learned to weave in the ends !
Thank you so much for sharing!! Sounds like it was a gorgeous afghan! 🧶🧶🧶
Rougbiv???
😂😂😂
@@KimMesser514red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. Roy G Biv is the mnemonic taught in school to remember the colors of the light spectrum.
@Larisa Thomas can tell old. I never learned that in school. 😁❤️
That little alien bear deserves arms, Elise! ☹️
Haha! There have been several others who have said the same thing!! 👽🧸😂
I made my first temperature afghan this year using a well thought-out color/ temperature key. However, I didn’t plan my size or measurements, just grabbing acrylic yarn from my stash. As the year went on I realized it was going to be a large and extremely heavy blanket. Now in December I’m sure it could cover the entire state of Rhode Island😂
Lol!!! Thank you for sharing your crochet mistake!! 🧶🧶🧶
My first blanket is made out of a chenille type yarn. The yarn was great to use but I didn't take into mine the dimensions and it ended up to be long and skinny. After buying more skeins I finally gave up and called it good. It is so heavy! I used the thicket stitch but at least my friend that I made it for will be very warm! 😂
the rhode island part 😭😭
oh god, i’m afraid mine will be like that too and it’s only february!! lol
Yes...i did ghat too
My BIGGEST fail was a huge shawl I made with VERY expensive yarn. I was about a month into getting back into crochet after a three decade hiatus and thought I was ready to jump in. I scrounged up money for the yarn for a few weeks and then got to work. I finished in record time and it was gorgeous not a missed stitch and my color pooling was chefs kiss. And then I washed it 😑
😢 and when I opened the washer my whole soul left my body. It was a jumble of yarn and some had felted 😢 I did not weave my ends , for some reason I had a brain drain and freaking tied them 😭 😭 😭
😢 it was soul crushing.
Oh no!!!!!!!! My heart hurts for you!!!!! 🧶🧶🧶
😮😮😮
Oh no. I would have cried for days…or weeks. I’m so sorry for your experience.
It seems like the more expensive the yarn, the worse the mistake! My condolences for your loss. 🫣
@@montanalilac omg for real! I have a million red heart projects that have the ends triple woven but I get a lil merino super wash and bam 💥 I’m tying ends 🤦🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️ 😫😭
You bunny ear headband was amazing! I can't believe you counted that as a fail. To me it was sooo much cuter than the original pattern. New to crocheting so everything pretty much fails into the fail category, but I am enjoying the process and learning little by little. So glad I found you! Thank you for all of your videos!!
Elise, your bride and groom are meant to not be easily replicated because of the intention that they are made just for your daughter and son-in-law with lots of love.
Thank you!! 👰🏼♀️🤵🏻♂️
The alien bear is actually so cute I wanna make one of my own just like him! Weird quirks and all
Awww! Thank you! 👽🧸
Maybe I’m just assigning too much weight to it, but I actually think it’s kind of lovely that you’re having a hard time figuring out what you did with reproducing your daughter and son in law’s characters. It means that they’re totally unique and there’s only two like them in the whole world.
Thanks for the video!
Awww, that's a lovely way to look at it! ❤️❤️
I love that weird little fox!! I do that with eyes intentionally lol.
Haha!! Thank you! 🦊🦊🦊
Im a beginner crocheter. Less than half a year in. And im in the phase now of just completing projects and accepting the mistakes and learning from them for the next project. And ever since i started embracing the mistakes, i have learned so much. Im so proud of the projects i have finished, but i know a few years from now im gonna look back and think these were the worst projects ive ever made. But i still love them. My biggest lesson recently was while making the knotted lovey. I made the whole panda inside out and i made the head too big. My current lovey is going way smoother and its actually the right side out. 🎉
Yes!! You're in such a great season of your crochet journey! I am also so proud of the projects I made in the beginning! It reminds me that I was learning how to embrace my mistakes and that I didn't give up when it got hard! 🧶🧶🧶
I honestly love the large head on the bear!
Thank you! 👽🧸
So I've had a couple. First, I made afghans for all of my kids while teaching myself to crochet. I now know that I essentialy did 4 blankets in back loops only. I had no idea what a stitch was and the book I was using didn't really explain it in a way I understood. 15sec on TH-cam and I learned what made a stitch. Then my first Amigurumi.... the gauge/tension the, holes, the stuffing, the akward decreases and increases. Yeah it was bad. My children have a collection of "Mommy Prototypes" that they love and adore in all of their akward, mishappen glory. And I learned a lot, too!
Awww! That's so sweet that your kids loved the prototypes!! Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
MY biggest mistake was when I was making a Dishcloth. I added stitches and deleted stitches and my edges were ALL OVER the place. I still have it and I laugh everything I pick it up.
Haha!! Those are great lessons!! 🧶🧶🧶
Every sweater I ever tried to knit or crochet. Worst projects ever. Lesson learned? I'm not a sweater maker, lol.
I feel your pain!!!! 😩
Aww poor Bear, please give the Bear arms, I think all of your 'failures' are beautiful, I don't think any of them are failures
He definitely needs arms! 👽🧸
Watching Elise’s videos while crocheting is such a vibe❤
Awww! Thank you! 🧶🧶🧶
While the first blanket I ever made was very pretty, it had a big mistake. I used 3 colours, in the Catherine’s Wheel stitch. Each row rotated through the colours. However, in the middle or a bit more, I repeated a colour, and did not see the error until near the end of the blanket. I could of frogged the blanket, but I was so proud of what I had accomplished so far, that I pretended this was a purposeful plan. The blanket was so lovely, and for a granddaughter, whom loved it. I am planning another blanket for her, as I have come a long way, several blankets later! 😅 PS The bunny headband is super cute, too floppy or not.
Sounds like the project turned out beautiful even with the mistake!! 🧶🧶🧶
I made a dress for my kid. I didn't think about the yarn. It was cotton and made the dress more like an armour. 😂 It also came out just barely big enough since I didn't think about adding some room.
Thank you sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
I'm with you on the importance of writing good notes on my projects! I can't tell you how many times I forgot what hook I used, or where I left off on a project. Then you waste so much time trying to figure it out when you could've just done it right the first time! Definitely mistakes I've learned from! Thanks for your great video Elise! ❤
Yes!!!! It's the hardest mistake I've had to learn!! 🧶🧶🧶
Yep, me too! I'm a beginner and started so many projects at the same time that I really confused myself. I bought a crochet journal in the hopes that it would help but I still keep starting new projects and failing to write down what I have done. Just too caught up in the excitement of learning a new art form!
@colson8327 I know! I have tried to keep a designated notebook and I'm always misplacing that! I just need to work on my organizing skills! I have so many works in progress and that adds to the confusion!
I take a piece of yarn and make knots and loops in it to emulate the hook size. For example a size six has six knots a size 6.5 has 6 knots and a loop. I tie it to the project in the first couple rows and snip it off when finished.
I just started crocheting a little over a year ago so pretty much everything I make is a hot mess...although my blankets are a lot less trapezoidal than in the beginning 😁. I actually have gifted a few baby blankets, and the recipients loved them. Practice practice practice! I can't wait to be good enough to try amigurumi....your work is beautiful Elise!
That's wonderful!! Sounds like you've already made a lot of progress!!! 🧶🧶🧶
Thanks for sharing your worst projects with us! We learn so much by our mistakes. I was pretty new at crochet (mostly self-taught) and my worst mistake was thinking that just by following directions in a magazine my granny square sweater would look just like the one on the cover. I didn’t know anything about tension or yarn choice. Once I began sewing ALL the completed granny squares together I realized that my sweater was stiff as a board and I could hardly get it on. I was so disappointed. 40 years later it’s probably still in a box in my basement because I didn’t have the heart to get rid of it.
I totally understand not wanting to get rid of it! Thanks for sharing! ❤
I have given up on all my projects because I thought they were ugly, this in turn caused me to lose interest in crotchet for a while, I just recently got back into it and I'm trying to learn to finish my project no matter what it looks like because it helps me grow as a crotcheter, Thank you Elise for this video,
Yes! Be very strategic about the projects you start and finish most of them! Great new strategy!! 🧶🧶🧶
@EliseRoseCrochet Thank you sweetie! I appreciate the info. I'm definitely going to be more strategic about my projects from here on out.
hi elise I ve been watching you for some time and here is my worst project ever . I learned to crochet at the age of seven or eight and I knew only chains and when I returned to crochet I saw a baby jellyfish that i thought was amazing at that time I then tried to crochet it chaining madly and sewing with thread the chains later I improved and learned how to do the magic ring and double crochets and trebles and puff stiches and I am now crocheting amazing toys and this is the first time I am crocheting a sweater.(I am nine years old and I am from Romania). Thanks elise for your advice and for petunia pettalmouse (I renamed him stuart little.
Wow!! That is amazing!! What an amazing crocheter you will be when you're my age!! 👏👏👏
Almost same, but I learned to crochet at 9 it think and am a bit older than you at the moment!
But I love alien bear! I just love big heads though😂 The wedding dolls are the sweetest. I've also done confusing notes and kicked myself later! You got this🙌🏻
I love Alien Bear, too! He looks upset about not having arms. 😆
@@wil554 haha, oh yay! Isn't he the cutest!! He may be a tad upset about his arms. 😂😂
Thank you, Katie! Your designs are the cutest!!! 🐻🐻🐻
As someone who had been away from crocheting for many years, essentially a beginner, I crocheted a rectangular shawl for my sister out of variegated 18:17 18:17 velour yarn. What a nightmare!!! The yarn was so soft and slippery that I could hardly work with it. I finished it after frogging many rows over and over again. It has lots of uneven rows but my sister likes it. I learned quite a bit. 😊
Those are such great lessons! And it's wonderful that your sister liked it! 🧶🧶🧶
I have avoided that yarn because I was suspicious about how hard it would be to work with. Thanks for confirming!
She likes it because someone took the time to do something personally for her. The beauty of crochet made with love v a quickly purchased item produced thousands of times.
Recently a friend asked me to make a red panda from a pattern I hadn't used before so I decided to do a trial run and I'm so glad I did! The first one was lumpy and you could see the stuffing, the face was all wrong and the embroidered features were shocking. I was tempted to tell her I couldn't do it but preserved, made a lost of everything I wanted to change and how to thought to change it and I was so shock at how different the second one came out. Just learning from a single project the quality of my work advanced lightyears!
That's amazing!!! I love how you didn't let your first attempt stop you! You let it be the guide for what to do different the next time!! 👏👏👏
My bigger mistake was trying to make matching slippers. One will fit Godzilla and the other tinker bell. Well now I crochet them at the same time , toes then body then heel etc. works for me! Loved the video. I’ve made all your mistakes the slippers were the easiest to explain. Still at it however and now I know when to stop and start over. Don’t crochet on and on when it’s wrong. Lots of ❤️
Thanks for sharing! That happened to me when knitting a pair of socks! 🧦🧦🧦
@@EliseRoseCrochet oh Elise the comments are hilarious!!! Such fun and I’ve done them all💖
Ooohh you could put the bunny ears and flowers on a very steam punk vibe hat and be the dopest for Easter 🐣
Oh that sounds amazing!! 🐰🐰🐰
I tried to make my first wearable - a basic sleeveless shirt with just a little bit of shaping. It took me three tries to come anywhere close to gauge and when I got pretty close I figured that was good enough for a shirt that was supposed to be pretty loose anyway. HAH. Turns out pretty close becomes tent like once you have made the entire project sigh
That was a hard lesson to learn I'm sure! Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
Thank you so much Elise for being so open about your mistakes. And even more so about keeping the finished items. Every project of mine has had mistakes. Some I can live with, some not. But you are so right. It is always an opportunity for learning. Your mistakes provide a learning opportunity for me too. Thank you! And, I am glad you are so proud of these “mistakes”. They are still adorable.
Thank you!! Without the mistakes I would never be the crocheter I am today! In several years I will look back on the work I'm doing now and see all the mistakes! 🧶🧶
I started amigurumi when my grandson asked me to make a kit of Peanuts characters that he found at the book store. I made Charlie Brown first and I mistakenly crocheted the leg openings closed as I made the legs. After a couple more characters I realized what I did wrong, so I asked my grandson for Charlie Brown back so I could “fix his legs.” I didn’t realize how much fun amigurumi was until that kit! Thank you for your videos, Elise. You are a wonderful crochet friend! 💞
Haha!! Those mistakes really are the best teachers!! ❤️
I would love a Peanuts gang in amigurumi! May I ask where you got it?
@@kathy9947 I'm not sure my response gets posted because every time I check it's not here. :/ The kit was purchased at B a r n e s & N o b l e and if no longer there, I saw some on e b a y. :)
My first afghan I made I did not pay attention to the dye lots and the cream I chose had different shades throughout.
Oh I've done that one too!! Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I'm making an amigurumi nativity set and for some reason my counts never come out the same as the pattern. All my people are different shapes and sizes. But that's okay...I decided I can live with it. If I demanded perfection I wouldn't crochet at all.
That's a great attitude to have!! 👏👏👏
Love "fails". They're actually a fantastic learning experience, along with a visual reference = not really a fail afterall.
They are excellent teachers! ❤
Great information 👍🏽 I can relate to the bride and groom situation bc I made a pink stuffy flower, posted on fb and peeps requested pattern and I cannot recall (remember is not a word for this old lady, RECALL 😂) how I made it and I have since sold it as well 🤦🏽♀️😳🤦🏽♀️
What’s a crocheted to do🤷🏽♀️
So yes, definitely take notes!
Leticia
Oh what a cute project! I can see it in my mind!! 🌸 I feel your pain!!! 🧶🧶🧶
I was making a hat and just followed the instructions without really thinking about it, but then it ended up being child size because I crochet tighter than average. I used scarfie lite yarn which is very textured and wouldn't frog at all so I had to pitch it and start over. Now I'm trying it on a I go so I know it will fit. Lesson learned.
Good lesson to learn! Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I started my crochet journey making amigurumi toys for my grandson who was an infant at the time. Luckily he did not care how wonkie they looked and still plays with them today at Age 3. He liked to bite off the safety eyes so all of the toys I make him have homemade crochet eyes that are kids safe. My skills have improved and I pick up a hook daily as crocheting with my two cats in my lap is my happy place
Awww! So sweet! 🧶🧶🧶
With that bear, if you added arms and turtleneck sweater, he'd be cute. I find quite a few amis look odd until you add the arms (or other parts).
Your tips on the eye placement are great. I usually draw an imaginary horizontal line half way down the head to determine the height to place the eyes and then two vertical lines to divide the head into thirds to determine how far apart to place the eyes.
You're probably right! Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I had a project I did when I very first started amigurumi. He's affectionately named ugly cat. I chose a black and white yarn thinking it would pool... it didn't. There wasn't enough length between color changes and he turned out part stripen (not in a good way) part speckled (also not in a good way). To make matters worse, I lost one of his ears. So he ended up being a very derpy looking 1 eared ugly can. My daughter loved him and told me she was claiming him as her own. Ugly cat is no more though. He's been lost over the years. I learned that pooling doesn't just magically happen and isn't possible with all color changing yarn.
Awwww! Ugly cat sounds adorable!!!! 🐱🐱🐱
I love the alien bear he's so cute and unique!
Thank you!! 👽🧸
Did you upload this video just for me? lol I just made the ugliest panda ever and it's a gift. I started knitting last year and while my tension was good for keeping the stuffing hidden, it was a nightmare to seam. I did that poorly. The dress was so cute but it was so oversized...I was feeling so defeated. Thankfully I have knit so much since starting that panda and I can modify patterns so that there is much less seaming.
Your story reminds me that I forgot about a panda I crocheted! It was a gift too and it looked more like a black and white potato! 😂😂😂
Loved this video! It feels so comforting to know I am not alone in the struggles of learning. Also reminded me of a show of nailed it! 😝 I gasped when you mentioned you can’t just throw that blanket in the wash! Oh yeaaaahhhhh. I wouldn’t have thought of that either!!! 😬
Yes!! I didn't think of that either when I made it! 🧺
My worst project was a hippo head pillow/plushie for my son. It came out looking like a moose without antlers. 😂😂😂🤦♀️ Alien bear needs arms! He is too cute.
Haha!!! Thank you for the visual on the hippo! And Alien Bear now has many people rooting for him to get arms! 😂😂😂
Awww, the little Alien Bear is SO CUTE! Idk what it is about him, but he's adorable!! I love his giant head. I would love to screw up a pattern that somehow made him, I'm in love!!! ❤❤❤😮
Awww! Thank you!! 👽🐻
I'm in love with the bunny 🐇😻
Awww! Thank you! 🐰
My worst project is my first, personal queen-sized blanket. I was a complete beginner, and only used single crochet the entire time, but I used hooks that were completely different gauges (ranging from 6 to 10), different tensions, and I even used a mechanical pencil at one point when I couldn't find my hooks! I have no clue what gauge that could've been, so it's all types of warped, but I still love it!
Wow!!! A queen sized single crochet blanket!! That was a lot of work! 🧶🧶🧶
The first item I crocheted didn't realize the importance of the right hook measure and I use a very small hook with quite thick wool 😂 the kurti took me a lot of time ,came out beautiful but extremely heavy ,like a middle age armour 😂still I am waiting for a very cold winter 😅love your video 👍
Haha! Thank you for sharing! 😂
My biggest crochet mistake was many years ago. I made a dolman sleeved sweater with wide sleeves out of wool yarn. It was so heavy and bulky I felt like I was suffocating in it. Now I'm much more careful about yarn content and pattern style with everything I crochet.
That's a really good lesson to learn! 🐑🐑🐑
When I was about 14 years old, I had to knit socks at school.
I knitted so thight that I was left with socks in doll size that stayed upright. 🤦🤯
Fortunately, that has improved a lot, even for a shop knit.
Crochet works also work well, such as blankets for charity.
Haha! Tiny little doll socks! 🧦

Love the alien bear 🥰 Reminds me of a blast from the past, the pen from Picture Pages!
Awww! Now that just brought back the song from Picture Pages!! 🎶
When I was about 13, I decided to knit a sweater for my aunt. My mom bought me the beautiful emerald green yarn i had chosen. At the end the sweater had unven sleeves one shorter than the other and some extra holes where i had dropped stitches. Even though the sweater turned out hideous, my aunt wore that sweater around the house for years.
Awwww! That's so sweet! ❤️
I'm just an amateur, so I haven't racked up a lot of projects with a lot of mistakes-give me time :) I liked how, with the exception of the armless alien, that you finished your projects-mistakes included. You gave some good tips to us beginners. Thank you Elise Rose!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video!! And mistakes are the BEST teachers!! 🧶🧶🧶

I made an afghan throw for my daughter. I began to notice that the rows were getting longer and longer. The sides were growing outwards. My mistake? Not counting my stitches every few rows. I realised what I had done to gain the extra stitches and ended up frogging it and starting again. My daughter got her throw and I learned a valuable, even though a time-consuming, lesson.😏
Oh I love the alien bear so much, he's so precious and skrunkly
Aww! I appreciate this video more than you think, most youtubers never share their fails, only their best projects. It can make people like me feel as if they are the only ones who make mistakes, but as you know, that's never the case! Mistakes help us grow, I love all of my projects but not just the perfect ones. Sometimes my weirdest looking amigurimi ends up being my favorite. Keep up the great work! I love alien bear btw 💜🐻
Thank you! I'm on a mission to help people to realize that everyone starts at the beginning. We all have failures, it's nothing to be ashamed of! ❤️❤️❤️
I chose to crochet a ami doll, the pattern was easy to follow, but as i was moving along, the head seemed a little large, then her torso was really looking very strange. I kept rereading the instructions to see if i was not understanding correctly. Well. Lo and behold, after completing this giant doll, i found out the pattern was written using UK terminology!
Oh no!! That's a very good point!! Thanks for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
😂😂😂
My worst project was a double sided shells baby blanket in which I stopped halfway through and didn't keep the hook with the project so when I came back to it a year later I accidentally went up a size and didn't notice until after the border was dome that it had tapered outward slightly 😅 now I have multiple hooks so they never leave a project until its finished!
I've done that too!!!!! 😂😂😂
Great video Elise. I'm on my first blanket and working up to amigurumi. I've done a couple of cardis, one hexi, one granny square. I'm obsessed with this hobby and love finding out pitfalls to avoid!
Ooh! Sounds like you are making some beautiful projects! 🧶🧶🧶
I love the Alien Bear!
Thank you! 👽🧸
Great lessons learned and thank you for sharing!! My first amigarumi doll was HUGE!! The stuffing was visible and she was way under-stuffed, lol! I learned that using the right hook size and yarning under instead of yarning over, makes all the difference in how the finished project looks. I really love your Alien Bear...please give him some arms. He deserves some arms since he has to live with such a large head. 😄
Your daughter is gorgeous like her mom! Congratulations and best wishes to them!
Hope y'all have a wonderful Christmas! Happy yarning!

I feel your pain on taking notes! I started with what I thought would be a 6 mo hiatus from my shop. So all the notes on projects I did I thought no problem, I’ll remember. Well it’s now been 2 years and I’m ready to get back to it. Except…I now have like 8 projects that could be publishing if it weren’t for the fact I can’t understand my own notes. 🤦♀️🙄😂
Oh no!!!! So frustrating! 🧶🧶🧶
When I first learned about granny squares I was hesitant, thought it was too old fashioned and silly.. until I made one. Now my favorite thing is to make giant granny square blankets and giving them to people for no reason 😅... I no longer judge anything until I try it.
The fox looks perfect to me.
Awww! Thank you! 🦊
When I first started to learn crochet, my passion was doilies. I excitedly showed the lady that had originally taught me crochet basics my first completed doily. She said while it was done with no mistakes in the pattern, that I really needed to loosen up my tension as it was way too tight! Well, lesson learned! I think of what she said every time I crochet. “Loosen up!” My uptightness in my personality shows up in my crochet if I don’t keep it in check!! Thank you, Mary Ann F. !!
Thank you for sharing!! I'm a tight crocheter too!! 🧶🧶🧶
With the second one, the bag, the first thing I noticed was that the original one with the yellow yarn has a completely different stitch pattern used. Yours looks like it was just crocheted in the round, unless I'm being thrown off by the pattern of the yarn. The yellow one has those raised lines throughout it.
With the afghan, so wait, what colors did you use?? Inquiring minds need to know!
Ooo, that was a fox? Um . . . that pattern definitely needs the nose to be more of a 3D kinda thing, rather than just flat. But yeah, totally agree on the eyes being too low and too wide set.
Ouch . . . I feel you on the notes thing. My first handful of projects, I was like, "I don't need to write down what I'm doing, I'll remember, no problem!"
Yeah. That didn't work out so well.
Now, I've got a notebook where I write down what the body part is, what I'm doing with it, how many rows, what changes there are at what row, all in a way that makes perfect sense to me. (But that would confuse the heck out of anyone who reads patterns the traditional way.)
I'd say my biggest mistake was when I first began and I understood working in the round and increasing stitches, but not having a stitch marker. So learning to use the stitch marker with my second project made a huge difference. As did writing down what I was doing with dolls so I could recreate them multiple times.
Yes! I got the stitch pattern wrong on the basket and there was a video tutorial! 😂 I don't remember the colors I used for the granny square blanket but they were all wrong. There was a quick photo I shared during the video, but if you blinked you would probably have missed it! They just look like mud all together! ❤️
When I first started to crochet I made a pair of slippers for my friend and they were both different sizes because I used different tension for them😅. One of them was bigger than the other, but my friend was very understanding and she encouraged me saying I will get better at it😊. Thank you for sharing your mistakes with us! I love your videos, they are interesting and fun.
What a good friend! 🧶🧶🧶
I love Alien Bear to be honest! He's the cute way of weird.
Awww! Thank you! 👽🧸
Another really unsucessful project was a sweater for my sister. and Another for my self. I made the tension to tense and sew it together so that the arm bits barely could breath. It was a bit embaressingXD. But as you said. It really taught me to pay attention to the result and to put in consideration that when I make a garment I want it to be used. And in order to have it used it needs to be practical and comfortable to wear.
Very good lessons to learn! 🧶🧶🧶
I love the alien bear soooooo much it is so cute! :)
Aww! Thank you! 👽🐻
My very first crochet project was an all black amigurumi grim reaper. I made a granny square when I was a teen (about 30yrs ago) and haven’t done anything since. Grim was so frustrating but I learned a lot
1: black sucks to learn on but it taught me how to count stitches
1. Tension matters. I crochet TIGHT which was a good thing because I used a 4mm on a 2mm project. It worked! But had I had looser stitches, it would be full of holes!
3: double hook size worked up to about double doll size and not quite double yarn. Prepare for that.
I free styled a crescent scrappy shawl. Well, it is tear drop/crescent/triangle. Works pretty good worn upside down 😂😂
Glad it worked out after all! 🧶🧶🧶
I learned after Two afghans not to use different weight yarns in the same project. I didn’t mix them together, just threw in a random row of a different yarn. Ugh!
That's a great lesson to learn! ❤
Ooh boy are you hard on your makes! So many of these projects look fine, and that bear is just adorable!
Thank you so much! ❤️
I love the proportions you dislike in your amigurumi, like the larger heads, and I tend to make them have pear to spherical bodies and stumps for optional limbs. The bookfrog and the ones staring behind you are good examples too, where the face is most of the body
Worst project-slippers
I learned nothing, I read, reread, reread, reread and reread and I still can't figure out what I'm doing.
It could be the pattern! 🧶🧶🧶
Totally relatable
This was such a good and informative video!! I can relate to you with the “taking good notes”part when I tried to recreate a hat I free-handed my friend 😭
It's so frustrating!! I always convince myself I'll remember and then I don't, lol! 😂
My biggest mistake so far was a kitchen towel. It was hourglass shaped and ACRYLIC. And the color was ugly to boot.
A lesson in yarn selection as well as reading patterns. So many dropped stitches!
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I affectionately call my first project "Kickstand". I was using a tutorial from Skein Spider for a popcorn stitch mini bunny amigurumi. I messed up counting on the row with back legs and placed the popcorns wrong. He looks like he is marking his territory. I love him so much. He taught me to find humor in mistakes.
Awwww! Love that! Thank you for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
I would say that lots of my fails have to do with sewing amigurumi together. Usually the heads are super wonky and floppy.😅 On the upside, my kids always love them, tell me I did a great job, and say they don't care. If you don't already have some, you should make some videos on sewing amigurumi.
Thank you for the suggestion! 🧶🧶🧶
My biggest mistake was in my first yr of hooking. Project was a personal graphghan full size blanket i had designed. I learned the importance of dye lots with a heavy heart only 3x skeins in.
That stinks!! Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
My worst projects were two different blankets. The first one was literally my first project learning stitches....using whatever yarn I could get a hold of.... nothing matched but I was so proud that I made something I could use on my bed.
The second was a nine patch blanket that took 10 months to make because I thought I would try a smaller hook and playing with design. Again using whatever I could get ahold of. More matching but my mistake was adding in llama wool yarn with acrylic....it can't be washed for that reason. Also I knew nothing about making joining boarders consistent. I learned so much from those projects
Thank you for valuing your beginning as a learning experience- it’s much more encouraging than putting them down. 🤗
Mistakes are the best teachers I've ever had! I cherish them, even if they were hard to swallow at the time! 🧶🧶🧶
I think the bear looks great!
Thank you! 👽🧸
Alien Bear is so cute 😍
Thank you! 👽🧸
I made a pouf which was supposed to be ottoman size and made using blanket yarn. The whole finished project stretched SO much that it ended up being like a large bean bag- like item that young children could play on and lounge on it. I'm sure my guage was way off. It will take a long time to try blanket yarn again.
Oh goodness!! That must have been disappointing! 🧶🧶🧶
My 'projects' are at that stage when its just little swatch to get familiar with the stitch, but i like to share that at one of them i noticed its becoming more trapezoid instead of square, like .. dramatically.
It got me thinking where im loosing stitches, started to pay attention and now i pretty sure i now how to start/end rows correctly. And importance of actoally paying attention 😅
That's always great to discover those mistakes! 🧶❤️🐑📆
I tried to make my great-niece a Pom Pom hat. It turned out big enough for a moose to wear! I now use stitch markers for the first and LAST stitch! Problem solved.
That's great!! Thanks for sharing!! ❤️
Your beginner “fails” are so charming. You can just tell they’re made with love ❤
When I made my first stuffed animal (a little unicorn) I took the instructions literally and thought sewing together meant sewing with a sewing needle and sewing thread RIP. And I used black thread on a white toy. No idea what I was thinking.
Lol!! Those are the kind of lessons that teach us what not to do in the future! 🧶🧶🧶
I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one who tried to make acrylic washcloths!
Oh you're not the only one! 🧶🧶🧶
Love the video! I miss seeing Mr. Pickle. 💙
One of my worst mistakes is the first amigurumi present I ever gave...a gray cat modeled after one of ours that I gave to my husband. The eyes are way too big, and not in a cute oversized way, like a weird alien cat way. But the safety backs are on so she's stuck that way! Now I'm super careful with safety eye backs. 😂
Love it!!! Alien cat!! 👽🐱
I think my worst projects are now as I only started crocheting a few weeks ago but every project is teaching something. It might teach me something basic, but it is teaching me.
That's the best way to look at it! Each project is a learning experience! 🧶🧶
That bear is adorable. You could still add the arms or even give it to a child without arms. Not everyone is blessed with 2. But he's cute as is. 😍
Thank you! 👽🧸
Hi ELISE AND right now I am working on my cottage core mosaic blanket and granny squares blanket and butterfly mosaic blanket and I love your channel and your videos and if you keep making videos I will keep watching them and what is your favorite crochet project to work on right now and favorite types of yarn to used when crocheting and keep up the great work on your TH-cam channel and keep up the great work on your crochet projects
Thank you! Your blanket sounds amazing!! I love making amigurumi! 🧶🧶🧶
I made a pug for my kiddo. He was a bit derpy. My kid loves it and I had 3 people order them from me. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Awww! How sweet! 🧶🧶🧶
My biggest fails after "learning" how to properly crochet... It would have to be making an acrylic short sleeved sweater for the Summer... Oh...The sticky, humid days in South Carolina in that sweater... I may have only made it through 4 days wearing it. But my worst knitting was "Derpy the Dear"... I didn't pre-read the pattern, I missed HUGE things... I wish I could find him, he got lost some where in moving the last 6 times... He was something out of a Tim Burton meets Wes Craven nightmare...
Lol!! Now I want to see Derpy! I love both Tim Burton and Wes Craven! 🧶🧶🧶
Top of the morning to you! Love your sweet bunny! 🥰
Thank you! 😊
I was actually just telling a coworker yesterday that my first lapghan was a hot mess, it was like the sides had this wavy pattern but not in a pretty way. It taught me the importance of tension and where to put my first and last stitch of each row
I made a blanket like that once too!! I forgot to include it!! 🤣🤣🤣
Love this video! Every project is a learning opportunity 🧶
Yes they are! 🧶🧶🧶
I've been crocheting since I was in my 20s. I couldn't tell you all the mistakes I've made. But to those who were gifted the items I made with mistakes were so clueless. They had no idea there was a stitch that was not quite right. But I am thankful that you mentioned going down a hook size if the filler is showing.
Thanks for sharing! ❤
I made my first amigurumi kitty and I struggled with the pattern and messed up on his bottom lol but he's cute and I love taking it where ever I go. I know I made tons is mistakes so I will take it again and since I do see the stuffing a bit, I will use a smaller hook.
I had a recent project I was working on and wanted to make a cat beanie using blanket yarn and when I was done...I hated it and it was way to big for my head. I tried to save the yarn and unravel it but because it was black yarn and fluffy, I could even see the stitches. I just got fed up and put it in a box my cats like to sleep in. They love the softness...so it found a purpose. Lol
Awww! Sounds like the perfect little kitty bed! 🐱
